Welcome

Welcome to one of the most active and dynamic Royal Yacht Clubs in the South of England.

The Royal Southampton Yacht Club has a long and proud tradition among yachtsmen and women in the South and dates its existence under its present title from 1875 although it can claim associations with sailing for a much longer period.

The Club has occupied its present base at Ocean Village since 1988 and before that was based in a magnificent mansion that was a former hotel in the city, then next door to the Hampshire County Cricket Club. But it was in 1875 that the club first blossomed into a yacht club with a royal warrant, re-establishing the Royal Southampton Yacht Club name which had been in abeyance for some years.

Now almost 150 years after the founding of the original Club, 25 years since the opening of the current Ocean Village Clubhouse and almost 50 years since the opening of Gins Clubhouse the dual attractions of a city waterfront location and idyllic riverside premises on the beautiful Beaulieu River have proved to be a winning combination, with outstandingly attractive facilities for members to enjoy the Club’s extensive cruising, racing and social activities.

One of the Clubs proudest links with the past, the Queen’s Cup, is still competed for by the very best exponents of yacht racing. The Cup was originally given to the Club by Queen Victoria and is traditionally awarded to the overall winner of the years most prestigious sailing event. It has often been awarded for the first day of racing at Cowes Week and in 2012 it was awarded to the winner of the J Class regatta.

A more detailed history of the Club is available online at www.rsyc.org.uk

RSYC On the Water

Throughout the year we maintain sailing programmes at all levels and for all ages, and in the past year have hosted the prestigious J Class

Regatta and associated Hundred Guinea Cup, provided a team of race officers for international sailing events, including the Olympics 2012, and by tradition help organise and manage the first days of racing at the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week regatta.

On the water, the RSYC can rightly claim to be among the very best at event organisation and at running extensive and active racing and cruising and cadet events.

The extensive Racing programme offers a wide range of double-handed and fully crewed racing and together with a busy cruising itinerary keeps members on the water throughout the year. Our Cadet experiences are offered several times a year and focus on encouraging younger members to enjoy being on the water and learning how to sail a dinghy and drive a RIB safely.

Complementing the bricks and mortar, the Club is extremely proud of its experienced and long serving staff who combine professionalism with friendliness and courtesy, keeping century old traditions alive.

The Royal Southampton is a friendly club, relaxed in its manner, but professional in standards, where members help run events both on the water and on the shore.

We are not just a yacht club… but a way of life.

The Clubhouses

The Royal Southampton Yacht Club is unique in having two clubhouses in the Solent area for the benefit of members, both with unique

venues overlooking the waterside and which are immediately adjacent to members’ moorings and car parking.

The main clubhouse is situated at Ocean Village marina and offers unrivalled waterside views together with a restaurant and bar that provide the highest standards of cuisine.

At Gins, our clubhouse is situated in the more tranquil surroundings of the Beaulieu River in the heart of the New Forest and is like a jewel in the crown where excellent mooring and sailing facilities and a relaxed ambience go hand in hand.

Both clubhouses provide excellent restaurant and bistro menus from summer barbecues to a much praised round the year carvery, to light bites and snacks, to drinks and canapés or even a full banquet, all of which are provided for our club events and member’s functions.

Our meeting rooms can cater for your private family party, a special occasion or accommodate a business meeting and are ideal venues for both boat launches and new boat naming ceremonies.

Off the water, you can expect a warm welcome at either of our two Solent clubhouses at Ocean Village, Southampton and at Gins on the river Beaulieu.

Our race organisation is supported by the Club’s helpful and knowledgeable staff together with one of the strongest and most experienced volunteer race management teams to be found anywhere in the UK; including International, National and Regional Officials.

Our 2013 Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions, supporting information, results, race reports and much more information besides will all be found on our website at www.rsyc.org.uk. For more information and help please contact the Sailing Secretary on 02380 210872 or e-mail [email protected].

• A separate class for any six one-design or white sail boats in any race or series

THE NEW

For 5 decades our passion has been to develop new ways of providing sailors with protection from the elements. Now we challenge convention again with the re-invention of the waterproof boot. The next generation Extreme Waterproof Boot features a twin-skin system which creates not one, but two waterproof barriers - protection from the outside and the inside.

The new Extreme Waterproof Boot provides a level of comfort and waterproofness that needs to be experienced to be believed.

Fully Crewed Racing

Royal Southampton Yacht Club is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive programmes of year-round fully crewed racing of

any Solent Yacht Club. Many of our events are run on Southampton Water adjacent to our Ocean Village clubhouse and offer challenging and competitive racing but without the ‘Solent chop’.

All our fully crewed races are open to Club members and non-members alike and many are dual scored for both IRC and Club rated boats. Typically there will be racing for two or three classes but we are always willing to establish a class for any group of six or more similar boats. Every race is followed by a prize-giving in the bar of the Ocean Village clubhouse where hot food and a warm welcome also await.

Southampton Water is within easy reach of Southampton, Hamble and Cowes marinas and offers scope for a wide variety of racing using fixed and laid race marks to suit the sailing wind. Conditions are typically more sheltered than in the Solent, whilst the funnelling effect of the channel sometimes means that we have enough sailing breeze when conditions in the Solent are too light.

All Southampton Water Series events attract individual prizes plus Series prizes as well as Series trophies presented at the annual fully crewed racing prize-giving and party.

Sunday Morning RacingBetween September and April we race on Sunday mornings. Race Series may vary but typically we run two races of around an hour’s duration each between 10 am and 1 pm. Racing is organised by one or two teams of race officers and committee boats depending on boat numbers.

Thursday Evening RacingBetween Easter and Cowes Week our Southampton Water racing is held on Thursday evenings. It’s a great way to relax after a long day by getting out on the water with friends for an hour of racing before sunset. And, as ever, each race is followed a prize-giving in the Ocean Village clubhouse bar.

Southampton Water

Once again we have exciting and competitive year-round racing in the relative shelter of Southampton Water. When conditions allow,

some races start near to After Barn buoy for the extra convenience of boats coming from the Hamble and elsewhere. Sunday morning racing normally includes two races and dual scored with prizes for RSYC results and the IRC scores shown separately.

DOYLE SAILS FROSBITE SERIES Alternate weekends 10 am January 13 - March 16Sponsored by Doyle Sails, this ten race Series starts the New Year on the water with two races on Southampton Water every other Sunday morning*. Separate classes for IRC, RSYC, MOCRA and any other classes with six or more boats. Get in training for the new season and be back to the Clubhouse by around 1.30 pm for a prize-giving and hot lunch. RORC will again issue new IRC certificates early at no extra cost. (*Note races 9 and 10 will be on Saturday, March 16 to avoid a clash with events on Sunday 17th.)

SPRING SERIES Sundays 10 am March 24 - April 28Another ten race Southampton Water Series with two races every Sunday morning (excluding Easter weekend) for multihulls and dual scored IRC/RSYC monohulls. Great competition on the water as the days begin to lengthen. We’ll be back in the clubhouse by around 1.30 pm for a prize-giving and lunch.

TWILIGHT SERIES Thursday evenings 7 pm May 2 - June 13Our popular Thursday evening racing starts with this Series of seven races. Aimed at making the most of the daylight on Southampton Water and still get back to the clubhouse for a prize giving and to relax over a drink and a hot supper.

SUMMER SERIES Thursday evenings 7 pm June 20 - July 25Six Southampton Water races on the Thursday evenings leading up to Cowes Week. Since this is the holiday season there will still be two discards. A great way to relax on a summer’s evening. Entry is open to multihulls and IRC/RSYC rated monohulls. There’ll be the usual prize-giving at the clubhouse after every race.

NEW! AUTUMN SERIES Sunday mornings September 1 - 22Ever wondered why there’s no racing in September? So did we, so we’ve decided to do something about it. We’ll use the popular Southampton Water Sunday morning format of two races per day, with the first starting soon after 10 am. and the second finishing by around 1.30 pm. There’ll be eight races in this four week Series with three discards. As usual, each morning’s racing will be followed by drinks and a prize-giving in the Ocean Village clubhouse bar.

WINTER SERIES Sundays 10 am October 13 - November 24We round off the Southampton Water sailing year with this popular Series. This year comprising 12 races over six Sundays*. There’ll be two races between 10 am and 1 pm each day. Monohulls with IRC certificates will be dual scored. At the Ocean Village clubhouse there’ll be prizes, a warm welcome and hot food after racing each week. (* No racing on Sunday, October 27.)

After a prize-giving in Cherbourg the next leg will be back to Weymouth and another party, then back to the Solent before the end of the week - just in time for the keenest competitors to start the ISC Round The Island Race on Saturday, June 1!

POOLE (AND BACK!) RACES Saturday/Sunday, July 6/7Another popular event returns this year. There’ll be a race to Poole and a barbeque or similar summer’s meal on Saturday evening when cruisers will also join in the fun. On Sunday we race back to the Solent for the chance of another result. This is a real friends and family affair combined with some friendly competition.

COWES WEEK Daily August 11 - 18Organised by Cowes Combined Clubs, including the RSYC, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is one of the world’s classic regattas. We are proud to award trophies for the first day’s racing, including the Queen’s Cup, Armitage Challenge Cup, Vanduara Bowl. Full regatta information at www.aamcowesweek.co.uk

RNLI RACE / RALLY Saturday/Sunday September 28/29Great fun and one of the friendliest events of the year, this is an opportunity for racers and cruisers to join in expressing our support for the RNLI. This year our destination on Saturday evening will be the RSYC’s Gins Clubhouse on the Beaulieu river after a Solent race of around three hours. Our fundraising dinner on Saturday night will be followed by a second Solent race on Sunday.

CHARITY PURSUIT RACE Sunday, December 1A light-hearted race to mark the end of our racing year and the start of the festive season. Racers and cruiser/racers start in order of RSYC rating and the faster boats try to catch the earlier starters.

Part of the entry fee goes to a sweepstake on the result, part to the Commodore’s charity. Racing will end before 1 pm so we can all meet at the Ocean Village clubhouse for the prize-giving, sweepstake, raffle and a prize for the best fancy dressed crew. Hot food will be available in the bar and restaurant.

It’s more than thirty years since the RSYC pioneered double handed racing and we remain the pre-eminent UK Club for this ever-popular sport which combines challenging competition on the water with a great spirit of

friendship and camaraderie between crews off the water.

Our annual double handed contest follows a well tried format whilst continually introducing improvements wherever the opportunity arises. In 2013 for example, there will be three IRC classes, plus the usual two Club classes for every event in the programme.

In 2013 we will once again be running a Series of eight races, any one of which can be entered as a stand-alone event. Together, four inshore races: The Spring, Island, Nab and Autumn Doubles make up an Inshore Series. And four offshore races: The Weymouth (two legs), Cherbourg and Long-Distance (this year to Le Havre) make up an Offshore Series. The eight races taken together make up the Main Double Handed Series for which a maximum of two discards may apply. In addition to sponsor’s prizes, trophies are awarded for each individual race, plus the Inshore, Offshore and Main Series. Series trophies are presented at the annual double handed racing prize-giving and party.

Double Handed Regatta. In 2013 we return to a two-day format with two races on Saturday followed by one race on the Sunday with a prize-giving at our Ocean Village clubhouse on the Saturday evening.

Double Handed Racing

Our Sponsors:Our Double Handed Racing wouldn’t be the same without the close and much valued support of our present Sponsors, Molson Coors. In 2013 the title brands will continue to be Sharp’s Doom Bar for the Regatta and Corona Extra for the races of the Inshore, Offshore and Main Series.

The 2013 Double Handed Series is sponsored by Corona ExtraIf you’ve not raced double handed, come and see what you’ve been missing! There’s a great atmosphere both on and off the water. In the Corona Extra Double Handed Series there are race trophies and three Series trophies to compete for: the Inshore, Offshore and Main Series.

SPRING SOLENT DOUBLE Saturday, April 13The first race of the season and of the Main and Inshore Series. Three or four hours racing of a passage flavour in the Solent. A race prize-giving and welcome at the Ocean Village clubhouse after racing.

WEYMOUTH DOUBLE Saturday, May 4 - Monday, May 6*The first races of the Offshore Series and the only event that combines two races - one outward and one return leg. There’s time to relax in Weymouth between races and at the prize-giving at the Royal Dorset Yacht Club. *If all boats arrive in Weymouth in good time, Leg 2 may be run on Sunday May 5.CHERBOURG DOUBLE Saturday, May 25The first cross-Channel event in this year’s Offshore Series. This popular race starts in the central Solent, this year on a Saturday morning instead of Friday evening. The Bank Holiday weekend will give you a chance to join in the Channel Triangle Race, enjoy a few more days in France or simply make a leisurely return.

ISLAND DOUBLE Saturday, July 20Always the most popular Inshore event, regularly attracting more than 100 boats. This year we’ll use the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club’s line for our start and finish off Cowes. Circumnavigate the Isle of Wight and collect a pair of engraved glasses as well as competing for the other prizes and trophies!

LE HAVRE DOUBLE Friday, August 23The longest and the last of the 2013 Offshore Series. This race over the August Bank Holiday can be challenging but a great welcome awaits us; plus the opportunity to linger and go cruising on the way home. This is the only 2013 Offshore Series race that starts on a Friday evening to increase the chance of a daylight landfall.

NAB TOWER DOUBLE Saturday, September 7It’s around 30 miles from the central Solent to the Nab Tower and back. This classic race seems to grow in popularity each year. Part of the Inshore Series. There’ll be drinks and a prize-giving at the Ocean Village clubhouse at the end of the day’s racing.

AUTUMN SOLENT DOUBLE Saturday, October 5The concluding race of the Inshore and Main Series takes us on a three or four hour race with a passage flavour in the Solent. A warm welcome awaits at the Ocean Village prize-giving after racing.

SHARP’S DOOM BAR DOUBLE HANDED REGATTA Saturday/Sunday, June 15/16This year sees the return of the Double Handed Regatta to a two-day format. There’ll be two races on Saturday and one on Sunday with a prize-giving and party at Ocean Village clubhouse on the Saturday evening. Our aim is a challenging event but with something for everyone.

Our year begins as always with our three frostbite rallies. These rallies are always planned so that the hardier souls whose boats are still afloat can come by water but by restricting the destinations to the mainland all may attend whatever the weather. These gatherings are an excellent opportunity to discuss the summer plans for the individual yachts or for newer members to meet and join in. Could be an icebreaker in more ways than one!

Marchwood YC is based in the old RN magazine on the river Test. This charming destination is easier to find on the water than by road.

At Warsash on the River Hamble, parts of the Rising Sun date back more than 200 years. The pub is on two floors with the restaurant upstairs offering stunning views of the river.

The RAF YC is one of our reciprocal clubs which always offers a warm welcome and is only a short stroll from Mercury Marina.

The main clubhouse in Ocean Village has berths in either the club pool or the marina which means that an evening’s entertainment can become an overnight stop. We have added three supper/talks to our programme this year. Our club is blessed with two club houses and with the extended pontoon at Gins complete with power and water offers the option of turning an evening into a weekend excursion.

Can I say how delighted we are with the work that you have done for us on Capisce. We are very very impressed with; a) the quality of the

workmanship, b) the service and speed with which you were able to then job, c) the courteousness and helpfulness of everybody we have dealt with from

Tecsew, not least of which being yourselves, thank you. We were very pleased to be able add our own aspect to the already successful design that you showed us from Lyra Mara by having windows in the section which joins the front of the bimini to the front of the spray hood. It makes the internal area lighter and will help with visibility if we ever leave it in

when on the move. The bimini conversion has already made a big difference to our comfort and well-being.

You already have a very good reputation, which is why we contacted you to do the work, we will be more than happy to recommend you to our sailing

This year the local school holidays start on Wednesday, July 24 and this gives us an opportunity to create two wonderful, long weekends at either end of the school holidays. We are planning to hold the Cadet event at Gins on the Thursday and Friday (July 25 and 26) and move our September Bembridge Rally to that weekend. This is a chance for parents, or grandparents to kick-start the holidays and get the children into sailing. If you don’t have cadets, don’t worry, Bembridge seems to attract children of all ages. Increasingly in the last few years this rally has been a joint event with our reciprocal clubs and this is a trend we are keen to continue, the dinner at Bembridge Sailing Club gives members of the clubs the chance to mix and discuss common issues. Inter-club boules, rowing, kite flying and sand castle competitions are, of course, weather dependent but the move from September to July rules out the Blackberry picking unless the seasons radically alter. This year the weekend coincides with Bembridge Harbour’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, so it should be a great party.

Our Bank holiday visit to Island Harbour is immediately preceded by our Cadet days at Netley and offers the opportunity of a final long weekend before the end of school holidays. This year the Ryde Sea Cadets brought over their canoes for all to try, add to this a BBQ and a walk to the Folly for lunch, spaces at the marina for campers and we have a winning formula we want to repeat in 2013.

When most organisations rally to other clubs they tend to be greeted by the staff and take over the facilities in isolation. We believe that there is much more to be had if we welcome the members of the host club and our reciprocal clubs to join in with our activities. What started as tri-club has now been renamed the Joint Club rallies. These begin with the May Day rally to Portsmouth. This year we shall base ourselves in the Royal Clarence a former RN victualing yard; how appropriate! The Gosport ferry takes us across to Gun Warf and Sunday lunch at the RNC & RAYC in old Portsmouth. Our September date takes us to Cowes with dinner at the Royal Corinthian and berths in Cowes Yacht Haven. Known for its reputation for hospitality, the Royal Corinthian serves some of the best food and wine to be had in Cowes. Our third joint rally takes us to Lymington Yacht Haven and dinner at the RLYC. Situated in the Western Solent this popular club is well known to our members

For those with even more free time the “Beyond” is entirely decided after the weekend, the only target is to be back at Gins for the annual Hog roast.

The Hog roast is open to all; our only request is that you book at least one week before since the size of the Hog is determined by the number of diners! The Hog is usually served with its crackling and apple sauce, accompanied by a selection of salads.

Portland RallyDate Destination HW Portsmouth Height June 15 Portland Rally 1645(BST) 4.3m

With Midsummer’s day approaching we are now able to enjoy the benefits of long daylight hours and thus a wide window within which we can “work our tide”. Although this cruise may be a little adventurous if it is to be achieved within one weekend, there are on the way, some obvious watering holes just in case we should need to shelter from a passing “hooligan” or stock up on supplies. Lymington’s Saturday market is always a favourite . Then there is the delightful anchorage at Studland Bay which provides an equally delightful walk along the coastal path to Swanage.

Having weighed anchor from Studland, we can enjoy a close encounter with the majestic Jurassic Coast all the way to Weymouth/Portland.

Some may find this a convenient start, in convivial company, for their summer cruise Westwards or indeed to the Channel Islands and the adjacent coasts of France.

We shall be sure to make contact with all those who express an interest in this cruise before finalising arrangements.

Whilst most of our rallies take us to destinations with pontoons, water and power it is nice to get back to our roots and practice some of the skills of self-sufficiency that attracted us to yachting in the first place. The ISC Round the Island Race this year, because of the tides, occurs in the fortnight set-aside for the Beyond cruise. Not everyone will be going to France so we have left our Keyhaven anchorage exercise in the programme. The plan is to sail down the Western Solent on Friday, anchor, and either a BBQ or visit to Keyhaven sailing club, and then watch the fleet go past early Saturday morning before moving to Lymington or Yarmouth.

The Newtown event is intentionally held out of season (usually November) on a date which, having taken the ebb tide from Southampton Water, enables us to take the flood tide by dinghy to Shalfleet quay and walk the mile or so to the New Inn for dinner. We normally moor our yachts to the visitors’ buoys in Newtown Creek or anchor in Clamerkin Lake. Having regard to the time of low water on 30th Nov., many of our members will be on the moorings by early afternoon and may then take the circular walk (about an hour) from the landing stage. We should then set off in our dinghies (with torch) at about 1800hrs. giving us time to enjoy our meal before the next ebb demands our return by dinghy to our moorings where we may gather for coffee or something stronger

Training

The RSYC has had a very successful programme of RYA Training over the last 15 years.

The Club is a recognised RYA Training Centre and runs both practical and theory courses for Club members and friends. The theory courses are, in the main, held at the Club with some of the more specialised courses being outsourced to other training schools. The Powerboat Level 2 Courses are held on local waters using the Club’s own Ribcraft 585 powerboat.

There is also a very healthy training scheme for those members wishing to progress through the RYA qualified race officer scheme and, once again, practical training takes place on the Club Committee Boat, a Mitchell 31, and the Ribcraft 585.

From time to time, a one day structured safety programme for man-over-board training and flare demonstration is run to allow members to practise on their own boats those aspects not normally covered by other courses. The recovery of a dummy from the water using own methods being the main exercise, but the opportunity to handle and fire flares is also part of the day’s activities.

The RYA Courses offered include:

Basic Navigation & Safety Theory; Day Skipper Theory; Yachtmaster Theory; Sea Survival; ISAF Offshore Safety Certificate; Diesel Engine; GMDSS VHF; RADAR; First Aid; ISAF Personal Safety.

Powerboat Level 2 and practical ‘own boat’ assessments for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) together with Inland Waterways

CEVNI Endorsement are also offered.

All courses are run by fully qualified RYA Instructors. Furthermore, if members wish to do courses outside the those programmed they can express their interest and if enough people can be found extra courses can be laid on.
