The adrenalin will be pumping both on and off the track at the Royal Adelaide Show as the Toyota V6 HiLux Heroes return to the Main Arena with their world-class stunt show.

hilux heroes new recruit

Consisting of four of Australia’s

top motorsport drivers – Jack

Monkhouse, Dave Shannon, John

Boston and new recruit Ian Dyk –

the team perform their special blend

of high-octane stunts and formation

driving in front of millions of people

across Australia each year, driving at

major shows, motorsport events and

trade days.

In Adelaide they will be performing

a range of spectacular stunts,

including one in which the driver

balances the virtually standard

HiLux on two wheels and another

featuring an amazing 12-metre

ramp-to-ramp jump. Other stunts

include drifting, nose-to-nose

driving, reverse hand-break turn

flicks and high-speed crossovers –

where four of the vehicles drive

toward each other in an X formation.

Driving at his first Royal Adelaide

Show is 25-year-old Ian Dyk, who

has progressed through the ranks of

Go Karts, Formula Ford, Formula

Three, Porsche Carrera Cup and the

A1 Grand Prix. He’s one of only a

handful of drivers to have made the

grade to be a part of the precision

driving team and is looking forward

to the challenge.

“It’s an honour to be a part of this

great Australian tradition,” says Ian.

“Spectators watching the perform-

ance may think some of what the

team does is easy, but take it from

me it’s all hard work.”

Driving a slightly modified version of

Australia’s best selling ute, the stunt

vehicles have been beefed up in the

suspension department, have

modified exhaust systems and 16-

inch alloy wheels. Inside they’ve

been tailored with sports seats, racing

harnesses and a safety roll cage.

Lead driver Jack Monkhouse says the

vehicles have impressed the drivers.

“The fact we are still performing in

the original vehicles we launched

the team with in January 2008

demonstrates the quality and

unbreakable nature of the Toyota

HiLux,” says Jack.

See the Toyota V6 HiLux Heroes

nightly in the Main Arena at 8pm.

The man behind Dan the Music Man is Dan Burt, the One-Man

Band, who describes himself as a “variety artist, balloonologist,

musician and clown”.

It’s clear from the looks on the children’s faces how much the crowds

love him. With a humour that appeals to adults and children alike,

Dan started performing at the Royal Adelaide Show 28 years ago.

He remembers the early days carrying a huge marching drum around

on his back, working out of Alice the Volkswagen, which he still has,

hidden in a shed at home.

Over the years his act has evolved to become a roving show: a mixture

of the One Man Band; Dobbin the Wonder Horse – a fully animated

and flatulent puppet horse; balloons; gags and comedy routines.

Despite performing at many Shows around Australia, Dan says he still

finds the Royal Adelaide Show the “friendliest and best” Royal Show

in Australia.

“I find it a real honour to be frequently greeted by people who saw

me perform years ago – often as children – and they ask me to

entertain their kids now,” he says.

“We share stories about the Show and what we’ve been up to since we

last met, and they often ask to have their photograph taken with me.

“I feel very privileged to have had

such an impact on so many people

over the years.”

Dan will be performing his own brand

of “music and fun for the young and the

young at heart” each day of the Show

from 12pm to 2pm.

Amidst all the excitement and colour of the Royal Adelaide Show, over the years it’s been one timeless performer who consistently draws a crowd.

Grant Freeman, the state manager of

Howard and Sons Pyrotechnics, has

helped to put on the colourful display

for the past 18 years – and the Adelaide

company, established since 1922, has

been involved for about 60 years.

While tight-lipped about the intricate

details of this year’s display, Freeman

would say: “The design of the

fireworks show will be dramatically

different to any other year − we

guarantee that − and we hope that

with the joining together with the

music, people will not only be

entertained, but they’ll walk away

with that wow factor.” As well,

Freeman promises: “The beginning is

something that will amaze and the

finale will leave a real impact.”

While the display each night lasts ten

minutes, it actually takes four months

of planning and manufacturing the

fireworks effects to put on the nightly

displays in the Main Arena.

Thousands of fireworks are involved.

These include everything from aerial

shells, which rise into the air and

create magnificent colourful bursts, to

Roman candles, which eject one or

more stars or exploding shells.

Freeman says: “Some whiz, some

crackle and some do what we call

‘lion’, where they semi-roar when

they go out.”

Once the Show date arrives, a team of

about ten people help stage the fully

computerised show nightly. “Every

day, we bring down the fireworks

effects and then spend all day

preparing them onto the trailers,”

Freeman explains. “Then we get out

into the middle of the arena and do

our tests, so we’re ready to fire that

night. Following the fireworks display

each night, we clean all the trailers of

the debris and then return the next

day, with more fireworks, to do it all

over again.”

Working with explosives is a dangerous

business and Freeman admits “it can

be tedious and you’ve got to be

Cracker of a night This year’s fireworks at the Show are expected to be the most spectacular yet.

careful with what you do”, though

he wouldn’t be involved in any other

industry.

As for the usual debate about which

coloured fireworks go higher, Freeman

is quick to dispel any myths. “It all

depends on the effect. If people want

us to pick a colour, we usually say

‘blue’, but it really depends on how

the fireworks are packaged or how

much charge goes into it.”

The fireworks are on every night of the

Show at 9pm.

A full professional wrestling ring

will be set up to showcase the

best wrestlers from around the

country, including NWA Australian

Champion Robby Heart and ‘Jag’

Hartley Jackson. Special guest female

and international wrestlers will also

feature.

“Robby Heart is huge in Australia at

the moment, and this is a great

chance to see him in action before he

heads off overseas to other matches,”

says organiser, Rhiannon Clews.

“The events are for people of all

ages, and fun for the whole family.”

Fans will get the chance to meet the

stars after each show, and children

will be able to get photographs and

autographs. And photos of each

night’s action, along with event

results and upcoming matches, can

be seen on the NWA’s website –

www.nwapro.com.au

All the bone crunching, back-breaking action of the National wresting Alliance (NwA) will hit the Superstar Stage each night of the Royal Show this year.

The event will culminate in a huge

‘Royal Show Rumble’, where all

competitors will battle it out on the

last night of the Show for the Royal

Show Cup.

“The winner last year was Adelaide’s

own ‘Wreckin Ball’ Will Gibson,

who defeated 13 other wrestlers to

win,” says Rhiannon. “It was

spectacular!”

Matches will begin at 7.30pm each

evening, with each show lasting

around 45 minutes. Find the

Superstars Stage near the Western

Show entrance, close to the

Kingsway Food Court.

Down for the countIf you hear the loud sound of trumpets, drums and guitars

at this year’s Show, it will most likely be coming from

The Band of the South Australia Police. The full-time

band, established way back in 1884, will be performing

regularly at the Showground.

Drum major Sergeant Adam Buckley says he can remember

seeing the police band at the Show as a child and was rapt

to be involved this year. “We get to play to a lot of people

who may never have seen the band before or have only

had limited exposure.”

Audiences may be familiar with the band’s ceremonial

role at public events like the Christmas Pageant and the

ANZAC parade, but it’s also known for its unique, high-

energy displays.

There will be five free, daily, half-hour performances

at the Show, including a lunchtime parade. The

performances at the Goyder Pavilion will be at 10.15am

and 2.15pm at the Horticultural stage and at 11.30am

and 3.40pm at the SAPOL Stand, with the ‘parade of stars’

at 12.30pm.

The parade will start by the grandstand, head up to

the food court towards Goodwood Rd, then return

back via the Dairy Pavilion, ending at the grandstand again.

Sargeant Buckley reckons Show-goers won’t be able to miss

them: “We’re a pretty big noise coming towards people!”

The musical outfits on show will range from a four-person

ensemble to an 18-piece band, with music styles

encompassing everything from TV show themes to funky,

Aretha Franklin-style ditties. Instruments being heard will

include the trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, flute, drum,

bass guitar, and voice.

The band, which shot to fame in 1990 with an appearance

at the famed Edinburgh Tattoo, will also have CDs available

at special prices at the Show.

The popular fabric and costume artist

will be back at the Royal Adelaide

Show for her third consecutive year with

a stunning new production, Naughty

By Nature.

Based in the New Zealand city of

Christchurch, which suffered a

devastating earthquake earlier this year,

Jenny says 2011 has been “a year from

hell” for the team behind the

production.

“In our Adelaide performances I will be

trying to establish a balance between

pathos and humour which reflects our

experiences but also projects our hope

for the future,” she says.

“A new theme for this year’s show will

be the inclusion of some common

garden pests, who will get up to

humorous antics in my ‘garden’ of

delight, beauty and hilarity. I am also

delighted to welcome some more

Australian dancers to my team

in 2011.

“As well as the live performances

I will also have a large static display

featuring a variety of ‘rose’ and ‘peony

rose’ creations, which provides a great

opportunity for the audience to

appreciate the intricate workmanship of

my costumes and floral creations.”

Jenny Gillies’ Naughty By Nature

will show five times daily

(four on Sunday)

in the Goyder

Pavilion.

Stunning gillies floral creations return in 2011wild, wicked and wonderful blooms will be the theme of the fabulous Jenny Gillies performances at this year’s Show.

Each year David Chadwick from The Teddy Bear Corner at

Goodwood sees the same smiling faces come back to his

stands at the Royal Adelaide Show. More often than not they’re

in search of the latest Beanie Kid to add to their collection.

“We’re known as the Beanie Kids people,” he says, referring to

the plush-toy collectible that has become a hit with children

around the world.

“For many families it’s become a tradition to visit our stand and

we’ve watched little kids become big kids over the ten years we’ve

been at The Show.”

As well as offering a full range of Beanie Kids, David’s two stands

– one in the Jubilee Pavilion and one in Show bag Hall – sell a

selection of teddy bears, the BK Show bag and Webkins Show bag.

“This year we are also offering a Nooks Show bag, which

is a new collectable coming onto the marketplace.”

According to David, The Show

is the ideal way to promote his

business due to the high

volume of people that come

through the gates.

“The Show is our biggest

promotional event for the

year – it takes three weeks for

us to put everything together.

“But the expressions and joy

on the children’s faces makes

it all worthwhile.”

Since 1988, the Yellow Brick Rd.

has been one of the Show’s most

popular components − almost as

magical to Show-goers as that

discovered by Dorothy in The Wizard

of Oz.

On payment of $10, patrons receive

a map and re-useable carry bag and

can then follow their nose around

the trail’s 13 stops, collecting healthy

treats along the way.

Bob Snewin, who has been on the

Yellow Brick Road committee since

the beginning, says: “The original

idea for it was to support local

agriculture, but it has also always

been about healthy eating and

covering the five food groups.”

Each year, up to 20,000 bags are

snapped up by trail-goers, with a

total of 18,600 bags being handed

out last year. It’s a big jump from the

early days of filling up just 5000 bags

per Show.

Snewin says the growing popularity

of the trail makes sense. “People

recognise it as a good value bag –

Follow the Yellow brick Rd The Yellow Brick Road is the ‘passport’ to healthily tracking your way around the Royal Adelaide Show.

particularly parents with young ones

− and they see it as good eating. You

can get double the value in food for

what you pay.”

The trail can take a couple of hours

to complete, though there’s no need

to go from start to finish. Show-goers

can get started on the trail, then

meander off to do something

else, before re-joining it again –

whatever suits.

Over the years, the product mix has

changed, depending on the

availability, ranging from hard-

boiled eggs to bags of pasta.

This year Yellow Brick Roaders can

pick up everything from a ‘go-gurt’ (a

kids’ yoghurt, which can be squeezed

out of the tube directly into the

mouth, rather than using a spoon) to

a loaf of bread, an orange, carrots, a

fruit roll-up and a muesli bar.

Sign up for the Yellow Brick Road at

five major selling sites at the Show:

the entrances at Goodwood Road,

Leader Street and Rose Terrace,

and at the Dairy Food Hall.

s h o w b a g s

Start your Yellow Brick Road journey at any of the Show entry gates.

Simply look for one of the Yellow Brick Rd. booths so you can purchase your map and bag for just $10 and start collecting some great healthy treats. Do your bit for the enviroment – if you bring back your Yellow Brick Rd. bag from any previous year’s Show, we’ll give you 50¢ off the cost of your new bag.

Purchase of the Yellow Brick Road Showbag includes a copy of The Advertiser or Sunday Mail.

From humble beginnings at the

Show in 1987 Charlesworth now

sells about 35,000 Showbags or

around 40 tonnes of nuts, fruits and

chocolate during the nine days of

the Show – about 15 times more

than the first year.

At this year’s Show they’ll be selling

four bags – the Insatiable ($30),

Chocaholic ($20), Executive ($16)

and Variety ($10).

Joint CEO and third generation

family member Brett Charlesworth

revealed the secret to this

overwhelming success: “It’s really

simple. We just set out to make our

Showbags chock-a-block full of

Charlesworth products, with no

added gimmicks or novelties, and

then sell them at a heavily

discounted price. In other words,

old-fashioned show bags the way

they were meant to be.”

“We believe the Show is all about

family and having fun and I

guarantee if you visit our stand

you’ll see that our Show Team

certainly live up to this,” he said.

“We select people who love the fast

pace and energy of the Show and

they have an absolute ball, which is

great for our customers.”

As an added bonus for South

Australia the products are made at

Charlesworth Nuts’ Marion factory

and packed into show bags by a

dedicated Show Team.

Charlesworth Nuts has been a South

Australian family business since

1934 and is a member of the Family

Business Hall of Fame in recognition

of its iconic status.

NEW!

A LITTLE LUXURY

Page 28: Show Magazine 2011 part 2

j u dgi ng progr a m

Five years ago the concept of

LandAid was born when a

brave and proud family, uprooted

from a farm they couldn’t even

sell, arrived at the door of one of

our directors with but what their

ute would carry.

This prompted the director to ask

‘Why?’. Why was so little being

done to avoid such tragedies?

Why had no one taken the first

step to look after rural

communities – our country’s very

bedrock – in the throes of disaster?

The strength and pride of this

family inspired a few good people

to take that first step, becoming

LandAid. We then took the next

step… and the next… finally

arriving where we are today – at

the launch pad – committed to

helping rural communities look

after themselves and their own

when hard times happen.

At this year’s Royal Show, LandAid

launches nationally, announcing

our presence and commitment to

helping unify, restore and perpetuate

rural communities ravaged by fire,

flood, drought, earthquake or social/

economical disasters. Sponsored by

the Adelaide Showgrounds and the

generosity of organizations and

individuals sharing LandAid’s vision

and mission, we begin interacting

with the public, interfacing and

listening to the unique needs and

concerns of all rural and local folks

stopping by our booth.

Along with collecting and

exchanging information, we will be

showcasing programs LandAid

already has underway aimed at

helping rural communities glean

prudent support and information.

These programs include: a unique

rural linking service called

‘MatesLine’, and aid in sourcing

appropriate grants possibilities

(‘GrantSource’) for all things

‘community’ in nature.
