After selling her Champagne and Lace bridal shop of 28 years this summer, Gerri Charles has since dedicated herself to volunteer projects.
She says that fundraising for breast cancer through the Crystal Gala Foundation is a perfect fit to satisfy her personal passions, as well as her company’s “corporate heart” strategy.
As chair of the foundation, Charles says the committee is constantly dreaming up ideas to make each gala evening better than the last – from new games and entertainment to the menu and decor.
“Ultimately, we want our sponsors, donors and guests to have a fun, elegant, memorable evening that makes them feel good about the contribution they are making in the lives of people
they love and care about,” Charles said.
“Many of our sponsors have become our friends when they joined the Crystal Gala family in 1999, and take great pride in our achievements.”
Last year’s gala raised $130,000, which went towards purchasing a new ultrasound machine that allows 15 additional patient screenings per day.
The funds committed to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC) have outfitted the hospital with two digital mammography machines – one used for breast screening within the Crystal Gala Breast Health Unit and one used for more in-depth diagnostic testing in the medical imaging department.
This year’s Crystal Gala is held on
Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre (36035 North Parallel Rd,).
The theme is “Crystals in Bloom,” and the extravagant evening includes dinner, dancing, entertainment, and live and silent auctions.
This year, the foundation is expected to reach $1 million in fundraising for the ARHCC, and at some point in the evening the next fundraising goal will be announced, at which time Charles assures there will be “much merriment and celebration.”
The overall success of the evening takes year-round planning and is largely based on the efforts of many volunteers. The “Gala Girls” take turns hosting meetings, networking, finding auction items, and perfecting all the fine details in
preparation for the lavish event. “These are special people, selfless and energetic, and the synergy and passion at our meetings is remarkable,” Charles said.
“I also need to interject a little love and appreciation for our husbands, families and businesses that allow us to pursue our passion for Crystal Gala.”
The effort the Crystal Gala Foundation continues to put into the community event year after year is being strongly reciprocated by businesses and individuals alike, and Charles attributes that to their mandate to keep the dollars local.
“From the beginning, the intent of the Crystal Gala was to make a difference for the people of the community we love and care about, and that has only intensified.”

It was a routine day at the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority Unit when Mammography Technologist Mari-Lyn Costello met someone who reminded her why she does what she does. After the encounter with this particular patient, who was later diagnosed with breast cancer, Costello wrote a short story titled “What We Do, and Why We Do It,” that gives a glimpse into the world of screening mammography.
With approximately sixty patients screened per day, five days a week and 30 every second Saturday, Costello explains that the job is sometimes considered by outsiders as “repetitive” and “thankless.” Once the women are imaged, they are informed that they will receive a report in the mail; rarely does a mammographer receive a follow-up.
However, Costello pursued the career because she felt it was much more rewarding than imaging someone’s big toe. “I enjoy the continuous interaction with many different patients, and the feeling that you have made a difference albeit probably a small one, on someone’s perspective about a mammogram,” says Costello.
Having already spent thirty years in her current occupation, Costello has noticed that mortality from breast cancer has declined over the past twenty years. “Many believe it is due to improved screening and treatment, with mammograms as the preferred test to diagnose breast cancer, done by imaging the breasts using x-rays,” explains Costello. “Until recently the only option available was to image the breasts using film, but now digital mammograms are available.” The digital method uses approximately 25% less radiation and the images are easier to store and retrieve.
Costello adds that reducing breast cancer deaths solely hinges on early detection. The patient that Costello would screen and later go on to write about was in her late forties. “She came in for her annual check up and never imagined that anything could be wrong; I was saddened to think that her life would never be the same,” says Costello.
About eighteen months later, Costello and her team noticed that there was a surge in group bookings for mammography testing, which was very unusual, and it was all coming from the same area. It was shortly afterwards that Costello put the pieces together and realized that because her past patient was sharing her story with people she knew, such as neighbours, church goers, and parents from her kids’ school, they felt compelled to get themselves checked. “Some were fine, others were not, but because they had been tested so early, they managed to catch the disease and treat it,” says Costello. “I wondered if my patient knew she had become an unwilling ambassador for breast cancer and had saved many lives just by sharing her story.”
Costello eventually had the chance to meet with her past patient again and told her of her impact; they shed tears, hugs and words of thanks.
“I realized in that moment that what we do matters,” says Costello. “It’s easy to forget this when we are performing our jobs day-in and day-out.”
Although Costello may never see many of her patients again, it is the daily encounters and the moments of strength that continue to remind her that what she does makes a difference.

Wine under $10: The toe points to Sicily

Between the vineswith Kathleen Rake
Italy isn’t known in the B.C. market place for its low-price wines, but this 2012 Nero D’Avola-Cabernet Sauvignon from Sicily fits the bill.
Nero D’Avola is a red grape variety indigenous to Italy. It’s one of the most important wine-making grapes in Sicily and is named after Avola, located on the south part of the island.
RED WINE: Nero D’Avola-Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
PRODUCER: Barone Montalto
COUNTRY: Italy
GRAPE/BLEND: 70% Nero D’Avola, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon
PRICE/ABV: $9.99/14% ABV
THROUGH THE EYES: Moderate intensity, purple.
ON THE NOSE: Classic cassis, black fruit, tobacco, herbal, mineral notes.
ON THE PALATE: Black cherries, dark chocolate, black olive at the finish.
OVERALL: Dark fruit and berries, juicy and some tannic bones. Ted calls it “inoffensive” and I agree.
SERVE IT: This wine is juicy and will pair well with tomato-based, earthy food.
I recommend using a decanter with this wine so you can incorporate a little air and help open it up. I served it with a slow-cooker beef stew and sourdough bread. The tang of the sourdough pulled it all together — really.
BUY IT: Find this Nero D’Avola-Cabernet Sauvignon at B.C. Liquor Stores and drink it now or within the next couple of years.
QPR (QUALITY-PRICE RATIO): Good.
If you’d like to read about a particular wine that rings in at less than $10 (red, white or rosé) please let me know and I’ll find it, taste it and tell you all about it. Send your suggestions to [email protected]. Many thanks to Ted and Joanne Parker of Abbotsford for suggesting this one.

Though cancer may strike even the healthiest people, there are ways to reduce your risk. One way is to consume certain foods. Though precisely how these foods fight cancer remains a mystery, cancer researchers feel they can effectively lower an individual’s cancer risk when combined to form a healthy diet.
BEANS: Beans contain many phytochemicals that researchers feel protect the cells from the type of damage that can ultimately make a person susceptible to cancer. Beans also have been shown to decelerate tumor growth and prevent tumors from releasing potentially harmful substances that can damage nearby cells.
COLOURFUL FRUITS & VEGETABLES: It may seem odd that a food’s colour can have an impact on cancer risk, but colourful fruits and vegetables contain more cancer-fighting nutrients than fruits and vegetables that aren’t as flashy.
GRAPES: Resveratrol, a key ingredient in grapes, may prevent the type of damage that triggers the production of cancerous cells.
FOODS WITH FOLATE: Folate is a B vitamin that can reduce a person’s risk of developing several cancers, including those of the colon, rectum and breast.
For a good dose of folate, try to include eggs, fortified breakfast cereals, orange juice, strawberries and whole wheat toast in your diet.
TOMATOES: Tomatoes have been linked to lowering men’s risk for prostate cancer. Tomatoes have also been linked to lowering a person’s risk for lung and stomach cancers.
WATER: Potential cancer-causing agents in the bladder are diluted when drinking water. In addition, the more water you drink the more frequently you’re likely to urinate, which means cancer-causing agents have less time to come into contact with the lining of your bladder.
Many foods can help individuals in the fight against cancer. Though one food alone may not be potent enough to do the job, when several cancer-fighting foods are included in a person’s diet, the effects may be significant.

Summer’s fresh, bright and tangy colours have given way to the deep jewel tones of fall.
Rich tones of plum, emerald and burgundy add a sophisticated and luxurious touch to the season, breaking away from the classic – but sometimes boring – black and white.
Try punching up a simple silhouette – say, something in a grey or navy hue – with a bold pop of colour via a chunky citron scarf, a fuchsia leather pocketbook or a two-toned boyfriend watch.
Or add a vibrant lightweight-knit sweater or cardigan as a top layer to add interest to an otherwise sedate ensemble.
Elegant jewel tones make for this season’s most dazzling fashions!
All clothing provided by Ronald Allan. Watch (top right) from TimeMaster Jewellers.

Looking good and feeling healthy are top priorities for many women. In addition to spending hours researching the latest beauty regimens and spending thousands on products that promise everything from turning back the hands of time to making hair thicker and more resilient, women could be engaging in a few habits that may be doing more harm than good.
Here are some common beauty faux pas that women likely want to avoid.
Breaking BadBEAUTY HABITS
POPPING PIMPLES: It can be quite difficult to resist popping a pimple, but doing so can cause irritation and spread bacteria, and you may end up getting more blemishes as a result. If you are going to pop a pimple, cleanse the area first, use a warm cloth or steam to help bring the blemish to a head and use tissue-covered fingers to apply gentle pressure. Then clean the area again.
WRAPPING WET HAIR IN A TOWEL TURBAN: Gathering wet locks together and twisting them into a towel is a recipe for damage and breakage. Wet hair is more delicate than dry hair, and it can stretch or break more easily. Gently squeeze hair dry with the towel and then use a detangling spray to help comb out knots.
FAILING TO CLEAN MAKEUP TOOLS: All of those brushes, wands and applicators should be washed at least once a week with a mild cleanser and allowed to air dry. Otherwise, they become harbingers of bacteria and even mold. You can risk infection if you are using a dirty brush near the eyes or nasal passages.

SCRUBBING SKIN: The skin naturally sheds dead cells, so for most people it is unnecessary to use harsh exfoliants or scouring pads to rid the skin of dead cells. In fact, exfoliating the skin too much can cause irritation and excess dryness over time. Try to exfoliate your face and body no more than twice a week. Exfoliating oily skin too frequently can actually cause oil glands to produce more oil.
POOR WASHING HABITS: Some women fall into bed at night without washing makeup from their faces.
Over time this may lead to irritation or blemishes. Surprisingly, too much washing of the face can be just as bad, especially if you are soaping up in the morning as well. You could be stripping your face of helpful oils at the start of the day, when skin needs added protection from the elements. Stick to washing your face at night so it can naturally restore itself while you sleep.
Looking good requires effort, but some beauty habits popular among women might be doing more harm than good.

Early fall is an amazing time of year for foodies. Summer berries are still available and the bounty of fall’s harvest is starting to flow into our markets. There is still enough warmth to the sun to enjoy a cold beer or a glass of wine on your favourite patio and it is quiet enough now that the kids are back at school to truly relax into it.
Apples are a sure sign that the season has arrived. From Braeburns to Gala to Macintosh their time has come. Apples are one of those easily taken-for-granted fruits. They cellar well and are tasty all year round. Unlike the short, flashy season of tender peaches and nectarines, the apple’s time to shine can go all winter.
I appreciate the versatility of the apple in my cooking. Sliced in salads for that extra crispiness, cooked with herbs over pork or with caramel for dessert. One of our more popular items lately at restaurant 62 has been our charcuterie plate with Lepp’s salami, Golden Ears Gouda and Maple Hills Farms chicken confit. For an accoutrement, we prepare an apple butter and jar and freeze it for use all year.
4 HEALTH BENEFITS TO APPLES1. Nutritious
Packing in quite a bit of soluble fiber for a modest amount of calories makes apples a filling, sweet snack.
2. Weight LossApples satisfy hunger for few calories so it’s not surprising that they can be part of a healthy diet that promotes weight loss.
3. Healthy HeartEating an apple a day can lower your risk of death from both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.
4. Exercise BoosterEating an apple before you work out may boost your exercise endurance. Apples deliver an antioxidant called quercetin, which aids endurance by making oxygen more available to the lungs.

Place cored, peeled and sliced apples into a large pot. Juice apples and pour juice on top of sliced apples. Add water, apple cider vinegar and spices. Stir all ingredients together, cover pot and let it cook on low until the apples are soft and the sauce is darkening.
Transfer the mixture into a blender (or use a hand/stick blender) and blend until completely smooth. Push the mixture through a fine sieve to remove any pieces.
Let the apple butter cool and then transfer into storage containers. It should store well in the fridge for about 3 weeks or you could process in canning jars or freeze in small containers.
