VOCATIONSCome Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love! "When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth." Are you inclined to let the Holy Spirit lead you to your true vocation in the Risen Lord…perhaps as a priest, deacon or consecrated religious? Talk to Msgr. Robert Aucoin or Fr. Doug Lucia at (315) 386 2543 [email protected] or Cathy Russell, the Diocesan Vocation Coordinator at (315) 3932920, ext. 1450 [email protected]. See us also on Facebook or at www.myvocation.net.

Creating a culture of vocation… THE VOCATION OF MARRIAGE When the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a Christian vocation it is saying that the couple’s relationship is more than simply their choice to enter a union, which is a social and legal institution. A great internet resource is: www.foryourmarriage.org an initiative of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) flourish? Pray!

Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work in their communities. We, as the Diocese of Ogdensburg, can support this appeal and ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the broader American Church. 10 Strategies

for Minimizing

Distractions at

Church

There’s a lot going on at church and it can be distracting. I imagine that for priests, it takes all of the charity in them to have patience with those that come to church.

Think about it:

 People arrive late

 Phones go off

No one sits in the front rows

People read the bulletin during Mass

 People are chewing gum

And the list goes on and on!

Notice that I didn’t add crying babies to the list at least they have a good excuse for not paying attention to what’s happening while church is “in session”. The rest of us? Not so much.

From a prayer perspective, church is hard. We feel like we should be able to pray while we are at Mass. We probably want to pray but there are just so many distractions. It’s also hard to simply leave our busy lives at the door and then flip the switch into prayer mode.

1. Leave your phone in the car. Unless it’s the dead of winter (or summer) and you deliver babies for a living, you can probably get away with leaving your phone in the car.

2. Check yourself before walking in the door. Take a breath. Remember that your life is about to take on new meaning. Pause.

To be continued next week.

Did you know . . .

INFANTS WHO DIE WITHOUT BEING BAPTIZED

The number of unbaptized babies “has grown considerably and therefore the reflection on the possibility of salvation for these infants has become urgent.” Traditional teaching has concentrated on the theory of limbo, a state which includes the souls of infants who die with original sin and without baptism. The idea of limbo began in the Middle Ages but it is not mentioned in the liturgy nor in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC §1261) nor in Sacred Scripture.

In Oct. 2004, Pope John Paul II assigned the International Theological Commission (ITC) to study this question. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger headed the Commission, made up of theologians, and its work continued even after he was elected Pope Benedict XVI (April 2005). He approved their final report on January 19, 2007. The ITC’s conclusion mirrored what is said in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: that without minimizing the importance of baptism, in any way, there is nonetheless hope of salvation for infants who die without benefit of that sacrament. The information provided here is based on the ITC, but it cannot be done justice in this small space.

Therefore, I will summarize some important points:

Because infants themselves cannot make the Profession of Faith that is necessary for baptism, they are baptized in the faith of their parents; parents therefore must be practicing their faith. .

We listen to the Word of God expressed in the Scriptures to provide us wisdom. However, with regard to the salvation of those who die without baptism, the Word of God says little or nothing.

The conclusion of the ITC is that the many factors that have been considered “give serious theological and liturgical grounds for hope that unbaptized infants who die will be saved and enjoy the beatific vision. We emphasize that these are reasons for prayerful hope, rather than grounds for sure knowledge. There is much that simply has not been revealed to us (cf. Jn 16:12). We live by faith and hope in the God of mercy and love who has been revealed to us in Christ, and the Spirit moves us to pray in constant thankfulness and joy (cf. 1 Thes 5:18).”

“What has been revealed to us is that the ordinary way of salvation is by the sacrament of baptism. None of the above considerations should be taken as qualifying the necessity of baptism or justifying delay in administering the sacrament. Rather, as we want to reaffirm in conclusion, they provide strong grounds for hope that God will save infants when we have not been able to do for them what we would have wished to do, namely, to baptize them into the faith and life of the church.
