| 27TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME | OCTOBER 3, 20212

Dear friends,

Thank you for your prayers for Fr. Alex. His surgery went well, and he is back at the parish. Thanks, too, for your prayers for me upon my investiture as a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. The ceremony in the Cathedral of St. Peter in Cincinnati was very

solemn. For me, it was a taste of heaven. At least 70 priests, lay men and women were dubbed as knights or ladies of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The Order was established during the

First Crusade to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land. Modern day knights and ladies financially and spiritually support the Christians in Palestine. We support Bethlehem University, several hospitals, support pilgrimages, and the Franciscans in the Holy Land.

October is Respect Life Month and Rosary Month. This first Sunday of October is Respect Life Sunday, and the readings speak of the beauty of marriage, family and children. Let’s never forget the preciousness of human life.

October 7th is the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. The rosary is a wonderful way to mediate on the mysteries of Jesus and Mary found in the gospels and Church tradition. The rosary is dear to many and is gaining popularity, especially among young people. We should be grateful for this beautiful treasure given to us by Mary in various apparitions, and confirmed and recommended by many popes past and present.

Blessed October,

Very Rev Edwin Kornath, KHS (Knight of the Holy Sepulchre)

ROSARY CAMPAIGN FOR AMERICA EWTN, Relevant Radio, and Napa Institute Announce Joint Rosary for Life Michael Warsaw, CEO of EWTN, Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, CEO of Relevant Radio, and Tim Busch, CEO of Napa Institute, have announced a joint effort to pray and promote the daily rosary during the month of October for “the end to legal abortion in America and an outpouring of support for expectant mothers.” With the Supreme Court of the United States taking up the Dobbs case in December that could lead to overturning Roe v. Wade, the Justices will need the grace of wisdom and courage to confront the issues honestly. Warsaw, Hoffman and Busch hope many other Catholic organizations will join this effort by praying and promoting the daily Rosary in October for this intention and thus mobilize millions of Americans in prayer. For more information, go to EWTN.com, RelevantRadio.com, and Napa-Institute.org.

During the month of October St John Vianney will be praying the Rosary and we ask you to come and pray with us. · Monday mornings following the 7 AM Mass in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel · Wednesdays at 6:30 AM in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel · Thursdays at 5 PM in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY On the weekend of August 28/29, as part of the 2021 Missionary Cooperation Plan program, a collection was taken up at each Mass to support the missions of the Sisters of the Divine Savior, also known as the Salvatorian Sisters. The Sisters of the Divine Savior is composed of 950 nuns on five continents in 26 countries. In impoverished lands, the Salvatorian Sisters strive to empower the local people to develop their own resources. They depend on the generosity of people like us to support their ministries. The collection was very successful, netting $6,771.00. Thank you!

The 4:30 PM Saturday Vigil Mass is livestreamed. (Go to www.stjohnv.org, then click Watch Virtual Mass to get to our You Tube page.)

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER! Did you know that the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7, 2021? Wouldn’t it be powerful and appropriate if a group of us joined the Worship Committee to say the Rosary once each week in October? Bring your Rosary and honor Our Lady in prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel on Thursday, October 7, at 5 PM and again on each remaining Thursday in October (October 7, 14, 21 and 28). Life is busy with work, school, sports and more, and families are constantly on the go! Please consider taking 30 minutes once each week to join us in praying the Rosary to the best Mother in the world! See you then.

WHAT’S THIS? The Nicene Creed - Part 6 of 6 – The Church

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Church of Jesus Christ is His Mystical Body. Therefore, the Church is holy, even if the human beings who compromise it are not always holy. The Church is one because Christ is one. The Church is catholic because the Church is “universal.” Catholic means universal. And the Church is apostolic because Christ founded it upon the Apostles.

We enter into this Church through the one Baptism of Christ, by which we are cleansed of original sin, are grafted onto Christ, and become adopted sons and daughters of God.

We believe that when Christ comes again, we will be reunited with our bodies in a glorified way, similar to Christ’s resurrected Body. We do not know exactly what this will look like.

And we look forward to the life of the world to come which is eternal blessedness in the company of the angels and the saints in constant praise and love of God. We will want for nothing and all suffering will be no more.

SILENT PRAYER/MEDITATION IN THE PRESENCE OF THE DIVINE Our adoration chapel is a beautiful place to visit and to pray in. On Fridays from 7:30 AM until 4:00 PM, we hold a time of adoration with the Holy Sacrament exposed which is a special time of grace. We need people to keep vigil so that this adoration time can continue, and there are time slots available for those who would like to commit to a regular time and, if not individually, you can connect with friends and partner up to cover a weekly time, trading off. There is also a need to increase our list of subs. If this ministry speaks to your heart, please let Lisa Rehlinger know at 262-796-3946, ext. 1114, or at [email protected].

Today’s readings are timely in our society. To some they may seem “controversial,” but we must view them in the context of which they are presented. Yes, they are about marriage, traditional marriage, but they are even more about the idea of family.

Family can be defined and regarded from a number of different notions. Yet, no matter how we may look at it or experience it, Jesus assures us that the family is the building block on which our lives should be formed. Think of the families to which we may belong. They range from the family into which we are born to our faith family here. Our goal as a parish is to be a family. Christ holds our family together.

Our First Reading comes from the very beginning of the Bible, from creation itself, as reported in the Book of Genesis. It has to do with the creation by God of the first man and the first woman, Adam and Eve. There is an ancient Jewish proverb that reads, “God made woman, not out of the man’s foot to be under him, nor out of his head to be over him, but she was taken from under his arm that he might protect her, and from next to his heart that he might love her.” This is the important meaning of this reading. Adam and Eve are described as “partners.” We are all partners. That is what makes us a family and a community.

This idea of family is extended in the Second Reading from the Epistle to the Hebrews. Our reading today opens with “Brothers and Sisters.” That is a clear statement that we are a family of faith, and that in loving one another as we should we need to see one another as members of a family. This reading speaks to Jesus’ suffering and sacrifice in our behalf. The implication here is that for us to truly be a family, regardless how we may define it, it involves sacrifice. That, too, parallels the idea of stewardship. To be a steward, to be a disciple means that we are willing to serve one another in love. That may mean that sacrifices are necessary for us to accomplish that. He (Jesus) who consecrates and those who are being consecrated (us) all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call us “brothers and sisters.”

The love shared by a family needs to be shared with all those around us. That is what Jesus expects of us, and that is what living as a steward is all about—love.
