In 2002 the Pan South African Language Board did a national sociolinguistic survey and the following findings were made with regard to English:•Use of language in interaction with supervisors: 40% •Language of tuition in the wider educational setting: 80% •Only 22% fully understand political, policy and administrative related speeches and statements made in English.•In terms of other languages, the levels of understanding of English are:
