• Turning in someone else’s work as your own. • Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit. • Failing to put a quotation in quotation marks. • Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation. • Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source

without giving credit. • Copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up

the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not • To put it in a nut shell “plagiarism is ‘stealing’ the intellectual

material”.

What is plagiarism?

Quote: To quote is to reproduce, in your own written work, the precise words that someone else has written or spoken. So, a quotation (or ‘quote’) is the reproduction of original material within your work. Example: Smith (2004) states, ‘There is now strong evidence that engineering students are more likely to take-up MBA program than other graduates’ (p. 32).

Paraphrase: To paraphrase means to re-phrase or rewrite, in your own words, the words or ideas of others within your own written work. So, a paraphrase is the rephrased or rewritten material within your own work. Example: Smith (2004) notes that the engineering students opt for MBA Program than graduates from other discipline.

Reference: This word has three meanings, all of which are important. The first is a verb: to reference is to provide an acknowledgement, within your academic publication for using the words, ideas, that are not your own and belong to someone else. [in text reference] The second meaning is also a verb: to reference is to provide an acknowledgement, at the end of your assignment. [end text reference] The third meaning is a noun: Listing each of the original sources you have used in the publication for knowledge enhancement or reporting, it is collectively called a ‘Bibliography’.

Example: Generally engineering students opt for MBA program for higher education (Smith, 2004). [in text] Smith, William. (2004). What next to engineering?. New Delhi: AAA Publishers. [end text]

• Has I copied the content from elsewhere? If Yes, is it been fully acknowledged?

• Did I write the thoughts, ideas and findings of the work myself?

• If asked, am I in a position to summarize the work? • Can I explain the purpose, objective, methodology, findings

and scope for further research in this area? • Am I in the position to share information about core authors,

Search engines are popular tools for locating web pages, but they often return thousands of results.

Search of e-resources are more effective if you know how to talk to these retrieval engines.

Communicating with these systems requires knowing certain basic search techniques.

Page 26: Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for ...jssstuniv.in/.../Res.-methodology-workshop...IMD.pdf · Citing, Referencing, Bibliography • Citing Whenever you refer to another

What is Search Strategy?

• A search strategy is a structured organisation of terms used to search a database.

• The search strategy shows how these terms combine in order to retrieve the best results. Different databases work in different ways, so you need to adapt your search strategy for each of the databases you use. However, the basic searching techniques remains the same.
