WHO IS DAVID LYNCH?• Born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana. He spent his childhood

travelling throughout the Northwest and from an early age he had become interested in painting and drawing wanting to pursue it as a career.

• Originally planning to be an artist, Lynch attended Corcoran School of The Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA).

• While attending PAFA he became more interested in filmmaking and photography and there he created his first short film which he entered a competition where he won first prize. This got him valuable exposure as he was given prize money and then commissioned to create more films.

• Whilst studying Lynch struggled to support his family and other costs, therefore he moved to a inexpensive neighborhood of high crime and poverty rates "We lived cheap, … the fear was so intense. There was violence and hate and filth. But the biggest influence in my whole life was that city."

HIS STYLE/ RECURRING THEMES IN HIS WORK

V. Heavy imagery and symbolism

MULHOLLAND DR. 2001

About an actress who moves to LA and befriends a woman who broke into her aunt’s house and has amnesia (memory loss) because of a car wreck . It includes many subplots that seem unrelated but eventually connect in various ways as the women search for clues and answers across LA in a strange and twisting venture.

BLUE VELVET 1986

A mystery-thriller about a college student who happens to stumble upon a human ear in a field. He decides to investigate after police prove ineffective and ends up uncovering dark secrets underneath his hometown’s picture-perfect appearance and he is soon drawn into a dangerous drama.

Like most I didn’t actually initially like the film’s plot and overuse of strange sexual and violent scenes, however I found the subtle use of symbolism showing the themes of the "disease" lying just under the surface of the small town very impressive. The most consistent symbolism

in the film is an insect motif.

TWIN PEAKS 1990-1991

A drama series set in a small Washington town where a popular high school student is murdered. An FBI agent is called in to investigate the murder and eventually uncovers the many secrets of the towns residents.

During the second season the ABC network clashed with Lynch about revealing the killer. Lynch wanted it to remain a mystery until the end of the series or else the show would be pointless. However, the network went ahead with revealing the identity of the killer which made Lynch lose interest in the show.

Lynch himself only directed six episodes and starred in several episodes as an FBI agent named Gordon Cole.
