The SCSR Team!

HOW DO I GET IN THE PAPER? By far the number one question I am asked is “how do I get my son/daugh-ter/friend/team in the South Charlotte Sports Report?” The answer is quite simple. In every issue ever published I have printed my email address mul-tiple times. All you need to do it take the address -- [email protected] and send us your story idea, your team photos or any other thoughts you may have for a story. While we can’t print everything we receive, the one thing I can guarantee you is that if you don’t send it, then we can’t print it. A couple of quick tips to give your story or photo the best chance of appearing in The South Charlotte Sports Report:

Send clear, bright, large file size photos. Facebook and cell phone photos don’t work. We also can’t use photos of folks acting silly or making faces.

Let us know who is in the photo, by row and left to right. Please don’t type in ALL CAPS.

Tell us what you won, where you won it and how you won the big event!

Tell us about kids that are successful in the classroom and the commu-nity. We want to highlight student athletes that are working hard versus the ones that only do what’s needed to stay academically eligible.

FACEBOOK US Starting in 2011, The South Charlotte Sports Report will begin to award prizes to our FACEBOOK Page members. We will give away gift certificates, free camp enrollment, items from our advertisers and more! Joining our FACE-BOOK page is a great way to stay up to the minute on breaking news, com-mentary and other community information. CAMP WITH US Don’t forget to sign your children up for our basketball, football and volleyball camps on December 22nd and 23rd. Our camps offer the top coaches in the area, great customer service and affordable pricing! It’s also a great chance for six hours of Christmas shopping while the kids are entertained! PLAY, SMILE AND LEARN AT THE GODDARD SCHOOL®

Why do children at The Goddard School® located in Waxhaw look like they’re having so much fun? Because play is the foun-dation of learning and Goddard takes play seriously! Children explore learning centers; read in library nooks; and climb and run outdoors. Cheery classrooms and large playgrounds form the backdrop to a learning environment where children participate in enriching activities.

Philip Featherstone is the on-site owner of the preschool and is available to faculty, children and families every day. They also have an education director who is responsible for curriculum and programming. This dual management system gives the director freedom to observe classrooms, mentor faculty and develop a healthy learning environment while the owner focuses on daily busi-ness operations.

“Our management team and faculty work very hard every day to ensure children in our program receive the best possible early learning experiences,” said Philip. Qualified teachers develop lesson plans and create an atmosphere where children can learn and gain the skills that will guide them toward future academic success. They are exposed to cognitive skills, social skills and lan-guage art skills. The Goddard School located in Waxhaw offers programs designed to enhance the development of children from six weeks to six years of age and includes an after-school enrichment and summer program. The school is open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

According to Philip, “Goddard focuses on building a balanced foundation for each child and encourages them to develop at their own pace.” In addition to a comprehensive core curriculum, the School provides a variety of enrichment programs to enhance each child’s learning experience. These educational resources are offered through age-appropriate activities to further prepare children for a lifelong love of learning and include: Dance Fundamentals, Fitness, Foreign Language, Language Arts, Literacy, Manners, Math Readiness, Music and Movement, Nutrition, Science Exploration, Sign Language and Yoga.

Choosing The Goddard School means children will make friends, discover that learning is fun, and feel safe every day. Goddard’s year round program provides consistency for children, while half or full-day schedules offer flexibility to families. Stop by for a tour of The Goddard School located at 1528 Providence Road South in Waxhaw during their Grand Opening celebration on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and receive 50% off the first month’s tuition by enrolling at the event. To learn more, call 704-243-0120 or visit www.goddardschool.com.

The Marvin Ridge Middle School 7th Grade Football Team earned a repeat of their sixth grade conference championship this fall. The Mavericks topped Weddington Middle School for the title.

Community House Middle School finished its fall football season with a 6-1 record, the best in their history. Amazingly the team was winless last season. A hard month of practice in September led the team to a fantastic season.

Drayton Reed wants you to know something. He holds the team record for most shots made in a row. “Four,” he says, an impish grin spreading wide across his face. It’s an accomplishment to be proud of on a team full of athletes who constantly exceed their own expectations, thrilling them-selves, their teammates, their buddies and their families.

Drayton is 10 and plays with a dozen other athletes in the younger division of the WCWAA Challenger Sports Basket-ball program in Union County. The Challenger Basketball program – like baseball in the spring, bowling in the winter, and more sports to come – is designed to provide sporting opportunities for special needs youth in the Union County area.

Now in its second season, basketball registration grew 30% percent this fall, driven by more than 30 players turn-ing out for the older division and reflecting overall expansion throughout the Challenger Sports program. Mark Cheek, Challenger Basketball commissioner, says the explosive growth is based primarily on returning athletes, word-of-mouth recruitment of new families, and favorable coverage of the program by local media supporters.

Gina Fisher, president of the Challengers board, is quick to point out three other major factors behind the growth.

“We couldn’t have done this without the support of the Wesley Chapel-Wedding-ton Athletic Association (WCWAA) – the board and families of that great organiza-tion and the local community have been phenomenal. Also, Weddington Middle School has been a super host for our basketball program – making sure we had a top notch place to play. And finally, every sport we offer is made possible by vol-unteer coaches and buddies coming alongside every single athlete to support them, encourage them, and cheer them on. We have adult buddies, teenagers, even middle schoolers – all of them just love on these athletes and make every game a special event in their lives.”

Drayton doesn’t know about growth rates or sponsors. He just knows he loves the sound of a swish and the feel of a high-five. Just like any other athlete.

For more information on the Challenger Sports Program check out their page on the WCWAA.org website.

BEYOND THE GAME WITH TRENT JOHNSONWritten by Jade Carlson, Cuthbertson High School

Cuthbertson High School varsity soccer captain and goal keeper Trent Johnson has been an incredible asset for the team this season. The senior led the Cavaliers to win the Rocky River Conference in both 2009 and 2010, while also maintain-ing status as the student body president with a GPA of 4.77. Trent’s hard work and dedica-tion rewarded him this year when he committed to Furman University.

How did you and the team prepare for the Rocky River Conference?“The season started early for us. We started work outs the second week of June. From that point on, we all were pre-paring for conference play and it didn’t matter if you were a freshmen or a senior, everyone was working just as hard.”

You had a very successful season playing keeper this year, have you ever considered other positions?“Playing different positions is an occasional hope, but I know that I belong in the goal. However, this does not hold me back from working on my ball skills.”

What led you to begin playing soccer?“I started playing soccer at a very young age. Both my older brothers, Corey and Mitchell, played soccer growing up too, so I was always around a field.”

What kind of activities do you do to keep in shape for soccer during the off season? “Thankfully I don’t have much of an off season. High school soccer runs from about June to mid November and the Academy season picks up right when high season ends and runs all the way to June.”

How do you manage to achieve your consistent high academic standing while also juggling your soccer obligations? “Learning to juggle both soccer and school at the same time has not been easy. I can recall many late nights after games and practice, sitting at my desk with a bottle of water to keep me awake, doing homework and studying until I couldn’t keep my head up anymore.”

Do you have any pre-game rituals or traditions?“Before each game I always try and say something to my defenders or give them a high five or fist pump. On my jog to the goal I also have time to say the Lord’s Prayer. But, I don’t really care in what order I put on my cleats or anything. My main thing is just making sure I am focused and ready for the game.”

What other activities do you do outside of soccer?“Other than soccer I am very involved with my high school. I am the Student Body President, and am also on the Principal’s Advisory Council and the Superintendent’s Council. I also go to Waxhaw United Methodist Church and am part of their youth group.”

Knowing that you have committed to Furman University, what are your expectations for next year? “Next year’s personal expectations are hard to already have planned out. Until then I want to continue to keep getting better and go in to Furman and challenge the other goalies.”

The defense was led by Parker Blake and Da-vid Perry. The group used mul-tiple fronts and coverages and relied on all 11 players to make big plays.

On offense, Clay Norris showed why he is considered one of the top middle school quarter-backs in the area. Zach Demo-poulus and Demetrius McGill made huge plays for the Cougars all season long.

Many of the Cougar players played on a South Park Falcons Jr. Pee Wee team that won the Pop Warner Optimist Bowl two years ago for Carmel assistant coach Roger Purgason. They remained together and helped form a solid nucleus for this

years team. Coach Purgason is also a Carmel alumnus, adding to his excitement for the ac-complishment.

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Carmel Middle School Football for their hard work and undefeated season!

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT

Seventeen year old Charlotte Catholic High School junior Mark Harrell is working hard to wrap up a very successful season on the football field. The son of Hayden and Carol Harrell plays tight end and offensive tackle for Coach Jim Oddo. Mark and his teammates will play in the state champi-onship semi final game on Friday night. Let’s go beyond the game with Mark Harrell.

When did you first begin to play football and what are your earliest memories of playing?“I first began playing organized football in the 6th grade at Holy Trinity middle school, where I got to run the ball; something I do not get to do now”

How has your season gone this year at Charlotte Catholic?“Our season this year has gone great, we were undefeated in the regular season and are still going in the State tournament. Everyone on the team gets along well and is working hard, and as a result we have been producing wins”

What are your top three athletic accom-plishments?“My top 3 athletic accomplishments probably are: playing varsity football and varsity basket-ball as a sophomore; playing in the AAU (16 and under) basketball state championship last year; and being invited to participate in the 2011 U.S Army National Combine in San Antonio.”

What is the key for the Cougars to continue to advance in the playoffs this year?“The key for the Cougars to keep advancing in the playoffs is to continue doing what we have been do-ing all year….focusing on the basics, practicing hard and playing with intensity.”

Do you have an interest in playing college football, and have you received any interest? “Yes I do, and yes, Duke recently made me an offer and a few other ACC schools have shown interest.“

This year has seen a rebirth in Catholic foot-ball, after having some ok records the last couple of seasons. This team seems intent on getting back to the level of play from three or four years ago, what has been the key?“I think the key to getting back on track was the hard work the team put in lifting and training dur-ing the off season, practicing hard every week with each player focusing on his job, and just refusing to let up on game days.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? I make A’s and B’s and I am taking 3 honors classes. I am in the Fellowship of Christian Ath-letes and the Special Olympics Club at school. My older brother got me involved in Camp SOAR (Spe-cial Olympic Athletic Retreat) and I am looking forward to volunteering for that again next year.

The Charlotte Soccer Academy 12U Rhinos are composed of four return-ing players from last Spring’s team that surprised everyone by making it to the tournament final. The Rhinos were joined by eight newcomers. Early on the girls blended together nicely to form a cohesive team. Their hard work, focus and hustle resulted in an undefeated (8-0) regular season in which they outscored their opponents 42-9.

Coach Adam Pyles said, “The thing I am most proud of is their character. Al-though they have defeated a number of teams by five or more goals, they re-mained good sports – never taunting or mocking other teams. Their spirit and confidence grows with each win. They have been a joy to coach and I have enjoyed every minute of it.”

With this successful junior career, Devan caught the eyes of college coaches. Most of the interest came from smaller schools. While she had nothing against those schools, Devan wanted to play for a larger school. She went to work marketing herself in hopes of gaining a larger opportunity.

“Recruiting was a stressful process and I could not have done it without the help of my Dad. He di-rected me as to where to find the emails of coaches, what teams I should looks at, and the research I needed to do to see if a school was the right fit for what I wanted. I created a standard letter about me, my achievements, from academics to golf, along with my goals and aspirations to play collegiate golf and sent it to specific college coaches.”

“When I contacted Coach Williams at East Caro-lina, he seemed hesitant at first. However, when he had the chance to watch me play in a tournament this past summer at Pine Needles in Pinehurst, I was able to show him my golf ability by having 3 pars and a birdie on the holes he watched! Coach Williams and I both agree I have untapped potential that will be further realized with his coaching and the struc-ture of college athletics.”

Devan is excited about becoming a Pirate.“I love that it is a big school with lots of oppor-

tunity for growth academically and ECU appreci-ates athletics. I wanted the “full college experience” which included a school with a football team and a school spirit to support all athletes . When I had the chance to go to ECU for my official visit, I got to see the NC State vs. ECU game. The spirit and enthusi-asm shown by the students was exciting and fun! In addition, the girls on the team were all very welcom-ing, kind and enjoy being Lady Pirate golfers. The

opportunities presented to them are awesome—from academics, to three course to play and practice, to traveling for golf to places such as Las Vegas, Chi-cago, and Orlando. I couldn’t be more ready! I also loved the campus. There’s a nice mixture of old and new buildings with growth continuing everywhere, beautiful trees, lots of green, and it felt big but very manageable. Last but very important, ECU offers the major I want to study, nursing. With a working hospital that coordinates with the school, I’m very excited to get to ECU!”

Coach Kevin Williams is also excited to have De-van on board his Pirate Ship.

“Devan has a lot of raw ability with the game and we are very excited to see how her game will prog-ress in our program. She is very athletic and mak-ing some nice strides with her game. Once her golf experience and athletic ability match up, Devan will make a wonderful impact on our program. In addi-tion to being a talented golfer, Devan is a wonderful student as well.”

Coach Williams is correct, Devan does succeed in the classroom with a 4.03 grade point average in all honors and AP classes. She also enjoys volunteering and giving back to our community and others. Devan has taken a mission trip to New Orleans for a week to help rebuild the city. She has provided assistance at the local public radio station, WFAE 90.7fm/NPR answering phones and recording pledges

Devan also spends time organizing “Hot Shots” in her neighborhood.

“Hot Shots is a group my friend and I created for a group of young girls, ages 8-11, to gather, run a mile for exercise, play games and have a reflection time. At the culmination of the program, we ran a 5K

together. I believe this is very important for the girls because it gives them a chance to let off steam, meet other girls in the neighborhood, and show them ex-ercise is “cool” and healthy for them, all while build-ing self esteem.”

The South Charlotte Sports Report salutes Devan Murphy for being an active teenager and reaching her goal of playing college golf. Devan will continue to improve and become a successful student-athlete at East Carolina University.

THE Q SHACK COACH OF THE WEEKMARGARET LYNCHArdrey Kell High School Athletic Trainer Margaret Lynch may not be called a coach by the hundreds of students she pro-vides treatment to, yet she has provided guidance and support to area high school athletes for many years. Margaret was the first athletic trainer at Ardrey Kell High School and many student athletes have been fortunate to have her expertise keep them on the field. Prior to joining Ardrey Kell, Margaret worked at Providence High School, also providing great ad-vice and treatment. For her hard work, she has been named The Q Shack Coach of the Week. Margaret Lynch will leave the high school trainer field this

month to pursue a new career of becoming a physician assistant. She will attend PA School in Virginia, as she chases a personal goal she set many years ago. We wish Margaret the very best and hope she returns to area in two years to con-tinue helping area student athletes.
