Mr.Sato, picturedatleft, isoneofthe main model builders of the ROPEandaverygood friendof theSMAwhoparticipated in the WSMC&E in 2011.Heisanexceptionalcraftsman.Theshipmodel he built is theBeaver of 1835 in

1/64scale,ascratchbuiltEnglishshiprequiring5yearsofeffort. Mr. Kenji Sato writes: “I brought a copy of Hudson’s Bay Company’s SSBeaver from Pier Books (now out of business) in New York for $50.00. It is amonograph (plans) of a steamship built in London in 1835 by Hudson’s BayCompany to explore the west coast of North America. The accompanying 21drawings(42sides)weresodetailedthatIthoughtitwasbeyondmyskillstomake.

However, a few years later, Ireally wanted to make a model withthese detailed drawings, so I tried tomake the deck fittings (scale 1/64).First,Imadethebinnacle.Ididn’thavealatheatthetime,soIsolderedseveraldifferentdiameterbrasspipes togetherandshapedthemwitharouterandafile(see second photo). Next, I made asteering wheel, a capstan, and awindlass and gradually became able tomakethemwell.

Next, I tried tomake the paddlewheels. Theringswerecutoutofbrasswith a jigsaw and the spokes weresolderedon. Now that the main fittings weremade, I was confident that I couldcompletetheprojectandstartedtobuildthehull. Thehull isplank-on-bulkheadtype, with a plywood frame andplanking, deck and rails made ofJapanese cypress, lime wood and pearwood. The paddlewheel bearings aremadeofbrasspipesembeddedandfixedwithepoxy.” The last photo below shows thepaddlewheel bearings and paddlewheelsinstalledonthemodel. Kenji Sato continues: “Thebulwark stanchions were comparedwith a right angle ruler to make sureevery stanchion was vertical. Thedeadeye chain was aligned with theshrouds by pulling strings from atemporarymast. Thismonographhasanumber of isometric views of the hulland fittingsso that thestructurecanbeclearly seen. Therefore, it was veryuseful for making paddle wheel boxes.Themakingtechniqueusedwastheplug(male)method, whichiscommonlyused

in open boatmaking and the plugwasdividedintothreeparts.” See photos of the proceduresMr.Satoisdiscussingaboveonthenextpage. Kenji Sato continues: “Aroundthis time I got a desktop lathe, whichmade it possible to cut thediameter ofthechimneyandventilatoraccordingto

thedrawing. Sparsweremadeof Japanesecypress,pearwood,Castillo-boxwood,etc.andjackstaysweremadeof0.3mmdiameterbrasswireandsteelwire.

The three ship’s boats were built using themethod devised by the seniormembers of the ROPE, “planking on bulkhead, then removing the bulkhead andattachingafakeframe.”Imadeeverythingbymyselfexceptforthedead-eye,block,chain and twistedmost of the ropes, so it took about five years from the start tocompletion.

The text explains that the crew quarters and cargo hold of the earlysteamshipswere severely limited because the steam engine occupied 40% of thehull.ItalsodescribesthefuelconsumptionoftheBeaverandrecordsthatin1836,six lumbermenmade ‘40 cords of firewood in two days. With this fuel, the shipcould run for 5 to 6 dayswith the engine running 12 to 14 hours a day going adistanceof230miles. I added40cordsof firewoodanda few figuresofmyownmaking to visualize howmuch firewood this was. I referred to the 19th centuryMississippisteamboatsphotostoseehowtostackthefirewood.”Seethelastphoto. ThismodelrepresentsagunboatgalleyoftheAmericanfleet.Thesegalleysmade a very important contribution to the American victory. Small but heavilyarmed they were extremely agile vessels and made possible extremely rapidmaneuvers. Equipped with a cannon and a carronade this gunboat is extremelyinteresting for its profile and for its sails, which show a marked Mediterraneaninfluence.
