Each year Southampton is home to festivals and events organised and run by local people, organisations and commercial companies. This brochure brings together the city’s first Festival Season - something we can be proud of and celebrate.

There is so much talent right here in Southampton - sometimes we don’t recognise it. From Ivor Novello and Mercury Music Prize winnners and world famous musicians to award-winning film-makers, artists, writers and designers.

The city also boasts some wonderful venues for events and festivals, from the beautiful Palmerston Park in full bloom, Guildhall Square and the walls, to the places that operate all year round and also host festival events. The Mayflower, Turner Sims, the City Art Gallery and the Joiners are all nationally recognised venues.

But Festivals are also about getting involved, getting together, and being part of the celebration - whether of diversity, heritage, talent or just the city itself. This Festival Season brochure sets out some of the opportunities to do that.

We hope that you will join us.

There will be loads of activities lined up for you on the day along the route, so you can cycle some of the way, take a break, enjoy the entertainment and then get riding again! SO:fest

21 Sep Guildhall SquareFree

[email protected]

F sofestsT @sofestsT @sccevents

Southampton is a city full of talent, and SO:fest shows off the best in the Guildhall Square, the centre of the city’s cultural quarter in a one-day festival. The ‘strictly local’ event was started by the City Council with support from corporate sponsors in 2012. The first SO:fest was headlined by Mark Hill’s Artful, while Scarlet Soho brought their underground electro-pop back from major concerts in Germany. But SO:fest is also about nurturing and supporting young talent, and festival opener Charley Macaulay has gone on to be signed to a recording contract this year.

SO:fest also provides a platform for SOCO Music Project which works with schools and young musicians. With nearly 4000 people attending the concert last year, SO:fest will continue to grow and showcase the city’s talent. With the stage set against the Guildhall’s iconic façade, and the square’s modern glass buildings as the backdrop for a dazzling light show, SO:fest mixes the established and the new, on the stage and off. It reflects both the wealth of what Southampton has, and its aspirations for the future.

Black History MonthOctober Various locations

donjohn.co.uk [email protected]

Southampton has celebrated Black History Month in October over a number of years, and its impact and influence has increased over the years. Schools, universities and colleges always play a significant role.Education and information are key elements. Aims of Black History Month are: To promote knowledge of black history and experience. To disseminate information on positive black contributions. To heighten confidence and awareness of black people in their cultural heritage.

The lead organisation for Black History Month in Southampton is Positive Message Limited and they are supported by a variety of partner organisations including Southampton Solent University, The Spectrum Housing Group and Radian Housing. Although Southampton is the main focus, the work has reached out to Winchester, Portsmouth and the Bournemouth area. Black History Month is not publicly funded and operates by the support of the organisations quoted. It is anticipated that there will be activities relating to the arts such as music

poetry and literature. Dance, theatre and sports will also play their part and there will be activities connected to Southampton’s Black History which has been developing over the years. There will also be further opportunities to access the new film “The Colour of Love Revisited” featuring local people examining the issue of mixed race relationships in Southampton. We welcome any ideas people have about how they can make their contributions to the celebration by contacting:[email protected].

Oxjam is a music festival that is made up of hundreds of ‘Takeover’ events all across the UK in October. All events help to raise money for Oxfam and also raise awareness of Oxfam’s projects around the world. Since starting in 2006 there have been 4,000 Oxjam events nationwide; more than 50,000 musicians have performed; 1,000,000 people have attended Oxjam events and over two million pounds have been raised for Oxfam’s work. This year Southampton’s Oxjam Takeover event will be taking place on the weekend of the 18th, 19th and 20th of October in

multiple venues around the city. There will also be other fundraising events taking place at various venues leading up to the weekend. Southampton’s Oxjam Takeover is organised by a dedicated team of volunteers, however they will be looking for fundraising volunteers to help out at the events. We would like to make this the best Oxjam yet so any help would be appreciated. If you would like to get involved then please contact takeover manager Steve Lowis at [email protected] and keep an eye out for the events happening around your city.

Film Weeknovember Various locations

F southampton-film-week T @city_eye

Celebrating film across the City… Film organisation City Eye is delighted to announce the 6th Annual Southampton Film Week which promises all the excitement we have come to expect and more! The traditionally eclectic programme will include features, shorts, drama and documentary, animation, archive, music and film, artists’ moving image, competitions, masterclasses and workshops. And of course it wouldn’t be Film Week without the now established SFW: Youth Film Festival. Whether you want to watch a film or learn to make one;

if you like your film in the traditional way or something a little less conventional SFW13 will oblige! After a fantastic launch last year, the SFW: Shorts competition again invites filmmakers to submit short films for judging. The bar was set high in 2012 with winner Anna Cady’s film, 30%, going on to selection at Sundance Film Festival, but there were many great films entered. Look out for news and submission deadlines on the SFW and City Eye Websites along with full programme details in the weeks leading up to the festival.

Southampton Film Week takes place at venues right across Southampton, some you might expect and some you probably wouldn’t! We’ll see you there!
