FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAO All Saints DayLast Sunday we celebrated All Saints Day.

We gave thanks to God for the many saints in heaven who intercede for us and gave us a good example of faith in their lives. Let us imitate them and strive to live in holiness every day of our lives.

All Souls Day Last Monday, November 2, we commemorated all the faithful departed especially those who have died from our parish since last October. I could not help but reflect on how fortunate we all are to be part of a such a grace–filled community, as the 80 names of our deceased parishioners from St. Celestine and St. Cyprian churches were read so caringly at the Memorial Masses on Monday.

We live in a society which often has little patience or understanding for those who grieve and mourn. As I often say in the funeral mass, our faith doesn’t sweep away the natural sadness we feel at what we call “the loss” of a loved one. It is right for us to grieve. It would be unnatural for us not to do so, and the deeper our love the deeper our grief will be. Moments and celebrations such as our Remembrance Mass offer a healing forum for those who are grieving. Let us continue to remember our loved ones and in a special way, let us offer Masses on their behalf during the month of November.

November is the month when we pray for those who have died. How comforting it is for us

to have a faith that tells us that our prayers on their behalf are helpful to them. How valuable it is that they can continue to help us from their places in Heaven. We can pray for them when we come to church.

We received our faith from our ancestors. They lived, had children and raised their children within the Church. They made it through indescribably difficult times borne up by their faith. In the worst of times they took solace in the knowledge that their lives were not being lived in vain. A time would come when there was no more suffering, no more tears, no more sadness. Their lack of understanding would be replaced with absolute clarity. They would see their family members and friends again. They would see God face to face.

We live each day as God’s children. We do our best to set a worthy example for our own children and grandchildren to follow. We struggle with our own questions about the meaning of life. We too, look forward to the day when the Lord comes again. That’s what the month of November is about.

We approach the end of the Church year and reflect on the end of time as we know it. As we commend our deceased friends and relatives to the loving mercy of God, we prepare for the time when we will follow them. None of us know the day or the hour. All we can do is to live each day worthily.

This month, we can pray for our deceased family members and friends. We can make peace with those we have harmed and pray

for the willingness to forgive those who have harmed us. We can live each day, ready for the coming of the Lord, ready for our lack of understanding to be permeated with the sure knowledge of God’s love for us.

Bishop–Elect Grob Mass of Thanksgiving Next Friday, Cardinal Blase Cupich will ordain three auxiliary bishops– Kevin M. Birmingham, Jeffrey S. Grob and Robert J. Lombardo at 2 PM on November 13 at Holy Name Cathdral. It is a day of great joy for the Archdiocese and especially for our parish community to have one of our own ordained, Bishop–elect Jeffrey S. Grob. Please pray for them on that day and you can watch the livestream at www.archchicago.org/watch2020ordination for the liturgy of Episcopal Ordination.

Bishop–elect Grob will have a mass of Thanksgiving next Sunday, November 15 at 10:30 AM at St. Celestine Church with livestreaming as well. Please join him on that special day bysigning up for mass on our website or by calling the Pastoral Center. We can have up to 200 people in church with social distancing.

Thank you for your continued support to our parish during this difficult time and may God bless and protect each one of you and your family!

Be safe and stay healthy!

In prayer,

Fr. Paul

SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI (1850—1917) November 13

Burly longshoremen glared at the woman in widow’s dress who interrupted their drinking to beg money, in broken English, for her orphanage. The bar exploded in laughter as one man responded by spitting in her face. “That was for me,” the woman smiled. “Do you have anything for the children?”

Given today’s national debate, could it be as much God’s sense of humor as God’s will for our sanctification that our first American saint should be an immigrant and naturalized citizen? Frances Cabrini, adopting the name Xavier, confided to Pope

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Leo XIII her longing to follow her Jesuit patron to Asia. But the Pope replied, “Not East—West!” So she and her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart exchanged exotic dreams of China for the impoverished reality of Italian ghettos across the United States and Central and South America.

Before her death, Frances had founded seventy educational, health care, child, and family service institutions. Today, from Siberia to Ethiopia, in sixteen countries, Mother Cabrini’s sisters and lay associates embody her practical spirituality: “Let’s get to work! We’ll have eternity to rest!” Peter Scagnell

© J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

If it ever crossed your mind that Jesus was somewhat lacking in a sense of humor, today’s Gospel should belie any such notion. Jesus’ story of the five wise and five foolish bridesmaids is downright hilarious. The circumstances of the story were surely familiar to Jesus’ listeners, just as they are—if we think about it—to us. Weddings never, ever start on time. There’s always a delay. Buttons pop off at the last minute. Flowers wilt. Cars full of wedding guests get caught in traffic. Soloists contract laryngitis. Brides or grooms or priests show up late! So the only reasonable way to approach a wedding is with a sense of humor, to realize that something probably will go awry, and, when that happens, to smile about it.

Jesus tells this funny story to encourage us to be watchful, yes; to be ready, yes. But he doesn’t tell it to make us dour and somber. The heavy–hearted tremble, waver, lose sight of their place and purpose, and fall asleep. The lighthearted know that the unexpected will happen—is bound to happen—so they are awake in their place and ready in their purpose when it comes.

ON OIL FUTURES

©2020 By John B. Reynolds

([email protected])

I coached my parish grade school’s track team and cross–country team years ago, and I got

a lot of eye–rolling whenever I started to wax poetic. It’s not that I told my young charges to be one with the cinder track or the forest preserve trail.

Well, OK. I did some of that. But the eye–rolling began in earnest when I told them (repeatedly) that they were athletes, that God fashioned us all as athletes, that we were built to run, jump, throw. I told them to never stop training––to never stop running/jumping/throwing––especially when their competitive sports days were over. In essence, I told them to just keep moving.

And this idea of life–long participation in something we’re born to do comes to mind now as I consider the parable of the ten virgins who await the bridegroom. Five bring extra lamp oil; five don’t. When the groom arrives, the foolish virgins (Jesus’s word, not mine) ask the wise virgins (again, Jesus’s word) for oil. They say no, as there’s not enough for all the lamps. The foolish go to buy more, but when they return, the groom’s already inside, and the door is locked. And when they knock, the groom says––to my ears, anyway––ten of the most chilling words in Scripture: “Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.” As professed disciples of the Christ, could there be anything worse than Jesus not recognizing us when it’s all said and done? But it hits me now––just now––that when Jesus says, “Therefore,

stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour,” he may not be speaking of the Parousia or even our own personal end times. He may be speaking of the many times God shows himself in our lives, but we’re too busy to notice. As such, it’s more like us saying to God, “I don’t know you…” Yikes.

I know that I can’t earn heaven. I know that nothing I do (or don’t do) will make God love me any more (or less). I know that salvation is a gift, purchased for us with the nails. Still, I think that we have to prepare for the feast, and that the readiness is on us. The way I see it, the oil in the parable represents everything we do to get closer to Jesus, both one–on–one, and by recognizing him in friend and stranger alike. That’s how relationships grow. How can Jesus know us if we don’t at least make an effort to know him?

We’re never sure when God will show up in our lives. And yet, remaining 100% vigilant is perhaps impossible. All of the virgins fall asleep, after all. But the five with oil are prepared when the bridegroom comes. The five without, aren’t. Now if my metaphor is true––if the oil

in the parable is everything we do to get closer to Jesus––then maybe the wise virgins are like my grade school athletes who are still running/jumping/throwing.

Instead of spending the last twenty years on the couch, they’ve worked at staying in shape and are now better prepared for a lifetime of fitness. Those on the couch can still get in shape, certainly, but why wait? Similarly, we can come to Jesus on our deathbeds, but why wait? Surely it’s best to build a relationship with the Christ now, instead of betting on our oil futures somewhere down the road.

2020-21 School Year Dear Parishioners, Alumni and Friends, It is without saying this year has been like none other than we have collectively experienced. We have also been blessed, and I am grateful for you, our parishioners, alumni and friends that have shown their support in many ways. Your gifts to St. Celestine have made a great impact on our school and the programs we offer our children, especially the technology that we offer all our students. It became very apparent this year how important technology is in all our lives. Our investment in devices, professional development, remote programming, and upgraded bandwidth has made learning equitable and accessible for all remote learners. Our teachers have been able to provide individualized instruction targeting specific areas of need for all learners (remote and on campus) while maintaining a rigorous curriculum. Most importantly, our technology program has made it possible for students to connect daily with their teachers through video conferencing. We strive to have the best technology possible for all students at St. Celestine. These offerings include: iReady, STEAM, Digital Storytelling, Coding & 3D Design, Classroom Technology, Digital Citizenship, 1:1 Chromebooks & iPads, Technology Center, Robotics, G Suite for Education, Celtechs, Interactive Whiteboards and much more. These programs develop the 21st century skill set necessary for students to succeed in high school and beyond. We are grateful to you for your continued support to our annual fund. Because of you, we are a thriving school and able to offer cutting-edge technologies to our students. As you know, technology is constantly being upgraded but with your continued support you will help us keep it state-of-the-art for our children to benefit this school year. Gifts to the annual fund directly support the 1:1 technology initiative which provides iPads and Chromebooks as well as other hardware, network infrastructure, software applications and licensing for over 550 devices throughout the school. We thank you for supporting the annual fund and more importantly for helping us prepare children for their future. Sincerely,

Sheila Klich, Principal and all the faculty and staff at St. Celestine School P.S. Please see giving form with this letter, fill out and drop off at the school office or give online today. The children thank you! Please share this link with other family and friends that are interested and able to help our children as well. givecentral.org/location/313/event/20175

We need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. If you are high school age or older and are healthy with no underlying health conditions, please consider assisting with funerals, baptisms, weddings, reconciliation, and daily or Sunday Masses.

Funerals are held Monday through Saturday at both churches, usually at 10 AM and 11:30 AM.

Weddings are held on Saturday afternoons in both churches. Baptisms are held on Saturdays and Sundays at both churches, usually in the early afternoon.

Reconciliation takes place on Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine.

There is an 8 AM Tuesday Mass at St. Cyprian and 8 AM Wednesday Mass at St. Celestine.

We are limited to 150 people at

St. Celestine and 50 at St. Cyprian to allow for social distancing.

Volunteers are needed to greet, check off attendees, sanitize hands, manage the flow of congregants, direct people to seating, usher, clean, and sanitize the worship space. You must wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing.

All volunteers must understand that even with precautions, we cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to Covid–19. All volunteers must attend a training.

Please submit the website Online Form to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer, and the days of the week and times of the day that are best for you. This is a massive undertaking and many hands make light work. Find the sign up on the website.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

CAN YOU VOLUNTEER? YOU MUST SIGN UP TO ATTEND MASS

The Archdiocese of Chicago requires that anyone attending Sunday Mass register in advance online. The privilege to reopen for Mass is offered with a limit to the maximum number of people who can be in the churches at one time.

We must maintain records for the Illinois Department of Public Health of all who enter our churches for contact tracing when a confirmed case of COVID–19 is identified. You may sign up for the weekend Masses and can access the link to SignUp Genius on the website and through our Facebook page.

Daily Mass, which takes place on Tuesdays at 8 AM at St. Cyprian and Wednesdays at 8 AM at St. Celestine, and Reconciliation, which takes place most Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine (check the website first), does not require a reservation; someone will take your information at church for daily Mass.

Remember the requirement to attend Sunday Mass has been lifted and we will continue to stream the 10:30 AM Mass live on Facebook and the website.

If you are not feeling well, are over 65 or compromised medically, we encourage you to participate by watching Mass on TV or online.

We want everyone to be safe!
