He sees it in his patients all the time: “Women lead busy lives. they often have a family and a job, strive to make sure everyone is taken care of and stop paying attention to their own health,” said Jude Verzosa, MD, an internal
medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic in Enumclaw and chief of medical staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
that can be a big mistake — for yourself, and your family. “I make sure my patients know how important it is to keep appointments for their own preventive screenings. When they do, they keep their family healthier as well,” said Dr. Verzosa.
Depending on age and family history, your physician will likely recommend different preventive screenings. Being open and honest about your family history and past medical history helps your physician create an individualized care plan.
Your physician can also help with stress reduction. “If a patient is not sleeping well or experiences mood swings, we
may screen for depression,” Dr. Verzosa explained. “We can provide focused treatment and lifestyle modifications
to help reduce stress in healthier ways and prevent diseases later in life.”
Care plans should evolve with your life. “Children are born, go to school, leave home.
these are big events. through it all, it’s important to keep a list of your own
health concerns — not just your husband’s or children’s — and bring
it to your next appointment. We will help keep you at your best,”
said Dr. Verzosa.

Take time for youYour health depends on it
After June 1, Ed Lopez, PA-C, will have a slightly different routine when seeing
patients at St. Joseph Medical Center. Mr. Lopez, an inpatient team medical
provider, will now be recording patient health information into a computer in
the patient’s room, not on a paper chart. It’s a seemingly small change that
offers dramatic benefits to both doctors and patients.
St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, St. Clare Hospital and St.
Anthony Hospital will all launch a new electronic health record system the first
week of June. St. Elizabeth, which is already on an electronic health record system,
will adopt the same system as the rest of the facilities in 2014. Franciscan Medical
Clinics will transition to one electronic health record by the end of the year.
The key to the new electronic health records is that each patient will have
only one record or chart — no matter what doctor they see in the system. “The
benefit of having just one record is that, over time, the medical history and the
information in that patient record becomes much more complete and accurate

Milgard Family Foundation has awarded a $2.75 million grant for the Carol Milgard Breast Center to provide tomosynthesis (also known as 3D mammography) to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. the technology will be installed later this year, making the center the first in pierce County to offer this technology. the Carol Milgard Breast Center located in tacoma is a partnership between Franciscan Health System and another local health organization serving the greater tacoma area and surrounding communities. Franciscan will also install the 3D system at its mammography centers in Federal Way, Enumclaw and gig Harbor in the next two years.

resulting in a more consistent and less frag-
mented source of patient information and
treatment which then becomes available to
all physicians whether in or out of the hospital,”
Mr. Lopez explained.
“Good information is essential for good
health care. A patient’s medical history is
unique to that individual and tells us a great
deal,” Mr. Lopez added. “Too often we have to
rely exclusively on the memories of patients or
family members for important medical informa-
tion. With this new system, if the patient has
been seen within the Franciscan network of
hospitals and clinics in the past, we’ll be able to
call up their health record immediately resulting
in accurate information.”
Patients also will have quick access to their
health information by signing up for the
system’s secure, online Franciscan MyChart tool.
Using MyChart, patients will be able to view
their medical records, request appointments or
prescription refills from their primary care
doctor — even email their doctor. MyChart also
will provide reminders of screening tests and
other health information to help patients get
not only the best in health care, but also the
best in illness prevention.

LOCAL DOCTORS, HOSPITALS PARTNER TO COORDINATE CARE FOR MEDICARE FEE-FOR-SERVICE BENEFICIARIES
Franciscan Health System has joined with
Northwest Physician Network, an associa-
tion of local independent community
physicians, to form an Accountable Care
Organization (ACO) to ensure Medicare
Fee-For-Service beneficiaries in the South
Sound have access to high-quality, coordi-
nated care. Called Franciscan Northwest
Physicians Health Network, it is the first ACO
in the South Puget Sound area and the
second in the state. Since the passage of the
Affordable Care Act, more than 250 ACOs
have been established nationally.
All ACOs must meet quality standards to
ensure savings related to Medicare
Fee-For-Service beneficiaries through
improving care coordination and providing
care that is appropriate, safe and timely.
Franciscan Northwest Physicians Health
Network’s goal is to provide better coordi-
nated care across physician offices and
hospitals, better health outcomes and fewer
hospital visits for our Medicare Fee-For-
Service beneficiaries. Beneficiaries using
ACOs always have the freedom to choose
doctors inside or outside of the ACO.

the Franciscan Medical pavilion, located in Bonney lake at Highway 410 and 184th Street, is scheduled to open its doors in June. It will bring the exceptional care Franciscan Health System is known for to Bonney lake, lake tapps and surrounding communities.
From the ground up, we combined new design and technology to take health care to the next level. We worked with patients, physicians and employees to create a warm, inviting, healing environment for our patients. We also focused on ways to help reduce wait times, minimize stress and provide convenient access to a wide array of high quality health care services in one convenient location.
Many services will be offered including primary care, pharmacy, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging (including mammography), gastroenterology, lab and outpatient infusion services. a number of specialist physicians, such as orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, neurologists and cardiologists, will practice at the new center to bring expert diagnosis and treatment closer to home. the pavilion will also feature a Franciscan prompt Care to provide urgent medical care for life’s minor illnesses and injuries.
CENTER OF ExCELLENCE IN MINIMALLY INVASIVE GYNECOLOGY
St. Francis Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center, and eight affiliated
physicians were named Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive
Gynecology™ (COEMIG™) designees by the AAGL and Surgical
Review Corporation.
The COEMIG program distinguishes surgeons and facilities that
demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe,
effective, evidence-based and coordinated care.
“Women’s services have grown more advanced and specialized over the past 10 to
15 years. ‘Minimally invasive surgery’ isn’t just a catch phrase, it is a proven surgical
option for women that will provide the lowest risk of complications along with the
fast recovery times. This award demonstrates both the physician’s and hospitals’
commitment to providing safe, high-quality care. We are truly raising the bar for the
overall patient experience,” said Cindy Mosbrucker, MD, medical director for the
COEMIG program.

you have lists for work, groceries and errands. But when do you ever put yourself at the top of your to-do list? the time is now: talking with your doctor about important health screenings is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your wellbeing.
“regular health screenings facilitate early detection and treatment of conditions before they become major problems,” said karen nelson, MD, Franciscan Health System’s division chief for Women’s Health and oB/gYn with Franciscan Women’s Health associates in the new Medical office Build-ing at St. Joseph. “For example, cervical cancer has decreased 50 percent in the last 30 years in the United States due to routine pap screening.”
Here’s a closer look at why regular health screenings should be on your to-do list.
Feel Fine? HealtH problems can still lurk “When it comes to healthy behaviors, receiving preventive screenings tops the list,” said Holly Dickson, MD, an oB/gYn at Enumclaw Medical Center – Cole Street. “all women should see their doctor for a general health evaluation annually.”
Many screenings, from blood tests to pap smears, can detect problems you may not know you have. that’s because many conditions such as elevated blood sugar and cervical cancer often don’t have any symptoms early on. “the good news is the earlier your doctor detects something the easier it is to
treat,” Dr. nelson said. Heart disease in men receives
lots of attention, but it’s also the number one killer of women. routine screenings can pick up warning signs such as high blood pressure and abnormal choles-terol, which are treatable. However, without screenings these issues could go undetected for too long and you may not know anything is wrong until you suffer a serious medical issue like a heart attack.
put your HealtH in your Hands Health screenings offer you a barometer of how well you’re doing health-wise. When you receive the recommended screenings regularly, you’ll also be able to tell where you’re improving in your health — and where you could be doing better to stay on the healthiest path possible.
“Besides preventive screenings, I also recommend 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, on most days,” Dr. Dickson said. “Women should consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, choose whole-grain, high-fiber food, consume fish at least twice a week, limit saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and avoid trans-fatty acids.” With healthy choices, you have the chance to improve your health every single day.

and more of us each day.
Mike Strom lost more than 100 pounds after having gastric bypass surgery at Franciscan Center for Weight Management.
www.FHShealth.org 9
Fortunately, the Franciscan Center for Weight Management is ready to help patients achieve healthier weights. as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, we have the experience you can trust. More weight loss surgeries are performed here than at any other hospital in the South puget Sound.
tHe Franciscan edgeat the Franciscan Center for Weight Management, all weight loss procedures are done using minimally invasive techniques, including advanced laparoscopy and the DaVinci® surgical system. With minimally invasive techniques, surgeons can see into the body with great clarity, yet the incisions are smaller than ever before. Scarring is minimized, patient safety is enhanced
and recovery usually happens much more quickly.
But what finally drives someone to get serious about a healthy weight through weight loss surgery? Haroon anwar, MD, FaCS, a surgeon at the Center, said each story is unique but a few common themes emerge.
“often, my patients see parents go through health problems, and they commit to becoming more health-conscious,” Dr. anwar said. “they also get tired of taking multiple medications to treat obesity-related illness such as high blood pressure. they want to feel better.”
Many want to get back to doing activities they once enjoyed or have yet to try, added troy Houseworth, MD, FaCS, a surgeon at the Center. “the weight has kept them off their feet,
which has caused them to gain more weight. It’s a vicious cycle,” he said.
are you ready to cHange?Whatever the reason people seek out surgery, weight gain that persists and causes a person to have a body-mass index of 40 or up — or 35 and up plus a comorbid condition such as diabetes — usually makes a person a candidate for weight loss surgery.
a good first step, said Dr. Houseworth, is to come to a free, no-obligation seminar to learn about surgical weight loss options. “patients get an overview of the different
surgeries and learn for themselves which one fits them best,” he said.
Franciscan Center for Weight Management also offers effective medical weight loss, which includes guided weight loss, extensive nutrition education and even group programming.
no matter how much weight you have to lose, Franciscan is ready to help you achieve a healthy weight.
Haroon P. Anwar, MD, FACS
Cruising to a healthy weightBy the time Mike Strom turned 30, he
weighed more than 200 pounds. When
he topped out at 292 at the age of 46, he
knew he needed help. Help came in the
form of gastric bypass surgery at Franciscan
Center for Weight Management.
At first, surgery worried Mike’s wife. But
with a painful skin condition called psoriasis,
as well as a type of arthritis that accompa-
nies it — “never mind feeling like my head
would explode when I reached down to tie
my shoes!” — Mike was ready to feel better.
Plus he had elevated liver enzymes and was
on his way to a diabetes diagnosis.
Today at age 50, Mike has maintained a
healthy weight of 184 for two-and-a-half
years — a weight loss of nearly 110 pounds.
His psoriasis is all but gone, and he’s cut his
arthritis medication in half. He has more
energy to run his computer business and
go on hikes with his wife. His liver enzymes
are normal, too.
Maybe most surprising to Mike was
the way his appetite decreased. “We went
on a cruise three months after surgery,
and I just didn’t want to eat,” he said.
“I can get out and enjoy life a lot more
— and it’s great.”

Who hasn’t been there: You wake up in the middle of the night with a fever and a cough, a stomach virus takes over your household at midnight or a mysterious rash appears on your child’s leg right after bath time. Before, your options consisted of taking a trip to the emergency room or an urgent care clinic or counting the hours until your doctor’s
office opens. now Franciscan Medical group patients have another choice.
“With Franciscan after-hours service, care is available to our primary care patients who have medical issues that come up after office hours or when our prompt Care urgent care clinics are closed, but the problem isn’t acute

enough to have to go to the Er,” said Janis Fegley, Do, a family medicine physician at Franciscan Medical Clinic – Canyon road, and Franciscan Medical group primary care division chief.
Quality care, Quick serviceWhen you call any Franciscan primary care clinic after the clinic has closed, a team of physicians or advanced registered nurse practitioners are ready to care for you through a “virtual visit.” the provider may be able to treat you over the phone. “For example, they can call a prescription into a 24/7 pharmacy and you can get started on the medication right away,” Dr. Fegley said.
In some instances, you may be able to video chat with the provider so he or she can see and diagnose an issue like a burn or a rash. “this service doesn’t replace primary care, but increases your access
to it,” said Cliff robertson, MD, chief operating officer of Franciscan Health System. after your virtual appointment, the provider will e-mail a visit summary to both you and your primary care provider. “It is truly an extension of your relationship to your Franciscan primary care doctor,” Dr. robertson said.
more money in your pocketnot only is the service incredibly conve-nient, it’s also affordable. “the cost is significantly less than the typical co-pay of an emergency room or urgent care visit,” Dr. robertson said. Currently, this service is available to those covered by commer-cial insurance or without coverage for a $20 flat fee billed directly to the patient.
now you don’t have to wonder if that terrible cough or stomachache can wait until morning — we’re there for you whenever you need us — day or night.

All babies need loving, expert care to usher them into the bright, bustling world outside their mother’s womb. Some, especially those born very early or critically ill, need special-ized monitoring and support. St. Elizabeth Hospital, as a part of Franciscan Health System, offers a complete range of prenatal, obstetric, delivery and post-partum care — even for fragile newborns — right here in our community.
seattle cHildren’s partnersHip and neonatal intensive care through a new partnership which began april 1, 2013, Seattle Children’s Hospital neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners provide around-the-clock support and consultation at our St. Elizabeth Hospital Family Birth
Center and its level I special care nursery. the same experts will provide 24/7 care in the level III neonatal intensive care unit (nICU) opening soon at St. Joseph Medical Center in tacoma. the new level III nICU at St. Joseph will provide care for our most fragile infants – even those born at St. Elizabeth.
“For families, this means being able to get advanced care close to home,” said peter robilio, MD, maternal-fetal medicine specialist and medical director for women’s services for Franciscan. “Staff in the nICU can care for newborns who arrive as many as 12 weeks early or weigh as little as 2 pounds, 2 ounces. We can
also provide respiratory services, such as ventila-tion for babies who need help breathing. these are real advancements in what we’re able to offer in our communities.”
get liFe oFF to a positive startthe Family Birth Center at St. Elizabeth is a new state-of-the-art facility that combines superb care with the latest technology to give each family a pleasant, personalized and safe birth.
“Because St. Elizabeth is a smaller hospital, the labor-and-delivery staff can provide more individual care than at some larger hospitals. they do a great job. they’re present, flexible and very capable, and they develop good relationships with the families they care for,” said Joseph Magley, MD, a family medicine doctor who also specializes in obstetrics at Franciscan Medical Clinic in Enumclaw.
the birth center’s labor-and-delivery rooms and post-partum rooms are private, spacious and comfortable. a mom’s support person has a place to sleep in the room with her, and her baby “rooms in” as well so they can bond and breastfeed. It’s all part of Franciscan’s commit-ment to get life with your baby off to a positive start and give you the family care you need.

Do you often feel tired during the day? Do you sometimes nod off while sitting at your desk or talking to your spouse? You may think these signs are related to stress, but a sleep disorder could be at play.
“Sleep makes up one-third of our lifetime,” said board certified neurolo-gist and sleep medicine specialist David Brown, MD, who is also medical director of the St. Francis Sleep Disorders Center in Federal Way. “Inadequate amounts of sleep can affect your daytime function-ing, alertness, attention and memory.”
Insufficient sleep can also increase your risk for a variety of health problems, including weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease.
breatHe easier, sleep betterIf you think you have a sleep problem, you may want to ask your doctor for a referral to a Franciscan Sleep Disorders Center. Sophisticated technology allows our Sleep Disorders Centers staff the ability to perform comprehensive overnight sleep tests that evaluate what’s causing your problem. “the sleep tests are performed in a comfortable, home-like atmosphere,” said Daniel
+ being sleepy can be a serious health risk. Seven minutes online with SleepAware could change your life. Visit FhShealth.org/SleepAware to get started.
Clerc, MD, board certified in family practice and sleep medicine at Franciscan Medical Clinic - Enumclaw.
Sleep tests are most commonly used to diagnose sleep apnea. With sleep apnea, your breathing may pause repeatedly throughout the night. the most com-mon kind is obstructive sleep apnea, in which your airway becomes blocked while you sleep.
If you have sleep apnea, a sleep specialist can offer treatment options such as continuous positive airway pressure (Cpap). the machine’s mask fits over your nose and applies gentle
pressure to help keep your airway open while you sleep. patients who use a Cpap often report that they sleep and feel better very quickly.
You may also need a sleep test to diagnose restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, rEM behavior disorder (in which you act out your dreams), noctur-nal seizures and more.
improve your sleep and Quality oF liFeSome patients have the option of doing a home sleep study. rather than staying overnight at the center, you’ll receive a kit to use overnight with items that record information such as airflow, blood oxygen levels, and breathing effort. a sleep specialist can use this data to help diagnose an issue.
While sleep disorders can increase your risk for illness, you’re also likely to have a sleep disorder if you already have a condition such as heart failure, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, difficulty losing weight or a history of stroke. If you have any of these medical conditions or symptoms of a sleep problem, ask your doctor whether a sleep test may be right for you.
“Sleep problems often go undiagnosed for far too long,” Dr. Clerc said. “treat-ments are available that can improve your sleep as well as your overall quality of life.”
