February 10, 2016 Dear St. Anne Parents, The liturgical season of Lent begins today with Ash Wednesday. Every student and adult here at St. Anne School went to the 8:45 Mass this morning and there we had a cross signed on our foreheads with ashes. These ashes are meant to symbolize our own humanity….we are human; therefore we are born and we will die. Our bodies will either be cremated or decompose in the grave. Wow, doesn’t that sound uplifting?? Because our bodies are human, they are subject to the laws of nature…nothing lasts forever. It is our souls that are NOT human and that brings us to the wonderful reality that when life ends for our physical bodies, our spiritual bodies will continue on living. Life after death is our spiritual Christian reality. Christ came to earth as man, he suffered, died, and resurrected from death to assure us that there is spiritual life AFTER our human death. The ashes help to remind us that our lives can and should be lived out in the best possible manner using Christ’s life on earth as our model. These 40 days of the Lenten season are intended to help us make our lives and the lives of those around us better. What is it that we can do to bring this purpose of Lent into reality? That is the question we should be answering during this holy season of Lent. Our parish is sponsoring several events to support both children and adults in their spiritual growth during Lent. There is a retreat at St. Patricks’s Seminary, a religious book club, soup suppers, and an orchestra/choir to join for those who pray through music. Please see the attached flyers for details. SCHOOL CLOSED – FEBRUARY 15 We will be closed Monday, February 15, in observance of Presidents’ Day. School will resume on Tuesday, February 18. SERVICE RECORD DUE –2/16 It’s time to tally up those completed hours and submit the record on Tuesday, February 16. The deadline for submitting completed hours will be Tuesday, February 23. All records will be returned home with your youngest child on Wednesday, February 24.
BAKE SALE – FEBRUARY 17 Our 3rd grade class will be hosting this month’s Bake Sale on Wednesday, February 17. All baked goods are $.50 or less. Thank you for your participation. LENTEN CALENDARS Lenten calendars are being sent home with the youngest or only child in the family today. Please ask your child for this calendar as it offers suggestions as to what can be done on each of the 40 days during Lent.
SCRIP UPDATE Reminder: the deadline to complete your SCRIP for the 2015-‐2016 school year is April 29, 2016. If you would like to know your balance, email [email protected]. The Lantern was founded by three Presentation Sisters over a decade ago to teach English language and computer skills to immigrant men and women in San Francisco's Mission District. Day care is provided to allow those with young children to attend. Two of the sisters currently working at the Lantern once taught at St. Anne's. They are Sr. Rosann Fraher, a Sister of Mercy, and Sr. Kathleen Healy, a Presentation sister AND one of the founders of the Lantern. Every year we earmark one quarter's Mission Collection for the Lantern Project because the Sisters of the
Presentation are the founders of St. Anne School. PARENT TOUR – FEBRUARY 18 We invite all interested parties to take a tour while school is in session to see our school in action. We need volunteers to help in the Health Room with morning and afternoon shifts Monday – Friday. Each shift is 3 – 3.5 hours. St. Anne’s CEO includes vocals, violins, french horns, clarinets, a psaltery harp, piano & drums, and there’s room for more.
