The people of St. Jerome Church are a Catholic parish community united in the love and grace of Jesus

St. Jerome’s Catholic Church Maplewood, MN

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is getting close to six months since we started this journey in adjusting our way of worship due to the Covid-19 virus infec-tion. We are still having a hard time embracing a different nor-mal and is concerned about how this “new normal” will affect

our outlook on public worship and the strength of our (already challenging) church community.

How challenging indeed are the exigencies of our present time. What we believe and the values that we dearly hold are being tested by time. Much as many things have evolved yet the essence of faith is affirmed and strength-ened. When church gatherings are limited we have re-discovered the value of church and the desire to worship God as a community. When receiving communion has changed we have reassessed what we believe about the Eucharist and our need for God. With social distancing, use of facemask and limited public gatherings, we come to realize the value of community and relationships. We have found new ways around the pandemic yet nothing is the same as person to person interaction. When our ene-my is invisible we seek the invisible God who is our sure security and protector.

Today we remind ourselves of what constitute our being church and our mission. We are a church of Christ and our mission is to proclaim his word. As a church we are tested day in and day out: our faith and our belief. This is a time we affirm that as baptized Christian we have to be persons with a firm commitment and courage to perse-vere to proclaim and live out the teachings of our church and give witness to it. This is our chance to assert our faith in how we respond during pandemic. We must firm-ly stand for what God teaches us about truth, justice, rac-ism and human rights.

To be a Christian in our world today is to be someone who is not afraid to work for peace and justice, and to speak the truth. To be a member of our Catholic commu-nity is to embrace the true meaning of being Catholic - universal – helping the poor, protect the homeless, wel-coming the stranger and sharing our gifts to the less for-tunate.

Me must love as Jesus loved. We must forgive as Jesus forgave. We must give as Jesus gave his life for the ran-som of our sins. Fr. Victor Valencia

SINGING AT MASS DURING A PANDEMIC

Mary Beth Hess, Music Director

One of the important roles of our music ministers is to “lead the congregation to prayer in song.” Their ministry is NOT to perform. They invite the congregation in the pews to pray and sing together during Mass. In essence our music together is an expression of our communal wor-ship. With CoVid 19, our music ministers are challenged to adjust to a “new normal”, to enhance our liturgies with music that will lead us to prayer and reflection. With our current condition, we are limited to a cantor to sing solo selections for the congregation to pray with. The selec-tions are always associated with the readings of the day. Many of the song selections may not be familiar but are reflective and will dispose our hearts to prayer. As a faith community, it is very inviting to sing with our music ministers. However, we are encouraged NOT to sing during Mass at this time. The CDC has noted that singers emit droplets into the air when they sing. They are considered “super emitters” and can project the corona virus as much as 6-20 feet into the air, even when masked. Our Masses are celebrated indoors, which adds to the con-cern, as exposure for more than 30 minutes indoors can be a health concern during this pandemic. It is hard to imagine not singing during Mass. That is so much a part of our tradition and who we are. Yet we can make use of music to place ourselves into a disposition to pray. We look forward to that day when we can prepare and share song sheets and hymnals and get everyone to sing once again.
