WELCOME to the the best little country fair!

On behalf of the Abbots-ford Agrifair Board of Direc-tors and staff, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to WILD, WILD WEST!

Agrifair is a long standing community tradition and we continue to be part of Abbotsfords beautiful fami-ly summer activities. Thank you to the City of Abbots-ford, BC Gaming, our spon-sors and volunteers who help create this four-day event that bridges the gap between urbanites and ruralites. Agrifairs board of directors goal remains the same: to produce an event that surpasses the ex-pectations and satisfies the

diverse interests of the pub-lic with affordable fun for the whole family!

I extend a warm welcome to everyone in our community as well as across the province and country. With all the great shows, concerts and amazing attractions, it will be a great time had by all! Come all four days with our $15 all-week-end wristband, watch Valley Voices on Friday, Dallas Smith on Saturday, Jars of Clay on Sunday and demolition derby on Monday. Be sure not to miss The Mighty Fraser Rodeo (Fri-day, Saturday & Sunday), Lord Strathcona Mounted Troop, the West Coast Lumberjack Show, livestock shows and of course, the famous West Coast Amusement midway.

A big thank you goes out to the City of Abbotsford for its strong and continuous sup-port as well as all of you who attend the fair. Agrifair appre-ciates you and we are look-ing forward to celebrating our 103rd fair with you!

    Ernie Silveri, President, Abbotsford Agrifair

    Presidents message

Abbotsford onlookers will be all ears as chart-top-ping, three-time Grammy award-winning Christian rock band Jars of Clay take the stage under the night sky at the Abbotsford Agrifair on Aug. 4. Bring your family, friends and blanket and find a spot in the stands or on the grass early. This concert is going to draw many!

Inspired by musical artists such as Jimi Hendrix,

The Beatles, Sarah McLachlan, Brent Bourgeois, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Seal, the Jars of Clay sound is a blend of alternative rock, folk, acous-tic and R&B that is enjoyed by both the secular world and Christian community. Lyrics based on the personal beliefs of the band members inspire without being overly laden with Biblical scripture.

This is big for the Agrifair, says Pamela Bren-ner, Agrifair general manager. We expect Agrifair grounds will be packed Sunday evening.

Dont let this worry you. There is an opportu-nity to snag a priority entry to see this highly acclaimed band up close. Just show up at the free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Sunday. One thou-sand priority tickets are set to be dished out to hungry fans!

The generosity of Agrifairs major partners is what ultimately put Jars of Clay on the program.

We are extremely grateful to Columbia Kitch-en Cabinets Ltd. and Fraserway RV for their very generous donation which has made this Jars of Clay concert possible, said Brenner.

Agrifair president, Ernie Silveri, added, Meyers Norris Penny, Clearway Car and Truck Rental, and Praise 106.5 also contributed.

After the pancake breakfast, round the family up and attend church cowboy, cowgirl or little wrangler style with Jack Jackson at his evange-listic cowboy church service.

What does everyone want to see at the fair? Animals, of course! Be sure to spend some time at Agrilane and check out the entertaining shows, educational demon-strations and 4-H competitions.

Rabbit Agility is a must-see on Satur-day, Aug. 3 and Sunday, Aug. 4, as well-trained bunnies hop over appropriately sized obstacles with direction from their enthusiastic handlers.

Its a very popular event, says Sarah Nicholls, agricultural coordinator. Its similar to dog agility. The rabbits go up

ramps, hop over bridges and their han-dlers guide them.

4-H competitions will be underway in the Agrifair arena and Agriland show arena all weekend. Dairy, beef, horses, goats, donkeys, dogs and sheep will be shown and judged in their class (age group and breed).

The Canadian Junior Shorthorn Associ-ation is an organization of young people up to the age of 21 years who are involved in the breeding, raising, care and exhibi-tion of shorthorn beef cattle. Exhibitors

are welcomed for their National Jr. Short-horn Show Friday and Saturday.

The donkey and miniature horse in hand competitions will test the animals ability to maneuver through and over var-ious obstacles. They will encounter bridg-es, tarps (simulated water obstacles) and tippy boards being judged on the animals willingness to go through the obstacles.

Contestants in the hilarious Pig Scram-ble contest will each wear a t-shirt dis-playing a letter of the alphabet. A group of pigs, each displaying matching letters, will be released into the arena. The con-testants must find the pig that matches their letter and try to catch it, and those pigs dont want to be caught! They must be picked up and carried to the centre of the arena. Youngsters aged 10 and under will compete Friday, Saturday and Sun-day, and local celebrities will compete on Monday.

There will be lots of opportunities to learn at Agrilane. See common animal care and farming practices such as the sheep shearing demonstration (once daily), milking demonstrations (four times daily) and the horse shoeing demonstra-tion (twice daily).

Also, watch baby chicks hatch before your eyes inside an incubator in the poul-try barn. You will also see many different varieties of chickens, ducks and geese, as well as a pigeon display. If you are excited to witness eggs turn to chicks, you will also want to check out the different stag-es of growth in the BC Poultry in Motion

Barn located in Agrilane. Other fun entertainment includes the

Country Horse Classic in the Agrifair arena daily which includes the presti-gious Six Horse Hitch as well as other en-tertaining races and shows. Feel the earth rumble as teams of massive and majestic Clydsdale and Belgian draft horses stomp into the arena pulling large, heavy wag-ons. Teams will be judged on their horses, harness, wagon, driver, performance and overall eye appeal. Patrons can also ex-pect to see Friesian horses, the beautiful and graceful draft horses. There will also be an open horse show, including En-glish, western driving and even costume classes.

Have you ever heard of Campfire or Wheelbarrow races? If you have, youll know how entertaining they are, and if you havent, you need to come and see for yourself. In the Campfire Race, two heats of two riders on horses will book it from one end of the arena to the other. Then they must jump off their steed, take all the tack off and scramble into a sleeping bag. Whoever is the quickest is the winner!

The Wheelbarrow Races are like chariot races, but instead of a chariot, horses will pull a one-wheeled wheelbarrow carry-ing a cowgirl holding the reins. They will race around the arena, and the first team across the finish line wins!

There is lots to see and lots to do at Agrilane, so be sure to stop by and spend some time.

JJ Harrison, this years rodeo clown, is one of the worlds best, and was recently the official clown of the Wrangler Nation-al Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada.

You will not want to miss the hilarious entertainment and promise of high-ener-gy rodeo events, so be sure to find a seat in the grandstand early.

Originally a public school teacher at Walla Walla in Washington State, this clown with a Masters degree is a kid mag-net and a popular performer at many top rodeos. Come out with your kids, enjoy lots of laughs and cheer on your favourite cowboys and cowgirls. Whether youre an old hat or trying out a new pair of cowboy boots, youre bound to have fun.

No rodeo would be complete without an enthusiastic, entertaining and pro-fessional rodeo announcer, and this year Agrifair is excited to bring on former professional cowboy, Al Parsons. With his extensive rodeo experience, knowledge of the sport and humour, Parsons will bring crowds to their feet.

This years Mighty Fraser Pro Rodeo promises to be entertaining and exciting as gutsy cowboys fight to stay atop a raging bull or bucking bronc for eight sec-onds in the bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding events, and as fearless cowgirls race their steeds in a cloverleaf

pattern around barrels at top speed in the barrel racing competition. You will also see team roping, steer wrestling and calf roping.

This is a dual sanctioned event, says Don Curtis, Mighty Fraser Rodeo commit-tee chair. This means patrons can expect to see top professional cowboys and cow-girls from all over Canada and the United States competing for fast times, big scores and good prize money.

Weve got the coolest show planned for Saturday, said Curtis. An undisclosed, crowd wowing show is scheduled to take place during the rodeo and youre not going to want to miss it! The only hint given is it will have something to do with Services on Safety and the police, fire and military.

Youve undoubtedly heard about the terrible flooding in High River, Alberta. People at Phantom Screens wanted to do their bit in helping to raise money for the folks who are cleaning up after the floods and trying to get back to normal.

Thats why they have teamed up with Graham Wardle, star of CBCs Heartland, to raise money for High River.

Graham has kindly agreed to appear at the Abbotsford Agrifair to help generate much needed funds for the community. All proceeds will be deposited to the High

    River Relief Fund (http://www.highriver.ca/index.php/en/publicforums/news-fo-rum/news-flash/427-town-sets-up-emer-gency-relief-fund).

So, if youd like to meet Wardle, have your picture taken with him or get his autograph, then make sure youre at the Agrifair on Saturday Aug. 3. Wardle will be there to meet all his fans from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the 4-H barn, and then again from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the entrance to the rodeo. And dont forget to bring some cash to contribute to the

cause. You can find out details about the Agri-

fair www.agrifair.ca and read about Phan-tom Screens commitment to community involvement http://wp.me/p2OIz9-2y.

Rodeo seating, thanks to the generosity of Phantom Screens, is included in the price of gate admission - $12/day adults, $10/day students or seniors or get your four-day weekend pass for only $15 per person and come every day. 10 and under are free. Parking is $5/day.

Abbotsford will be rockin country-style at the Agrifair on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 3, with Langley-born rocker-turned-country Dallas Smith. Agrifair grounds will be brim-ming with onlookers as this Juno-nominated country singer-songwriter takes the stage at 9:30 p.m.

Dallas Smith is new to the country scene, but no stranger to success in the music busi-ness. Formerly the lead vocalist of alternative rock band Default, Smith released four al-bums, selling over a million copies. Success has stuck with Smith as he jumped right in to the country music scene. The natural twang in his voice made an easy transition from alter-native rock to country.

I am having the time of my life to be hon-est, says Smith, as he describes how blessed

he feels having made the transition. The support from the country community

has been mind-blowing. Also, Im in the driv-ers seat with this project and that helps me create a good balance in my life.

When asked how he feels about performing locally at Agrifair, Smith says, Its great to be able to see so many familiar faces. Its not very often I can get all my friends and family together in one place.

Dallas has teamed up with Rodney Clawson, a Grammy-nominated songwriter, and Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood) to create a new album which is expected to be released in early 2014.

With this record I tried to put together a collection of the best songs I could get my hands on. There are some outside songs from writers I am a huge fan of and also co-writes I had with them. The Nashville style of writing was very foreign to me compared to my past. With Default it would just be the guys and I hanging out and hopefully wed have ideas. With this record I was sitting down with guys who do this as a nine-to-five job. It is quite different from what I was used to.

Eager fans may have an opportunity to hear material from the new album Saturday eve-ning.

We actually might be trying out one or two new songs. I am excited for that as well. I love watching the reaction of fans to new material. Crowds dont lie, said Smith.

His latest single, Nothing But Summer, re-leased just in time for a promising summer, is all about enjoying carefree summer days and evenings. Come out to Abbotsford Agrifair to do just that! Enjoy a full carefree summer day, snag your spot in the beer gardens early and kick back for a rockin country-style summer evening.

Opening for Smith will be the winner of Fridays Valley Voices competition. The new-found star will perform three or four songs starting at approximately 7:30 p.m., followed by The Johnson Brothers. Raised in Maple Ridge, The Johnson Brothers (Brett and Trent) have proven to be one of the hardest working bands in the province. Born the grandsons of CCMA Hall of Fame member, Elmer Tippe, and nephews to CCMA and BCCMA award-win-ner Rick Tippe, the brothers were destined to tackle the country music industry. Their passion for music and high-energy stage show have caught the attention of music lovers and helped set the brothers apart from other acts in the province.

Witness an important part of Ca-nadian history and enjoy a colourful, musical and active display of eques-trian skill and military tradition by the Strathcona Mounted Troop.

Comprised of 20 horses and 25 Royal Canadian soldiers dressed in period uniform, the troops will per-form a 35-minute musical ride, in-cluding a tent-pegging demonstra-tion, each day throughout the long weekend to commemorate their na-tional military heritage and cavalry traditions. They will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Thun-derbowl and on Monday in the Agri-fair Arena.

The Strathcona Mounted Troop, originally formed by Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona and Mounted Royal) in the year 1900 during the wild, wild west era, was a regiment of cavalry consisting of Canadian cow-boys and frontiersmen as well as members of the North West Mounted Police.

This regiment of cowboys and fron-tiersmen fought bravely on horse-back in several small and bloody battles throughout the South Afri-can Boer War, with many members

hired as scouts due to their back-ground. As the Second World War approached in 1939, the Strathco-na Mounted Troop were disbanded and replaced by heavy armoured cavalry.

In order to preserve its histo-ry and keep tradition alive, the current ceremonial Strathcona Mounted Troop (formed in 1977) perform at various fairs and rodeos throughout the country each year.

Twenty-five soldiers proudly vol-unteer their time for up to two years, caring for their mounts and equipment as well as taking part in training and cavalry drills. During this time they must also carry out active military duties.

Horse maintenance, uniforms and equipment are paid for through the Strathcona Mounted Troop Foundation which relies on the generous donations and hon-orariums received by its members, service clubs, private individuals, as well as cities and other organi-zations.

Dont miss your opportunity to observe this historical event and help keep our living history alive.

What cuts steel like a hot knife through butter? Its a tool that res-cue services would not be without when it comes to saving lives. Its called the Jaws of Life, and Agrifair patrons will have an opportunity to witness live on Saturday, Aug. 3 just how this amazing tool works. Not only that, but the Services on Safety show is jammed-packed with all sorts of engaging demonstrations for the family to see.

The Services on Safety show is big this year, said Melanie Kish, Agri-fair office manager. We have the Jaws of Life coming in, the Roll-Over Simulator and also a Teddy Bear Hospital. Patrons can also expect to meet Jamie Davis Motor Truck Heavy Recovery & Rescue from the popular A&E series, Highway Thru Hell.

A Jaws of Life extrication demon-stration, coordinated with Abbots-ford Fire Rescue, will be held at 2 p.m. Aug.3. They will use the tool to cut a car apart and free a live volunteer. The patient will be care-fully removed from the wreck and secured onto a stretcher as in a re-al-life situation.

Bring your family and watch as the Roll-Over Simulator demonstrates just what can happen to vehicle oc-cupants who are not wearing seat-belts. This demonstration, hosted

by The Fraser Valley Integrated Road Safety Unit, a unit comprised of the Abbotsford Police Department, Delta Police Department and RCMP members, provides both real-time compelling evidence of the securi-ty provided by seatbelts as well as the devastating consequences vehi-cle occupants are subjected to after being ejected from a vehicle during a roll-over crash.

The simulator is the front end of a car mounted on a trailer that spins around on a vertical axis. During the demonstration crash dummies representing vehicle occupants will be placed inside in both belted and unbelted scenarios. The vehicle will simulate what happens at speeds of 30 to 50 kilometres per hour during a roll-over crash.

Patrons will have an opportuni-ty to practice their own CPR skills during the CPR demonstration. There will be other static displays to check out as well.

Children, dont forget to bring your favourite teddy bear or stuffy that needs first aid treatment! Nurs-es and doctors will be standing by at the Teddy Bear Hospital to take good care of your special friend. Also, there will be a special 911 kids phone to practice just what to say to the during an emergency situation.

Chef Dez, a certified Red Seal chef, is pas-sionate about food and will be cooking up a storm with another fun, informative and high-energy series of 15 mouth-watering cooking shows over the long weekend.

Three of the recipes are even gluten-free

and diabetic friendly, says Chef Dez, who is also a national food columnist and a culinary Instructor at five locations across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, including Lepp Farm Market here in Abbotsford.

This is Chef Dezs 10th year at Agrifair. His passion for people and food makes his shows entertaining, enjoyable and educational.

Chef Dez will be putting on four shows daily Friday, Saturday and Sunday and three shows on Monday. Make sure you stop by and see whats cookin! Look for him on the upper level between the Tradeshow building and Pioneer Corner.

Learn to cook Wild, Wild West style

  • Grab a corn dog, a plate of deep fried pickles or those mini donuts and snag a seat in the stands before theyre gone. Whos returning to Abbots-fords Agrifair? They are the peoples favourites: The West Coast Lumberjack Show and the Dem-olition Derby.

The lumberjack show, featuring big, brawny lumberjacks facing off against each other in tests of strength, speed, accuracy, balance, and skill, represents the thrilling and dangerous forest in-dustry in British Columbia. Roaring crowds cheer on the lumberjacks as they battle each other through a gauntlet of climbing, sawing, chopping and balancing matches.

We are awesome, affirms Darren Dean, owner of the West Coast Lumberjack Show. Returning to Agrifair after three seasons away, Darren has planned an action-packed, 45-minute ex-travaganza to be showcased three times a day throughout the Agrifair long weekend.

Our lumberjacks were featured on Canadas Got Talent and Bachelor Canada last year, re-marked Dean. They also appeared in The Amaz-ing Race Australia.

Its been six years since the demolition derby unleashed its automotive carnage on Agrifair grounds and due to popular demand they are back for more car-on-car combat to thrill crowds once again!

This is a live-action family event that people of all ages like to come and see, said Ross Ed-wards, a 45-year-plus veteran of the derby.

Spectators cheer on their favourite car and see how long it can last.

This year the derby, a full-contact motor sport, has something special planned.

Were bringing out mini-vans to the death! announced Ross. There will be half a dozen mini-vans stripped out for a figure-eight race.

Whether driving forward, backwards or side-ways, contestants must out-drive and out-ma-noeuvre one another to win this race.

The demolition derby, sponsored by Playtime Chances Abbotsford Casino, is scheduled to roar into action on Aug. 5 for an adrenaline-pumping hour of excitement, and the West Coast Lumber-jacks face off daily throughout the long weekend. They are family-friendly, action-packed shows popular among people of all ages.

Fireworks are back Friday night at 10:15 p.m. for a dazzling display you wont want to miss. It has been three years since they last lit up the night sky at Agrifair, and due to popular demand they are back for another year.

There are ribbons to be won and prizes to be had at the Pioneer Corner as the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull com-petition gets underway twice daily throughout the long weekend. It isnt horsing around that will win your kids a prize or ribbon, but they will have to generate as much horsepower as they can to win against their rival competition.

Two heats will compete against each other daily. Contestants will have to use raw muscle strength to drive a pedal tractor down a track while at the same time pulling a weight transfer sled upon which es-calated weight will be added. Who-ever can pull the sled the farthest is the winner!

Be sure to check out the big trac-tors. The Fraser Valley Antique Farm Machinery Association will be ex-hibiting restored heritage tractors as well as antique household items. See a 1930s antique diesel-powered saw mill in action as it cuts raw logs into boards the old-fashioned way. You will also see some antique gasoline engines.

Have you ever gazed down the dairy aisle of your local grocery store and

wondered just how skim milk, 2% milk or your coffee cream was pro-duced? Or have you ever wondered what went into making a rope? Or how grain was separated from the stock and husks of wheat grass? Well, heres your chance to find out. Cream separating, rope-making and thrash-ing machine demonstrations will be shown twice daily. This is a great edu-cational and eye-opening experience for those of us who simply head over to the local convenience or hardware store to buy what we need.

Back in 1889, Abbotsford began as a small farming community and now has grown to produce over 70 per cent of B.C.s dairy, berries, vegetables, poultry, eggs, pork, greenhouse veg-etables, mushrooms, floriculture and nursery products. Agriculture was what gave Abbotsford its kick-start and it continues to be a big business that keeps Abbotsford flourishing.

Pioneer Corner will take you back in time to when good old-fashioned farming techniques and machinery helped deliver and sustain agricul-ture in our city. Be sure to check it out.

A sing-off to a professional live band will set the stage as five celebrity judges crown this years winner of the Valley Voices Vocal Competition at the Abbotsford Agri-fair on the evening of Friday, Aug. 2.

The winner of this competition will be a star for a year, said Darcy D, co-founder of the Valley Voices Vocal Competition (VVVC), which has helped facilitate the de-velopment of numerous music careers.

The grand prize winner will receive voice sessions with world famous voice coaches such as Dave Stroud (Natasha Beddingfield, Cee Lo Green and Adam Lambert) and Raab Stevenson (Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Kelly Rowland).

Young amateur voice talent from all over B.C. have been busy honing their vocal techniques in hopes of becoming one of 15 finalists in the Valley Voice Vocal Competition and ultimately being crowned the Valley Voice of 2013. Fifteen finalists have been selected from two categories, junior (seven to 12 years) and senior (13 to 18 years).

All finalists are showcased on Facebook where fans can view video performances and cast their vote by Lik-ing their favourite artist.

Contestants will gather Likes which will become part of the voting statistics, explained Darcy. The live audi-ence (at Agrifair on Aug. 2) can also vote. All of the votes will be added to the panel votes.

This will be the fifth season Valley Voices has enter-tained at Agrifair.

The entertainment and showcase of talent Valley

Voices brings to our communitys fair is absolutely amaz-ing! We are looking forward to another great year, said Ernie Silveri, Agrifair president.

The 15 aspiring finalists will contend for the title of Valley Voice 2013 throughout the day Aug. 2 beginning at 11 a.m. on Agrifairs community stage until the top three finalists from each category are selected at 6:30 p.m.

A special performance by last years winner, Bailey Alexis, will kick off the final show at 8:30 p.m. on the concert stage where the remaining contenders will sing off to a live band to win their category. Out of these only one will be crowned 2013s Valley Voice. The winner will be announced at 10:15 p.m.

The five celebrity judges include Kenny Jones of SONiC Nation; Troy Samson, producer of Snoop Dog and Canadi-an Idol; Tara Lett, co-founder and creative director of AMP Records, The Future Label; Phil Lehmann, co- founder of AMP Records, The Future Label and sought-after song-writer, producer, and mixer; and Kylee Epp, country pop artist, nominated for four BCCMA awards in 2012.

    Celebrity judges seek Valley Voice

Over 20 mens and womens teams in three divisions will compete in the Abbotsford Kukri Sevens Abbots-ford Rugby Club tournament on Saturday, Aug. 3 at Exhibition Park.

This year the annual tournament is ecstatic to pig-gyback on the crowds attracted annually by Abbots-fords renowned Agrifair, drawing a new audience to the fair and sport alike.

If you havent heard the terms ruck, maul, scrum or lineout, here is your chance to find out what its all about. Rugby Sevens, a fast-paced game played around the world, debuts in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Dating back to the 1800s, Sevens is adapted from the original Fifteens format (15 players on the field). Although only being accepted by the IOC in 2009, Rugby Sevens is already one of the worlds fastest growing sports, simply because it is one of the fastest sports in the world. The real appeal is that it is spectator-friendly, demanding no prior knowledge of the sport to feel the sheer excitement and gratification a 15-minute game can provide. This format gives new spectators and seasoned professionals a chance to appreciate different teams, divisions and skill levels, in a one-day, action-packed tournament.

The tournament will be great entertainment, said Anthony Hirschman, tournament coordinator. It will be good for both kids and adults.

Sports fanatics and curious on-lookers should be sure to come out and enjoy the sun and festivities. Cheer teams on from the beer garden or observe from the sidelines for a high-speed, thrilling and totally en-tertaining display of athleticism.

Three matches will be scheduled simultaneously at various times throughout the day Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. until approximately 6 p.m.

    Rugby teams battle it out
