Born and raised in Oakville, Ontario Nick Monette started cross-country skiing at the age of 5. Nick has been active since childhood, competing in many sports such as speed skating, triathlon, running, soccer, and cycling, but he has always gravitated towards skiing. Even though his home club was a 1.5-hour drive away from his home, he stayed motivated and continued to flourish. Nick competes in all events in the cross-country skiing world, racing anywhere from 1km to 30km races, although he prefers the shorter, more tactical races. Nick not only excels in athletics, but also in academics. Nick graduated from High School last year, and over the course of his 4 years, he found himself on the honour roll every year. He has found a good balance between skiing and school and is now a student at Lakehead University where he is studying Kinesiology part-time while continuing to ski at the National, and eventually International, level. Nick, at the age of 18 this past season, had a very respectable 4th-place finish at the National Championships in Mont Ste. Anne, Quebec. In this race he was also the top 1993 skier proving that he is among the top of his age. Nick has had multiple top-5 finishes at the National Championships including 2009 when he became Canadian Champion in the sprint race. This upcoming year, Nick will be training with the National

Development Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario. With the help of the team’s world-class support, Nick’s ultimate goal for this season is to make the World Junior Championships, being held in Liberec, Czech Republic this year. Nick hopes to obtain sponsor support for this season so that he can achieve his goal of competing for Canada on the International stage.

The planning started in the summer, withNick Monette propelling himself across theasphault on roller skis.

The strategy was formulated the day of therace when Monette and his coach Mark Doblesaw the conditions.

The two came together perfectly, allowingMonette to pull away from his rivals over thefinal 100 metres to win the Canadian juvenilesprint cross-country championship recently inCollingwood.

While the majority of Monette’s rivals wentwith grip wax on their skis, the Oakville skierinstead opted to go with skate skis for the finalrace. The skate skis would not provide grip, butboth skier and coach were confident Monettecould compensate because of his strong doublepoling technique, relying more on upper bodystrength than his legs to propel himself for-ward.

With about 200 metres remaining, Monetteapproached a slope in third. As he came back upthe hill with only a 100-metre flat between him-self and the finish line, Monette and three oth-ers were battling for the lead and Doble knewhis skier was in good shape.

“I just went for it,” the 15-year-old Monettesaid. “I could hear people yelling but I didn’treally know where anyone else was.”

Monette pulled away from the field andcrossed the finish line three seconds ahead ofhis rivals to win the juvenile boys race.

“We made a bit of a tactical decision,” Doblesaid, “but we were only able to do that becausehe was a strong double poler. (At the finish) Iknew the skis were much faster and he wasmuch stronger.”

Ironically, the training Monette had focusedon over the past year — slower-paced workoutslasting three to four hours — were more con-ducive to long-distance events than a two-minute sprint.

“Probably 98 per cent of the training he didwas to prepare him for subsequent years,” whenrace distances would increase, Doble said.

Doble, who has been working with theIroquois Ridge Grade 10 student for the pasttwo years, said it is Monette’s work ethic thatreally sets him apart.

“Within the first few months of workingwith him, it was obvious he would take what Isay and do everything I recommended to be thebest he could. That was the biggest factor, hisdetermination to improve.”

In all, Monette competed in five races in fivedays, including a team event, and placed 12thoverall in the field of 65 competitors. He fin-ished 11th in the short distance, 13th in themedium distance and 27th in the long distance.

But hard work eight months earlier and a bitof strategy made him a national sprint champi-on.

“It was great,” Monette said. “It felt good.”Patrick Monette, Nick’s brother, also com-

peted at the nationals, finishing between 18thand 24th in his four races to place 23rd over-all.

Monette brothers’skiing trail leadsto nationals in B.C.! By Herb GarbuttOAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF

They were introduced to the sport as followers. Now,Patrick and Nick Monette are spending their share oftime at the front of the pack.

The Oakville brothers were introduced to cross-coun-try skiing by their parents, tagging along behind Johnand Joanna Monette on family skiing excursions. Thatstarted them on a trail that has led them to this week-end's national championships at Whistler Olympic Parkin British Columbia.

Both qualified for nationals through a series ofOntario Cup races this season. Patrick, 16, will race inthe junior division while 14-year-old Nick will competein the juvenile division.

It was a pretty simple premise that hooked theMonettes.

“You're going fast,” Patrick said, “but you're going fastby your own means.”

It has been 10 years since the brothers first enrolledin the introductory Jackrabbitprogram that taught them thebasics techniques whileimproving participants’ fit-ness, balance and skills. It was-n't until last year that theybegan taking the competitiveaspect seriously. The brothersjoined Team Harwood, aBarrie-based cross-countryteam that competes on theOntario Cup circuit. It paid immediate dividends.

“Now we know what happens when you train,” Nicksaid. “We can see the difference.”

Coaching has also played a role in improving theirtechnique, helping them add more speed. Since joiningthe Harwood squad, skiing has become a year-roundcommitment. When the snow disappears in the summer,it doesn't mean an end to training. Roller skiing takesover in the summer months, though it still draws someinquisitive looks on local streets.

“You still get a lot of the 'Can't wait for the snow tocome?' comments,” Patrick said.

There's also at least 10 hours of dry-land training, including cardio training — riding and running — aswell as programs to build core strength.

While they admit it’s nice to have different trainingpartners when they train with their Harwood teammatesin the winter, the brothers play an important role inkeeping one another motivated through the summermonths.

“We push each other,” Nick said.“It gets us out there to train every day,” Patrick added. Now the Iroquois Ridge students will have further

motivation as they have a chance to see where they standat the national level.

“We're going to ski with all the good skiers fromacross the country and we'll get to see the Olympicskiers,” Patrick said.

Nick added, “We're still far away (from national teamstatus). You have to be a lot older so it's hard to tell fromhere, but we'll see what else can happen with more train-ing.”

YOUNG NATIONALS: Iroquois Ridge students Patrick (left) and Nick Monette, pictured doing a practice run in a north Oakvilleravine where they train, will compete in the national cross-country skiing championships this weekend in Whistler, B.C.

Iroquois Ridge High School’s starting goaltender wasincorrectly identified in a girls’ hockey story that appeared inSaturday’s edition of The Oakville Beaver.

Emma Revell was the Ridge goalie that blanked Aldershotin Game 2 of the Halton final, then turned aside all shots shefaced in the shootout to lift Ridge to its second regionalchampionship in as many years.

The Beaver regrets the error.

Revell was Ridge’s star netminder

Consolation for Aquinas girls at OFSAA volleyballOvercoming a disappointing first

day, the St. Thomas Aquinas Raidersmanaged to be the best of the rest atlast week’s Ontario Federation ofSchool Athletic Associations (OFSAA)AA girls’ volleyball championships.

The eighth-seeded Raiders, missingtwo of their top players because of aschool trip, lost their first two games atthe tournament in Sudbury and werefacing the prospect of a winless tripwhen they took on Orillia Park St. intheir third match. Aquinas managed topull out a three-set victory, however, and then defeated the third-place fin-ishers in each of the other three poolsto win the consolation championship.

“We knew we were in tough fromthe outset, missing (all-star middleTessa Medlock and setter EmilyQuinn),” said Raiders co-coach PeterSzpakowski. “We knew it would betough to live up to our 24-4 record andNo. 8 seed. But rather than talkingabout who wasn’t here, we focused on

who was.”Aquinas’ starting lineup at OFSAA

featured two Grade 10 students (JessReynolds and Gisela Panza) as well as aGrade 9 setter (Michayla Caughlin). That proved particularly disadvanta-geous against ninth-seededErnesttown, which trotted three fifth-year players and another two Grade 12students onto the court in Aquinas’second game.

A day of OFSAA experience seemedto make a major difference for theyoung Raiders. After defeating Park St.25-21, 12-25, 15-4, Aquinas downedToronto Vaughn Rd. (25-14, 25-19),Guelph Bishop Macdonell (25-23, 25-19) and Woodstock St. Mary’s (25-22,25-21) to claim the consolation title.

“It was like someone flicked aswitch and they started to play togeth-er as a unit,” said Szpakowski, who wasassisted by his brother, Ron. “Winningthe final set (against Park St.) gavethem some much-needed confidence

as they avoided elimination andadvanced to the consolation roundplayoffs.”

Peter Szpakowski credited theinsertion of Grade 10 student MaryQuintieri as a major reason Aquinaswas able to turn the tide, as well as theplay of veterans Jess Pecora, JaimeNeefs and Victoria Miliucci.

Caughlin drew rave reviews fromthe coach in her first OFSAA experi-ence.

“If she continues to work hard andimprove, she will definitely be one ofHalton’s premier players in years tocome,” Szpakowski said of the youngsetter.

With only two starters graduatingthis spring, the Raiders should stand agood chance of returning to OFSAAnext season for the third straight year.

Other members of the team areAlicia Ronda, Danielle Labine, JessiPacheco, Sara Sowinski, Lori Isaj,Taryn McKenna and Alexa Howard.
