From the Pastor

A Change in Pastoral Work for

Fr. Rich Rosin, SDB

We have been blessed over the past

number of years with the priestly presence and

witness of Fr. Rosin, a Salesian of Don Bosco.

Fr. Rosin has been assisting here at St. John’s with

weekend Mass coverage along with other priestly

assistance during his time on faculty and in

leadership positions at St. Petersburg Catholic

High School (SPCHS). Unfortunately, the

Salesian community will be leaving the SPCHS

community at the close of this school year.

The high school administration will be returned

to the diocese as new leadership will be brought

on. This situation impacts us here at St. John’s

because it means Fr. Rosin will be reassigned by

his community and will no longer be assisting

here at the parish. Fr. Rosin will continue to offer

his priestly assistance here until early June.

We wish Fr. Rosin all the best during this time

of transition and we are grateful for his years of

dedicated service to our parish community and

to the high school community of SPCHS.

Welcome Fr. Jose “Joy” Colina!

Bishop Gregory Parkes has appointed Fr. Jose

“Joy” Colina as Parochial Vicar for our parish

effective July 1, 2017. Fr. Colina

is from the Philippines and was

ordained in 1989. He is an

incardinated priest of our

diocese and has been serving

in various parish assignments

over the past 14 years. His pastoral ministry

includes assignments at St. Paul—Tampa,

Our Lady of Lourdes—Dunedin, St. Anthony—

Brooksville, and most recently at Corpus

Christi—Tampa. We welcome Fr. Colina to St. John’s and we look

forward to his arrival in July.

Conditions for Obtaining a Plenary Indulgence

The last couple of weekends, we have been

advertising a special rosary event to celebrate the

Centennial Anniversary of the Apparitions of

Fatima. On the 13th of each month from May

through October, we will offer rosary services at

our Fatima grotto with the opportunity to obtain

a plenary indulgence as granted by our Holy

Father, Pope Francis. See pages 6 & 7 for a good

summary of what a plenary indulgence is and

how one goes about obtaining it.

100th Anniversary Year of Our Lady of Fatima

November 27, 2016–November 26, 2017

Here at St. John’s, we are blessed to have a

beautiful outdoor grotto of Our Lady of Fatima.

I am pleased to announce that Bishop Parkes

has granted permission for us to make use of

our grotto as a public place for veneration for

the centennial anniversary of the apparitions

of Our Lady in Fatima, with the opportunity to

obtain a plenary indulgence as part of the second

way: to visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady

of Fatima exposed for public veneration as part

of some celebration during the days of the

apparitions, the 13th of each month from May

to October 2017. With all this in mind, on the 13th of each month,

from May through October, there will be two

public gatherings to pray the rosary: one will be

during the day (times will be announced) and

one will be after sunset (the sunset rosary will

be a candlelight service). Please mark your

calendars and plan to be a part of this special

grace-filled centennial anniversary of the appari-

tions of Our Lady in Fatima. Our first gathering

at the Fatima grotto will be Saturday, May 13th

at 10 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Please note, the parking

lot in front of the grotto will be roped off and not

available to park your car. Please plan to use the

other parking lots around the church for these

events. Thank you.

th Anniversary Year of

Our Lady of Fatima Archdiocese of Philadelphia Indulgence Opportunities

During the Centennial Anniversary of the

Apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence

opportunity for the 100th anniversary of the Fatima

apparitions throughout the centennial year, from

the 27th of November 2016 till the 26th of November

2017. There are three ways to obtain the indulgence,

detailed in a statement from the Fatima Shrine in

Portugal (see below). To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must

also fulfill the ordinary conditions: go to Confession

and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin,

and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. Make a pilgrimage to the Shrine in Fatima,

Portugal—To the faithful who make a pilgrimage

to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal and participate in

a celebration of prayer dedicated to the Virgin.

In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father,

recite the Creed and invoke the Mother of God. Pray before any statue of Our Lady of Fatima—

To the faithful who visit with devotion a statue of

Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public

veneration in any church, oratory or proper place

during the days of the anniversary of the appari-

tions, the 13th of each month from May to October

2017, and there devoutly participate in some

celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary.

In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father,

recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima. The elderly and infirm—To the faithful who,

because of age, illness or other serious cause, are

unable to get around, may pray in front of a statue

of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite

themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days

of the apparitions, the 13th of each month, between

May and October 2017. They must also “offer to

merciful God with confidence, through Mary, their

prayers and sufferings or the sacrifices they make in

their own lives.”1

Learn More About the Church’s Practice of

Granting Indulgences What is an indulgence? An indulgence is a

remission before God of the temporal punishment

due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven.2

There are specific conditions for receiving an

indulgence. As a result of the communion that exists between

Christ and all the members of the Church, the

Church has a treasury of spiritual goods that is

inexhaustible. The source of these spiritual goods is

Christ. Through her union with Christ, the Church

has the authority to dispense this treasury. When

the Church does this, in order to spur people to acts

of piety and charity, the Church requires those who

seek an indulgence to perform some good work or

act of devotion. An indulgence does not confer grace. An indulgence

is not a remission of the guilt due to sin. The guilt

due to sin is ordinarily taken away by the Sacraments

of Baptism and Penance (confession), in which we

receive forgiveness for sins through Jesus Christ.

Although guilt is taken away, and with it the eternal

penalty that is due to sin, namely, damnation, the

eternal loss of the presence of God, there remain

consequences for sins that those who have committed

them must bear. There is what is traditionally called

the temporal punishment for sin. Every sinful act creates a disorder within the soul

of the human person; it distorts our desires and

affections, leaving us with “an unhealthy attachment

to creatures, which must be purified either here on

earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory.”

Furthermore, sin disrupts one’s relationships with

God, with the Church, with other people, and with

the world as a whole. The communion intended by

God is damaged or lost. Those who have received

forgiveness for their sins through the sacraments

still have an obligation to undergo a difficult and

painful process (the temporal penalty for sin) to be

purified of the consequences of their sins and to

Page 7: St. John Vianney · St. John Vianney Catholic Church 500 84th Ave. ... Josh Glen Aguilar 3rd Place: Jake Friske ... Linda Walker, Josh Ward, Pat

April 23, 2017 St. John Vianney Parish Page Seven

restore the disrupted relationships. The necessary

and painful process that brings restoration and

purification can take place either in this life or in

Purgatory, as whatever part of the process remains

unfinished at death must be completed in Purgatory. Through an indulgence , God grants the prayer

of the Church that the temporal penalty for sin

due to someone be reduced [partial indulgence],

or possibly eliminated [plenary indulgence].

By God’s grace, participation in a prayer or action

that has an indulgence attached to it brings about

the necessary restoration and reparation without

the suffering that would normally accompany it.

The granting of an indulgence by the Church is

“the expression of the Church’s full confidence of

being heard by the Father when, in view of Christ's

merits and, by his gift, those of Our Lady and the

saints, she asks him to mitigate or cancel the painful

aspect of punishment by fostering its medicinal

aspect through other channels of grace.”3 What is the difference between a partial and

plenary indulgence? An indulgence is partial

or plenary according to whether it removes either

part [partial] or all [plenary] of the temporal

punishment due to sin.4 2 Manual of Indulgences N1 3 From USCCB website: http://www.usccb.org/

prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/

prayers/popular-devotional-practices-basic-

questions-and-answers.cfm 4 Manual of Indulgences N2

What are the conditions for obtaining

an indulgence? In order to be capable of gaining

indulgences one must be baptized, not excommuni-

cated, and in the state of grace at least at the

completion of the prescribed works. To gain an

indulgence, one must have at least the general

intention of doing so.5 Plenary Indulgence: Furthermore, for reception of a

Plenary Indulgence, which grants the remission of

all temporal punishment due to sin, in addition to

this good work or act of devotion, the Church

specifies four conditions: (1) sacramental confession,

(2) reception of Holy Communion, (3) prayer for the

intentions of the Holy Father, and (4) complete

detachment from all sin, even venial sin.6 Partial Indulgences: If the full disposition is lacking, or

if the work and the four prescribed conditions are

not fulfilled, [save certain specified exceptions], the

indulgence will only be partial.7 Note on Partial Indulgences: In the past, partial

indulgences were “counted” in days (e.g., 300 days)

or years (e.g., 5 years). Catholics often mistakenly

thought that this meant “time off of purgatory.”

Since there is no time in purgatory, as we under-

stand it, it meant instead the remission of temporal

punishment analogous to a certain amount of

penitence as practiced in the early Church. This was

a very generous standard, since the penitence

required for sacramental absolution in the early cen-

turies was arduous, indeed. However, with Pope

Paul VI’s 1968 revision of the Enchiridion

Indulgentiarum (Collection or Handbook of

Indulgences), this confusing way of counting

partial indulgences was suppressed, and the

evaluation of a partial indulgence left to God.8 Can a baptized person obtain an indulgence for

someone else? The faithful can obtain Partial or

Plenary indulgences for themselves, or they can

apply them to the dead.9 5 Manual of Indulgences N17 6 From USCCB website: http://www.usccb.org/

The First Saturday Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary The observance of the first

Saturday in honor of the

Immaculate Heart of Mary is

intended to make reparation

to it for the sins of mankind.

This devotion was revealed

by the Blessed Virgin to three

children, Francisco, Jacinta

and Lucia to whom she

appeared at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.

On June 13, 1917, Our Lady specifically stated

in speaking to Lucia: Jesus wants to make use of

you to make me known and loved. He wants to estab-

lish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. Our Lady repeated this in the July 13th apparition

when, after the vision of Hell that was granted to

the three children, she said: You have seen Hell,

where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them,

God wishes to establish in the world, devotion to my

Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many

souls will be saved and there will be peace. Our Lady

asks for reparation. There are so many souls

whom the Justice of God condemns for sins committed

against me, that I have come to ask reparation;

reparation to this Heart for the sins of mankind,

in particular the five kinds of offenses and

blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of

Mary, namely: 1. Blasphemies against the Immaculate

Conception

2. Blasphemies against her perpetual virginity

3. Blasphemies against the divine and spiritual

maternity of Mary

4. Blasphemies involving the rejection and

dishonoring of her images

5. The neglect of implanting in the hearts of

children a knowledge and love of this

Immaculate Mother O’ my Jesus, I offer this love of Thee, for the conver-

sion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins

committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The following First Saturday devotions are effica-

cious in honoring the Immaculate Heart of Mary: 1. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

2. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

3. Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart

of Mary

4. Act of Reparation

5. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary

6. The Sacrament of Reconciliation I promise to help at the hour of death, with the graces

needed for salvation, whoever on the First Saturday of

five consecutive months shall: 1. Confess and receive Holy Communion

2. Recite five decades of the Holy Rosary

3. Keep me company for fifteen minutes while

meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary,

with the intention of making reparation to me. St. John Vianney Parish observes this devotion on

the first Saturday of every month following the

8:15 a.m. Mass. All are welcome to participate.
