WELCOME THE STRANGER
We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God. BAPTISM PREP CLASS-Our next baptism preparation class is Saturday, September 7 at 9 a.m. You
must call to register for this class. Please call after August 21. If there is no answer, dial 121 for Vickie’s ext. and leave a message. To Schedule a Baptism - In order to baptize at St. Elizabeth’s, the parents of the child should be registered members of St. Elizabeth’s, or live within our boundaries. Parents please come to the office to schedule your child’s baptism. You will need to bring in the baby’s birth certificate, from the county, the godparents’ confirmation certificates, if the godparents are married, a copy of their church marriage certificate and proof of Baptism prep classes for parents and godparents. We do baptisms the 1ST & 2ND weekends of the month. Baptisms will be held on the 3RD
weekend only if Spanish is requested. The first person to come into the office with all necessary paperwork to register for a weekend will get to pick which day, Saturday or Sunday, for all baptisms that weekend. You must register in the office, before the date of your child’s baptism and you must
have all paperwork!
Pope’s August Intention Families, Schools of Human Growth That families, through their life of prayer and love, become ever more clearly “schools of true human growth”.
BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Breaking Open the Word is a program we have
here at St Elizabeth Ann Seton on Sunday mornings beginning at 10:10 to 11:20 AM. It is an opportunity to read and discuss the Sunday scripture readings for that week. This is a great way to learn scripture and how it applies to our lives today.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day.
An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. Learning Points about the Eucharist Recently, there has been some questions about the “power” of the Eucharist. In future weeks, I will take a moment to list 10 facts about the Sacrament of the
Eucharist. Here are the NEXT TWO points:
7) Commits us to the poor. Reminds us that we are to share the table with those we
encounter including the “least” of his people.
8) Spiritual consolation. Holy Communion is a foretaste of the joys of heaven so it can
produce joy in us as we experience real unity with God. If we are feeling beaten down
by the difficulties of this world, the Eucharist can fill us with consolation and peace.
