We met at a restaurant in San Francisco where he is enjoying retirement. He is an ordained Lutheran Pastor who has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and asks probing questions. In the middle of dinner he said, “Saint Michael & All Angels . . . so, do you really believe in angels?” Without hesitation I responded, “Of course!” When he continued with the inevitable “Why?” I stifled my initial smart aleck response, “Because I have been to their baseball games at the Big A in Anaheim”, and said “Because the Bible tells me so! And because every time we celebrate the Eucharist we pray, ‘Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing/pray this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name’.” Ever since that evening I’ve been asking myself, “Really, why do you believe in angels?” A contemporary human being faces at least three difficulties in moving beyond lip service to the existence of angels and archangels: (1) It is difficult to imagine an angel, or picture an archangel in one’s “mind’s eye”, with pure reason, except through the language of visual art or poetry. (2) This age has debased the ideas of angels while elevating the notion of the devil and demonic forces, forgetting that the devil is a fallen angel and those forces once were angelic. Yours, in Christ -

resurrection (Matthew 28:2 and Mark 16:5) and accompaniedhis ascension into heaven (Acts 1:10), and they will be presentwhen he comes again to judge the world (Mark 8:38) if webelieve the evangelists.

I think it is incontrovertible that Jesus transmitted his ownaffection for the angels to his apostles and, through them, tothe whole church. The Acts of the Apostles, Paul’s letters, and the Book of Revelation all indicate an awareness not onlythat angels exist, but that they are our friends, helping andguarding us here on earth, and that we will be united withthem enjoying the glories of life beyond these human bodies.

Are there “guardian angels”? Jesus said, “Take carethat you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you,in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Fatherin heaven.” (Matthew 18:10) Saint Jerome wrote, “Great isthe dignity of souls, that each of them has an angel assignedfor its protection.”

Who is our Patron, Michael the Archangel? In Daniel10:21, Michael is identified as the chosen people’s specialprotector and “prince”. In the ancient Jewish religious work,Enoch, Michael is depicted as a mighty captain, acting withother angels to thrust earth’s evil rulers into the fiery furnace. In Christian Scriptures’ Revelation (12:7-9) Michael isportrayed as God’s mighty champion against forces of evil, and Jude (verse 9) refers to a Michaelite legend in which heexorcises Satan with a rebuke from Zechariah (chapter 3),“The Lord rebuke you! ” by the nameless “angel of the Lord”.Christian tradition holds that Michael was the guardian angelof Paul (see Acts 27:23-24).

Orthodox Christians pray, “Gentle Michael of the whitesteed, who subdued the dragon of blood, for love of Godand the Son of Mary, spread your wing over us, shield usall!”

On September 30, we will pray words from our Book ofCommon Prayer (page 244):

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in awonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals:Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve andworship you in heaven, so by your appointment they mayhelp and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ ourLord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, oneGod, for ever and ever. Amen.

Of course I believe in angels. Do you?

Come celebrate Saint Michael & All Angels!

Continued from page 1

On the Feast of Michael and all Angels, popularly calledMichaelmas, we give thanks for the many ways in

which God's loving care watches over us, both directlyand indirectly, and we are reminded that the richness andvariety of God's creation far exceeds our knowledge of it.

The Holy Scriptures often speak of created intelligencesother than humans who worship God in heaven and act asHis messengers and agents on earth. We are not told muchabout them, and it is not clear how much of what we aretold is figurative. Jesus speaks of them as rejoicing overpenitent sinners (Lk 15:10). Elsewhere, in a statement thathas been variously understood (Mt 18:10), He warns againstmisleading a child, because their angels behold the face ofGod. (Acts 12:15 may refer to a related idea.)

In the Hebrew Scriptures, it is occasionally reported thatsomeone saw a man who spoke to him with authority, and who he then realized was no mere man, but amessenger of God. Thus we have a belief in super-humanrational created beings, either resembling men in appearanceor taking human appearance when they are to communicatewith us. They are referred to as "messengers of God," orsimply as "messengers." The word for a messenger inHebrew is malach, in Greek, angelos, from which we getour word "angel".

By the time of Christ, Jewish popular belief includedmany specifics about angels, with names for many of them. There were thought to be four archangels, named Michael,Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. An alternative tradition hasseven archangels (see Tobit 12:15 and 1 Enoch 20).Sometimes each archangel is associated with one of theseven planets of the Ptolemaic system (the moon, Mercury,Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). Michael isassociated with Saturn and Uriel with the Sun.

Michael (the name means "Who is like God?") is said tobe the captain of the heavenly armies. He is mentioned inthe Scriptures in Daniel 10:13,31; 12:1 (where he is saidto be the prince of the people of Israel); in Jude 9 (wherehe is said to have disputed with the devil about the body ofMoses); and in Revelation 12:7 (where he is said to haveled the heavenly armies against those of the great dragon).

He is generally pictured in full armor, carrying a lance, and with his foot on the neck of a dragon. (Pictures ofthe Martyr George are often similar, but only Michael haswings.)

Gabriel (the name means "God is my champion") isthought of as the special bearer of messages from Godto men. He appears in Daniel 8:16; 9:21 as an explainer ofsome of Daniel's visions. According to the first chapterof Luke, he announced the forthcoming births of Johnthe Baptist and of our Lord to Zachariah and the VirginMary respectively.

Raphael (the name means "God heals") is mentioned inthe Apocrypha, in the book of Tobit, where, disguised asa man, he accompanies the young man Tobias on a quest, enables him to accomplish it, and gives him a remedy forthe blindness of his aged father.

Uriel (the name means "God is my light" -- comparewith "Uriah", which means "the LORD is my light") ismentioned in 4 Esdras.

It is thought by many scholars that the seven lamps ofRevelation 4:5 are an image suggested by (among manyother things) the idea of seven archangels.

In His Steps

I want to thank all of you for thewonderful support and outpouring

of kindness for Vacation BibleSchool.

From the beginning days of planningin June to the last child to skip outthe All Angels’ Court door, there wasa great display of parish devotion. InRomans 12:6, Scripture speaks ofthe various gifts in the Body ofChrist. When the call went out, therewere those who donated their time, for others, they donated theirresources, and for others, theirprayers. Each of these aspectscontributed to the joy and successof a Saint Michael & All Angels’program for children, namelyJourney to the Holy Land 2012.

On four consecutive Friday nights, beginning on July 13, twenty-fourchildren from our parish as well asfrom the community walked up thesidewalk and into the sanctuary. They each carried a simpledrawstring satchel with raisins andplay passport inside. It was their timefor pilgrimage. Once inside thesanctuary, the children were met byBarbara Black’s piano playing. Thechildren sat on the carpet andparticipated in a music lesson. Afterabout twenty minutes of music, thechildren were then taught a Biblelesson about a specific location inJesus’ life. There were four locations, the hills of Bethlehem, the village ofNazareth, the Sea of Galilee and thecity of Jerusalem.

Actresses and actors, PeggyStrong, Steve Caldwell, ClydeDodge, Myrna Ireland, DottieCole and Michael Strong broughtthe teaching time to life. Our parishchildren are still talking about thecomedic as well as thoughtfuldramatic portions of the VBSprogram. Anne Conover led thegroup of children around the parishgrounds for the pilgrimage. Sheasked them to reflect and think aboutthe things they saw along the way.She also stamped their passportseach week. Cal McLaughlin made

[Episcopal News Service] TheRev’d Canon Gary R. Hall, Episcopalpriest of 35 years and currently rectorof Christ Church Cranbrook inBloomfield Hills, Michigan, has beennamed as the 10th dean ofWashington National Cathedral.

The cathedral chapter made theannouncement on July 30 after asearch committee recommended Hallfrom “a diverse pool of candidatesfrom across the country in a processthat spanned more than sevenmonths,” a cathedral release said.

The Protestant Episcopal CathedralFoundation Board of Trustees isexpected to approve the nomination.

Hall, 62, is then expected to beginas dean on Oct. 1, succeeding TheRev’d Samuel T. Lloyd III, whostepped down as the cathedral’s deanin September 2011 to return as priest-in-charge of Boston’s Trinity Churchin Copley Square, where Lloyd hadpreviously served as rector. TheRev’d Dr. Francis H. Wade hasserved as the cathedral’s interim deanon a part-time basis since January.Hall’s installation service is expectedto take place later in the fall.

Prior to his post in Michigan, Hallserved as dean and president ofSeabury-Western TheologicalSeminary in Evanston, Illinois, from2005 to 2010. Before that he servedas rector of the Church of theRedeemer in Bryn Mawr,Pennsylvania, from 2000 to 2005. Andfor 11 years prior, he served as thesenior associate for education at AllSaints Episcopal Church in Pasadena,California. He started his ordainedministry in 1976 as a deacon internand bishop’s chaplain in Los Angeles.

Hall earned an A.B. in English at theUniversity of California, Berkeley, in1972; a M.Div. degree withdistinction at the Episcopal DivinitySchool at Cambridge, Massachusetts,in 1976. He later earned a master’sdegree in English from the Universityof California, Los Angeles, in 1984.He added a C.Phil. In a letter to the cathedralcommunity, Bishop Mariann EdgarBudde of Washington, David J.Kautter, chair of the cathedral chapter,

and Canon Kathleen A. Cox,cathedral’s executive director, saidthey are “thrilled” by the nomination, noting that Hall “joins us at a pivotalmoment in the life of the cathedral, and we are confident that the HolySpirit has led the search process tothis joyous conclusion.”

The letter said that Hall “possessesthe spiritual and personal strengthsto guide the cathedral toward thefulfillment of its great purpose” —in service to God’s reconcilingmission in Christ.

In the letter, Hall called WashingtonNational Cathedral “an architecturaltreasure and a living symbol ofworship and ministry in the nation’scapital … I am eager to beginconversations with all the cathedral’sfriends about how we can strengthenour historic ministries and imagineand enact new ones. I look forwardto working with Bishop Budde,Cathedral staff and volunteers, theentire Cathedral Close, the Dioceseof Washington, and with theextended community of supportersacross the nation both to advance thecathedral’s interfaith and nationalmission and to expand its ministryin Washington.”

As dean, Hall will serve as theecclesiastical leader of the cathedral andbe its public voice, the letter noted. “Hewill preach regularly and lead thecathedral in convening people of all faithsand perspectives to examine and respondto important issues in the world. Garywill also lead the significant fundraisingeffort to restore and preserve thecathedral following $20 million of damageincurred from the August 2011 EastCoast earthquake, in addition toresponsibility for an annual operatingbudget of $12 million and approximately$30 million of pre-existing preservationneeds.”

What is the value to us ofremembering the Holy Angels? Well, since they appear to excel us in bothknowledge and power, they remind usthat, even among created things, wehumans are not the top of the heap.Since it is the common belief thatdemons are angels who have chosen todisobey God and to be His enemiesrather than His willing servants, theyremind us that the higher we are thelower we can fall. The greater ournatural gifts and talents, the greater thedamage if we turn them to bad ends. The more we have been given, the morewill be expected of us. And, in thepicture of God sending His angels tohelp and defend us, we are remindedthat apparently God, instead of doinggood things directly, often prefers to dothem through His willing servants, enabling those.Commentary from The Lectionary websitehttp://satucket.com/lectionary/index.htm,Charles Wohlers, Webmaster.

sure the stragglers at the end of the line didn’t wander off. Once the wearytravelers (if you can imagine a child ever being tired!) entered All Angels’Court and stood in wonder at the sets, they were directed to dinner. MelindaRader cooked and fed the group each week with the help of Corinne Stover. The bill of fair was macaroni and cheese, an all time favorite. Other foodswere donated. There were Middle Eastern foods for the children to try. ClydeDodge took pictures and kept the SMAA website up-to-date on VBS. Duringthe last twenty minutes of the VBS time, the children participated in crafttime which they loved. Murry McClaren and Julie Kirsch did a beautifuljob at helping with crafts. Murry also helped with registration. Francis Fukudamade tissue paper stained-glass windows. During the month of July, NormEwers passed out VBS flyers in the surrounding neighborhoods. Rector PeterHaynes patiently kept the many doors unlocked and supervised the wholeevent each week. And Mike Ortt did a very sacrificial act of his time, drivinghis truck to Santa Ana to pick up the voting booths/sets as well as hauling outthe wooden children’s church from Irvine Presbyterian Church’s basement.

As the beginning of the school year is in sight, and summer will soon bebehind us, I have found reflecting on The Blessing each week in worship tobe a happy memory.

“May the babe of Bethlehem bring you peace, the child of Nazareth bringyou joy, may the man of Galilee bring you strength, and Jesus of Calvarybring you courage.”

Thank you everyone for all your time, donations and prayers.Sincerely,Susan Caldwell

CYPRIAN(ca) 200-258

Bishop and Martyr of Carthage

Cyprian was born of pagan parentsin North Africa around 200 AD. As

an adult, he was a rich, aristocratic, triallawyer and a renowned rhetorician.Around 246, a respected Christian priestconverted him to Christianity, aconversion that caused him to renouncemuch of his wealth. In 248, he waselected Bishop of Carthage. A year later,in the persecution under the EmperorDecius, Cyprian went into hiding; forthis he was severely criticized.Nonetheless, he kept in touch with hischurch by letter, and directed it withwisdom and compassion.

After the persecution died down, theproblem of what to do with those lapsedChristians who had denied their faithunder duress became a serious issue.Cyprian held that they should bereceived back into the church after asuitable period of probation andpenance. Other bishops disagreed.Novatus would receive them back withno probation at all. Novation would notreceive them back at all and brokecommunion with the rest of the churchover this issue, forming a dissidentgroup that was especially strong inRome. The Bishop of Rome held thesame view as Cyprian, who wrote aletter urging the Christians of Rome tostand with their bishop.

Later, the question of whether or notbaptisms performed by heretical groupsought to be recognized as valid by thechurch arose. Cyprian held thatconverts from such groups should bere-baptized. Bishop Steven of Rome didnot. The controversy was not resolvedduring Cyprian’s lifetime.

During the reign of the EmperorValerian, Carthage suffered a severeplague epidemic. Cyprian organized aprogram of medical relief and nursingthat was available to all people. Hisbenevolence did not, however, persuade the pagan population that theplague was not caused by the spreadof Christianity. Another persecutionfollowed. This time Cyprian did not flee;he was arrested, tried and finallybeheaded on September 14, 258.

Many of Cyprian’s writings havebeen preserved. His letter on theEucharist affirms that the priest actsin the place of Christ, imitating hisactions. In his treatise On the Lord’sPrayer he maintained that “We seekfrom the Lord that his Name may bemade Holy in us.” Although there issome question as to whether his book,“On the Unity of the Catholic Church,”affirms papal primacy, there is noquestion about the clarity of hisstatements concerning the unity of thecollege of bishops. “The episcopateis a single whole…in which eachbishop’s share gives him the right to,and a responsibility for, the whole. Sois the Church a single whole, thoughShe spreads far and wide into amultitude of Churches…”

Cyprian’s Feast Day is September 14.

STEPHENBLACK

As many of you know, I spentnearly a month overseas in July

and the first part of August. I touredwith the USC Chamber Singers inNew Zealand and Australia, and thenI struck out on my own and went toSingapore and Malaysia. In Singapore I was able to see mydear friend Chin Kai Lim, who was astudent colleague of mine at theUniversity of Louisville when I wasan undergraduate organ major. He isnow the Minister of Music at St.Andrew’s Anglican Cathedral inSingapore. He reminded me of thetrouble I used to cause at the schoolbecause of my forgetfulness andabsentmindedness. He told stories ofincidents I had forgotten! (I’m sure Iput them out of my mind onpurpose..). While there, I was able to attend aBuddhist wedding celebration, awonderful event with amazing musicand an even more amazing profusionof flowers. It reminded me of the

gripes of some of my organist friendshere in the US, who complain thatmuch more money is spent on flowersthan on the music for the ceremony! From Singapore I went to KualaLumpur, where I was able to shareRamadan breakfast twice with newlymade Muslim friends. I think most of us who have anyfamiliarity with this tradition know thatthe meal is customarily shared withfamily in the home. However, KualaLumpur (or KL, as the locals call it) isa typically busy Asian city, with terriblerush hour traffic. Many people cannotmake it from their office job to theirhome before sundown. What hashappened over the years is that hugefood bazaars have sprung up alongmany streets, with tent after tent offantastic Malaysian food. Instead ofgoing home, people gather with familyand friends and walk up and down thestreets, purchasing food until the timewhen the customary chant is broadcastover the mosque loudspeaker. On two different evenings I walkedup and down the city streets with myinteresting new friends and gatheredfood, all the while absorbing the soundsof motorbikes and laughter and

smelling the delicious aromas. When itwas time, we all pigged out!

I hope that you all have enjoyed thesummer and are re-charged and readyto dive into September and the followingmonths. I know that I am! I’m going toclose this column with the words froma hymn I heard at St. Andrew’s Cathedral(which we will sing at some point):

‘Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around;

He burns with holy fire, with splendour He is crowned.

How awesome is the sight, our radiant King of light!

Be still, for the glory of the Lordis shining all around.’
