PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Dear St. Jerome Parish, The calendar turns to November and we are reminded to be grateful for the many ways in which God is working in our lives. On Friday, November 22, from 5:30-7:30pm, we’ll host our St. Jerome Harvest Meal. Parishioners are heartily invited to join us. Just please bring a food you like to eat, maybe from your cultural heritage, 10-12 servings. SJS will provide drinks, plates and silverware. Last year this evening was wonderful and truly my favor-ite SJS event! In November, our school focuses on the virtue of COUR-TESY: being thoughtful to others. We use materials pro-vided by the Dominican Sisters of Nashville. With each virtue different saints are highlighted. This month we’ll be learning more about St. Martin de Porres (in K-2), Ven. Solanus Casey (in 3-5) and Ven. Pierre Toussaint (in 6-8). I am thrilled to report that we raised $12,500 for Rake-a-Thon and we had 100% family participation. It was a very successful effort. Thank you for supporting our stu-dents and our school. Gratefully, Anne Gattman Principal

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Every time a parish chooses a new set of pastoral council members it is a time to celebrate and give thanks. We have chosen four new members to the pastoral council as four current members will complete

their tenure. Times like this affirms us of the talents of our membership that is being put into service for the faith community. It raises new hope and anticipation of what is to come. Let us give thanks to the out going members of the pastoral council. For three years they shared their gifts and charism so that as a church we live out our mis-sion. We look forward to a new set of leaders and pray for guidance and inspiration so that they may serve in the heart and mind of God. The readings this Sunday affirms us of who we are before God: loved and treasured, forgiven and restored. Let us approach the altar believing of a God who supports us in our desire for wholeness and holiness. The magic and the love in the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus tells it all. Let us be inspired by the story and listen to the prayer of St. Paul who said “our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith..” Indeed “Loving and forgiving are you O Lord, slow to anger, rich in kindness, loving and forgiving are you. Fr. Vic

Archbishop Hebda is particularly excited to have this opportunity to pray with us for discernment about the future of our local church. He wants to hear how the Holy Spirit is speaking through us to help him set pastoral priorities for our Archdioceses. I attended the event at Guardian Angels Parish. The event was a fast three hours. As the people entered each of us was given the choice of how to submit answers to the guided discussions questions that would be used. One option was to hand write responses on printed sheets. The other option was to use your cell phone to connect to a web site to respond to the same questions. The first half of the event was opening remarks by Archbishop Hebda and three segments of scripture and prayer. These were lead by Bishop Cozzens. This prayer and scripture opened the way for the Holy Spirit to be at work in the mind and soul of each of us. In the second half there was the table discussion and feedback. There were clear instructions to control and guide the conversation. The kneejerk reaction to open discussion is usual-ly negative. Don’t let that attitude keep you from these events. For me it was interesting and sobering to hear the heart of other parishioners. At the finish of the table discussions Archbishop Hebda listened to feedback from a representative from each table. He sincerely listened to each person with patience and love. The event closed with a blessing and song. I highly en-courage each of you to make great effort to attend a prayer and listening event. By our baptism we have the right and responsi-bility to participate.
