welcome

I’d like to welcome you all to the first, of what will hopefully be many SpóirtFests. We have endeavoured to put on as rich and as varied a programme as we could and hopefully there is something for everyone.

The concept behind SpóirtFest is simple, however the ambition is vast. A few short months ago a number of sports people from different Clubs got together and discussed doing something positive for our Town, our Community, our Businesses, our Organisations and our Clubs. We wanted to create an event that we could build on and that Ballincollig could be proud to call its own. We wanted to showcase the many sports and pursuits open to people in the town and beyond, and we wanted to show people how much fun can be derived from getting out and participating. We also wanted of course to develop an event that would help fund our existing and future programmes, which so many children and adults get so much benefit from. And so SpóirtFest was born. And like any child in it first year there will be teething problems, but with age and more time, we will hone and shape this event into one of the premier events in the sporting calendar.

All of us at that meeting were also aware of the huge effort put in by so many people throughout the Clubs and we wanted to honour them by putting in a similar effort in organising SpóirtFest. I take my own inspiration from my father, who though retired works harder than he ever did before, in looking after the grounds in our GAA Club, with his equally dedicated team-mates. He comes home shattered some days, but speaks with such happiness about the hours spent toiling with his comrades, that one can’t help but feel envious. And to the many in the GAA Club and

all the Clubs throughout the town, whose often thankless devotion goes unheralded, we are glad to dedicate this opening festival to you all. And again I feel I have to say it, if we would all exhibit just an ounce of the civic pride the Tidy Towns crew clearly possess, then this town of ours would be held up on such a high pedestal we would see for miles and miles.

Finally I would like to give my appreciation to Noel, Dessie, Shane, Mark, Eamonn, John, Cliff, Kevin, Sarah, Tina, Mike, Richie, Joanne et al on the organising Committee. To the Ballincollig Business Assocation, in particular Tom Doherty, Mary O’Mahony and Michael O’Crualaoi, for their advice and enthusiasm. To Dermot Long and Colin Irwin of Ballincollig Credit Union, Jim O’Leary, Ballincollig Shopping Centre and O’Flynn Construction, and Podsie O’Mahony and PJ each for their sponsorship. To all the businesses that supported us here in the programme and in the Legends Match programme, to the Clubs that came out and supported us by showcasing their great sports. To Tipperary Water, The River Lee Doyles Hotel and Heineken for showing their support, and to the Clubs who have backed us to make a go of this. Without you all we wouldn’t have got this off the ground. And of course a big thanks to my wife Magda and my son John for being so supportive in what has been a hectic time.

This is Ballincolligs event. The possibilities are huge, and its up to us all to make the most of it, so come August 2nd, when SpóirtFest 2011 is behind us, please come and give us a hand to make SpóirtFest 2012 an even greater success.

Thank youJames O’ReillyEvent Organiser

GAA

Ballincollig GAA ClubBallincollig GAA Club was founded in 1886 and this year is proudly celebrating its 125 year anniversary. The club is home to a Senior Football Team , Junior A,B and C Football, Premier Intermediate Hurling, Junior A and B hurling, Senior and Junior Camogie and Ladies football section at the adult level.

At the youths level we cater for teams in every section from Under 11 to Under 18 in the Juvenile section and the fantastically successul academy runs every Sunday morning for 6 to 10 year olds.

Our most prominent current players would have to be Pa Kelly and John Miskella All-Ireland winners with the Cork Senior Foobtall Team, and they have been joined on this years panel by our Goalkeeper, David Lordan, but Ballincollig has a long tradition of supplying players to Cork teams, and the conveyor belt continues this year with Sean Kiely and Luke Prendergast representing the Club at Cork Minor Level.

Over the years Ballincollig has been proudly served by many Committee people, Managers and Selectors, Groundstaff and Support staff, and it is their tireless dedication to maintaining and progressing this fabulous Club, that makes it a great place to be involved in, so please feel free to come and join us.

And indeed, to demonstrate the shared sporting history this proud town enjoys, Ballincollig GAAs current Chairman, Tommy Weste, will feature on the Ballincollig Soccer Legends XI, as he won a Munster Junior Cup with Ballincollig back in the day. Best of luck Tommy.

Best of luck to all the teams in the Club and indeed the town for the remainder of the year, and please keep an eye out for when Ballincollig are in Championship action, as your support is always appreciated and it can make all the difference on the day.

soccer

Ballincollig AFCBallincollig AFC is a soccer club based in a suburb west of Cork city. It was founded in 1974 and has grown from strength to strength since then. It currently fields teams from Academy to Senior Men & Women’s to Over 35s and everything in between

Ballincollig has a proud history and tradition that grows ever longer and more illustrious with each season. Former Ballincollig players have represented their country at senior international level and the highest levels of the professional game. Current Ballincollig members represent their club with pride both on the pitch and off for Cork, Munster & Ireland in both the men and the women’s game.

For players and members it is the green and white of Ballincollig that matters the most. Whatever a player’s level or aspirations there is a place for him or her with Ballincollig. Work on the new pitches is nearly complete and the work and indeed the contributions from so many in the town, to enable us to finish these pitches, is very valued indeed. There is a long and interesting history about our new Senior Pitch, which we have decided to call The Landing Field and we hope it will continue to create history for years to come.

ultimate frisbee

What is Ultimate Frisbee?1. Ultimate Frisbee is a 7-a-side non contact sport for men and women.2. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players.3. No physical contact is allowed between players.4. Players resolve their own disputes, there is no referee.5. Players may not run with the disc. The disc can be moved up the pitch by completing a pass to

a teammate. A turnover happens after an uncompleted pass (drop, block, interception).6. When the offence completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, they score a point.7. The first team to score 15 points wins.

ULtimate FrisBee in CorkCork has a strong reputation in Ultimate Frisbee. It is one of UCC’s premier sports and the college team is one of the strongest in the country. lacrosse

Lacrosse has its origins in a tribal game played by all eastern Woodlands Native Americans and by some Plains Indians tribes in what is now Canada. The game has been modernized extensively by European immigrants to create its current form.Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in North America. There is evidence that a version of lacrosse originated in Mesoamerica or Mexico as early as the 12th century.Traditional lacrosse games were sometimes major events that could last several days. As many as 100 to 1,000 men from opposing villages or tribes would participate. The games were played in open plains located between the two villages, and the goals could range from 500 yards (460m) to several miles apart. The earliest known mention of lacrosse in Ireland is a report on a trip in 1876, the group that travelled consisted of members of the Montreal Lacrosse Club as well as a team of Caughnawaga

Indians. In an effort to re-invigorate enthusiasm for lacrosse in Ireland, the mens teams from the University of Notre Dame and Cornell University travelled to Ireland in 1995 to play games at University College Dublin.Following this, an Irish national mens lacrosse team was formed to compete in the 2001 European Championships tournament. The following year saw the first participation by an Irish national lacrosse team in a world championships at the 2002 World Lacrosse Championships. In 2005 the first club team was established with the creation of Dublin Lacrosse club in 2005, since then there have been three other clubs created in Dublin, one in Galway and one in Belfast. For details see:Website: www.irelandlacrosse.ieContact: [email protected]

In October 2000 the Leeside Lions AFL Club was formed. The club worked hard to recruit players and trained throughout the winter months, playing their first match on 31 March 2001 against the Dublin Demons as part of the ARFLI Super 9’s championship. The game was played at Murphy’s Farm in Curraheen with the Lions coasting to an easy win against a weakened Demons squad. The Lions topped the table in the Super 9’s but faltered when they met the Midland Tigers (another new team, based in Mullingar) in the Grand Final in Drogheda.

Following the Super 9’s competition a 14-a-side Premiership was held, with the Lions again topping the table, this time meeting the Demons in the Final, which was held in Kilkenny. The Demons had a score to settle and beat the Lions convincingly to retain the Premiership flag.

If you fancy trying out an exciting sport with a great social scene then Aussie Rules might be for you. People of every age, skill and fitness level are more than welcome!!

Don’t worry if you’re totally new to the game cause we’ll teach you everything you need to know. Most of our players have never played before but loved it as soon as they got stuck into there first game.

So if you’d like to get your hands on a footy and have a kick, get in contact with us and give it a go. You can either send an email to [email protected] or give one of the coaches a call (085-7895522 or 083-0088003).

Ballincollig Taekwon Do& Little Ninjas SchoolActivity: Little Ninjas- Martial Arts programme for 4-6 year oldsTaekwon Do – Korean Art of Self Defence for children and adultsTaekwon Do Class Monday 5pm-7pm, Wednesday 4pm-8pm, Little Ninjas Class: Tuesday 4pm-6pmWe are primarily a junior club and consequently our emphasis is very much on encouraging children to get involved in martial arts, in particular in Taekwon Do. We start training students at age 4 in the Little Ninja programme which we’ve been teaching for 10 years and as they progress through the programme we teach them the basics of Taekwon Do - kicks, punches and non contact sparring. We are in the unique position of having our own 1800 sq. ft. martial arts hall which is fully equipped with a martial arts floor, mirrors, and a full stock of martial arts equipment. Having a dedicated martial arts facility at our disposal means that we can train in a very safe environment.Students progress to our Junior Taekwon Do Programme where they climb the grades ladder at their own pace to eventual Black Belt. This year we started Taekwon Do classes for adults, and this has been very popular with parents who want to get fit and learn a skill and at the same time be in a position to help their children with their training.Ballincollig Martial Arts Centre, Unit 4A Westpoint Trade Centre, Link Road.Tel: 086 8237813 • www.ballincolligtkd.ie • www.facebook.com/ballincolligtaekwondo
