Adult Education As the Jubilee Year of Mercy closed last fall, we continued to put our faith into action with events like making fleece blankets for the homeless, veterans, and hospitals. Our focus for the rest of the year was on the theme of “EncounterGrowWitness”. Two adult women and three children were prepared through RCIA and RCIC, and received their full initiation into the Church at the Easter Vigil. In addition, three men were received into the Catholic faith. The Magic Carpet Theatre presented the Parable Project during Advent, and At His Feet during Lent, featuring the stories of Woman at the Well, Martha and Mary. We hosted Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services as they explained their mission of providing education, support and resources during one of life’s most difficult moments. Our monthly Book Club continued with interesting selections and lively conversation. Adult Bible Study also continued as a weekly drop-in group which discusses the upcoming weekend mass readings.

Worship &Music Ministries

In Worship and Music Ministries, we experienced a very busy year filled with activities and events. The Liturgical Choir continued to stay strong and remain the focal point of our Music Ministries. We participated in several Taizé prayer services in the area, and were a featured choir at Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village. The Handbell Ensemble continued to make a joyful noise throughout the year, and the Art and Environment Team continued their dedication to keeping the church looking beautiful.

Christian Service We concluded the Year of Mercy activities by creating Care Cards for those needing encouragement. We continued the vicariate sponsored Dementia Series with a presentation on Palliative Care and Hospice. Other outreach included weekly communion services to the sick and homebound in area nursing homes and senior residences. Outreach to the poor included dinners at All Saints Soup Kitchen, lunches to the homeless of Detroit through Sr. Judie Ann, our parish food pantry, USDA monthly food assistance to low income residents, and the donation of thousands of handmade items from the craft group. Our Parish Nurse program continued monthly blood pressure screenings and provided information in the weekly bulletin on a variety of health and wellness issues. Life and Dignity of the Human Person was demonstrated by our support of local Right to Life activities. Our Care for God’s Creation efforts include cardboard, plastic bag, battery, and pen recycling.

Religious Formation &Youth Ministry The enrollment in grades 1-5 is divided between the Monday Night Program and Family Program. The Monday classes had 50 students regularly attending and the Family Program had a total of 39 students from 27 families participating. The Middle School Program had a total of 59 students that attended the various class sessions. Our students were taught by 18 dedicated catechists and assistants. Nineteen children were prepared for First Reconciliation and Eucharist with 2 catechists. Two catechists also

prepared the nineteen students who made their Confirmation. Children’s Liturgy of the Word which is offered on Sunday during the 9 and 11:00 masses averaged 10 students per session. There were 10 dedicated volunteers for this program. The Religious Formation students and families have been generous in donations to the food pantry, coloring lunch bags for Sr. Judie Ann, and creating cards for the sick and those in the military. The Family Faith Committee continued to bring fun events enjoyed by many of the families in the parish. Along with our standing tradition of Soup Bowl painting and movie nights, we had our first annual pancake breakfast with St. Nick. We also worked with the Worship Committee in organizing the presentation of Stone Soup where we made soup to enjoy as a simple meal and to be taken to a mission center in Detroit. We hope to continue these programs plus more in the coming year. The Youth Group was well attended in 2016-

17 with an average of 12 teens per meeting. We

participated in the annual MLK Day of Service

with other groups from the Vicariate cleaning an

urban lot that is a crossway for a lot of foot

traffic. Five teens travelled with me and another

parent to Port Sanilac for the CYO Camp Clean-

up, a favorite of the group. Hard work but lots of

fun and time to socialize with other teens. Our

calendar for the 2017-18 year is filling up with

the annual events and new ones as well. Four

teens will be going to the National Catholic

Youth Conference in Indianapolis in November

2017. This will be the first time teens from our

parish have attended this conference.
