The 17 year old daughter of James and Heath- er Risko has dedicated her life to achieving a high level of success both on the tennis court and inside the classroom at South Meck. Her commit- ment to academics has opened many doors for the future. As the 2010 North Carolina High School Athletic Association tennis season takes its final turn, Kyla is more prepared than ever to charge through her senior season and onto a wonderful college experience. Kyla began playing ten- nis six years ago after watch- ing her parents head out onto the court. The sport looked fun and Kyla decided to give it a try. She enjoyed the sport from the start and began to improve every time she walked onto the court. Eventually others began to take notice and Kyla started making noise in the state rankings. At the end of the 2009 season, Kyla broke into the top 30 for the North Carolina 16’s division. She was very pleased with the accomplishment. “This was a major goal I set for my- self!” Heading into her senior year of tennis, hopes were quite high for the Lady Sabres Tennis Team led by Coach Greg Weaver. The team had improved with each year and Kyla along with fellow senior Allie Gamble had begun to form a solid core group. The team added Abby Segodni, a freshman who would play as the # 1 seed and also Saman- tha Forlenza, a transfer from Myers Park. Seniors Malia Moore and Madeline Long added outstanding senior leadership and the Sabres were on their way to the upper division of the Southwestern 4A Conference. The Sabres have worked their way into the North Caro- lina State Tournament and Kyla is very proud of this ac- complishment. “This is my Senior year and it means a lot to me to be able to pull it out in my last year playing high school tennis. It’s been an unbelievable year so far. We already had a solid team after last season, but this year we were fortunate to add some amazing players who re- ally contributed to the energy of the team. Additionally, we had a lot of experience going into the season this year and we were able to capitalize on that. Our desire to get better is growing and growing as we gain more experience and be- come closer as a team.” As for Kyla’s tennis game this fall, she has been full of hustle on the court. “I never give up on any ball! I make an effort to treat every point like it’s match point and run after everything, making my opponent win the point several times over. I make my opponents earn the points – I don’t give them away.” This same determination has led to amazing success inside the classroom for Kyla. She has been nominated as a candidate for The Park Schol- arship at North Carolina State University. Simply being nominated was very exciting for Kyla. Our goal is to help reduce the amount of injuries suffered by pitchers in our area. It’s very important to note that the clinic will have NO LIVE PITCH- ING, this clinic is A Day of Learning. Alan Tyson of Architech Sports and Physical Therapy has worked with more pitchers on every level of base- ball than anyone in the Southeast. His clients range from league pitch- ers to 10 year old recreational league pitchers. “Every day I speak to baseball par- ents and their number one question is; How do keep my son’s arm healthy? The next question usually comes from the son and he wants to know how he can increase his velocity,” said Tyson. “This clinic is designed to help provide instruction that goes hand in hand in reaching both the parent and the son’s goals.” In addition to Tyson, other well known coaches will be on hand to share their knowledge with young pitchers and their parents. Speakers include; St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training Coordinator and manager of the Johnson City Cardinals, Mike Shildt, Davidson College Head Base- ball Coach and Team USA coach Dick Cooke. Shildt and Cooke will be joined by a group of former major league baseball pitchers and current minor league pitchers at the Arm Care Clinic. The SCSR Team!

ARE YOU DOING YOUR JOB? Sure, you are a wonderful football, baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc player. All the college coaches like what they see when you are performing. Now ask yourself this very important question. Are they going to like what they see when your resume hits their desk? No, not your athletic resume, your academic resume. Believe it or not, a very large majority of college athletic opportunities are based on performance in the high school classroom. Yes, college coaches are looking for talented athletes. Even more of them are looking for hard working students. Very few college athletic scholarships are “full-rides” meaning all expenses paid. A couple of the higher profile sports are able to offer full scholarships, but did you know that NCAA Division 1 baseball schools are only allowed 11.7 scholarships. Do the math, most teams have 27-30 players. A coach can;t afford to give one of those players a full scholarship. However, a coach can find opportunities for the recruit to re-ceive additional scholarship money based on academic success. A 4.0 student will contend for academic money and allow the coaches to make easier deci-sions on how to divide the limited budget he/she has available.

Take a look at this chart for some of the non-revenue sports in Division 1 for an idea of how many scholarships are actually available.

Coaches also do not have the time to babysit players that are not committed to making good grades. If a coach takes a look at your transcript and sees a load of “C’s” and “D’s” they are not going to want to inherit that problem. It calls into question your dedication to the important aspects of life and sports. Any-time a coach can choose between two equally gifted athletes, they are going to fall for the 3/5 student way before the 2.2 student.

The four years of high school are so very important to your future. Do your job, make good grades and stay out of trouble. Don’t give a college coach the opportunity to give your scholarship to someone else because your transcript is a mess.

Fifteen year old Christina Kresser is an up and coming young swimmer. The daughter of David and Susan Kresser attends Marvin Ridge High School. Christina competes with SwimMAC in many sprint events. Let’s go beyond the pool with this impressive ninth grader.

When did you start to swim and why?“I started swimming for my neigh-

borhood swim team when I was ten because all of my little neighborhood friends encouraged me to do it with them for fun.”

What led you to begin to com-pete on a higher level with Swim Mac? “Last winter in 8th grade, I swam for Marvin Ridge Middle school and I loved the physical challenge it gave me to keep in such good shape and I loved the feeling of racing and being on a team but also having to work individually. I started MAC in Febru-ary.” What are your top events? “I am a sprinter, so the 50 free is my absolute favorite event, it’s also what I have my best times in. I also like breaststroke (100 and 200) and the 200 IM.” What do you consider your top three athletic accomplishments? “Making a AA or double A time in my first season with MAC. This summer, I made the Junior Olympic NC cut for 50 free in long course meters, after only swimming competitively for about 6 months. Going to that meet was such a great experience to see all

of the incredible swimmers out there! My other top accomplishment would be making finals in several events (200 breast and 50 free) at the Long Course Tarheel state meet. Describe your training sched-ule? “Swimmers have the most intense training schedule out of almost any sport I would imagine. I practice 6 days a week, Monday-Friday for about 3 hours a night and 3 hours early Saturday morning. Usually about an hour is dedicated to dry land exercises like pushups and weight training and then about 2 hours in the pool.” What are your goals for the next few years?“Swimming is all about endurance so first I want to build a really strong base with that. I would like to make some of the cuts for senior champs and sectionals. Also, make the state meets for high school swimming and possibly in my latter high school years go for an All American time. Then, hopefully I’ll swim for college and possibly the Olympics! Do you participate in any other

sports? “I used to be a cheerleader and I still tumble and do that a little, I also run track and field, and I’m a sprinter there too.” How do you perform in school?“I am almost always a straight A student, I’m in all honors courses and I have a 4.5 GPA. Academics, my parents have always taught me, come before sports. I am also involved in First Priority, a Christian club, and FBLA for leadership.” What else would others find in-teresting about you?“I play the piano, act and sing. I also teach piano and voice lessons through Kemper Ministries. I’m involved in my church’s youth group, Church at Charlotte. I love my swim team, the kids who swim are such dedicated people that I love being around be-cause they all have the same mindset and determination I do. The coaches at MAC are also incredible and will help you in the pool and outside of the pool, they truly care so much about you and love you. Swim MAC is a family, not just a swim team.”

BEYOND THE POOL WITH CHRISTINA KRESSER

Did one of your players just hit two home runs in a game? Do you know someone that has overcome obsta-cles to find success in youth sports? Do you have a student that has had great success in the classroom and in their sport? Know someone that just committed to play a sport in college? Did your child’s team just win a championship

and you have a great team photo? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I want

to encourage you to share the good news with The South Charlotte Sports Report. We will put your news and photos to good use in our paper or online at www.southcharlot-tesportsreport.com

STUDENT WRITERS

The South Charlotte Sports Report has an opening for another student writer for

the 2010-2011 school year.

If interested in gaining valuable experience, please email

[email protected]

“I want to study Chemical Engineering, so NC State is one of my top choice schools in the Carolinas because of its excellent reputation. There may be other awards to follow, but none have been decided yet. South Meck-lenburg has a lot of talented high achievers, so I’ll just keep doing my best in my senior year to see what happens.”

Kyla’s top choices for college are NC State, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Princeton and USC.

Kyla says she has always been a very technical person and that she enjoys understanding how things are made. Kyla has re-cently expressed a desire to go to law school after studying Chemi-cal Engineering so that she can

one day become Patent Attorney. High aspirations for this hard working high school senior!

Upon hearing about her lofty goals, we asked Kyla to share her favorite subject with us.

“Hmm, that’s really tough. It’s a close tie between Math-ematics, Computer Science, & Chemistry.”

Many would wonder just how Kyla has been able to find time to excel in tennis with such a chal-lenging academic schedule. She has learned all about time man-agement and the success has fol-lowed. Kyla also has found time to begin to write stories over the last two and a half years. She is currently in the middle of devel-opment on the ninth chapter of a fiction fantasy story.

Kyla came into South Meck-lenburg High School with lofty ambitions and a high desire to be challenged. The high school has been steady in presenting those challenges. It has truly brought out the very best in Kyla Risko.

“I’ve been really fortunate to attend South Mecklenburg High. It’s given me the opportunity to get a great education!”

South Mecklenburg High School has also been very for-tunate to have such a dedicated student-athlete. The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Kyla Risko for her dedication to overall success. We have no doubt that this young lady will continue to find amazing success as she moved forward into col-lege and life! Good luck Kyla!

The Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools/ Arbor Construction Group

Good Sportsmanship AwardHOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM

Forty-one boys came together in July, from at least six different elementary schools to form the 2010 6th Grade Holy Trinity Catholic Middle school team. These young men from varying degrees of experience playing football have worked very hard not only on the football field but also in the classroom during this difficult transition from Elementary school to Middle school. In victory or defeat, on the practice field and during school these young men always stay positive and maintain a high sense of morale. After every play, every tackle or every block, they all extend a hand to help their teammate or opponent up off the ground and get back to the huddle to continue their task at hand.

Together MACS and Arbor Constructionare building with integrity for our futures.

Winning Smiles

Thirteen year old Addie Rose Black is this week’s winner of The Quimby and Collins Wired For Excellence Award. The eighth grade daughter of Bill and Tracey Black runs cross country and plays basketball for Arborbrook Christian Academy. In cross country she has improved her times throughout the season. She has practiced with her team three days a week since the summer and then run two other days from home. That work paid off last week as she helped her team to win the conference championship.

Addie is a straight A student and very self directed. She does well in all subjects including her favorite, math. Addie is also a member of the girls ensemble group at Arborbrook.

In addition to her sports and school commitments, Addie also enjoys missions work. She participated in a trip to Nicaragua, where she worked on the sports mission team in small rural communities for the local children. Addie helped the older children play soccer, baseball, basketball in parks or schools and she played smaller sports games (bubbles, coloring, dodge ball, etc) with younger children. Addie also traveled to Roanoke, VA on a “World Chang-ers” mission trip. In Roanoke, she helped with house repairs for a week in 100 degree heat. Addie also assists with a “Room at the Inn” program with her church, helping to host homeless folks overnight. This experience has given Addie a better perspective on homelessness and how it can happen to anyone with a few bad breaks or poor choices. She will also volunteer this year with Operation Christmas Child here in Charlotte. Congratulations to Addie Rose Black for her hard work and commitment to make life better for others.

Tutoring is the oldest form of Instruction, begin-ning with parents providing one-to-one teaching to their children. In elementary and secondary educa-tion, one-to-one tutoring exists around the margins of group instruction. For example, teachers often work with individual children in the classroom dur-ing seatwork periods, and additionally during recess, study hall, or after school.

One particularly important application of tutor-ing that has increased in recent years is the use of tutors with first to third grade elementary chil-dren to prevent early reading failure. First through third grades are considered critical for those learning to read. Reading success in the early grades is an es-sential basis for success in later grades. Once a student enters into the fourth grade they are starting to read to learn, thus, an important tran-sition year for each stu-dent.

It makes much more sense to prevent learn-ing deficits early on than to attempt to remediate them in the later grades. One-to-One tutoring is likely to bring about sub-stantial improvement to your student in a short period of time. Tutors are able to adapt to the level of your child, the

pace they need to learn, and construct lesson plans to meet each students specific needs. If the child needs additional instruction, the tutor recognizes this immediately and can continue to work with them. If the child is catching on, the tutor can move forward to new material. This ability to fully adapt to the students unique needs makes progress that much easier.

Another benefit is that the tutor can devote full

attention to the child, which is motivating for those preparing to learn. The tutor is fully aware of when the student is exerting maximum effort and when he or she is not. As a result, the tutor can immediately praise appropriate behavior, providing a close link-age for the child between behavior and outcome.

NewPoint Learning Center offers One-to-one tutoring in a flexible and affordable environment. Please contact us to help your child succeed.

The statistics on injuries for pitchers are staggering; 45% of pitchers under age 12 have chronic elbow pain, among high school pitch-ers this number rises to 58%.

Pitchers suffer the most injuries (21.6%) of any position in all sports that were fol-lowed over a 3-year period by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association. Alan Tyson and other specialists will provide the best possible instruction on how to reduce your son’s chances of becoming an injury statistic. Alan has developed two programs; Pitching for Success and Power Pitching to train young pitchers and has written a book entitled the Pitcher’s Toolbox to give guidance to pitchers wanting to know more about how to train their arm safely. The clinic will combine his knowl-edge with other guests speakers from both the baseball and physical conditioning industries.

We would like to invite all baseball pitch-ers ages 12-18 to attend this unique clinic, scheduled to be held inside at Ardrey Kell High School on Saturday, December 4th from 8:00am - 12:00pm. Cost to attend is only $90 per pitcher (parents attend for free) and the enrollment is limited to provide the very best instruction.

To repeat, there will be NO LIVE PITCH-ING at this clinic, this is a day of learning and listening with top arm care specialists and baseball pitching coaches.

Providence Day School senior Gabby Gabriel is one of the top high school tennis players in the state. The 17 year old daughter of Nichole andSterling Gabriel has become a dominant force on the court for The Chargers of Providence Day. With a state championship in hand from last season and three consecutive years of being named All-State and All-Conference, and a Top-10 state ranking, Gabby has quite an impressive tennis resume. To add to her success, Gabby works hard in the classroom and brings home all “A’s” and “B’s” from Providence Day.

Let’s go beyond the court with this outstanding ten-nis player.

When did you begin to play tennis?“I received my first tennis racquet on my first Christmas. But I began playing when I was about five years old and then became more serious when I was about seven and played my first tournament at the age of nine.”

At what point did you start to see a real growth in your game?“When I was about 12, I started to really see just how intense junior tennis was and that’s when I realized that it was very important for me to workharder and really train because rankings started to really matter. Around the age of 14 was when I felt like I really had the hang of things and saw the most growth and that’s when I won 1st place in the NC State Closed tournament in Cary, NC.”

What are your top three athletic accom-plishments?“Winning the NC State Closed, Winning my first High School Tennis State Title last year and being named all state and all conference player in three straight years”

What do you consider the best part of your tennis game and why?“I would definitely have to consider my backhand my best shot, because I can create weird, but ef-fective angles from that side and I have the most power on that shot. I am also more comfortable with my backhand since I always play that side when I play doubles.”

What area of your tennis game needs the most improvement?“My overheads are still a work in progress. Ever since I was little, I have always tried to avoid hit-ting them because my timing never seemed right but I have gotten a little more comfortable with them since I’ve been working on them a lot lately.”

Do you enjoy playing doubles and do you have a favorite partner?“I really enjoy playing doubles, because I feel like there is way less pressure in a doubles match because it’s not all about you, but there’s still the pressure to perform well so you don’t disappoint your partner. I love playing doubles with my younger sister Jasmine Gabriel (15, Weddington High School.) She understands me best and I know that she will always have my back but to be honest it’s hard for us to play with each other on the court because we do tend to argue a lot while playing with each other. Besides my sister though, I re-ally like to play doubles with Umarah Mughnee because she is a great partner and we have played on the same team for the past two years for Provi-dence Day School. She knows how to lift me up when I’m down and our strengths together make us a tough team to beat.”

What do you see in the future for your ten-nis career?“Hopefully I sign to a great Division 1 school that I enjoy. I hope I find a team that I can see myself on for 4 years and do great things with them and hopefully develop my game.”
