OUR PARISH PRAYER

4th Sunday of Advent

Today's Gospel is a call to tolerance on the part of Christians towards outsiders, and on the part of individuals or groupings within the Christian community towards other Christians. It is a warning to any who think they have a privileged position or special insight or some control over the working of the Spirit. Yet it is only fifty years ago that the Church was teaching 'extra ecclesiam, nulia salus'- there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church!'It is not only through the sacraments and the ministry of the Church that the Holy Spirit sanctifies, leads and enriches God's people. Distributing gifts at will (1 Cor 12:11), the Holy Spirit bestows special graces among the faithful of every rank. By these gifts they are made fit and ready to undertake various tasks and offices for the renewal and building up of the Church. 'The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one, to be used for the common good’ (l Cor 12:7).’

NATIONAL PRAYER

Gracious God, You have blessed this ancient land with many gifts, especially its people.

We thank you for the Year of Grace, a time to start afresh from Christ.

You invite us to contemplate the face of Jesus your Son, that we may experience a new wave of grace, and that the light of Christ may burn more brightly in our lives.

Attune our hearts and minds to the presence of your Holy Spirit, that our Church may be transformed, our relationships be healed, and our nation grow in compassion and justice.

With the intercession of St Mary MacKillop, who showed us new ways of living the Gospel, we make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Various members of our Parish Groups shall light the Year of Grace candle at each Mass, signifying the light of Christ in our lives.

Our candle lighters for this weekend are members of the Charismatic Prayer Group. They gather each week and pray together, and the graces from their prayers flow to the benefit of our whole parish community. Their devotion to prayer is a great example to us.

Permanent Deacons

The ministry of the Permanent Diaconate is being introduced in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Church tradition views as the first deacons the seven men chosen by the twelve apostles to assist them in their work of proclaiming the Good News in the rapidly growing church of Jerusalem (Acts 6: 1-6).

St Stephen, the first martyr, St Laurence and St Francis of Assisi are some of the deacons in successive ages of the Church. Over time, the diaconate became the final step in the training of priests.

The Eastern Churches retained the traditional structure of the Sacrament of Order. That is, as well as bishops and priests, they continued to ordain permanent deacons.

In 1972, Pope Paul VI restored the diaconate, open to married and unmarried men, as a permanent rank within the Sacrament of Holy Orders. In doing so, the Church renewed its mission of preaching, worship and service to the community.

What is the role of a deacon?

The bishop is the first evangeliser in his diocese. Deacons serve the bishop in his duty to bring the Good News to believers and unbelievers. Deacons are called to bring the presence of Jesus to all that they meet. They are well-placed to bring to the Church's leaders an awareness of the needs of the poor and of people distant from the Church.

Nationally, deacons minister in parishes, the military, prisons, ports, hospitals and diocesan agencies. The deacon works in harmony with the priests and lay leaders of the parish. The deacon supports and complements the active service of the lay faithful. The deacon may preach at Mass, preside at public prayer, administer the Sacrament of Baptism, assist at marriages and funerals.

There is no Children’s Liturgy during School Holidays. It will resume on

Sunday 14th October at 9.30am.

The Couples for Christ's Parish Retreat concludes this Sunday, 30 September 2012 from 2 - 4pm in the Gathering Space. For further information, contact the Parish Centre, 9546 8276 or Philip & Agnes Grijalvo, 0413 144 307.

First Reading: Numbers 11:25-29

A reading from the book of Numbers

The Lord came down in the Cloud. He spoke with Moses, but took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the spirit came on them they prophesied, but not again.

Two men had stayed back in the camp; one was called Eldad and the other Medad. The spirit came down on them; though they had not gone to the Tent, their names were enrolled among the rest. These began to prophesy in the camp. The young man ran to tell this to Moses, ‘Look,’ he said ‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’ Then said Joshua the son of Nun, who had served Moses from his youth, ‘My Lord Moses, stop them!’ Moses answered him, ‘Are you jealous on my account? If only the whole people of the Lord were prophets, and the Lord gave his Spirit to them all!’

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 18:8. 10. 12-14

R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple. R.

The fear of the Lord is holy, abiding for ever. The decrees of the Lord are truth and all of them just. R.

So in them your servant finds instruction; great reward is in their keeping. But who can detect all his errors? From hidden faults acquit me. R.

From presumption restrain your servant and let it not rule me. Then shall I be blameless, clean from grave sin. R.

Second Reading: James 5:1-6

A reading from the letter of St James

An answer for the rich. Start crying, weep for the miseries that are coming to you. Your wealth is all rotting, your clothes are all eaten up by moths. All

your gold and your silver are corroding away, and the same corrosion will be your own sentence, and eat into your body. It was a burning fire that you stored up as your treasure for the last days. Labourers mowed your fields, and you cheated them - listen to the wages that you kept back, calling out; realise that the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. On earth you have had a life of comfort and luxury; in the time of slaughter you went on eating to your heart’s content. It was you who condemned the innocent and killed them; they offered you no resistance. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: cf John 17:17

Alleluia, alleluia!Your word, O Lord, is truth:make us holy in the truth. Alleluia!

Gospel: Mark 9:38-43. 45. 47-48

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

John said to Jesus, ‘Master, we saw a man who is not one of us casting out devils in your name; and because he was not one of us we tried to stop him.’ But Jesus said, ‘You must not stop him: no one who works a miracle in my name is likely to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us.

‘If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.

‘But anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown into the sea with a great millstone round his neck. And if your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than to have two hands and go to hell, into the fire that cannot be put out. And if your foot should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life lame, than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye should cause you to sin, tear it out; it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell where their worm does not die nor their fire go out.’
