South Dublin County Council Environmental Services & Librarieswww.sdcc.ie

Welcome to South Dublin County Council’s 11th Annual Eco-Week. This week long event promoting awareness of the environment is a fantastic opportunity for schools, communities, businesses and citizens in South Dublin to educate themselves and become a part of the solution to environmental needs. There are tons of FREE events to suit everyone. In many cases the numbers are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.

This year we are asking South Dublin County to be aware of Climate Change. Empower yourself with the awareness and knowledge of how climate change affects your county. Adaptation to climate change has to be tailored to local needs. Everyone can do their part to tackle climate change issues.

ELIZABETH MURPHY PRESENTS WILLOW WONDER

In the course of one full school day we will introduce via slide show various aspects of biodiversity both nationally and internationally.

We will go on a field trip to explore our local biodiversity to look and see, record and map existing habitats and species.

We will investigate how we can work to help our biodiversity and how our actions can have a positive or a negative effect on our biodiversity. Where possible using natural and recycled materials we will build our own habitat i.e. plant a living willow structure or plant native wildflowers or allow an area to become wild with little or no maintenance or plant native trees or build a bug hotel or make a bird feeder or create a leaf pile or develop a nature trail. This will encourage a positive personal connection with our biodiversity. We will encourage teachers and students to bring our biodiversity into the class room on a daily basis, i.e. the journey of our lunch box, our clothes, our furniture. We will encourage sustainable practices and the use of natural materials for daily art projects.

BIODIVERSITY OF ROADSIDES IN SOUTH COUNTY DUBLIN WITH IRISH WILDLIFE TRUST

Roadsides in Ireland are subject to varying management regimes, which can have either positive or negative impacts on levels of biodiversity. The aim of this project is to engage with nominated community groups to assess the biodiversity value of a sample of roadside habitats in South County Dublin and to help formulate more biodiversity friendly management regimes in the local authority area. The project will include a number of workshops to educate and engage the local community groups on the wildlife value of roadsides and to provide basic flora and fauna identifications skills that will be used to survey a stretch of road in their community. The importance of biodiversity for community wellbeing will be emphasised and it is hoped that this will feature in future community enhancement works undertaken by these groups. In addition, a workshop/meeting will be held with local authority staff to discuss current roadside management regimes and to investigate biodiversity enhancing management of roadsides that is compatible roadside safety. It is hoped

that the Irish Wildlife Trust will liaise with other local authorities in the future to carry out this project at other locations.
