The International Development Conference 2014 is the third annual student-organized International Development Conference (IDC) to be hosted at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Last Toronto Scarborough Campus. Last year, the conference successfully drew approximately 200 attendees. The theme for this year’s conference is Unmapped: Re-Imagining the Direction(s) of Development. It aims to explore Development. structures that have directed them, and imagine what future paths development may take within Canada and around the world.

Mission: To provide a powerful and inspiring forum for students, academics, and professionals to engage in critical and meaningful discussions pertaining to the field of international development.

Who We Are: A group of students passionate about International Development and who hope to engage participants in critical dialogue and activities that foster learning and exchanging of ideas to enrich and inspire students’ educational learning and exchanging of ideas to enrich and inspire students’ educational experiences.

UNIVERSITYThis conference provides the university with an opportunity to showcase its recent growth and expansion, as well as the impressive quality of its faculty and student body. Our goal is to attract some of the brightest and most respected minds in development to the conference, and in doing so we hope to build on the university’s reputation as a centre for innovation and academic excellence. Furthermore, by expanding our university’s reputation as a centre for innovation and academic excellence. Many alumni attended the IDS Co-op program’s 25th anniversary three years ago, proving that they hope to remain connected to the university and the program. Through tapping into this erudite and enthusiastic group, this conference will facilitate a reconnection between alumni and the program, and hopefully create a meaningful relationship between the two that will last well into the future. Several alumni of the IDS program will be represented on our advisory board.

Students will gain exposure to a wide range of opinions from both experts and newcomers to the field, giving them a view of the complex nature of development. It will afford students with the chance to learn from individuals who have tangible experience and varying worldviews, something that is invaluable to all students, especially those in the IDS Program.

However, there has seldom been a forum in which our community and program partners have been able to connect simultaneously with each other and the campus, and thus establish a more collective, inclusive, and ultimately more effective relationship. This conference will provide our partners with this much-needed opportunity, and will encourage all stakeholders to connect in new and meaningful ways. Sustainable development is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. However, the needs of the present are currently not being met, due to the majority of developed countries’ neglect of addressing unsustainable, shortsighted actions. It has been shown that climate change has had a disproportionately harsh impact on the change has had a disproportionately harsh impact on the world’s poorest populations, many of whom are extremely dependent on the natural environment for subsistence, and thus vulnerable to the slightest impact on the environment.

Thus, aligning with the mandate to address issues of social justice, the International Development Conference is committed to ensuring environmental sustainability. With the support of the Sustainability Office, at the University of Toronto Scarborough and Sustainability Office, at the University of Toronto Scarborough and the University of Toronto Environmental Resource Network, these efforts will be implemented to ensure the conference operates with both fiscal and environmental responsibility.

Reusable plates and cutlery will be provided to reduce traveled. Our vision for the conference is that attendees will engage in passionate and vibrant discussions with a variety of development professionals. We are targeting the brightest and most dedicated post-secondary and secondary students across Canada and the United States who have a passion for making a positive contribution to the world. In the Greater Toronto Area, high school students go through a rigorous process of selection to attain a spot at this conference. Our goal is to surpass our previous number of 200 attendees to 250 conference. KEYNOTESThere will be three keynote presentations made by professionals and academics who have made significant contributions to the variety of fields within the development sector and are invited to share their experiences, and inspire us with new ideas.

CATALYST CORNERThis will be a space where speakers, delegates, practitioners, and other professional or academic partners can network through the distribution of brochures and pamphlets about their organization. OPEN SPACEAll delegates may propose their own topic of interest for discussion. The person who has proposed the topic will be responsible for leading the discussion.

GALA LUNCHThe gala will commence with a sit down buffet style meal with a Human LibraryLibrary concept. Our speakers, professors, and advisory board members will be dispersed amongst different tables, and delegates will sign up to sit with individual(s) of their choice. An art performance and photography competition will also be present at the Gala to contribute to the multicultural and multidisciplinary aspect of the conference.

SILENT AUCTIONAn opportunity for our in-kind sponsors to get some recognition, while providing funding for conference continuity and for fundraising to support providing funding for conference continuity and for fundraising to support students or organizations. Fifty percent (50%) of the funds raised will be going to a non-profit development organization, and the other fifty percent (50%) will be going to support conference expenses.

QUIET SPACEThroughout the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to visit a room close to conference activities where they can access quiet space. This room will be multi-faith space for prayer and meditation. It can also be a space for decompression and reflection in cases of stress.

Each panel will discuss a sub-theme that marks an important and often controversial issue from many different disciplines, including science, politics, culture, and business, that affect development issues today. The forum provided by each panel provides a valuable opportunity for students to explore subjects that are not always fully developed in class. WORKSHOPSThe goal of workshops is to provide an opportunity to delegates to put theoretical concepts into context, discuss real-life scenarios, and develop skills relevant to development practise.
