The South Charlotte Sports Report Summer Camps Tour is all set for its sixth year of providing first class, customer service based, fun camps for area youth. With a primary focus on offering affordable camps with the top coaches in the area, the South Charlotte Sports Camps have developed a very positive reputation in the community. This summer, camps offered include: a Basketball Shooting Academy, the Multi-Sport Camp of Champions, the premiere Volley-ball Camp in the area, a dynamic Summer Basketball Camp and the Future Stars Sports Camp. Each camp is led by a well-respected coach in the area. The camps are all committed to increasing the campers knowledge in the chosen sport in a clean, safe, professional environment. Many of the camps sell out each season, so now is the time to secure your child’s spot.

“I enjoy offering the camps every summer,” said Tripp Roakes, owner of the South Charlotte Sports Report. “I am very fortunate to have partnered with such well respected coaches as Mike Craft (Ardrey Kell Basketball), Zoe Bell (Ardrey Kell Volleyball), Karen Bradbury (Providence Volleyball) Ryan Shinn (Elon Park and Hawk Ridge) and Mike Stricker (Dynamic Performance Sports). We have all worked very hard to build the South Charlotte Sports Report camp program into something we can all be proud of. Everyone on my staff looks forward to working with the campers and helping them to enjoy their chosen sport with more success and a stronger fundamental foundation.”

Charlotte Latin School senior Will Almquist has firmly secured the title of Student-Athlete by com-bining amazing success on and off the field of play. The 19-year-old son of Robert and Perry Almquist has been a key player for both the football and la-

crosse teams at Charlotte Latin. As a middle line-backer and guard on the football team, Will was named All-State at guard. In addition he served as a captain on the team. In lacrosse, he provides strong leadership as a captain from his defensive midfield and faceoff positions. Inside the classroom, Will is an even greater success as a Cum Laude student and a recipient of the prestigious Morehead-Cain Schol-arship at UNC-Chapel Hill.

As Will looks back on his athletic career as a Latin Hawk, he says his favorite memory is, “Beat-ing Charlotte Christian for Homecoming my senior year. Specifically, when we scored a touchdown right before halftime on a screen back pass and then con-verted the two-point conversion with a Statue of Lib-erty play. The crowd was going crazy. It was the best atmosphere of a Latin home game all year.”

For lacrosse, Will’s top memory is, “Beating both Providence Day and Country Day my Senior year.”

Will’s lacrosse coach Dick Sipperly has great re-spect for the senior leader.

“Will Almquist is an outstanding young man. He is both a leader on the team and with the Charlotte Latin student body. As a lacrosse player Will has an outstanding grasp on our defensive concepts and the ability to teach the younger players in a mentoring way. As a three year starter, Will has played defen-sive midfield, he is a hard-nosed defender and plays every minute with passion for the game. His line-backer skills on the football field translate well to his position on the lacrosse field.”

Fortunately for Will, his athletic success is just one part of his life. By all accounts, Will is an amaz-ing teenager that has balanced athletics, academics and a social life with great success. His hard work

was noticed by his peers and the Charlotte Latin School leadership who elected to nominate him for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. Will was very ex-cited to learn about the initial nomination. He ea-gerly entered into the demanding process of com-peting for the scholarship.

“The process is fairly involved. After being nomi-nated by my school, I had to complete a multi-page application with several essays. After that applica-tion was reviewed, I advanced to Semifinalist status where I interviewed in Charlotte. After the regional round interview in Charlotte, I advanced to the Fi-nalist weekend in Chapel Hill where I interviewed again. A few days after Finalist weekend, I was noti-fied that I had been offered the Scholarship. In short the process, whether it be through the initial essays or the subsequent interviews was about discussing what I was interested in and how that impacted my life and the person that I have become.”

Once he was notified that he was indeed a recipi-ent of the scholarship, Will was extremely excited and left with a tough decision as he was also looking at possibly attending Princeton and Yale.

“It was an incredible feeling. I was excited but also very humbled. The individuals who compete for the Morehead, especially the finalists, are incredible people in so many different ways, so to have been given the confidence of the Morehead-Cain Founda-tion is especially exciting.”

After much thought, Will followed his heart and chose to accept the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at UNC-Chapel Hill.

BASEBALL TOURNEY TO STOCK SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

Queen City Diamond Sports is offering a one day baseball tournament to ben-efit Second Harvest Food Bank. The date is Sunday June 3. It will be hosted at East Mecklenburg High School and Lansdowne Elementary. Entry fee is $175.00 . If a team donates 50 cans of food to the drive, the entry fee will be $150.00. Each team will play � games. We are seeking teams from ages 7-1�. All skill levels are encouraged to enter. There will not be an admission charge for the tournament. We are asking that each person donate a minimum of 2 cans of food. Space is limited so please sign up as soon as possible. We hope that you will join our cause to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.

Ardrey Kell High School senior Jordan Hostetler and the Knights softball team captured their fourth consecutive Southwestern 4A Tourna-ment Championship last week on the campus of UNCC. Three members of the team, Jordan, Taylor Freeman and Alexa Grauer have been a part of all four championships. Jordan, the daughter of Dave and Anita Hostetler, has played catcher and filled the role of vocal team leader for the Knights the last couple of seasons.

Her desire to win and her reputation for leaving it all on the field has been a key part of the Knights success on the softball field. With the talent to play college softball, Jordan made the decision a year ago to not pursue a college playing opportunity and instead focus on her academic goal of majoring in Speech Pathology with children.

Jordan and the Knights captured their first round game with an excit-ing comeback over Davie County on Friday Night. Jordan delivered the key hit that led to a massive celebra-tion for her team. With one single loss, Jordan knows her softball career could come to an end at any time. Until then, Jordan will give her all to extend the Knight’s season for as long as possible.

When and why did you begin playing softball?“I began playing softball because it was a family sport and my grand-parents loved watching the grand-children play!”

What are your top memories playing softball?“My top memories playing softball would have to be winning 4th place in the World Series with the Char-lotte Blaze. Last year in the confer-

ence tournament at Ardrey Kell, we played Myers Park to determine who played in the Conference Champion-ship. We played for two and a half hours and only 5 innings, through strength, determination, and team-work we came together and run ruled Myers 24-14! The most amaz-ing memory I have throughout my years would have to be winning four consecutive conference tournament titles with my two best friends who I have played softball with for 8 years, Alexa Grauer and Taylor Freeman.” What are the top honors you have won playing softball?“I have won All-Conference twice and Honorable Mention, I was also selected as a finalist for Gamer of the Year at The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove Dinner.”

You recently won your fourth consecutive conference tourney championship, how exciting was that?“Winning my final conference tour-nament as a senior with my best friends by my side and my coach from travel ball was such a great experience that I will never forget. I couldn’t have asked to have played with anyone else my high school career. I couldn’t imagine experienc-ing all of the fun times, great wins, and also hardships with anyone else, these girls have encouraged me and helped me through everything. With-out each other I don’t think we would be the same softball players or indi-viduals that we are today. I am going to miss playing with these girls, but the memories will be forever imprint-ed in my heart.”

What led you to choose the posi-tion of catcher?“I was originally the outfielder from Andover, Minnesota who played slow pitch softball, until I tried out for 12 & under fastpitch softball for Coach Bob Bove’s team. He was the one who encouraged me to become a catcher and he pushed me to become the best catcher that I can be. He takes the credit for making me the catcher that I am today, and I give him credit where it is needed. Thank you Coach Bove for pushing me to become such a great softball player, I would not be where I am today without you.”

Do you enjoy serving as a leader on your team? What are some of the things you do to lead the team? “I was fortunate enough to receive the title as a captain for my team for the past two years. I am a very vocal individual and make sure that our team is always in check. Pep talks are one of the best assets to the team. One of the biggest contributions to the

team that I helped coordinate along with Sophomore, Erin Powers was a team meeting in the beginning of the year. Since we had lost so many seniors in the last couple of years, we are a fairly new young team and many of us did not communicate or work together well. Thanks to the meeting we all had a nice dinner and shared what was on our minds and what we could all improve on to becoming a better team, since then we have been on an awesome win-ning streak and have all been closer than ever.”

A year ago you decided to not pursue a college playing oppor-tunity, what led you to make that decision?“As many of my coaches, family, and friends tell me that I could have played college softball, I decided that I wanted to attend a four-year university and receive a good edu-cation. I am always thinking about the future and it made sense to get a degree in an area that I love rather than play softball and risk the chance of falling behind on my school work. This way once I graduate college I will be able to obtain a steady job,

because the odds of me going to play softball on the USA team is slim to none. I am proud to announce that I will be attending East Carolina Uni-versity in the fall to major in Speech Pathology with children and minor in nutrition.”

How did you perform in the classroom?“As a senior at Ardrey Kell High School I have an overall 3.89 GPA. I am a member of National Honors Society, National Technical Honors Society, and am the Secretary of FC-CLA.”

Would you like to thank any-one as your high school career comes to a close?“Along with my coaches, my team-mates, my family, and my friends, I want to thank my parents for always supporting and encouraging me to succeed in life and in softball. I also want to thank Tripp and Grace Roakes for all they have done for me and the South Charlotte Sports Re-port, you guys do a fantastic job and work very hard at what you do. I will miss you all so much next year.”

ERIN POWERSArdrey Kell High School sophomore softball player Erin Powers has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. Last week, Erin was named Most Valuable Player in the Southwestern 4A Confer-ence Tournament as she helped the Knights with their fourth consecutive conference tournament. Erin is the 16-year-old daughter of Kevin and Katie Powers and she plays center-field for both the Knights and the Lady Blues 18U Demarini Showcase Team.

Last season Erin was named as the Ardrey Kell Varsity Soft-ball Rookie of the Year. With her performance this season, many honors should be coming at the end of the season. The Knights captured their first round state playoff game and their season continues this week. Following the school season, Erin and her showcase team will travel the country playing against the best teams and players in the 18U divi-sion. Erin hopes to continue her softball career into college and pursue her interest in Medical Science.

Inside the classroom, Erin carries a 4.�5 grade point average and she is enrolled in many Honor’s level classes. Next season she plans to take AP courses. Congratulations to Erin Pow-ers for being named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

CLAY FISHERProvidence Day School senior Clay Fisher has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week. Clay, the son of Fred and Charla Fisher plays lacrosse for the Chargers and he holds the school record for most takeaways in a single season. Clay also earned a spot on the prestigious North Carolina Great 38 team playing his long stick midfielder position. With the help of Clay, the Chargers are currently competing for the NCISAA State Championship.

Clay began playing lacrosse in 7th grade and he moved to the long stick midfielder position this season. Clay also com-petes in the Lumberjack and Polar Bear Lacrosse leagues.

Inside the classroom Clay carries a 4.3 grade point aver-age and he is enrolled in Honors and AP classes. Clay is a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Student Government, and the Global Studies Program. He plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill next season and play club lacrosse. Congratulations to Clay Fisher, the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student Athlete of the Week.

Cuthbertson Middle School 7th grader Callen Nuccio has been named the Quimby and Col-lins Orthodontics “Wired For Excellence” Award winner. Callen is the son of Eric and Mary Jo Nuccio and he is a member of the Cuthbertson Middle School Baseball Team and the Dirtbags Club Baseball Team. Callen also plays for the middle school basketball team and football team.

Callen lists his top three athletic memories as winning the 7th grade middle school football championship, hitting his first home run and finishing 5th in the Elite 3� World Series in Orlando.

Callen is a member of the A/B Honor Roll and his favorite subject is Math. Congratulations to Callen Nuccio for being named the Quimby and Collins Orthodontics “Wired For Excel-lence” Award winner.

The South Charlotte Sports Report is excited to announce the hiring of Charlotte Catholic High School �011 graduate and UNC Chapel Hill student, Kelly MacDevette, for a sales internship position. Kelly, the daughter of Declan and Debbie MacDe-vette, will focus on the growth of advertising partners for the South Charlotte Sports Report this summer. Kelly is working hard to enter into the Business School at UNC Chapel Hill and hopes to grow the South Charlotte Sports Report in her internship.

Now with graduation just weeks away, Will has had time to reflect back on the success of high school. He set many goals over the last few years and found a way to manage his time to reach those goals.

“I think for me in both athletics and academics it comes down to setting goals for myself and having the discipline to achieve them. One thing that I took from athletics that I apply to the classroom on a daily basis is the importance of discipline. Achieving anything worthwhile is a time consuming process, and there were points in school or in sports where I needed to rely on discipline to push through to achieve my goals. I think that also fits into the realm of time management. During the season, especially football, I could have two-and-half hour practices every day. It was very difficult for me to come home from practice and work longer than two or three hours a night. Therefore, in or-der to get my work done, I would work for several hours every weekend to finish assignments and study for tests that were coming the next week. That required more than anything discipline and time management and remaining goal oriented.”

In looking at Will’s academic resume, it’s clear to see how dedicated he remained to his goals. In addition to being inducted into the Cum Laude Society in 11th grade, Will was a National Merit Finalist, he won a Harvard Book Award, Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award and the �011 Hawk Eye Award. Will scored a single day �350 on the SAT and has hit 800 on SAT subject tests in Biol-ogy, US History, Chemistry and Math II. His leadership resume includes; Editor in Chief of the school newspaper, The Hawk Eye, Honor Council Representative and over 150 hours of community service.

Many of those 150 hours were served helping Freedom School Partners.

“Freedom School Partners is an organization that is particular dear to my heart because they take an issues that is of great importance to me, education, and work to make concrete improvement in the lives of every student that comes through the programming. My experiencing with the Freedom Schools was enriching and energizing because of the people I worked with the students I met.”

As Will moves onto college, varsity football and la-crosse will become a thing of the past. He does however hope to play Club Lacrosse in Chapel Hill. Will is very much looking forward to the complete college experience and we are sure he will find one.

In closing, Will reflects back on his time at Charlotte Latin and what it meant to be a Latin Hawk.

“I think above all else I will remember the people and the culture that made my experience at Latin so special. In my mind the best thing about Latin is that everybody is encouraged to work hard and achieve whether it be in academics, athletics, arts, or even service initiatives. That environment is incredibly energizing. But not only is hard work encouraged, there is a great community of support, where students and faculty support each other which makes the experience that much more meaning-ful. I am reminded of that culture in every coach, teacher, teammate, and classmate that I have worked with over the years.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Will Almquist for reaching such amazing heights while in high school. His dedication to being a true Student-Athlete is an inspiration to many. We wish Will the very best as he moves forward with life on a college campus.

Charlotte Latin senior Sam Franklin is a tall, strong baseball pitcher for Charlotte Latin School. He is the son of Bo and Karen Franklin and Curt & Suzanne Pires. Sam recently committed to play baseball at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Geor-gia. Sam has played many years of travel baseball and has the opportunity to compete at Disney World with the Stanford All-Star Prospect Camp. His top memory for Latin baseball is his win over Charlotte Country Day earlier this season.

What are your top three athletic accom-plishments?“My top athletic accomplishment came in the summer of 2010, when I threw and won both games of a doubleheader during a tournament at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex. After a five inning win on a side field, we played our sec-ond game in the Atlanta Braves spring training stadium, where I threw seven innings, allowing only one run off of two hits and a walk. My num-ber 2 accomplishment came in the championship game of my 10U Little League season. After our

team allowed five runs in the first inning, I came in the second and retired 15 straight batters, striking out 12, helping to lead our team to a 10-5 victory and my second straight championship. Last but not least was my trip to the 13U USSSA World Series in Johnson City, TN, with the then Southside Spartans. Together with my former teammates Kyle Arbuckle (Indiana), Xander Maddox (Richmond), and Tim Mansfield (Louisburg), we represented the Charlotte area, playing against teams ranging from Florida to Ohio, finishing twelfth out of thirty-two teams.”

What led you to choose Oglethorpe? “It was only about six weeks ago that I heard about Oglethorpe University. I went on a trip to Atlanta to watch Birmingham-Southern, which was an option at the time, play at Oglethorpe. For good measure, we had arranged to meet with the coaches of both schools, and it was after talking to Coach Giordano that I felt Oglethorpe might be the place for me. He expressed interest from the very beginning and told me that Ogletho-rpe was looking to add depth in the rotation and he even had one of his players give me an improvised tour, because the admissions office was closed on Sundays. But the key was the phone call he gave me four days before the May 1st deadline, and it was the next day that I decided on Oglethorpe. The Atlanta location helped a little as well.”

Have a major in mind? “Yes, I plan on participating in the three-two mechanical engineering program that Oglethorpe offers in coordination with Georgia Tech. The program gives me the op-portunity to earn a Bachelors degree of science in three years from Oglethorpe and then earn a Masters degree of mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech in an ad-ditional two years.”

Tell our readers about the school?“Oglethorpe is a small liberal arts school, roughly 1100 students, about ten miles outside of downtown Atlanta. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character and atmosphere. Oglethorpe has a tradi-tion of strong athletic programs, and they are a member of the competitive Southern Athletic Association.”

How did you perform in the class-room at Charlotte Latin?“I try very hard to succeed in the classroom as I do on the field, and balancing the two has always been key. Academics has al-ways been top priority for me, and with my desire to pursue a career in engineering, I knew that it was important that I stayed on top of my classroom performance. This past school year I had a 3.7 GPA and I took three AP classes. I have been on the Headmaster’s list and Honor Roll all four years of high school and I am a member of the National Honor Society.”

The South Charlotte Recreation Association River Dogs Baseball Team is working hard as a team this spring. Coaches Jeff Devine and John Reilly said, “These boys truly play as a TEAM. We focused on comradely to build the TEAM Concept and the boys bought into the idea of TEAM baseball. Our pitching has been strong all year long. Most importantly we have 1 or � different players each game that step-up and carry their team. All 10 of the boys have done it at least once or twice this year.”

KEEPING UP WITH LEXI KING

Your lungs gasp for every little oxy-gen atom they can find. The finish is in reach after you ran ahead of everyone in the competition. Suddenly, you hear breathing. A peek to your right shows a little seventh grade girl, now ahead of you, pulling away to the finish. This seventh grade girl is Lexi King and this story is all too famil-iar to her competi-tion. Lexi, the daugh-ter of Melissa Pierce and Roger King, has left everyone in the

dust running cross- country. Only a seventh grader at Mar-vin Ridge Middle School, Lexi has been undefeated in middle school competition so far. She is also undefeated on her re-port card, scoring straight A’s all year.

Lexi was looking for a sport to compete in and heard great things about cross- country. In fourth grade, she started her running career by joining Girls On The Run. From there, it seemed to stick.

Lexi has adopted cross-country as a new lifestyle. Running is part of her everyday routine. She runs at least 30-45 min-utes six days a week as hard as possible. For Lexi, this is pretty fast. She can run a mile in 5:31 which is unheard of for a girl her age. The summer is no break, in fact, she actually runs 45-60 minutes when school is out. This nonstop training is what has propelled Lexi to such success.

Lexi was officially recognized as an All- American when she ran a 3K (1.86 miles) in the Junior Olympics at Myrtle Beach last December. She ran the race in 10:59 which placed her �4th in the country. While at the Nike Cross Nationals in Cary, NC, Lexi ran a 5K (3.1 miles) in 19:0�. That pace of 6:08 per mile is difficult to sustain for a single mile. Lexi kept this pace for over three miles. Her middle school competitors have all finished looking at her ponytail from behind. She is undefeated.

“I like longer distances the most, especially the 5K. It isn’t a sprint, so I have to hold my pace the whole time. I like to get a strong start ahead of everyone, then hold my pace for the rest of the race. At the end, I sprint as fast as I can to get the best time possible.”

It is easy to get distracted while running. One of the things that makes Lexi great is her focus. During training, she does what it takes to run her best and concentrates on getting bet-ter. Instead of looking up at the clouds in the sky, Lexi is fo-cused on the moment of running. Racing means she has her own internal timer she wants to beat. She is racing to beat not only other runners, but also her previous times. Her sense of urgency at the end of races is the key to shaving every second possible from her time.

“In the future, I would like to get a cross- country scholar-ship to college. Hopefully, I can go on to the Olympics and compete in an event. I am just thankful for all the gifts I have.”

Academics is another one of Lexi’s many gifts. Only A’s have appeared on her report cards this year. She is also a newly inducted member of the Marvin Ridge Middle School Beta Club. On the outside Lexi is a normal seventh grade girl who enjoys hanging out with her friends.

The Park Sharon Athletic Association and Coach Tish Macuga worked ex-tremely hard this season to build a 6U softball team. Their efforts have been rewarded with a wonderful experience for the Park Sharon Kitty Cats.

Coach Macuga said, “We were so excited to put together this 6U team. The girls have embraced all the aspects of softball. Especially the chanting, Ava quickly made up and taught the girls, “we look cute all dressed in pink, we are tougher than you think, Goooo Kitty Cats!”
