His father was a notary public. While still at the farm he administered the presidential oath of office to his son. Some- one later asked him, ‘’How did you know that you could adminis- ter the presidential oath to your own son?” He replied, ‘’I didn’t know I couldn’t.’’ That laconic response, characteristic of the Coolidges, expresses a sentiment which many of us share. We want freedom. We want to believe that whatever is not forbidden is allowed. Perhaps to our surprise, Jesus felt the same way. He favored freedom. The ques- tion which the scribe posed to Jesus was not an idle one: ‘’Which is the first of all the commandments?” He was thinking, of course, of all the regulations found in the Old Testament. The Rabbis had analyzed the Law and determined that it consisted of 613 distinct commandments, 248 positive and 365 negative. The scribe was sincere when he asked, ‘’Which is the first?” by which he meant, ‘’Which is the greatest?” Jesus did not hesitate. He im- mediately quoted from the Book of Deuteronomy, our first read- ing for this Sunday, ‘’You shall love the Lord your God with your whole being.’’ But Jesus did not stop there. Although to the ques- tion, ‘’Which is the first commandment?” there should be only one answer, Jesus insisted on adding a second: ‘’You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’’ This commandment he quoted not from the Book of Deuteronomy, but that of Leviticus. So we must question Jesus, ‘’Is there one great commandment, or are there two?” Jesus would respond, ‘’There is actually only one because you cannot truly love God if you do not love your neighbor, and you cannot probably love your neighbor if you do not love God.” Jesus reached out to the Book of Deuteronomy and then to the Book of Leviticus and joined their separate commandments into one. Thus, true Freedom is not license to do whatever we want. It is the liberty to do whatever we must to love God and others. Fr. Paul Materu

‘’I Didn’t Know I Couldn’t’’ When President Harding died in the summer of 1923, his vice President, Calvin Coolidge, was helping his father on his farm in Vermont. His father was a notary public. While still at the farm he administered the presidential oath of office to his son. The Rabbis had analyzed the Law and determined that it consisted of 613 distinct commandments, 248 positive and 365 negative. The scribe was sincere when he asked, ‘’Which is the first?” by which he meant, ‘’Which is the greatest?” Jesus did not hesitate.
