During the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass, we hear that this Mass is being offered for the repose of the soul of someone who has died, or for someone requesting prayers for a particular intention. If you would like a Mass offered, please call either office to schedule a Mass for your particular intention. The usual donation is $10. New Mass cards are available as well.
Last Sunday at our 10:30 AM Mass, we kicked off Catholic Schools Week. This year’s theme, “Catholic
Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.,” focuses on the important spiritual, academic and societal contributions provided by a Catholic education firmly rooted in the Truth of the Gospel.
Schools typically observe the week with Masses, Open
Houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.
The success of our school rests primarily with the generous and hardworking individuals who diligently go about every day fulfilling the vision of Catholic education. This great team of collaborators is headed by our principal, Sheila Klich. Alongside her stands a faithful group of committed teachers, teacher’s aides, support staff, room moms, members of parents club, school board and committees, volunteers, and all of the good,
caring people who I have probably neglected to mention. Especially this year with the pandemic, they have to do their double workload. I ask you to keep them in your prayers and make sure to thank our principal and teachers when you see them. Our parish is indebted to them for all they do!
I also would like to thank the parents of our school children who see Catholic education as a value and who are financially able to make the sacrifice to send your children to St. Celestine school. Please bring them to church every Sunday to worship and praise our Almighty God. Let us do everything we can to keep us safe during this year.
In Prayer,Fr. Paul
FROM MRS KLICH:
Please check out the Virtual Tour of St. Celestine School on the website stcelestineschool.org. This is a great way to learn about the teachers and get a sense of the wonderful things St. Celestine School has to offer.
Please share the tour with friends and families who may be considering schools for next year. Private tours are available and the registration form is available online. Let them know St. Celestine School is a wonderful community!
Current school families, please register now for the 2021—2022 school year on the school website.

THE GOOD NEWS
Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse yet, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; / they come to an end without hope” (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, these lamentations, not when taken alone.
Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is the “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven

The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the penitential rite. Both are acts of praise. In the penitential rite, we sing of the mercy of Christ. In the Gloria we praise God’s saving action in the universe.
The Gloria is a relatively late addition to the Mass. It first appeared in the Roman liturgy in the sixth century, and then it was sung only by the pope—and only on Christmas! With time, the hymn came to be sung by bishops on major feasts, and then by priests; finally, it became the song of the entire assembly. With the advent of more elaborate musical settings, the people gradually stopped singing the Gloria, until
THE GLORIAthis song of the people became the exclusive domain of the priest and the choir. But the liturgical reforms have restored it to its place as primarily the song of the assembly.
The language of the Gloria echoes the New Testament canticles. It may be begun by the priest, the cantor, and the entire assembly in varied combinations. The Gloria is sometimes called the “greater doxology,” and in some ways it is like an extended, ecstatic version of the familiar doxology (“Glory be to the Father”) prayed in the Divine Office and the rosary.

to announce the gospel to as many people as possible, “to save at least some” (9:22).
This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Peter’s mother–in–law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job’s, and Jesus is our savior. © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ON REGRETS, AND LEAVING CAPERNAUM“Regrets, I've had a few/ But then again/ too few to mention…” Frank Sinatra popularized the song My Way, but I think Paul
Anka wrote it. At least that’s what the Internet says… And I remember reading once that Anka’s record company––or maybe his
manager––wanted Anka to record the song himself. He did, eventually, but it seems that even as he was writing it, he had Sinatra in mind as the guy to sing it. Frank did, and the rest is history.
“Regrets, I've had a few/ But then again/ too few to mention…” In truth, I’ve never loved the lyrics, but these words give me pause, prompting me to recall things I did, but wish I hadn’t (or didn’t do, but wish I had). A friend occasionally accuses me of letting Catholic guilt drive my decisions. She’s been right a few times. Usually, though, I see my decisions based not so much on rules I learned at St. Anthony’s, but more so on what strikes me in a given situation as the right thing to do (or not do) from a discipleship perspective.
“Regrets, I've had a few/ But then again/ too few to mention…” Many years ago, I was catching a ride home from a colleague. It was a dark and stormy night. Really. Halfway home, I saw a person––male or female, I cannot even recall––in distress.
Perhaps he or she had simply fallen in the rain. Perhaps he or she had dropped a bag of groceries. Perhaps his or her car had broken down nearby. Too many shadows cloud my memory now. But I recall the look of anguish. And, I recall that I said nothing. I rationalized back then that I didn’t want to drag my friend driving into this, whatever “this” might prove to be.
“Regrets, I've had a few/ But then again/ too few to mention…” This is what Confession is for. I know God has forgiven me this and countless other actions/inactions prompted by a choice contrary to my call of discipleship. What’s more, I know that God has long ago even forgotten these shortcomings. For the most part, I’ve forgotten them, too. But this one comes to mind now, and oddly, it comes to mind in the context of today’s Gospel from the evangelist Mark. It is his telling of the end of Jesus’s first day on the job in Capernaum, and his early departure from there the next morning.
“Regrets, I've had a few/ But then again/ too few to mention…” When Jesus’s Passion begins a few years later, perhaps his disciples have a singular regret of their own: “We should have stayed in Capernaum…” Jesus was a rock star there, after all, curing folks
(including Simon’s mother–in–law) and driving out demons left and right. People loved him. But very early in Capernaum on Day 2––when everyone is looking for him––where do his friends find Jesus? Alone, in a deserted place, praying. I like to think he was praying for guidance about how to best tackle the Messiah mission now stretching out before him. “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also,” he tells Simon et. al., and again, the rest is history. But the larger message is clear. When Jesus seeks his best messianic step forward, he prays. As each of us seeks our own best discipleship step forward, prayer will guide us. “Regrets, I've had a few…” But time spent in prayer has never been one of them.

Thank you to Darlene Bauman who has run the Food Pantry at St. Cyprian for several years. The two food pantries are combining into one; the Alvernia Food Pantry that is open three Thursdays a month at St. Celestine. The boundaries will include River Grove so those using the St. Cyprian Food Pantry will still be served. A special thanks to the Madden Family who helped so much with the St. Cyprian Food Pantry. Thank you for serving those in need.

2021 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
You are invited to spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal materials you should have received in the mail. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one–time special collection: It is a pledged commitment to make a gift over time.
Your pledge can be made payable in installments.
Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer the call of Jesus to “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world.”
If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back. This year, we also encourage our parishioners to make their Annual Catholic Appeal gifts online: http://annualcatholicappeal.com.Thank you!
All registered parishioners should have received tickets in the mail. If you need additonal tickets, call the Pastoral Center at 708–453–2555. Please make checks payable to SMTG Parish. You can return the ticket stubs and payment to the collection baskets in the back of either church, mail them to St. Joseph Raffle, SMTG Parish, 3020 N. 76th Ct., Elmwood Park IL 60707, or drop them in a mailbox at the Rectory or Pastoral Center before noon on Saturday, April 3, 2021.
