FORMER EPISCOPALIANS/METHODISTS If you have joined the Roman Catholic Church and want more information about the Anglican Ordinariate, please call Fr. Mark – 432-367-4657. The Ordinariate seeks to integrate Anglicanism with Roman Catholicism!

FAKE BEGGARS From time to time you may see people begging at the doors after mass with signs. Fr. Mark & Fr. Tim have repeatedly told them about Catholic Charities but they refuse to use its services. We believe they are FAKE and we ask that you do not encourage them by giving them money. Give your charitable dollars to Catholic Charities.

New Year’s Eve Te Deum End the year with a Plenary Indulgence!! A Plenary Indulgence is available to those who pray/sing the Te Deum in church on Dec. 31, thanking God for His blessings during the concluding year. The other conditions for a plenary indulgence must be fulfilled: confession, Holy Communion, and prayers for the pope’s intentions. We have scheduled the Te Deum to follow the 5:30 pm on Dec. 31. The 30-minute ceremony will include Adoration and the Te Deum.

SALVATION IN DAILY LIFE This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life. The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was instituted in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith.

We ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT THOMAS BECKET (1118-1170) December 29 To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and politics to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ.

Renouncing secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and justice for Christ’s sheep. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A Brief Note from the Office of Youth Ministry As we begin the NEW YEAR, I wanted for us to take a moment and ask ourselves a

very simple, yet complicated, question: WHO AM I? Often times, we identify ourselves with the traits we exhibit; artist, actor, singer; or by the profession or job we do; youth minister, teacher, doctor; or by our vocation; husband, wife, father, mother. But in truth, that does

not define WHO WE ARE. Often times we may or may not reply to this question with: I am a Christian. And if we do? How far down the list is that reply? As followers of Christ, is that not what should be FIRST and everything else comes from that? Perhaps now is a great opportunity, as we begin the NEW YEAR, for us to resolve to do something we may always

INTEND to do, but may forget to do fully and NOT JUST ON SUNDAYS; for us to show others just how we are good Christians - how we are called to be followers of CHRIST!

Happy New Year!!!
