“If the God in your heart is not one of love then it is the wrong
God”
Father Paul Murphy
(SJV 15th & 16th June 2019)
Dear Parents and Friends
Last month Pope Francis went to Bulgaria to give 245 children First Communion and even as Pope, Francis considers himself a parish priest – “the world’s parish priest” as he once told a friend. Father Paul Murphy certainly fulfilled the role in Father Frank’s absence and ensured our children had a memorable First Holy Communion. The children in our school and parish will never forget this weekend, their first encounter with Jesus in
the sacrament of the Eucharist.
“One of you might ask me: How can we meet Jesus? He lived a long time ago, but then he died and was laid in the tomb! It is true: Jesus carried out an immense act of love to save human beings of all times. He remained in
the tomb for three days, but we know – the Apostles and many other witnesses who saw him alive have assured us—that God, his Father and
ours, raised him up. Now Jesus is alive and is here with us. That is why we can encounter him today in the Eucharist. We do not see him with our
physical eyes, but we do see him with the eyes of faith.”
Pope Francis 6 May 2019
Father Paul spoke about welcome and as a people of the Church we need to be people of welcome, just like Nano. It is not up to us to make up rules and regulations when Jesus never made up rules about who could sit at his table. This had a strong message about how we can proactively ensure that we include others at school, church, in our homes and in the wider
community.
My sincere thanks to Mrs Olivia Horn, Mrs Paula McConnon and Miss Katelyn Carroll for their involvement in the Sacramental Program by facilitating groups and supporting Paola Gallacher in her new role as Sacramental Coordinator. I thank Monette Emery, Agnes
Excell and Erica Qureshi for facilitating groups.
In God We Trust.

Winter Appeal
We have one week left to collect donations for the Redland Bayside Deanery Annual Winter Appeal. Thank you again to the families who have already sent in donations. Catholic communities strive to continue to reach out to others just as Jesus did. Scripture tells us “Give your food to the
hungry and care for the homeless. Then your light will shine in the dark; your darkest hour will be like the noonday sun” Isa iah 58:10
Just as Jesus, Nano Nagle and St John Vianney served others, our community can also be of service to others by generously donating items to
this appeal. Please see below a list of items for each year level. The appeal will finish next Wednesday 26 June.
Prep – Drinks eg. cordial, milo, coffee, tea, juice, long-life milk
Year 1 – Soups and Pasta eg. cup-a-soup, cup-a-noodles, pasta, pasta meals, pasta sauce, rice, rice meals
Year 2 – Biscuits and Bars eg crackers, biscuits, muesli bars
Year 3 – Cereal eg weetbix, cornflakes, other healthy cereals
Year 4 – Canned food all ring pull eg tinned meals, soup, vegetables, fruit, spaghetti, baked beans
Year 5 & 6 – Toiletries and kitchen items eg roll on deodorant (no glass), shaving cream, shampoo/conditioner, dishwashing liquid, plastic spoons,
serviettes (packs of 100), sugar.
The Catholic Identity Student Leaders have done a wonderful job collecting these donations from the classrooms each week and packing them into
boxes.
Sacrament of Confirmation
There will be a parent information evening for students (Year 3 or older) who are wanting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This information evening will be held on Tuesday 16 July at 6:30pm in Nano Nagle Hall (first week after the June/July holidays). Attendance is compulsory for enrolments to be accepted. Unfortunately enrolments accepted after this date cannot be accepted. Parents will need to bring a copy of their child’s baptismal certificate and $40 cash with the completed enrolment form.

Congratulations

beautiful celebrations. Congratulations to all of these candidates.
May peace be with you.

Last Thursday was the Readers Cup Competition for the Bayside area, where 23 local schools competed in a reading competition. Students were required to read 5 set books and then race against the clock to answer questions on each book. It was an exciting atmosphere and a very closely contended competition. Held at Moreton Bay College, with guest author Samantha Wheeler, who entertained students with snippets of her writing throughout the evening, a special treat was had by all. Although not the winners, our team did SJV proud and enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to our team pictured below with author Samantha
Wheeler.
Next term we celebrate Book Week, with this year’s theme Reading is My Secret Power. This year we begin with the performance Dream Big on Thursday 15 August followed by the Book Parade and
Rug Reading on Monday 19 August. Mark the dates, it’s never too early to start planning your costume.
Overdue letters have gone home this week. Please assist your child to return all their library books so they can borrow
for the holidays.
Book Club went home last week. Thank you for your support. In Term 3 there will be one Book Club and our annual
Book Fair to coincide with Book Week.
Congratulations to Best Friends of the library this week 4V and PV. Happy reading!

Extra Practices for the musical
We will be introducing before school practices for different scenes of the musical which will run in the music room from 8:00am - 8:30am on
Thursdays and Fridays. We will let students know ahead of time who is required! We appreciate parents assisting to get students to these
rehearsals if possible and also reading lines at home so that students are very familiar with their parts! Practice, practice, practice…….
Main Cast Holiday Rehearsal
Our holiday rehearsal is edging closer:
Venue: SJV Hall
Attendees: Year 5 and 6 students
Date: Thursday 11 July
Time: 9am-2pm
What to wear: casual clothes [not costumes]
What to bring: water bottle, snacks; lunch provided by SJV [pizza and popper juices]
Students are reminded that their script lines must be memorised and rehearsed by the holiday rehearsal. It is a huge commitment from everyone
but that’s ‘show biz’!
Costumes
Information about costumes have been emailed out to parents today. Students will be asked to bring these to school by 28 August in a labelled
bag.
Costume and prop items alert
We would love to borrow some items for our school musical if SJV families have them at their disposal:
A couple of barrels or resin look-a-likes that are not too heavy
A timber wheel barrow [that is in good condition] and child’s spade
Someone to construct 2 ship masts [perhaps out of white plumbing tubes or curtain rods] to attach to a trolley dolley
Someone who has white lightweight fabric/curtain lace to use for the sails on the 2 ships
We need lots of rope netting for the ships and to use as props
A very large artificial palm tree in a pot
If you can help with any of these items, it is greatly appreciated. Please contact the lovely office ladies and let them know what we can borrow!!
“Ship ahoy!” and “Hoist the main sail!” SJV.
