Thinking of Becoming a Priest? God calls some young men to be priests. Are you one of them? The Diocese of San Angelo invites you (10th grade and older) to a Discernment
Retreat on August 2-4. Discernment through pray, talks and activities will help you learn what God is calling you to. The retreat will be held at Holy Family, Abilene. Contact either Fr. Mark or Fr. Tim for applications and details and transportation to and fro. MOMS & DADS, consider talking to your sons about their vocation in life. If they are considering priesthood, please direct them to this opportunity. (Call Fr. Mark or Fr. Tim at 367-4657 to get more information about attending this retreat).
APRIL 2020 TOUR OF ITALY Fr. Mark is organizing an 11-day tour of Italy for late April 2020. We will visit Rome [papal audience], Assisi, Florence, Sorrento, Amalfi and Livorno. Masses daily. Why the sea coast city of Livorno? In Livorno we will follow the footsteps of Elizabeth Seton, an Episcopalian who visited that city in 1803/4. Her husband William Seton died tragically in Livorno. There she first encountered Roman Catholicism. At first she was amused by her Italian Catholic friends’ efforts to make her Catholic, but when she left Livorno for her native New York City several months later, she was determined to become a Catholic … a path that led her to sainthood. Trip will cost $4-5,000 per person. If interested, contact Fr. Mark at 432-202-0336.
Pope’s July Intention The Integrity of Justice That those who administer justice may work with integrity, and that the injustice which prevails in the world may not have the last word.

GOD WANTS TO BE KNOWN
The Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy praises God for inscribing the commandments in our very bodies. God’s law is not distant or foreign, but a natural part of us. In his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul echoes Moses, praising God for becoming one of us. The truly human, flesh-and-blood Jesus reminds us that God always wants to be recognizable and familiar to us. Jesus, who is also truly God, wants to be on intimate terms with each of us. God’s passionate desire to be known by us is almost too wonderful to take in. Luke’s Gospel helps us understand how to respond. The Good Samaritan parable provides practical advice for those who believe in God’s intimate love for them and want to share that love with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On a summer day, with the windows open, we may hear the sound of church bells. Bells seem to have come into church life in Irish monasteries around the seventh century, and spread around the Christian world by Irish monks on missionary journeys. By the eighth century, bells were standard equipment in even small parish churches. An ancient ceremony, once called the “baptism of the bells,” recognizes that the church bell has a voice to call people to awareness and summon them to worship, and even bestows a name on the bell. In a world without clocks or watches, the bell had an indispensable role. For calling monks in from the fields for prayer, or alerting far-flung visitors, the bell’s voice was enhanced by hoisting
it high into a tower. Soon it was learned that the sound of several bells clanging together in harmony imparted a sense of joy to great celebrations, and bell towers prospered, some chock full of bells. Different combinations of rings could indicate a death, a Mass, a wedding, a fast day, the curfew at the end of day, and the Angelus. Before electricity, bell-ringing was hard work indeed: the biggest bell in the Catholic world, in Cologne, Germany, weighs twenty-seven tons! There’s no substitute for the resonant roar of a mighty bell; electric chimes are not eligible for blessing!—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CCD Time Change for
Middle School
In an attempt to make things
easier for parents, we have moved
Middle School CCD to Sunday
mornings, to coincide with the
Elementary Ed. Classes will be in
the youth building,
10 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.
I understand that no matter what
time is chosen for classes, there
will always be some conflict, but
when signing up for classes this
year, please make an effort to
make attendance a priority in the
upcoming year. Since the youth
are not of driving age, this is
completely upon the parent.
We look forward to a strong year.
