    MY FAITH

    Sacraments of

    Initiation

    Jesus shares his life

    with us by three spe-

    cial sacraments that

    get us started in the

    life of the Church and

    in the Kingdom of

    God. The first is Bap-

    tism. Catholics are

    usually baptized as

    babies, but they can

    be baptized at any

    age. Baptism is God’s

    way of forgiving our

    tendency to sin and

    bringing us into God’s

    family. The 2nd sacra-

    ment of initiation for

    adults is Confirma-

    tion. Eucharist comes

    3rd for adults, but for

    children the Eucharist

    is 2nd, and Confirma-

    tion later on. Confir-

    mation opens up the

    many gifts of the Holy

    Spirit that were given

    to us in Baptism. The

    Bishop comes to the

    church to confirm.

    The Eucharist, Holy

    Communion, is the

    gift of Jesus’s own

    Body and Blood. We

    become part of the

    Body of Christ.

SAINTS THIS WEEK (adapted from Companion to the Calendar

    by Mary Ellen Hynes)

    January 26—Saints Timothy and Titus

Both of these saints received let-

ters from St. Paul, so they have

books in the Bible named after

them. Timothy and Titus both trav-

eled with Paul. Timothy was a good

preacher. He became the first bish-

op of Ephesus, the city where St.

John lived with Mary. Titus was

probably from Antioch. He was a

    very talented peacemaker and

could help people turn to the right

    way.

    January 30—Mohandas Gandhi

On this day we remember a man

who was Hindu, not Christian. He

was from India where a caste sys-

    tem made some people

    “untouchable” for life. Gandhi

dressed like these people in pro-

test against the caste system. He

lived a simple life and believed in

    change through non-violence, a life-

    style which is honored today

    New Testament

    THE DIVINE AND HUMAN JESUS

    John 1: 1-18

The Gospel o f Matthew begins

with the names of Jesus ’s hu-

the Bapt is t and h is parents

Zechar iah and El i zabeth , and

wi th the s tory o f Mary , Joseph,

and baby Jesus . John’s Gospel

    begins very d i f ferently .

John te l ls us that Jesus is the

WORD of God. He wr i tes that

Jesus the Son of God was wi th

God f rom the very beginn ing,

wi th God in Creat ion, and the

t rue L ight of the World . In h is

    Every person’s finances

    and family situation is dif-

    ferent. Jesus makes it clear

    that it matters not how

much one gives, but that it

    is planned, calculated,

    at least somewhat sacrifi-

    cial (see Luke 24:1-4),

    and not simply from what

is “leftover” at the end of

    the month. We propose the

    tithe (10%) as the ideal

    every family can consider

    working towards. This

    means taking steps to give

    5% to one’s parish, and 5%

    to other charities or causes

    you have personal passion

    for. You can register online
