    When youre anxious and depressed, its hard to harness the mental energy needed to regain a positive perspective. But if youre seeking a proven method to manage these states of mind without resorting to pharmaceuticals and psychotherapy, theres a refreshingly simple, and cost-effective answer. And nowadays, you dont have to be rich, religious, esoteric or buy into a celebrity-endorsed organisation to gain all the benefits of incorporating the practice of meditation into your busy lifestyle.Matt Young from Melbourne Meditation Centre says there are misconceptions regarding meditations methodology, due to the various ways organisations have marketed it to the public. In order to clear some confusion for beginners, Young suggests meditation could be thought of as an activity to relax the body and calm the mind. Though hes reluctant to limit it to just that, he suggests when we think of meditation in these terms, its a useful starting point to determine its immediate benefits. So is there a right way? Dont be fooled, he says. Its not a one-size-fits-all practice. A more useful question to ask would be what kind of meditation is better suited to me? You cant find this out unless

    you try a range of techniques and teachers.Some of these techniques pertain to breathing and chanting, posture, guided visualisation and relaxing the body part by part. Physical relaxation and mental clarity are the active ingredients in meditation. They

    are the building blocks that make meditation an effective way of developing a healthy relationship with your thoughts, says Young. Young explains for meditation to be effective, we neednt try to resist the full gamut of physical, mental and emotional experiences from arising during meditation and suggests we need to let go of the effort to banish our thoughts arising from agitation or restlessness and the urge to seek a silent refuge, fall asleep or reduce distractions.

    Per head of population, Australia has one of the highest participation rate in the world in sport. The benefits of sport and exercise are well documented, these include: the obvious physical benefits, positive benefits for the maintenance and improvement of mental health and the benefits of socialising with other participants or competitors.

    Unfortunately though, injuries in sport are often inevitable and unavoidable. As a consumer where do you start when you have an injury? Obviously a major injury will often require transportation to the ED of a large public hospital. A lesser injury requires thorough assessment by a suitably qualified medical practitioner, this would include a sports physician or sports physiotherapist or at least a practitioner who has a genuine interest in the management of sports injuries.

    An experienced Sports Physician or Physiotherapist is highly skilled in the management of injury. Their goal is to get the athlete back to their preferred mode of exercise as soon as it is safe to do so. Long periods of rest and inactivity after injury only leads to deconditioning of the rest of the body and increases the risk of further injury or returning to sport.

    Importantly too, Sport Physiotherapists have an extensive network of other specialists who they can refer to in the event of an athlete requiring surgery or more specialised medical attention.

    I have often been asked in my practice, if sports is really worth it given the injuries you might sustain. My answer is simple, I would rather deal with sprains and strains as a result of too much physical activity rather than have to deal with the consequences of cardiovascular disease as a result of inactivity.

    The up side of participation in sport far outweighs the down side of injury. If you have an injury, early assessment and management is the key to minimising damage and returning to your preferred activity.

    Properties with plenty of natural light are attracting price premiums as those with good natural light

    become more popular. Sunlight counts, especially in winter. Buyers look at the natural light qualities very

    differently today compared with several years ago, as higher energy costs make sensitivity to climate and

    reducing utility bills through the use of sensitive design much more acceptable. Alternate energy sources

    A residential land development coming soon to Romsey has generated unprecedented inquiry. John Dunlop from Dunlop Real Estate says almost 200 inquiries have been fielded in a few weeks for the first stage of the Lomandra estate, which will be released for sale this month. Dunlop says the estate, on the south western edge of town, will consist of more than 200 lots to be developed

    over the next three to five years. He says its appeal is large block sizes, excellent recreational facilities and attractive prices. The average lot size is more than 1000 square metres more than double the average lot size on Melbournes urban fringe. Secondly, Lomandra will have recreational facilities such as a mod-grass tennis court, half basketball court, Australian rules and soccer goals, playground and pavilion with barbecue facilities within the reserve. Thirdly, 800-square-metre blocks start at only $159,000. Other features of the estate include the availability of NBN high-speed internet, and a proposed builders display village on Melbourne Lancefield Road.     For some years it has been my contention that electronics are now so fast, so sophisticated and so reliable that their only limitation is our ability to

    think up new uses for them. Now Im coming around to the idea that were thinking entirely too much.

    Take the Q50, a new car from Infiniti (just as Lexus makes expensive Toyotas, Infiniti is Nissans premium brand). It has facial recognition, so when you climb in and settle behind the wheel the first thing youre greeted with is, well, a greeting. Just for you.

    Hello (insert your name here) it displays on one of its two LCD screens.

    Brrrr. Its a bit like Hal the rogue computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey saying Hello, Dave so smoothly immediately before consigning good old Dave to open space.

    Having got the niceties out of the way, the Q50 will then ensure the seat and mirrors are in your preferred positions, the climate control is set to where you like it, the satellite navigation is prepped to show you the way home, and lots more.

    It will dial in your preferred steering weight, decide whether you want the car in sport mode or comfort and how far away youd like to be from the car in front when you activate the cruise control. There are lots more things available if you can be bothered to enter all the parameters. If you can be, it will know if you prefer an ABC or QWERTY keyboard.

    It offers 96 selectable settings across 10 functions, and the possible permutations for your personal settings run into the billions. You are far more likely to find a suitable match here than in a lifetimes trawling of computer dating services.

    Then it all gets a bit cheesy. The Infiniti displays your favourite photographs of family and friends. Heaven help us. I have lots of favourite photographs but none of them of family and friends, so do I qualify? I guess Im just not touchy-feely enough for an Infiniti.

    The scary bit is the Q50 will do all this for four different people. That means that if your 18-year-old

    kid has borrowed the car, you wont be assailed by thrash metal at 110

    decibels next time you crank up the radio. Infiniti calls this

    My Car Knows Me but really, I wonder.

    There are days when I like to be addressed by my first name and days when I feel I deserve to be called sir.

    There are some days when a simple hey suffices.

    I know a guy who once did PR for BMW,

    and he would be mortified by a personal greeting from

    a car. He would immediately demand to know when and

    where he and that car had been formally introduced.

    Still, I guess the Infiniti approach is better than a few Mitsubishis Ive been in lately, all of which displayed an overly joyful See you! at journeys end.
