Dear Saint Xavier Alumnae, It is incredible how fast nearly two years have passed since I accepted the office of President for our beloved Saint Francis Xavier Alumnae Association. I have had the pleasure to learn and grow with wonderful alumnae from class- es in the 40’s to the 80’s on the Executive Board. I am so very grateful for their faithful support, expertise, and assistance. It is close to 111 years since Sister Margaret Mary Donworth, RSM encouraged a group of SXA graduates to estab- lish the Alumnae Association. I believe she is smiling down from her high place in heaven at the dedication and hard work of the all-volunteer Executive Board ladies, the nearly 500 dues-paying members, and those who donate annually to our Catholic High School Scholarship Fund. I give a special thank you to these ladies, who out of over 3,000 on our database, donated more than $25,000 to the 2016 fund. Every cent of those donations went to worthy Catholic High School stu- dents to help reduce the financial burden on their families. The Association counts on the continual annual support of alumnae who keep up with the still very low Membership Dues of $10. The dues cover costs for printing and mailing of this Newsletter and other printing needs. In addition, dues cover the cost of keeping your contact information up-to-date on our database. This is costly even with the nonprofit bulk rate, not to mention the extra high cost of Return Service for alumnae not found, moved and/or deceased. Historically, our keeping alumnae contact information up to date is very important to the Association. The Association does not want to lose track of any one of our precious alumna. Each September the Executive Board awaits your support for the October Scholarships. We pray that we can maintain, or even better, exceed the 2016 Scholarship donations and continue to assist struggling families who see the value of sacrificing for an excellent Catholic High School education just like we received from SXA. This year, as every year, we invite ALL classes to attend the annual October 22 Homecoming event at the lovely Quidnessett Country Club luncheon, which follows a beautiful Mass honoring the 50 th Reunion Class. At the 11 o’clock Mass, each 50 th Reunion alumna will receive a beautiful gold rosary memento of this milestone event. And everyone will say a special prayer as the 50 th alumnae place a rose for each of their classmates and teachers resting in peace. I hope to see you on Sunday October 22. Thank you again for your continual generosity to the Scholarship fund. If you have never contributed, I pray that this will be the year you can use some of your precious time to do so. No matter what class you are in, please try to attend Homecoming Sunday, October 22 as alumnae give special honor to the 50 th Class of 1967 and all classes ending in 7 and 2. CLASS of 1942 - 75th Reunion!Dorothy Gleason Maynard401 397 3180

This past year has certainly been full of highs and lows for Madeline. Her difficult journey began thirteen years ago when she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Systemic Scleroderma (“hard skin”). The disease manifests itself by tissues of involved organs be-coming hard and fibrous, causing them to function less efficiently. Pulmonary Fibrosis resulted from Madeline’s Scleroderma, making it extremely dif-ficult for her to get oxygen for even the most routine tasks. After three years of round-the-clock supple-mental oxygen, last July she was accepted into the

lung transplant program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The Center is a leader in lung transplants, and one of only a few to consider transplant surgery on a patient with Scleroderma. Madeline and her husband lived temporarily in Pittsburgh to be close to the hospital as they anxiously waited for a pair of lungs to become available. Although a major part of getting through the stressful wait period was due to her family’s support and loving care, along with her positive attitude and genuine faith, Madeline is ever grateful for longtime friendships formed at SXA. Her friends kept continual contact via Facebook and a blog set up by her family at madforlife.org. (Both Madeline’s mother and mother-in-law were SXA alumnae and her aunt, Sister Marie Paulette, served on the faculty.) Madeline was especially touched to hear from a number of classmates with whom she had been out of contact for years. Madeline’s prayers were answered on January19th, when she finally received a call that a pair of donor lungs, appearing to be a good match, became available. The nearly twelve-hour surgery by the Transplant Team began the next afternoon. Madeline’s recuperation included over 5 weeks in the hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, and an additional 7 weeks “at home” in Pitts-burgh before returning to Rhode Island and her family at the end of April. Madeline feels blessed to be the recipient of a second chance at life. While acutely aware that her donor’s family misses their loved one, Madeline and her family are forever grateful to her donor and the donor family and the support through prayer from St. Xavier friends.

Susan Denellio Tardio, Class of ’67 (Resting In Peace, August 27, 2010). Sue received a BA from Salve Regina College in 1972, and MAT from RIC in 1979. She taught at Saint Rose of Lima Junior High, and ESL at Edgewood Highland School. Sue spent many years as a Fourth Grade teacher at Woodridge Elemen-tary School. Interested in helping both teachers and students, she devoted much of her time as Secre-tary for the Cranston Teachers’ Alliance. She and her husband, Vincenzio, lived in Garden City where they raised their daughters, Maria and Christine. Because of Sue’s daily neighborhood walks, she was fondly nicknamed the “mayor” of Garden City. She was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church. Although Sue’s colleagues knew her as an outstanding teacher, most importantly she was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Volume 1 Issue 9 Official Newsletter of the St. Francis Xavier Alumnae Association September 2017

This is my story which I do not tell that often (only if the occasion arises, and I believe it should be told) because most people will think I’m making it up or crazy! In April of 1946, I was a fresh-man at SXA and was diagnosed

with a form of Rheumatic Fever. I could not walk or hold on to anything, even a fork to feed myself. It started at the time I was the Class Treasurer during study period one day when I was selling lunch tickets. Three times I dropped the box with the money and tickets. I “swore” to the older sister in charge, who became angry with me thinking I was kidding around, that I was not fooling! I had to leave school and stay at home during the summer. My father brought me a recliner for outdoors and carried me out to be in the sun.The Italian neighbor-hood ladies went to Mass every day at Saint Ann Church, lighting candles and and praying for me. On August 15,1946, the Feast of the Assumption, as I was sitting outside in my chair, the bells at Saint Ann’s were ringing and a voice (lacking any other description I can give) told me I could get up and that I would be fine from now on. I got out of the recliner, walked up the front steps into the house and went into the pantry, where my mother was at the sink. She was shocked to see me there and I said to her, “Don’t worry, Mom. I’m going to be fine from now on!” Thank God and the Blessed Virgin, I have been. Believe in the power of prayer! Catholic faith in the Assumption is a reflection that Mary’s end is the promise of our beginning. Mary -- who is the Ark of the New Covenant, the Mother of the Lord -- is taken to heaven as a sign of our hope that we, through devout faith ‘in Christ shall be brought to life’. Every year I look forward to the Class of 1947 reunion tables as I roam around taking pictures for placement in the Alumnae Website. Not only was the Class of ’47 the largest graduating class in the history of Saint Francis Xavier

Academy (over 300), but it also continually brings the largest class representation to the annual Homecomings. Moving closer to the age of 80 and attracted to their vim and vigor, I want to learn the “secret” of this amazing group of smart, animated and elegant gentlewomen. A typical alumna of 1947, Louise Anthony Pendergast, age 88, has never missed an annual SXA reunion! Born in South Providence, (she had three older siblings) she moved to Cranston when she was about four years of age. “My mom, who worked all her life, would drop me off at a daycare run by the ‘White Sisters’ on Pine Street before she went to work as Head of Housekeeping at the Biltmore Hotel.” Louise attended Eden Park Elementary School and continued until the eighth grade at Valentine Almy Jr. High School in

Cranston. She changed her mind about continuing in public school when she learned her friend, Muriel Spellman Mulhearn (Deceased 2007), was going to St. Xavier’s. “I realize part of the person I am today is due to my upbringing, but in large measure it was also the wonderful confidence and spiritual develop-ment I received from the dedicated Religious Sisters of Mercy at St. Xavier Academy.” Louise developed typing skills, from Sister Concepta’s vigilant instruction, one of the requirements in the Com-mercial Division. Among the many clubs she was involved in were the Sodality of Our Lady of Mercy, Basketball and Spanish. In her senior year, after school, she got a job linking chains at Brier Mfg. on Richmond Street. The boss, know-ing that St. Xavier girls had excellent business skills, hired Louise for office work right after her graduation. Louise and Muriel would take the crosstown bus at the Park Theater to Rhodes every Wednesday and Saturday night. Muriel’s Dad would pick them up at the end of the evening. She met John, the love of her life, at a Rhodes’ dance. Muriel was not quite 20, when they planned to marry, but her mom had another idea “You will not get married before you are 20,” was her mom’s reprimand. So at age 20 in 1949, they married. They had four children—two girls and two boys (8 grandchildren). “John was just out of the military when we met. He was a Carpenter, and a very good provider. He passed away in 2010.” (Louise took care of him for sixteen years after he suffered a stroke.) One of her daughters, Shirley Pendergast Doherty (Class of ’68, SXA—50th Reunion next year), has four children and 8 grandchildren. Although throughout most of her married life, Louise was a “stay-at-home” wife and mother, once her children were grown, she went back to work at the Outlet Company as a saleslady. Thereafter, she worked for the Cranston School Department as a lunchroom worker. At age 70, she retired from the Cranston Town Hall as a Chief Clerk in the Records Department. “I loved all of my jobs, and to this day I have many friends from there. We have regular get-togethers and telephone conversations.” Recently, Louise was experiencing debilitating arthritic pain in her hip, keeping her from volunteering at the McCauley House, where she helps provide meals and support to those in need. Her motivation to get back to that job strengthened her determination to have hip surgery in May of 2017. “I love, love volunteering at the McCauley House. I just love it! I had to have this surgery so I could do my job at McCauley House.” Her recovery was so smooth that she was able to walk without a cane “within a month after surgery”. Louise enjoys living on the first floor in a Condo Village in Warwick, where she and John moved when he wasunable to climb stairs after his stroke. She participates in activities including Mahjong, Dominoes, and day trips with many “kind and friendly people”.

Early in her marriage, Louise developed what was to become a longtime St Xavier friendship when she surprisingly met another Commercial Division SXA grad—“While walking with my first daughter Shirley, I met Ann (Whitley) Maloney, walking with her daughter (she also worked for the City of Cranston). Through the years, our children participated together in St. Matthew church functions and other activities. In later years, Ann and I accompanied each other on trips throughout Europe and the USA, and every year we attend the SXA annual Homecoming. We have been friends for over sixty years!”

Learning about Louise and many other ladies in the Class of 1947, I discovered their “secret” encompasses positive attitudes, helping others, and continually developing skills with a vigorous social life and well...just being there, like every year at SXA Homecoming. Louise, like most of the ‘47 ladies, never forgets that her fortitude comes from resilience through faith, inspired by St. Francis Xavier Academy’s Sisters of Mercy through a crucial part of her developmental years.

“Betty” Mary Elizabeth (Francis) Magiera, 70th Reunion Class,‘47 Shares Some Memories

In my Book of Life, Saint Francis Xavier Academy holds a special section among the several chapters from 1944 to June 1947—Two Trips to Providence On The Bus Each Day from West Warwick, New Friends From All Over, and Friendships Lasting a Lifetime.

The Religious Sisters of Mercy touched my life in many ways. On my wedding day, I stopped at the Saint Xavier Convent to see Sister Celestine. A favorite photo in my wedding album is the one of me with my husband, Sister Celestine, and Sister Alphon-sa—there had to be two nuns in a picture. At Saint Xavier, I

was fortunate in many ways as I learned and enjoyed being Class President in my sophomore, junior, and senior years. There were many activities from which to choose—I enjoyed being in the Ave Maria Choristers and Stage Players and the Sodality Board. Because of being selected to be on “Our Lady’s Commission”, which oversaw all matters connected with the Blessed Mother, I was honored to crown her in the beautiful SXA Courtyard, an annual May event. I was invited, along with other members of the Sodality Board to go on a week’s trip to Fordham University in New York City, run by the Jesuits, for the “Summer School of Catholic Action”. At another time, Bishop Fran-cis P. Keough invited twelve of us on the Sodality Board to the Cathedral Rectory. We were the first to learn the “secret” that Ochre Court was acquired (given as a gift to the Sisters of Mercy by the Goelet family). It would open as Salve Regina in 1947. I could have been in the first graduating class there, but the temptation of a job offer was more appealing at the time. The Monday after graduating, I began a private secretarialposition in an investment firm on the 9th floor of the Hospital Trust building, where the other girls working there had come from Pembroke or Katherine Gibbs! I have served as past president of the Alumnae Association, and I continue toparticipate, attending Executive Board meetings and playing the organ at Homecoming Masses. I enjoy our activities, making friends with alumnae from other classes, and attending annual Homecoming Reunions with my classmates. As I celebrate my 70th Reunion (Is that possible?), I look back and say, “Where did the time go?” I had a wonderful marriage, a beautiful family with eightchildren, six girls and two boys, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. I have been a church organist for almost fifty years (currently at Saint Mary Church in West Warwick) and I love it! I serve on several boards and committees all of which “keeps me going”. I am truly blessed. The next chapter to come—ready or not—is to enjoy each day. Each day is a gift—enjoy it and thank the Good Lord! God bless! Betty, ‘47
