from ‘ground zero’, an olive grove returns to lifeBushfire toll

“Seeing it for the first time took your breath away. You can’t imagine what it was like.”

Pam Brajevic remembers the hours after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires ripped through Barfold Olives, the grove she started with her husband George and son Jason in November 1999.

They lost 2500 trees, a processing shed, machinery and bottling equipment, oil supplies, cars, a house, and a second house under construction. This Friday will be the fifth anniversary of the devastating bushfires that killed 173 people in the state and destroyed more than 2000 homes.

The fire wiped out about 2500 trees, about 668 hectares of pasture and fencing at Kyneton Olive Oil and damaged about 2000 vines at Rupert’s Ridge winery in Redesdale.

Mrs Brajevic recalls that, being a Saturday, she was at the Daylesford farmers’ market and her daughter-in-law Sandra was alone at the family property.

“We don’t have good mobile coverage here and Sandra had the computer open keeping track of the bushfire when all of a sudden something flashed up on the screen,” she says.

Sandra could smell and see clouds of smoke travelling towards the back of the property. By the time she realised what was happening, she

them, with what she had on, nothing extra, and with a cat under her arm.”

Fleeing the fire, Sandra evacuated to Redesdale and later to Heathcote.

Mrs Brajevic left the market early and remembered the “winds being horrendous”.

They drove to Kyneton, where they were

thought she had only enough time to move her car.

“The next thing, there were boys from the Metcalfe Fire Brigade knocking at the door telling [Sandra] to get out quick smart.

“She had time to call us and tell us what was happening. She jumped in the truck with

living at the time, and bunkered down there for the night. The next morning they travelled to the grove to see what was spared.

“You can only imagine what you think you’ll see. It was like, wow, it was still smouldering. It was a real shock.”

But what was more shocking, she says, was when workers from a construction company conducted a clean-up.

“When they came with their trucks and movers, they flattened everything that was standing and took it all away.

“That was challenging; that got to me. It was like ‘ground zero’ after that.”

Gradually, the olive trees started growing back and in April 2011 the family had its first crop of olives since the fires.

And five years on, Mrs Brajevic says “everything’s back to normal”.

“We’re lucky in the way that we still have our life. It’s not hard to do the rebuilding.” \

BRiEfScandidate stands fast despite ‘outrage’ Macedon

The ALP candidate for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, claims she is “well supported” by the Labor Party despite public opposition against her.

A petition calling for her sacking has been circulated and signed by more than 85 per cent of Macedon ALP members.

The petition was organised by Macedon branch members following the preselection of Ms Thomas (pictured) ahead of former federal MP Christian Zahra, who received 81 per cent of votes taken in a local ballot.

The petition states that members are “outraged” with the decision, “which many believe is likely to prove disastrous for the party’s electoral prospects” in November.

Speaking to the Weekly last week, Ms Thomas defended her preselection.

“I’m sure Christian Zahra is a good candidate. But there was a preselection process conducted under the rules [of the Labor party] which I won.

“In the same way that David Feeney and I participated in the preselection process [for the seat of Batman] under the rules, he won,

and I fell in behind him in support of him. The real issue is about defeating the Liberals in November.

“That’s what I’m focused on.”The now-Kyneton resident hit back at

claims that she’s an “imported candidate”.“One of the things about the Macedon

Ranges is that it’s a part of Victoria that many people are moving to and choosing to live in.

“Like many people, I have chosen to move to the Macedon Ranges and there are

many constituents out there who have done exactly the same thing.”

Daylesford ALP branch president John Goullet said it was unheard of that Mr Zahra, a Trentham resident,

who had a high level of local branch support, was not endorsed.

“This candidate [Ms Thomas] should never have been forced on us against our wishes. She should resign immediately so that the party can try to recover the considerable electoral ground it’s lost as a result of this debacle.”

Liberal Party member and Sunbury resident Adrian Lodders said: “Even if Labor changes candidates in Macedon, the damage is done. The faceless men have shown it’s not about local representation.” \

kyneton flight planAirfield

Findings from community workshops about Kyneton airfield will be presented at a meeting on Thursday.

Macedon Ranges mayor Roger Jukes said the council had good feedback from residents regarding the opportunities and challenges of the airfield.

“This meeting is an opportunity for local residents to contribute to the recommendations ... so I encourage anyone with an interest in the airfield to get involved and attend,” he said.

Following the meeting, a draft paper will be developed and released for public comment in March. It will include “challenges and opportunities” of the airfield to determine its long-term future.

The council has previously come under fire for its lack of consultation.

A Kyneton resident who wants to remain anonymous told the Weekly last week that residents had no faith in council’s consultation processes.

“The council seems to think that by people submitting their concerns and those concerns being ignored, that is consultation,” she said.

Last week, council announced it was moving forward with a strategy to improve its communications with residents. \

school camPaign targets state pollKyneton

Friends of Kyneton Education have set their sights on the November state election in a bid to secure funding for the Kyneton education plan.

The plan, devised in 2007, was a proposal to co-locate the kindergarten, primary and secondary college on the one site, using vacant land next to the secondary college. A modern K-12 school was proposed.

But after a feasibility study and community consultation, and with a development plan drawn up, the project remains unfunded.

Now the Education Department has removed four portable classrooms, which formed the junior complex of the secondary college. The department maintained the portables were surplus to the school’s needs but would help growing schools in other areas.

The school community had spent $100,000 from the school’s budget on maintaining the portables, and Friends group spokeswoman Lisa Ohlmus said the money had essentially been poured down the drain.

“It’s another kick in the teeth for a school feeling like it’s been left in the lurch,” she said.

“Kyneton is growing and lots of new families are moving here attracted by what the town has to offer. A first-class education in a public school should be part of that offering.

“We want our political leaders to know education is a key issue for the district and we want the Kyneton education plan funded if they are to win our vote.” \ AV

crews fly in to help fireys in heatwaveGisborne

Residents are being warned to brace for more high temperatures and fire risks – and there’s no relief in sight.

Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said last week the state had moved to the critical part of the fire season.

“Victoria is heading into a severe heatwave from Friday that is likely to last at least seven days with no rain forecast.”

Incident management staff from Queensland arrived in Gisborne on Friday to help volunteers with operations in the Gisborne Incident Control Centre.

The centre is activated on severe fire danger days.

CFA Loddon Mallee regional commander Mark Gilmore said about six staff from Queensland would help volunteers in Gisborne and provide respite.

“Currently Gisborne is managed by volunteers and these people leave work sometimes for several days in a row. After many weeks some of these volunteers have been working a lot,

and this will provide some respite, in what is probably halfway through the summer.

“The volunteers are working hard and the half a dozen or so people from Queensland will help them continue their work.”

A total of 120 people from Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand will help in the region in firefighting and support roles for one month of the forecasted extreme fire danger period.

The Macedon Ranges recorded 40-plus temperatures for four consecutive days last week.

Malmsbury CFA members were still dousing hot spots and flareups on Friday from a fire that started near the Kyneton-Metcalfe Road in Greenhill, east of Malmsbury on Australia Day.

The fast-moving grassfire, allegedly ignited by a motorcycle being ridden in a paddock, resulted in an emergency warning for residents in Malmsbury and burnt more than 100 hectares and engulfed fences and farm sheds.

Fire crews worked to save houses in the area. \

Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell is calling for expressions of interest from people wanting to join the community consultative committee (CCC) to advise on the separation of Sunbury from Hume municipality.

The state government agreed in November that Sunbury could leave Hume and announced a panel would be formed to recommend boundaries.

Members of the panel are due to be named this month.

They will work alongside Hume council and make recommendations on the secession issue.

Mrs Powell said the new community committee would give advice directly to the panel on matters the locals believed should be investigated and considered.

“The committee will be able to refer issues to the panel for investigation, including possible boundary suggestions, distribution of assets and delivery of municipal services,” she said.

She said the CCC would be chaired by Northern Victoria MP Amanda Millar and would comprise as many as eight community volunteers.

“The CCC will strengthen and complement the work of the Sunbury local government panel.”

Expressions of interest for the CCC close on Monday, February 17, and appointments will be announced by the end of the month. \

ranges, sunbury spending tops $26mpoker machines

More than $26 million was spent in gaming machines in Sunbury and Macedon Ranges last year, new figures show.

But residents spent less than the previous year.Sunbury gamblers spent $17.8 million last year, down

from $19.3 million the previous year. In the Macedon Ranges, poker machines collected $8.7 million last year, compared to $9.3 million in 2012.

The data, from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, shows that Gisborne’s Victorian Tavern raked in $5 million from its 42 machines last year. It collected the most money out of the three venues in the Macedon Ranges.

In Sunbury, the Olive Tree Hotel collected $5.7 million across its 43 machines last year – the most out of five gaming venues.

Although spending is down, Victorian Greens spokeswoman on gambling Colleen Hartland says a $1 bet limit should be placed on the state’s poker machines, limiting losses to a maximum of $120 an hour.

“This would make a huge difference to Victorian families suffering from the detrimental impacts of problem gambling,” she said.

“Financial stress, job loss, family breakdown, crime, depression, and suicide are some of the worst impacts of problem gambling.” \

It is one of five landcare groups in Macedon Ranges that are sharing more than $250,000 announced under the government’s Communities of Nature program last week.

Upper Campaspe Landcare received $57,800 and Tylden got $20,000. The Campaspe River and Land Management Group and Lerderderg region Scouts received about $10,000 each.

Newham and District Landcare member Penny Roberts said the funding would help volunteers carry out conservation and enhancement works.

Their name of the project, the Campaspe-Maribyrnong headwaters biolink, refers to a network of native vegetation linking Cobaw State Forest and Macedon Regional Park.

Mrs Roberts said vegetation in the area was protected by a planning overlay and was recognised in the Macedon Ranges council natural environment strategy.

“Hanging Rock is an important node of remnant vegetation within the biolink,”

she said. “This link is something we’ve been pushing at, plugging away and getting grant money for ... it’s such an important thing to be doing. Hanging Rock is the key area in the project.”

Northern Victoria MP Amanda Millar said community groups should be congratulated on their initiatives and commitment to the environment. \

Darren Attard fits the profile of the typical Sunbury patient

suffering from a sports injury, says Eddy Cattapan, regional manager and sonographer at Lake Imaging in Sunbury. In his 40s, Attard has a desk-bound job and likes to play a bit of sport on weekends. When muscle pain and climbing stairs became a problem, he visited his GP who sent him to Lake Imaging radiology. They pinpointed the problem, then administered a carefully targeted cortisone injection.Within days Darren said: “I am feeling like my old self and planning to play again in the veteran’s team at Banyule Cricket Club soon”. “Treatment of injuries such as Darren’s have become much more effective thanks to advanced ultrasound equipment,” Cattapan explains. “They provide very clear images that enable our on-

site radiologists to ensure the cortisone goes exactly where it’s needed. “In comparison, earlier machines and smaller portable devices are much less accurate and it’s not uncommon for poorly targeted injections to make injuries worse”. It’s a rapidly changing science so Lake Imaging recently upgraded 30 of their machines following a “scan-off” to compare the latest brands. The staff unanimously chose the ones now being used. Lake Imaging recommends discussing treatment of sports injuries with a GP.

Lake Imaging, at 10 Spavin Dr (corner Riddell Road), Sunbury, opens 8.30am-6pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 8.30am-7.30pm, Wednesdays; 9am-1pm, Saturdays. Inquiries: 9744 5344 or visit www.lakeimaging.com.au

Buying a home is an exciting time, and often not as difficult as it may seem. All you need is a little

information.

You need three basic things to purchase a home: stable income, good credit and some savings. If you are

lacking in one area, don’t worry; with a little effort, you can find a solution.

For example, if you’re cashed up, your income and credit may not matter as your loan needs are

minimal. Get a loan preapproval, and you are a quick, easy transaction to the seller and your offer will be

attractive.

You may be in the opposite situation. You could have a good income and excellent credit, but little cash

saved. Many loan programs, especially those for first-time homebuyers, offer low down payments. You

may have to pay for private mortgage insurance, but it is worth it to be able to purchase a home.

There are ways to purchase a home, no matter your situation. If you have a questionable credit rating,

you can still find lenders out there willing to grant you a mortgage even if your interest rate is in

marginally higher as you are more risky to the lender. You can refinance your mortgage in a few years,

when your credit has improved.

Look into all of your options when considering purchasing a home.

If we at Dunlop Real Estate can assist you with any real estate matter, feel free to call me, John Dunlop

on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

february 4, 2014 \ sunbury & macedon ranges weekly 11

It started as a tiny condemned cottage with the surrounding 1.29 hectares choked with blackberry bushes. That all changed as owners Elisabeth

and Jimmy took on the task of turning a sow’s ear into a silk purse – and it’s proven an astonishing success. The intelligence, beauty and indeed bravery of design, the allocation of space and stunning decor deliver a house worthy of high praise.

Painted a lovely seaside blue trimmed with white, the original cottage with modified footprint cleverly links with a double-storey, American-style Colorbond barn transformed

into utterly stylish, well insulated living and sleeping spaces. This translates into an architectural triumph and a perfect counterpoint to its outdoor beauty.

Painted timber wall linings are a unique interior statement throughout, with the mostly used warm-white complementing richly grained, glossy hardwood floorboards and simple but classy window dressings.

The cottage’s entry point, the front rooms – one a sitting room with wood heater set in a fireplace and the other a study – warmly celebrate the past, while the spacious kitchen-meals-living area behind creates an eclectic/contemporary vibe. Wooden kitchen cabinetry,

given a Porter paint treatment in cream, has concrete benchtops, and an Ilve gas cooker with stainless-steel splashback sits inside an old fireplace; there’s also a dual-drawer dishwasher. The next-door laundry has a bespoke recycled timber trough cupboard and opens to a bathroom with pedestal basin and clawfoot bath.

Large, bold and beautiful, the L-shaped family-meals zone has two sets of bevel-paned french doors to a covered deck with leafy outlook. Next is the 14-step, glossy-boarded stairway/gallery which is the link to a huge, concrete-floored living room with access to another covered concrete deck.

Three ultra-stylish, carpeted bedrooms and slate-floored contemporary bathroom rim the living room, with a central wrought-iron spiral staircase ascending to an amazing main bedroom. Whether it’s the Murano glass chandelier, the bank of windows, the covered balcony, the chic en suite or the glam fitted dressing room that gets top billing, this sleeping space is an absolute cracker.

Paved sitting areas, an open pergola, a lily pond and wonderful cottage blooms make the outdoors as welcoming as the house, which befits a glossy-mag piece on interior decorating. \

CDCAAll matches in the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association were postponed after the association’s heat policy was enacted. The matches have been reduced to one-day games to be played this Saturday. \

GDCAMacedon is well-placed to sneak into fourth place in B grade after day one of round 12. Macedon rolled winless St Anthonys for just 67, with Daniel Trotta (4-24) and Mitch Graham (3-13) doing most of the damage. Macedon passed the total just two wickets down and reached 4-176 at stumps, with Murray Davis 62 not out. \

GDCASunbury United needs to win to prevent the side tumbling from the B grade top four. United was bowled out for 135, with Ricky Hay (51) and Steve James (46) the only batsmen to reach double figures. In reply, Gisborne had reached 0-44 from 24 overs. Keeper Chris Robinson and Daniel Trevillian are both 21 not out. \

GDCAEast Sunbury will resume at 1-19 this Saturday chasing C-grade ladder leader Ashfield’s 125. Ashfield couldn’t establish solid partnerships and only late runs from Matt Bulluss (25) and Nathan Anderson (26) got them into three figures. Mark Wilkins (11) and Liam Sherlock (3) are not out. \

BRiEfSkyneton sweats on resultsbowls

A 34-shot victory over winless Gisborne has Kyneton within 10 points of the top four in division 1 of the Central Highlands Bowling Division.

With two home-and-away games to play, Kyneton, fifth, has six wins and 121 points, trailing Kyneton Golf, fourth, by 10 points and 36 shots.

Kyneton got the jump on Gisborne early on Saturday and never looked back as three-rink winners, 107-73.

Scott Paterson’s rink did most of the damage, winning 33-12. Alex Stewart’s rink prevailed 25-20, and Craig Vincent won 28-17. Wayne Turner was the only struggler for the afternoon, narrowly losing 21-24.

Kyneton chairman of selectors Keith Reaper said the club’s finals campaign would depend on other results.

“The last few weeks we’ve bowled fairly well so it’s good we’re getting momentum at the end of the year,” he said.

“But we have to keep winning and rely on Kyneton Golf getting beaten. If they get beaten we can make it [to the finals], but we are relying on other teams.

“We jumped Gisborne from the start and kept it going from there. We were never behind at any stage.”

Just three points separate the top three teams. Bacchus Marsh leads the way on 152; Woodend is next on 151 followed by Lancefield on 150.

Woodend could take the top spot in coming weeks. It had a 44-shot win against Trentham on Saturday, moving its shot differential to plus-256 – more than 100 better than nearest rival Bacchus

Marsh.Woodend jumped into second place after Lancefield suffered a shock 45-shot loss to Romsey.

It was Romsey’s fourth win of the season.

Kyneton Golf’s match with Bacchus Marsh wasn’t played

because of the heat policy and both teams were awarded nine points.

In division 2, all teams were awarded nine points and, again, no matches took place. Kyneton leads the table by 16 points with almost a plus-200 in shot differential.

In division 3, Kyneton Blue secured its third win of the season, beating Gisborne by three rinks, 83-58. Trentham beat Woodend by two rinks, 85-57. \

woodend up for big chasemcintyre cup

Woodend must chase down 239 if it is to remain in finals contention in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.

Playing Bacchus Marsh, Woodend will front up at Maddingley Park this Saturday in its bid to close the gap to fourth-placed Sunbury United, 10 points ahead.

Woodend captain Brett Gardner is not disheartened, saying his men played impressively on Saturday given the heat and fast outfield.

“I said to our guys if we could keep them under 250 it would be a really good effort,” he said.

Woodend started impressively and could have been chasing a smaller total but for two early dropped catches, one off opener Tom McColl, the other off Bacchus captain Scott Wakefield.

McColl did little damage, making only 13, but Wakefield hit 29. The other opener, Peter Lalor, hit 30 and second drop Kieran Atkin added 41, giving Bacchus Marsh a good foundation.

The wickets of Wakefield and Justin Macdonald (17) got Woodend back in the game at 5-135, but handy late runs from James Bailey (37 not out) and Andrew Dickinson (23) helped Bacchus to 9-238 after 80 overs.

Eighteen-year-old Tom Robson picked up 4-61 from 20 tireless overs, while Warren Else (3-78), Josh Eastley (1-32) and Greg Matthews (1-32) chimed in with key wickets.

It’s a solid total to chase, but Woodend has form, having reached 3-286 in the previous round against St Anthonys.

“At one stage they were 2-113 and it could have gotten away from us,” Gardner said.

“We had to keep working and it wasn’t getting any colder out there.

“We had good bowling plans and the way we bowled and were able to restrict them I was really happy with. We got wickets consistently after that.

“We’re just outside the four and if we want to play finals we have to run this total.” \

riddell moves in for the kill

mcintyre cup

Riddell will look for its second outright win of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association season, having already secured first innings points against Romsey in the McIntyre Cup.

Romsey, with just two wins for the season, enjoyed a reasonable start on Saturday after winning the toss and batting.

Wicketkeeper Matt Burkett, coming off his maiden GDCA ton in the previous round against Sunbury United, and James Williams saw off the new ball but were soon out for 16 and 19 respectively.

From there it was largely a procession.

Danny Fortune (20) was the only other batsman to pass five as the Riddell bowlers ripped through Romsey.

Eight extras bumped an embarrassing total up to 77 from 33.3 overs. Daniel Fisk snared 4-16 from five overs and captain Heath Wadden took 4-21 from 12.

In reply, the early wicket of Luke Castle for 11 was the only bit of joy for the Romsey bowlers.

Brendan Alger (66) and Hayden Castle (56) took Riddell past the total for the loss of that single wicket.

Castle, just 17, is in great form. He started the season playing with

Footscray Edgewater’s second XI but moved back to Riddell after four games.

He has 661 runs from nine innings at an average of 132.2.

Not once this season has he failed to get a start.

Riddell will resume this Saturday on 3-165. \ dp

sunbury derby on a knife edgemcintyre cup

The two-day match between Sunbury and Sunbury United in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup is evenly poised.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, United was dismissed for 111 in 57.2 overs.

Adam Smith did his best to anchor the innings, facing 118 balls for a painstaking 29, but there was little support.

Andrew Powell (25) and James Hughes (15) got decent starts but were stifled by the Sunbury bowlers.

Jason McGann, who sent down 19 overs for 3-40, was well supported by Heath Boffey (2-21 from 14), Ray Davis (2-14 off 11) and Brad Hunter (2-16 from 8.2).

Sunbury, second on the table, lost the early wicket of Stephen Treweek for two, but opener Kel McInness (23) and

first drop Paul Webber (38) put on 61 for the second wicket.

Sunbury was travelling comfortably at 1-67 when United made a double bowling change, bringing on Jarrod Potter, who had Webber and Michael Treweek (0) dismissed leg before, while Andrew

Powell picked up McInness lbw. Potter has 2-4, Powell 1-4 and Hughes

1-28. Sunbury will resume at 4-69. \ dp
