Don’t Live a Lie/No Vivas una Mentira One day, my son was explaining to his mother that he felt she had lied to him. It was nothing very important, but he wanted to take this opportunity to share how important telling the truth is to him. He explained that he simply tells it like it is in all aspects of his life. But an hour later, we caught him in a lie! Again, it was not about a matter of life and death, but it was a lie. When confronted with his own previous words on how important the telling the truth was to him, he just smiled. Yes, the guilty often have no words of defense. Jesus said it best in Matthew 5: “Let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no.’” He was warning his disciples about false oaths and then in-structing them on the fullness of the Hebrew laws. We may try to do what we say and say what we mean, but it can be all too easy to fall short. We call ourselves disciples yet provide evidence to the contrary buy our actions (or lack of them). Even if we feel that we have lied to no one, we may have lied to ourselves. We portray ourselves as generous, thankful, and loving people, yet fail to answer God’s call in a situation because we perceive the cost to be too great. Jesus did not simply mean for his message to be about two words. He also meant that when you say you are a disciple, make sure you are a disciple as well.—Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

Through Operation Rice Bowl-a program of prayer, fasting, learning, and giving-what you give up for Lent can give hope to the poorest of the poor. Make this Lenten season one of awareness, compassion, and reflection. Operation Rice Bowl is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services and the Diocese of Norwich.
WHERE ARE CONTRIBUTIONS TO OPERATION RICE BOWL USED?
Operation Rice Bowl receives all of its support from individual and family contributions. Catholic Relief Services, the official overseas aid and development agency of Catholics in the United States, used 75% of all contributions for development projects* overseas. 25% of the moneys collected remain in the local diocese where they are used to support projects assisting the needy. Details of this program will appear in next Sunday’s Bulletin.

St. Joseph School celebrated National Catholic Schools Week from January 26th through Janu-ary 31st. During this time and through the following week, our school remembered our call to serve through a collection of non-perishable food items. A sampling of these were carried in the Offertory at Mass on the February 7, First Friday, a Mass that was planned and carried out by our Kindergarten and 4th graders. Bishop Michael Cote will make his annual visit to St. Joseph School on February 20th, when he will visit classes and speak with our children. The school family looks forward to the Bishop’s visits each year and extends to Bishop Cote a special “thank you” for taking the time to come. In planning our Lenten prayer for the students, St. Joseph School will continue the tradition of praying the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent, led by our 8th graders. Monday morn-ing prayer with the school family will center around the Baptismal symbols. Our February Play will be presented by the 6th grade on February 28th at 1 p.m.

Rev. Richard Roughan Scholarship/ La Beca del Padre Richard Roughan In August of 2010, The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich received a bequest from the estate of Rev. Richard F. Roughan, former Pastor of St. Paul Church in Waterford, Connecticut. The bequest stipulated that the funds be managed and dis-tributed by The Catholic Foundation on behalf of St. Paul Church with specific instructions that the funds be distributed in the form of two annual scholarships. The Rev. Richard F. Roughan Scholarship Fund is available to parishioners of St. Paul Church, Waterford, Connecticut. The Fund will provide a $5,000 grant to a parishioner who will be entering college/university in the Fall of 2020 and a $5,000 grant for a parishioner of St. Paul Church who is currently enrolled in a college/university and will be entering the Sopho-more, Junior or Senior year in 2020. This Scholarship is only available to registered parishioners who became members of St. Paul Church prior to December 31, 2019. Interested parties may obtain an application only from the St. Paul Parish Office. The deadline for the submission of the application is March 6, 2020 and it is to be sent or delivered to The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich, 197 Broadway, Norwich, CT 06360.

The Children in Faith Formation are making cards for the people in the nursing homes. They are also making cards for their family and expressing how happy they are to be a part of God’s family. The children celebrated with their classmates on February 9 the Sunday class and February 12 the Wednesday class.

You might have noticed that listed in the bulletin, in the Mass Intention announcements, the term Pro Populo as the intention for a particular Mass. The term Pro Populo in Latin means “For the People” and Canon Law, the code of law which governs the Catholic Church, calls for the pastor of a parish to celebrate one Mass each week for the intention of the parishioners. This is an ancient tradition of the Church and of the priesthood, which is required to pray for the people in their charge. The Pro Populo Mass may be celebrated on the weekend or the weekday. The intention for a Pro Populo Mass can be for the “health of parishioners” or “for their happy marriages or for struggling marriages,” it may be for “those parishioners who have died or for a deceased family member,” for “their children in need” or for any particular intention. Along with the Pro Populo Mass, a priest may also offer his daily breviary (from Latin brevis, 'short' or 'concise') is a liturgical book of the Latin liturgical rites of the Catholic Church containing the public or canonical prayers, hymns, the Psalms, readings, and notations for everyday use, especially by bishops, priests, and deacons in the Divine Office (i.e., at the canonical hours or Liturgy of the Hours, the Christians' daily prayer). These daily prayers of the Church which priests and religious (sisters and brothers) are required to pray each day, may also be offered for a host of reasons. I offer my morning prayers and Divine Office for the health of my parishioners and I offer Night Prayer for the repose of the souls of deceased parishioners and family members. The Church maintains that we are called to “pray unceasingly” and as a Church we do that by the public and private worship of the priests, religious, deacons and the laity who lift up their voices in prayer for the common good. What Makes a Mass intention and who can offer them? The holy sacrifice of the Mass may be offered for any noble reason—for the remem-brance of a departed loved one, for one’s good health, for someone undergoing a medical procedure, for an individual who is suffering a trail or tribulation in life, or as a birthday remembrance. Intentions may be announced to the public or be unannounced, simply listed as a ‘special intention.” What-ever the reason, the Mass is offered for the praise and glory of God and in worshiping the Lord, we ask Him to be with us in our need and to answer the prayer according to His Will. Baptism Preparation Classes/ Clases de preparación para el Bautismo Fr. Tony DiMarco conducts the Preparation Class for Baptism for infants and toddlers for the St. Brendan the Navigator Community. Classes are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the library of St. Joseph School, 25 Squire St, New London. Classes are in English and begin at 7:00pm. Please call your Church Office to make arrangements for the class and to schedule the Baptism of your child.

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee

Pro Life Mass/ Pro vida La Misa The monthly Diocesan Pro-Life Mass will take place at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich on Saturday, March 7 at 8:30 A.M. Please join our celebrant Rev. Walter Nagle at Mass as we pray to end abortion and for the healing for those who have had an abortion. Fol-lowing the Mass, the Rosary will be prayed both at the Cathedral and Planned Parenthood. The National March for Life organization, in cooperation with the Connecticut Catholic Public Affairs Conference and the Family Institute of Connecticut, are holding Connecticut ’s first official March for Life event on April 15, 2020 at the State Capitol. The March will be a time for Connecticut citizens to express their support for the life of the unborn and their opposition to euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. Although the issues which the March will address are controversial in our socie-ty, people of faith must speak the truth and follow the Gospel imperative to be a light unto the world. We will be joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths in this major demonstration. The Connecticut March for Life will start with a rally at the State Capitol at 11:45 a.m., followed by a march at 12:45 p.m. More details, including a list of speakers, to be announced soon.
