1.1 President’s Message
Making pipelines safer.
We began the development of the Spectrum XLI system to address the shortcomings
of legacy survey and inspection systems that existed at that time. We essentially
wanted to make pipelines safer by developing better inspection equipment – and that
is exactly what we did.
When it comes to mapping the location and performing above ground inspections
of buried pipelines, there is nothing Spectrum XLI cannot do better than any of the
legacy technologies. Not only did we improve on every mapping and inspection
technique we integrated, but we also designed the system so that they could all
be conducted concurrently, mostly in one pass, resulting in the most efficient and
complete inspection possible.
Not only is Spectrum XLI non-intrusive to the environment, but it has the greatest and
most complete data compilation available.
We are very proud of our product and offer training on the theory, technology and
operation of the Spectrum XLI system. We can’t wait to show you everything this
system has to offer. Best of all, it’s extremely cost- effective: combining surveys means
fewer mobilizations and fewer crews to get the job done – and the analysis and
reporting is both customized and automated so that your results are immediately
available through the easiest to use software in the industry.
Can you really afford not to utilize the most user-friendly, comprehensive system
available on your pipeline? Let us show you how Spectrum XLI is the solution you’re
looking for. Call today and get your inspections working for you.
Best Regards,
Shamus McDonnellPresident

In the year 2000, we began the development the Spectrum XLI system. By 2003 we
had successfully developed and integrated a locating and GPS/ GIS mapping system that
immediately surpassed everything else on the market. The original system also allowed
SONAR to be connected to the system to allow dynamic pipe and cable mapping on fast
moving rivers and deep water crossings.
We didn’t stop there; by 2004 we had an AC coating inspection system that was easier to
use and more reliable than anything the industry had seen before.
In 2005 we added gas leak detection to the system, allowing a single survey to: locate,
map, measure depth of cover, conduct leak detection and a coating survey at the same
time, in one pass over a pipeline. By 2008 we had successfully developed the world’s
most advanced and comprehensive cathodic protection inspection system, and by 2010
we integrated DCVG as well. Since then we have added inertial mapping for locations
where GPS is not available, a laser range finder for mapping distant and non-accessible
features, integrated photography and voice recording into our data collector, and made
numerous other enhancements. Our work has resulted in nearly a dozen patents filed in
numerous countries.
The development didn’t stop there. By 2014 we were able to add several new types
of surveys, such as soil resistivity and environmental assessment. We have continued
testing to develop new ways to take the XLI products to the next level with convenience,
capabilities, and safety.

Utility location is the process of identifying and labeling public utility mains which are
underground. These mains may include lines for telephones, electricity distribution,
natural gas, cable television, fiber optics, traffic lights, street lights, storm drains, water
mains, and wastewater pipes. In some locations, major oil and gas pipelines, national
defense communication lines, mass transit, rail and road tunnels also compete for
space underground.
Location by these means is necessary because maps often lack the pinpoint precision
needed to ensure proper clearance. In older cities, it is especially a problem since maps
may be very inaccurate, or may be missing entirely.
“Call before you dig”, “Digger’s Hotline”, “One-call”, “Miss Utility”, or “Underground
Service Alert” are services that allow construction workers to contact utility companies,
who will then denote where underground utilities are located via color-coding those
locations. As required by law and assigned by the U.S. Federal Communications
Commission (FCC), the 8-1-1 telephone number will soon be used for this purpose
across the United States.
Failure to call such a number ahead of time may result in a fine or even a criminal
charge against the person or company, particularly if such negligence causes a major
utility outage or serious accident, or an evacuation due to a gas leak. Hitting a water
main may also trigger a boil-water advisory and local flooding.

XLI Mouse (Patented technology) is built for the Microsoft®
Windows® Mobile 6.1™ operating system. Field Mouse
displays and stores up to four NMEA compliant data streams
simultaneously allowing GPS, line locator (DOC and Current
Attenuation), sonar, AC and/or DC voltages and other information
to be logged concurrently.
The software also stores each survey along with the pipeline
parameters to allow easy retrieval and review of previously
surveyed data. One unique feature is the equipment status form
which allows the user to view the current status and data stream
from each connected device.
The software can also be configured to give alarms for critical
survey parameters. These include shallow cover being detected
over-the-line being surveyed, as well as other anomaly indicators,
and high error in the GPS calculated position. This helps to ensure
that the survey technician is aware of anomalies on the line or in
the data stream from the survey equipment.

2.3 Raw LogWhen an XLI survey is initiated the XLI Field Mouse software immediately begins recording every
reading from all attached instruments to the SD card, and a continuous waveform from the XLI
Controller integrated volt meters. This raw log can later be opened and evaluated in the XLI Falcon
software, allowing the surveyors path (recorded by GPS), position over the pipeline (recorded from
pipe locator) and all other sensor readings to be reviewed. Where erroneous or suspect readings
are encountered, the raw log can be used to ascertain the source of the error, allowing reliable
discrimination between instrument anomalies and survey anomalies.
The XLI Raw Log Records “One Call” locates, leak surveys & other GIS
inspections step for step, including continuous line locator readings when
using the RIDGID SeekTech™ SR20 or SR60 locators!

Because time is money and because people do make mistakes; The XLI Survey
Controller was built to combine and record survey data directly and simultaneously
from multiple electronic survey instruments to save data acquisition time and increase
data accuracy and reliability.
Simple over- the -line surveys for the purpose of logging right- of- way inventory and
geodetic coordinates can be completed with the XLI system using a single GPS
connection directly to the XLI Data Logger. When advanced survey data is being acquired
from numerous sources, however, the XLI Survey Controller eloquently simplifies the
process. The Survey Controller gives the advantage with an integrated volt meter, power
regulator, multiplexer and data controller with BluetoothTM or serial output to the data
logger. All mapping and inspection modes use the same software and same easy user
interface, with all the same data fields available for logging. The choice is one of purpose
for the user.

4.7 DRM™ - Dead Reckoning Module
XLI Field DRM®# 50180
The XLI DRM® allows the surveyor to continue collecting spatial data when GPS is
temporarily unavailable. The DRM is an inertial mapping unit capable of sub meter
accuracy for up to 45 minutes without GPS correction (ideal conditions).
The Dead Reckoning Module (DRM®) is a miniature, self-contained, electronic
navigation unit that provides the user’s position relative to an initialization point. Dead
reckoning (DR) and GPS data are blended by an internal Kalman filter. When GPS is
available, the DR functions are automatically calibrated continuously. When GPS is
unavailable, dead reckoning takes over. Unlike strapdown inertial systems, the DRM®
error characteristics are independent of time, and depend primarily on distance
traveled. Advanced motion classification algorithms or SmartPedometry™ analyze
movement and compensate when the user is moving backwards, sideways, running,
crawling, or just “fidgeting” in place. An automatic compass orientation algorithm
provides accurate azimuth information when the user is upright or prone. MEMS gyros
compensate for transient magnetic disturbances. A barometric altimeter provides
vertical position accurate enough to identify the floor of a building.

SeekTech™ ST-33Q 5-10 Watt# 25140
Specifications
Revolutionary New Locator making the toughest locates easy.
Distance: Induce over 8 times more current than the competition onto a target line. More current means that you can walk and trace further than ever before. Locate lines deeper then any other inductive transmitter.
Versatility: Induces at 8 kHz and 33 kHz for low distortion locates. In direct connect mode, the SeekTech™ ST-33Q can transmit at any frequency between 10 Hz and 490,000 Hz making the RIDGID SeekTech™ ST-33Q one transmitter that can be used with all receivers.
Speed: More signal equals less retracing of your steps to pick up and move the transmitter. Cut your inductive trace steps in half, by only having to set up the ST-33Q once. In direct connect mode, the LCD display gives instant feedback on current flow and line resistance
Accuracy: Induce more current at lower frequencies. Lower frequencies are less prone to jump onto other lines in congested areas reducing distortion and increasing accuracy.
Confidence: More current on your line means more signal to locate. Combine your experience with the information provided by RIDGID Locators and you have the tools that allow you to work through difficult traces with confidence. .

Buried pipelines are at risk of failures due to corrosion, environmental cracking, third
party damage, and even geotechnical anomalies that can cause expensive and disruptive
interruptions to pipeline operations.
There are a suite of inspection techniques available to the pipeline operator to minimize
these risks and to prevent leaks and failures.
This is an intensive course designed to introduce the theory and application of all the
above ground survey techniques available to inspect buried pipelines.
What do you gain?
A working knowledge of the NACE standard for applying ECDA to a pipeline system.
An understanding of the theory of the indirect inspection techniques including:
Line Locating, Mapping and Depth of Cover
AC Coating Surveys (ACVG and ACCA)
DC Coating Surveys (DCVG and Side Drain)
Cathodic Protection Close Interval Potential Surveys
Leak Detection Surveys
Pipeline Inspection Techniques
We introduce pipelines as a transportation industry, competing with tanker ships, barges,
and trucks. We look then look at the efficiencies gained by operation of pipelines VS the
alternatives. We then look at the safety of pipelines, and what threats we can identify
to pipelines: third party damage (accidental, theft and terrorist), Corrosion, Cracks,
Operational, Geotechnical. This discussion is followed by the means of prevention and
inspection, from the steel mill, through transportation and construction and right into
operation. Once built and operating, we need to conduct ongoing inspections, so we
discuss the in-service pipeline inspection methods and the applicable standards, benefits
and limitations of each: Hydro re-test – pressure testing, ILI – Smart pigging, ECDA 4 Step
Process, Also now ICDA and SCCDA for internal corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
Throughout this discussion, we will describe the application of numerous standards: API
579, API 570, API 1163, ASME B31.4 & B31.8, ASME/ANSI B31.8S, and specifically of NACE
SP0502-2010 for ECDA

ECDA Process
In this discussion we cover the 4 Step Process described in NACE SP0502-2010 - Pipeline
External Corrosion Direct Assessment Methodology: Pre-Assessment, Indirect Inspections,
Direct Examinations, Post Assessment. We then discuss why ECDA is used, which types
of pipelines it can and can’t be used for, and the expected costs of first time and repeat
ECDA inspection programs. The final discussion is a comparison of ECDA versus the more
popular ILI and Pressure Testing inspections, and how different inspections can also be
complementary.
Pipeline Locator Theory & Use
Accurate pipeline location is key to general pipeline operations and especially
critical for above ground surveys. This discussion covers the theory and operation of
electromagnetic pipe and cable locators as well as ground penetrating radar. We then
discuss the limitations and the impact of those limitations on ILI and ECDA inspections.
GPS Theory and Data
Most utilities are now being managed with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which
requires Geodetic Coordinates. Most companies are acquiring and mapping their systems
with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in order to efficiently and accurately map, locate
and reference assets and features. There are dozens of complicating factors that are
normally only understood by surveyors and scientists, and by understanding these the
pipeline integrity professional can more confidently work with this modern technology to
allow efficient collection and access to critical pipeline data.
Pipeline Mapping
Following the discussion on GPS and GIS, the next issue we tackle is how to collect the
data needed in GIS for pipeline integrity purposes. This topic will cover methods of
indexing mapping and integrity data to allow reliable and repeatable use.
76
Coating Survey
Coatings are put on pipelines to protect them from corrosion; they are the first line of
defense against corrosion and environmental cracking. The ILI technique is the most
common inspection used to find corrosion damage and environmental cracking, but
ILI requires that the operator waits for damage to occur to the pipeline, and when that
damage is large enough to exceed the threshold for detection on the ILI tool, it will be
detected and reported – a reactive approach. There have been recent advances made in
the AC and DC coating survey techniques and the most recent technologies bring a new
level of reliability and confidence in the resulting data. We will describe the theory and
technique and technology used for ACVG, DCVG, and ACCA, as well as the expectation for
the results of these inspections.
Cathodic Protection
The second line of defense for a pipeline is the cathodic protection system.
Understanding CP theory and operation are critical to understanding pipeline integrity. In
this discussion we cover the theory and methodologies for applying, maintaining CP on a
pipeline system, and then discuss the inspection of CP to ensure adequate protection on a
pipeline.
Leak Detection Surveys
Despite comprehensive pipeline integrity management plans, sometimes a pipeline
still develops a leak, and locating the leak, or even ensuring no leaks exist can be a
challenging problem. There are reliable and efficient methods of locating methane from
natural gas pipeline leaks, liquid from water and liquid petroleum product leaks. We will
discuss the latest techniques and technologies and how these can be applied to many
pipeline systems.
Outcome of the Master Class
By the end of this intensive two-day Master Class, you will take back to your organization
an impeccable knowledge on how to implement a comprehensive Integrity Management
Program for pipelines, apply ECDA to a pipeline system, determine, assess and mitigate
the major threats of pipeline integrity and thus enhance your pipeline safety and reliability.
The focus will not only be on establishment of a program but also gives the pipeline
owner/engineer/operator indirect inspection techniques such as pipeline mapping,
AC/DC coating surveys, cathodic protection and leak detection surveys. The emphasis
throughout is on practical, ready-to-apply techniques that yield immediate and cost-
effective benefits.Tra
