December2018
Reporter:DonDressel The regularDecemberSMAmeetingwaswell attendedwith lotsof goodies toeatand drink along with 11 SMA modelers bringing in their models for discussion and aprogress report on theirworks inprogress. Lots of good information and shipmodelingtechniqueswerediscussed.
SwedishShipModelVasa–JohnBakker My apologies to John Bakker and thenext several ship model presenters, but I wasnotpayingattentionandforgottotakepicturesofthem!!!InJohn’scase,Iamshowingapictureof him from last month. John did present hiscurrentprogressontheSwedishwarshipVasa–a picture of the model is shown in theMayflower Group section of this newsletter. You will observe that he has already fullycompleted the first layer of planking – he hasonlyhadthemodelforonemonth! Vasa (or Wasa) is a retired Swedishwarshipbuiltbetween1626and1628.Theship

It fell intoobscurityaftermostofhervaluablebronzecannonweresalvagedinthe17th century until she was located again in the late 1950s in a busy shipping lane justoutsidetheStockholmharbor.Salvagedwithalargelyintacthullin1961,itwashousedinatemporarymuseumcalledWasavarvet (‘TheWasa Shipyard’) until 1988and thenmovedpermanentlytotheVasaMuseumintheRoyalNationalCityParkinStockholm.Theshipisone of Sweden’s most popular tourist attractions and has been seen by over 35 millionvisitorssince1961.Sinceherrecovery,VasahasbecomeawidelyrecognizedsymboloftheSwedish ‘great power period” and is today a de facto standard in themedia and amongSwedesforevaluatingthehistoricalimportanceofshipwrecks. TheshipwasbuiltonordersoftheKingofSwedenGustavusAdolphusaspartofthemilitary expansion he initiated in a war with Poland-Lithuania (1621-1629). It wasconstructedatthenavyyardinStockholmunderacontractwithprivateentrepreneurs in1626-1627andarmedprimarilywithbronzecannonscastinStockholmspecificallyfortheship. The order to sail was the result of a combination of factors. The king, whowasleadingthearmyinPolandatthetimeofhermaidenvoyage, assimpatienttoseehertakeup her station as flagship of the reserve squadron at Älvsnabben in the StockholmArchipelago.Atthesametimetheking’ssubordinateslackedthepoliticalcouragetoopenlydiscuss the ship’s problems or to have the maiden voyage postponed. An inquiry wasorganizedbytheSwedishPrivyCounciltofindthoseresponsibleforthedisaster, butintheendnoonewaspunished. During the 1961 recovery, thousands of artifacts and the remains of at least 15people were found in and around the Vasa’s hull by Marine Archaeologists. Among themanyitemsfoundwereclothing, weapons, cannons, tools, coins, cutlery, food, drinkandsixof the tensails.
