SUNDAY THOUGHT

John 18:33-37

We celebrate the Feast of Christ the King on the last

Sunday of our Church Year. Throughout His ministry,

Jesus avoided the title of King. He commanded the

demons to hold their tongue about His true identity

and He told His disciples to keep their growing

awareness of His real identity secret. Only at the very

end of this life when there could be no misconception

as to the true nature of His kingship does He let His

true identity known. Jesus fits none of our common

notions of kingship. Throughout the ages, monarchs

have come and gone, yet no king has ever captured

hearts like Jesus captured the hearts of men and

women. Never was there another ruler who humbled

himself unto death to save even His disloyal subjects,

let alone those who proved themselves loyal. Just as

Jesus’ love is absolute, so too, is His claim on us. He

is our King, but we must decide whether He will reign

supreme in our lives or not.

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 22, 2015

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS

Saint Rosa Kim, Laywoman and Martyr (+1839)

The Catholic Church began in Korea in 1784 when a

scholar who had encountered the Catholic Faith through

Chinese texts traveled to China for baptism and then

returned to his homeland to share the Gospel with

others. Almost from the first, Christians were seen as

challengers to the social order. Four distinct waves of

persecution rocked the Korean church; around 10,000

men, women and children died professing their

adherence to the Church.

A native of Hanyang, Rosa Kim first learned of the

Church after she had become separated from her

husband and had moved in with Catholic relatives.

After entering the Church herself, Rosa brought other

family members to Christ. She pursued a life of service

and intense prayer. On January 16, 1838, she was

arrested by the authorities. Witnesses saw her being led

from her home and heard her calling Jesus and Mary for

their help.

At Rosa’ trial, the judge brought forward implements of

torture in order to intimidate her. She professed: “I

cannot give up my God. He is the Creator and Father of

all of us. He loves virtue and punishes sin, so how could

I abandon Him? … A long time ago I decided to shed

my blood for these truths. Do as you please.” Her bold

answer earned her torture and the crown of martyrdom,

on July 20, 1839. She was fifty-six years old. Rosa Kim

was canonized with other Korean martyrs in 1984 by

Saint John Paul II. Her feast day is September 20

RITE OF ACCEPTANCE AND WELCOMING

Last week at the 10:00 a.m. Mass we celebrated the Rite

of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, for

Veronica Rains and Joe Manning who will be fully

initiated into the Catholic Faith by receiving the

Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at

the 2016 Easter Vigil. We also celebrated the Rite of

Welcoming for Zachary Bryant who, while baptized,

will complete his initiation into the Catholic Church by

receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist

at the same Easter Vigil. We thank God for the gift they

are to our community. Please pray for them as they

continue their journey of Faith.

FOOD PANTRY

Thank you for your continued, generous donations to

this important parish ministry. The requested items this

week are tuna, Tuna Helper and macaroni & cheese.

The families that we serve appreciate your kindness.

SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMISSION

A sincere THANK YOU to all those who baked for the

West Side Catholic Center luncheon on Tuesday,

November 17, 2015. The 151 hot lunches that we

served consisted of penne pasta with meatballs, salad,

rolls with butter and also included a generous portion

of your fresh baked pastries. All were most

appreciative. Remember to mark your calendar for our

next serving date, Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Thank

you again for your continued support and generosity to

the West Side Catholic Center.

LIGHTHOUSE MEDIA

Please check out the CDs on the Lighthouse media

display in the gathering area. There are many great

topics that will enlighten you and help you to grow in

your love for the Catholic Faith. Our featured selection

this week is: Jesus the Bridegroom: the Greatest Love

Story Ever Told. Dr. Brant Pitre is an enthusiastic and

engaging speaker who regularly lectures throughout the

country. In this stunning talk, Dr. Pitre applies his

knowledge of Jewish roots of Christianity to the very

heart of the Gospel: the love of Christ. You will learn

what it really means to have a “personal relationship”

with Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior, and Bridegroom.
