Dog wash leads to new wine experienceWe have a poodle puppy name Leilani and she led us to a new wine store in Abbotsford.

Well, not directly.

We headed for Sumas Mountain Village in Abbotsford to check out the Bosley’s Pet Food Plus dog-washing stations we’d heard about from the breeder and discovered Sumas Mountain Wines, a B.C. VQA wine store, just a couple of doors away.

VQA – Vintners Quality Alliance – is the designation used in B.C. to indicate that what you read on the label is what you get in the bottle. In other words, BC VQA assures you the grape is what it claims and the B.C. region is, too. You are guaranteed wines that are B.C. grown and produced and meet a certain standard. However, it isn’t a guarantee you’ll like the wine.

And, it’s important to note there are several B.C. wineries that produce

excellent all-B.C. wines but choose to not participate in the BC VQA program.

We took part in Sumas Mountain Wines’ complimentary Saturday-afternoon wine tasting and sipped four from Wild Goose Vineyards in the Okanagan: Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Riesling. Of the four, I preferred the whites, especially the Riesling ($17/12% ABV). So I took home two bottles.

Riesling is one of the most food-friendly and versatile wines. This Wild Goose example was juicy, refreshing and packed with the aromas and fl avours of stone fruit, apples and citrus. In addition, I found a pleasing minerality on the nose and the proverbial Riesling petrol, which was a little more pronounced than I expected in such a young wine.

Serve this wine with almost anything, from spicy Asian fare to eggs Benedict, and enjoy.

Stress is when the tasks are many, the bills are plenty and the kids aren’t ready to go. In order to cope with all the demands of daily life, it’s important to fi nd “you time” amongst all the chaos.

“We all need to take take time for ourselves and recharge our batteries. Whether a busy mom, business owner, teacher, or athlete the focus is often on helping others and not ourselves.” says director of the Wild Orange spa, Tyra Crump.

She has been in the spa industry for more than 20 years and says the most common reasons people seek a massage are relaxation, stress reduction and pain relief.

“Taking care of your body is a vital necessity with today’s busy lifestyles,” explains Tyra. “Massage therapy relieves stress and can also enhance immune functions which in turn reduces illness and injury.

“Our goal in this industry is that guests leave relaxed and rejuvenated after a visit to the spa.

“There is so much more awareness now on how massage benefi ts us on the emotional, mental, and physical levels, which for injuries is a huge part of the overall recovery process.”

Melissa Demaresq was formally a Certifi ed Massage Practitioner for six years, and is now on the Wild Orange Spa team as a Registered Massage Therapist.

“I enjoy making people feel relaxed,” Demaresq says simply, “and I like to treat their therapeutic needs in a calm and relaxed environment.”

When asked about the benefi ts of massage, Demaresq lists: “increased circulation and metabolism, reduces anxiety and depression, reduces headaches and migraines, reduces stress levels and pain, helps with the respiratory system, and helps through pregnancy, just to name a few…”

SMALL BUSINESSMARKETPLACE 2013

Fifty years ago, Neil Klassen saw a need and fi lled it. He began hauling sawdust out of local mills and supplying the local farmers with bedding for animals. Without realizing it, he was building the foundation for what would grow into a very successful Abbotsford family business.

Valley Pulp and Sawdust Carriers Ltd. is now a thriving company. In addition to various agricultural supplies, the company provides landscaping and hauling solutions. It has gone from Mr. Klassen’s one truck to a fl eet of 20, with over 40 employees, 14 of whom are family members. Mr. Klassen, now 84, is thrilled to see the third generation of Klassens take over as owners.

This generation is determined keep their grandfather’s values front and centre as they advance into the future.

“Our grandpa taught us to always give back to our community,” third generation owner Erin Klassen-Parkes explains. “So we are following an important heritage that was instilled in us growing up by becoming sponsors

of Envision Financial’s Run for Water. We are very happy with the great sense of community this event has enamored Abbotsford with.”

Over the last few years, the Envision Financial Run for Water has grown very special to the company and the Klassen family. In the 2012 event, 37 members from their family participated.

“We would like to challenge other families or family businesses to beat our enrollment at Run for Water 2013 on May 26, and to consider being a sponsor or donating charitably to HOPE international,” Klassen-Parkes continues. “It is a great community event that doesn’t exclude anyone, great for the whole family and has a purpose of getting clean water to those who don’t have access to it. We love that they have a curriculum for the schools to get involved in. There really isn’t a reason not to sponsor Run for Water.”

If you would like to take the challenge or learn more about Run for Water, please visit the website at www.runforwater.ca.

Local Family Company Gives Back by Michelle

myfood

Canadian winters are tough on vegetable lovers.

The produce aisles are still stacked with decent-looking food but the fl avours and textures just aren’t right. There are several vegetables that cellar well, are still local, and plentiful this time of year. The key is always choosing a good quality item that is appropriate for the time of year, and to handle it simply. Try roasting vegetables instead of boiling to maximize the natural sweetness.

Jerusalem artichokes

Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes) are so prolifi c gardeners are

hesitant to plant them. The plants grow into 6’ tall sunfl ower-like plants with large tubers under the ground. The roots (that you eat) have a beautiful nuttiness and buttery richness. You can leave the root in the ground for the winter and dig it up as you require or wash it well and store in the fridge. Make sure to use a sealed plastic bag and squeeze out all excess air or the chokes will soften and brown.

Caulifl ower

Another vegetable that can be sourced locally, is inexpensive and has great nutritional benefi ts is caulifl ower. Baking a large head broken into fl orets in the oven until the natural sugars brown on the outside, then pureeing

with cream and horseradish, sea salt and Dijon mustard is a simple way to make a delicious accompaniment for bacon-wrapped pork dishes.

Onions

Onions are extremely versatile in the kitchen. Bursting with sweetness once caramelized. If you are cellaring your onions, be sure not to store them in the same place as your potatoes. Onions emit a gas that causes potatoes to rot quickly.

Give your vegetables the same amount of thought and care as you do for the rest of your meal. Even this time of year, in this climate, you can fi nd wonderful, local options to satisfy even the most refi ned palate.

Beets should last in the fridge or cellar until very early spring. Even if their skins are loose and a little sad looking, if boiled before peeling, their fl avour is as nice as it was in the summer. Our recipe for cooking beets is simple:

• 3 lbs local beets in a large pot covered with an inch more of cold water

• 1 cup of sugar • ¼ cup of salt • 1 tsp each of: coriander, fennel, bay leaves

black peppercorns, star anise, mustard seeds and a cinnamon stick

• ½ cup red wine vinegar

Combine all together and bring to a slow boil. Cook until beets are cooked through, but not mushy.Remove from the heat and allow the beets to cool, peel, chop as desired. Strain and pour the cooking liquid over the beets to lengthen the storage time.

A splash of tangerine, anyone? How about a touch of apricot?

Shades of orange are bringing a bright, fun spirit to the spring fashion scene.

Orange can add zing to any out t, but it's not a colour you want to get wrong. You know what they say about too much of a good thing.

Orange looks great when paired in small amounts with neutral tones such as navy, olive and champagne. A classy cardigan or a top that includes a few orange stripes does just the trick.

Not everyone can wear orange close to their face, though, so considering investing in a patent tote bag or a cute pair of ballet ats to add a pop of colour to any out t.

Challenge updateFour weeks have passed since the January 7 start date of the Total Makeover Challenge, sponsored by The Abbotsford News and Go Fusion Fitness, and what amazing results the ladies are seeing! More far reaching than just the physical changes are the mental changes; the ladies are experiencing a real sense of joy and positivity, a feeling of accomplishment and personal growth.

One such contestant is Kimberley Thompson. Her motivation came from a need to balance her mentally demanding job as the coordinator of Bereavement Services at Mission Hospice. It started with a commitment to re-structuring her life to include gym time at least four days a week. What keeps Kimberley on track are the results, not just the decreasing numbers, but the new shape that her body is taking and the increase is her personal happiness.

Another contestant enjoying the challenge is Tina Richardson. Tina wanted to boost her energy in order to balance her busy schedule and carve out some sorely missed “me” time. She is excited about weigh-ins and stresses that this is due wholly to the enthusiasm and support from the Go Fusion Fitness staff.

Laura Carver was a 2012 contestant who realized she wasn’t where she wanted to be yet, physically and mentally. She fi nds the group support and accountability of the Total Makeover Challenge ideal for achieving results. Already, she has lost over ten inches! Laura has two daughters that are her motivation. She wants to be seen as a woman who is secure in her strong body and mind.

We will continue to follow these amazing ladies on their journey of self-discovery. Stay tuned for further updates and celebrations of success.

Washed Up?When purchasing a home, buyers often look at the kitchen space and how many bedrooms there are, while largely ignoring other rooms, including the laundry room. Oftentimes, the washer and dryer are relegated to a dark corner of the basement or garage, and homeowners simply accept their laundry lot.

Homeowners and renters need not feel they have to hide laundry rooms like they did in the past. Having the laundry nearby the family action -- and paying attention to laundry room design -- can make the work of keeping clothes tidy that much easier.

Many designers would agree that you don’t have to sacrifi ce style for function. As with any other area of the house, impart design elements into the room and make it a room in which you want to spend time.

• Consider cabinetry in your laundry space. They can hide cleaning products, detergent, dryer sheets and so much more.

• Adding a television or stereo to the room, will you entertained while ironing or folding clothes.

• A laundry area also can be much more than just a place to wash and fold clothes. Many people like to turn this spot into a multipurpose zone. A large countertop normally used to fold clothes can also double as a gift-wrapping station. Think about merging a laundry room with a craft room.

• Raising hamper bins off of the fl oor to be suspended from a rod above the washer frees up valuable fl oor space.

• You don’t have to spend a fortune on a laundry room re-do. Shop in salvage stores or antique shops for custom pieces to add character.

Although a laundry room is often an afterthought, taking time to organize and plan the space can make it both functional and inviting.

Don't sacrifice

style for function

Homeowners planning a kitchen remodel are no doubt considering whether to include a kitchen island in the new design. When the space allows, an island can be a fine way to enhance the look of a kitchen and impart an upscale appeal.

Although there are many benefits to an island in the kitchen, there are also some disadvantages to kitchen islands. Weighing all the options can help homeowners design a kitchen layout that is functional, affordable and practical for the space they have.

Pros Many times islands are built with cabinetry that matches the rest of the kitchen design, and those cabinets provide storage space for pots, pans

and other kitchen tools. Islands may double the storage space available in the kitchen.

Kitchen counter space can be easily gobbled up by toaster ovens, microwaves, coffee makers, and various other countertop appliances. These appliances can take up valuable real estate that’s sorely missed when preparing meals. An island can be used solely for cooking and preparation, and some homeowners have incorporated cutting boards and a prep sink into the design of the island.

Islands also can be customized according to a homeowner’s needs. Instead of simply having cabinetry beneath the counter, some opt to have a wine cooler or even a bookshelf for keeping cookbooks within reach. An

additional small dishwasher or beverage refrigerator may be tucked into the design. For others, the island may be a makeshift office space.

Cons Expense is a leading negative factor with regard to a kitchen island. The additional material necessary and the labor involved in installation may bust some homeowners’ budgets. Stationary islands can cost several thousand dollars to install.

In smaller kitchens, an island may be impractical because of the space limitation. Islands are typically at the heart of the kitchen and may interfere with walking space or cause clearance issues when the refrigerator door or cabinet doors are open. For homeowners

who find space is at a premium in the kitchen, an island may not be the best idea. However, a rolling island that can be moved into position when needed, then stored in a convenient, out-of-the-way location might be a viable option.

Depending on the complexity of a kitchen island, its installation may extend the amount of time required to complete the kitchen renovation. This can prolong the length of time needed to complete the work. Running a gas or electric line and plumbing to the island may require a major overhaul.

Kitchen islands are popular components of home designs. Before homeowners engage in any kitchen renovation that may include the incorporation of an island, they should know the advantages and disadvantages.
