one Women’s journey into the car World

by sue nader

i always had a little iNterest iN cars. i grew up with two youNger brothers who love cars aNd my best frieNd who is a car faNatic so i was accustomed to the idea of classic cars. this beiNg said though i was Not accustomed to the world of car shows, car meets, cruise iN’s etc. i would see these really cool cars parked iN parkiNg lots of the weNdys or the a &w aNd would admire them from a distaNce NotiNg which oNes i thought looked Nice aNd which i didN’t care for esthetically. that’s as far as i ever got before a year ago. i met my sigNificaNt other a year ago aNd he is a car faNatic. he owNs aNd ruNs his owN custom hot rod garage aNd he slowly started iNtroduciNg me iNto his world. at first i have to admit i was draggiNg my heels wheN it came to go to shows or cruise iN’s or the track. i would say to him “No hoNey its ok you go oN your owN i’m goiNg to go out with the girls or i’m goiNg shoppiNg with my mum”. i couldN’t uNderstaNd the poiNt of speNdiNg aN eNtire day iN a parkiNg lot lookiNg at these old cars. the idea of it baffled me but i did it because it meaNt a lot to him that i come. the relatioNship beiNg New i waNted to express a siNcere iNterest iN his world as i like to call it. so that’s what i did. i took a suck it up pill aNd i weNt to the track aNd i weNt to a couple car shows. theN the seasoN eNded aNd i took a sigh of relief aNd thought great Now i doN’t have

to go to aNy more of these shows! little did i kNow… the year weNt oN aNd all of a suddeN the weather started to chaNge for the better. the days got loNger aNd it was lighter out loNger iNto the eveNiNg aNd we all kNow what comes with the New weather…… car seasoN. all of a suddeN he had every weekeNd plaNNed out for us with car shows! that didN’t register to well with this womaN at first. so agaiN because it meaNt the world to him i weNt to these shows with him. the first show we weNt to i actually fouNd myself startiNg to actually like beiNg there. i would actually eNjoy lookiNg at the cars a little more closely aNd admiriNg the work people put iNto these cars. i started to chaNge my outlook oN the car shows aNd the car world iN geNeral. i started to really see him iN his elemeNt talkiNg to the car owNers, talkiNg to guys who have had their car iN his shop or talkiNg to guys who have beeN to some of the bigger eveNts like the races at the boNNeville salt flats. i started to see aNd feel his passioN aNd love for this whole other world. i was startiNg to like this world of his as well. we Now joke that the wiNter is to what i waNt to do aNd the summer is his time. we receNtly weNt to the good guys show iN seattle, wa aNd i fouNd myself submersed iN this world agaiN except this time i waNted to be there. i was eNjoyiNg myself. we were

there to photograph the show aNd i am Not a photographer by aNy meaNs but i started to play arouNd with the camera aNd takiNg pictures of the cars aNd the people. by mid-day i was haviNg a blast! i thiNk i almost gave my other half a heart attack because i waNted to talk about cars, differeNt aNgles to take pictures, what kiNds of pictures would be cool to get etc. i was haviNg fuN. i couldN’t believe it. we got home that Night aNd i thought wow i didN’t thiNk the day would ever come where i would actually eNjoy beiNg at a car show! Now i am lookiNg forward to the Next show, partially because i get my owN camera to play with this time, but also because i eNjoyed the last show we were at. i like the atmosphere; i like eNergy, like seeiNg people’s proud faces as they display the cars they have busted their hiNds oN. most of all thought i like the feeliNg of it beiNg a family eveNt aNd i am a big family persoN. i caN picture myself briNgiNg our kids to these shows aNd pulliNg them arouNd iN their owN miNi hot rod or classic car listeNiNg to their dad talk to them about cars. if i could offer oNe piece of advice to the womeN or meN out there who are dreadiNg goiNg to these shows (i kNow you’re out there!) give it a chaNce. give it a fair shot because you may just eNd up likiNg it. fiNd a way to make it eNjoyable for you as well. whether it be checkiNg out the clothes (love the shirts by the way!) or takiNg pictures have fuN! this is quality time that you get with your partNer/family that you caN’t get iN aNy other way. quality time without the tv, the computers or gamiNg systems.eNjoy it!seNd us your stories to [email protected]

gross established the class criteria aNd iNvited the first hot rod competitors. he chose NiNe feNderless roadsters from the 1940s aNd ‘50s, all of which had pedigrees as either street/show or street/lakes race cars. gross, ray brock, alex xydias, aNd doN moNtgomery were the judges at that first eveNt.

the wiNNer was bruce meyer with his restored doaNe speNcer deuce, which also woN the ford-spoNsored deaN batchelor award for the most historically sigNificaNt hot rod. kirk white took secoNd with his ‘32 ford lakes racer origiNally owNed by ray browN, aNd third place weNt to doN orosco for his toNy lamasa deuce roadster.

iN 2010 pebble beached hosted a hot rod lakesters aNd boNNeville racers class for cars built aNd raced bet weeN 1927 aNd 1953. there hot rods, are a uNiquely americaN form of automotive expressioN aNd the desire to go as fast as possible was expressed iN the dry lakes raciNg.

pebble beach is not your t ypical hot rod shoW and it Will never claim to be

one. pebble beach does hold the key to a lot of the history of the automobile and the different st yles and era’s and While they aren’t t ypical hot rods, a car guy has to appreciate the craftsman ship, hard Work and dedication it takes to preserve the history in these cars.

With the recent additions to this very traditional automotive shoW, hot rods Will be noW and forever present at the pebble beach.

Welcome to Project c-10 !! project concept - the purpose of this project is to show people that iN today’s ecoNomic climate, a persoN caN build a custom vehicle that isN’t goiNg to break the baNk aNd doesN’t have to cost six figures. it is also meaNt to show that you caN do most of the work yourself, if Not all of it, at your home iN a t wo-car garage. our goal with this project is to be able to build a custom classic truck with moderN fuel ecoNomy aNd performaNce for arouNd $20,000 iN parts. by usiNg places like ebay, craigslist aNd your local auto recyclers, we will be able to buy the truck, the drive traiN aNd so maNy of the other parts we Need. we will also show that you doN’t Need to buy overkill thiNgs for your street car like brake systems meaNt for a race car. we will show

that you doN’t have to speNd $6,000 for a used ls2 motor or eveN way more for aN ls3 or ls7. you caN get a 6.0 or 5.3 vortec motor from a late-model truck for a third of that $6,000 with a traNsmissioN aNd get more performaNce aNd horsepower for less theN aN additioNal $1,000. we will also show you that you caN have a custom iNterior by usiNg a lot of oem parts aNd just speNdiNg the time to refiNish them aloNg with some slight customiZatioN, aNd that by combiNiNg oem parts from other vehicles fouNd iN your local auto recycler.

project design - we purchased a 1979 truck that we fouNd oN craig’s list aloNg with aNother cab from aN ‘86 for $1,000. the ‘86 came with a lot of items that will save us a huge amouNt of moNey wheN it comes to the build of the truck. the ‘86 was a diesel so it had a fully-fuNctioNiNg hydroboost system which will save us $600+ right there. the iNterior was a top-of-the-

liNe model. it has all the hard-to-fiNd pillar trim, headliNer aNd headliNer trim (iN awesome shape) aloNg with top-of-the-liNe door paNels, etc. this will save us huNdreds of $$ right there.

exterior design - the truck is aN ‘79 but the exterior styliNg will be strictly that of a ‘73/’74 c-10. we will be doiNg a basic budget dual-toNe paiNt job with white ceNtre aNd bright red upper aNd lower sectioN. we will be usiNg all of the ‘73/’74 exterior mouldiNg, eveN the siNgle rouNd headlights, aNd will also use the stock froNt aNd rear bumpers, but we will be shaviNg the mouNtiNg bolts for a smoother look. we will replace the oem grille ceNtre sectioN with a billet iNsert.

interior design - while the truck will have the ‘73/’74 c-10 styliNg oN the outside, we are actually goiNg to use a dash, bucket seats aNd ceNtre coNsole from the ‘67-’72 body style c-10. we will be usiNg aN aftermarket six-gauge set-up with aN aftermarket hvac system. aN aftermarket steeriNg columN with shifter will be utiliZed to give a lit tle more “gut” room. to cleaN thiNgs up, the dash will be shaved of all thiNgs but the glove box, gauge cluster aNd the outer hvac veNts. thiNgs like the igNitioN, wiper aNd headlight switches aloNg with the hvac coNtrols will be mouNted iNside the ceNtre coNsole for a sleek aNd cleaNer dash.

engine & transmission - we waNted to have all the classic styliNg of the truck but the moderN coNveNieNce aNd fuel ecoNomy of a late-model fuel iNjectioN motor, so we are plaNNiNg oN usiNg either aN lq4 or aN lq9 6.0-litre drive-by-wire eNgiNe. we will detail it iN

oraNge, black aNd chrome, aNd use aN ls-1-style chrome or polished iNtake, red ls2 coil covers aNd polished pulleys. the traNsmissioN will be the 4l60e automatic. it will all be wired with aN aftermarket staNd-aloNe wiriNg harNess system.

suspension / brakes / frame - we are goiNg to do a basic 5/5-iNch drop oN the truck. we are goiNg to upgrade the froNt disc brakes aNd do a drum to disc coNversioN oN the rear. the truck came with a hydroboost iN it so this will give us iNcredible brakiNg power with the drive traiN we will have iN project c-10. we are also goiNg to have the frame saNdblasted aNd powder coated aloNg with all the suspeNsioN aNd steeriNg compoNeNts, replace all of the cab, frame, suspeNsioN aNd steeriNg bushiNgs, aNd replace all of the fuel aNd brake liNes iN the truck.

each moNth we will feature a differeNt part of the build of this project vehicle from strippiNg it dowN, mock up/coNstructioN aNd the fiNal assembly.

Stay tuned each month for Project c-10

Hot Rodding & dRag Racing

drag racing family st yleby sue nader

racetracks were primarily desigNed for competitioN through speed. they have beeN arouNd siNce the romaN empire. the origiNal track was desigNed for horse aNd chariot raciNg. as the automobile was iNveNted iN the late 19th /early 20th ceNtury, raciNg started to shift towards iNcludiNg the automobile aNd phasiNg out the horse aNd chariot.

the race itself has Not beeN the oNly chaNge over the years. the surfaces or “tracks” that these eveNts were held oN evolved. the track evolved from dirt tracks iN stadiums desigNed to hold spectators duriNg the romaN empire to big race tracks to hold eveNts

like Nhra right dowN to drag raciNg iN your local towN. today you caN still fiNd dirt race tracks that are used primarily activities such as horse raciNg, motor cross aNd bmx raciNg. the moderN tracks were desigNed with utmost spectator safety aNd ofteN iNvolve ruN off areas, barriers aNd high feNciNg.

as drag raciNg became popular the Need

for drag raciNg tracks became greater. this prompted the Need for buildiNg of race tracks such as irwiNdale, pomoNa aNd iNdiaNapolis motor speedway. they all featured (aNd still do) defiNed start aNd fiNish liNes aloNg with a series of timiNg poiNts that divide the track iNto time sectors. some racetracks offer lit tle iN the way of permaNeNt iNfrastructure except the actual track while others iNcorporate spectator facilities such as graNdstaNds,

hospitality or facilities for competitors.

whether you’re headiNg to the track as a spectator to a big race or to partake iN the street legal races it is aN eveNt that is eNjoyed by the whole family. oN aNy giveN day or Night at the track you’re bouNd to fiNd Not oNly kids aNd adults of all ages but also eNtire families.

what makes the track so appealiNg to the whole family? what makes people keep comiNg back? quite simply it is just a fuN iNexpeNsive Night out which is Not always easy to fiNd. the other big at tractioN is that the track is that it is a drug aNd alcohol free eNviroNmeNt. families caN come to the track with the kids aNd doN’t have to worry about what they might be exposed too. pareNts caN feel at ease with their teeNs at the track with their frieNds kNowiNg they’re iN a cleaN aNd safe eNviroNmeNt. moms caN come to the track with the kids while dad is out of towN aNd dad doesN’t have to worry about the safety of his family. a lot of pareNts try aNd

get their kids iNvolved iN the raciNg as much as they caN. they get them doiNg everythiNg from checkiNg tire pressures, to wreNchiNg oN the cars or eveN driviNg the cars. this helps to keep them iNterested aNd waNtiNg to go to the track with their pareNts as they get older.

the track provides racers of all ages the opportuNity to race aNd show off their race cars iN a safe coNtrolled eNviroNmeNt. all

racers must abide by track rules aNd pass techNical iNspectioNs before beiNg permit ted to race. this helps iN eNsuriNg the coNtiNued safety of the racers, spectators aNd track workers.

after speNdiNg time at the track aNd talkiNg to the guys aNd gals it is Not hard to see why they love comiNg back to the track. for those that are regulars at the track they will tell you that the people at the track become like a secoNd family. this combiNed with the Need for speed aNd the adreNaliNe rush fuels their desire to keep comiNg back. just like aNy athlete who competes at aNy level, racers have the same urge to coNtiNuously improve their craft. racers aNd marathoNers share the same urge aNd desire to go faster, beat their times aNd compete with frieNds aNd fellow racers.

a day or a Night speNt at the track is a Night full of thrills, excitemeNt, competitioN aNd sometimes eveN a lit tle disappoiNtmeNt. you may leave the track with a New time or with the same time. however regardless of what happeNs oN the strip you will always leave with New memories, aNd the urge to come back for more. so fiNd out where your local track is, head dowN there aNd take iN a race. who kNows you might eNd up makiNg some New frieNds!

most rat rods appear “uNfiNished”, whether they actually are or Not. the rat rods the customiZatioN will iNclude usiNg spare parts from aNother car, or eveN NoN-car parts. rat rods have faced a lot of Negativity iN the traditioNal hot rod world over the last few years. they have always beeN thought to be uNsafe aNd just a mismatch of parts of cars from all walks of life aNd eveN items from outside the automotive iNdustry. isN’t that what a hot rod was wheN it started? the safety aspect of origiNal hot rods was lackiNg just as much as some of today’s rat rods. today’s rat rod culture iN geNeral is oNe of iNgeNuity aNd creativity. i was at a rat rod show receNtly called the “iNfestatioN”. i had Never beeN to aN eveNt that had close to 200 rat rods

before. i have to say that the eveNt made a big impact oN me aNd how i perceive rat rods place this hot rod culture. this eveNt focused oN rat rods aNd reaffirmed my previous opiNioN about the creativeNess of these machiNes. most of these cars are meaNt to look like there is No creativity iNvolved iN them aNd they are just throwN together but i am here to say that this is the furthest thiNg from the truth. while it caN’t be argued that it takes a lot of skill to build a regular hot rod, it also takes a tremeNdous amouNt of creativity to make these rat rods look like they’re just a hotchpotch of parts aNd yet have it look like old rusted piece of juNk at the same time. iN the old days of hot rods, they would take a body, strip it dowN to NothiNg, put a bigger motor iNto it aNd

rat rods….hot rod or not?by tim baillie

they say that everythiNg comes back arouNd. that every fad fashioN aNd style will eveNtually come back iN style. let’s hope that t weed Never comes back iN style! what is old is New aNd what is New is old. where do rat rods fit iNto americaN pop culture aNd more importaNtly the hot rod world? i thiNk to properly uNderstaNd rat rods; we Need to uNderstaNd the basic history of the hot rod. hot rods origiNated iN califorNia prior wwii arouNd the late 1930’s. people maiNly teeNs would modify their cars aNd race them oN empty dry lake beds. this iNcreased iN popularity after wwii. maNy of the soldiers that were returNiNg from war had beeN giveN techNical traiNiNg iN the service aNd Needed aN outlet for their skills. eveN bootleggers joiNed iN oN the modifyiNg car craZe. they used their modified cars to escape reveNue

ageNts.

accordiNg to wikipedia, the rat rod is a style of hot rod or custom car that, iN most cases, imitates aNd sometimes exaggerates the early hot rods of the 1940s, 1950s & the early 1960s. it is Not to be coNfused with the somewhat closely related “traditioNal” hot rod, which is aN accurate re-creatioN or period-correct restoratioN of a hot rod from the same era.

go race it. they didN’t have the moNey aNd the iNdustry wasN’t able to produce big faNcy paiNt jobs or state of the air suspeNsioN systems or smooth custom leather iNteriors. this is exactly what a rat rod owNer is tryiNg to reproduce today. rat rods are built oN a budget (like the old days) or with a very big budget so that they have the best of everythiNg wheN it comes to that hotchpotch of parts. theN there is everythiNg iN bet weeN, just like hot rods of today aNd yesterday.

hot rods aNd rat rods share so maNy similarities aNd yet they are so far apart iN maNy people’s eyes. this couldN’t be more evideNt thaN goiNg to aN eveNt like

boNNeville speed week, where rat rods are iN abuNdaNce everywhere you go at oN the salt flats, at the hotels aNd oN track itself. seeiNg rat rods at this kiNd of eveNt makes you almost feel like you have beeN traNsported back iN time to the 50’s wheN these exact styles of hot rods were raciNg oN this very same track aNd this same salt. i have at teNded about 4 doZeN shows iN the last 2 moNths or so aNd the “iNfestatioN” show was oNe of the best shows i have beeN to iN a very loNg time. the people iN at teNdaNce at this show, both car owNer aNd spectator were delightful to meet aNd talk with. there are No secrets with them aNd spectator were delightful to meet aNd wheN it comes to the parts they used

or the techNiques they used to build their cars. they were proud to share this iNformatioN opeNly aNd freely with each other aNd aNyoNe who asked. these owNers were proud of the parts that they sought out from all walks of life to use oN their cars to separate them from everyoNe else aNd make their cars uNique aNd their owN. the joy iN the stories they had lookiNg for the smallest part to iNcorporate iNto the car makes a persoN waNt to go out aNd start buildiNg their owN rat rod just to hopefully share some of the same pride these car owNers have. rat rods are here to stay.

youNg guNsby cody cole

youNg guN.....geNeratioN x......chaNces are if you’re iN the car hobby, you’ve heard some of these terms. myself, i am oNe of these at age 19. i have a stroNg passioN for everythiNg automotive. some may eveN say i’m craZy but hey, i’m just your average youNg guN. i live, breathe aNd sleep cars. it’s beeN that way siNce i caN remember. growiNg up iN a muscle car based family aNd watchiNg the dukes of haZZard religiously oN tv, i became

hooked at a very youNg age. telliNg my dad i waNted a geNeral lee at age 5 resulted iN me get tiNg my very owN 1969 dodge charger at age 6 that was aN ex parts car that had seeN bet ter days. that just fueled the growiNg addictioN. at age 8 i started helpiNg my dad restore a 1970 buick gsx aNd a 1971 camaro rs Z/28 for his frieNd. most kids at that age were playiNg video games, sports aNd tradiNg pokemaN cards. i however was out iN the garage wheNever i could. my dad aNd i speNt time iN the juNk yards lookiNg for parts. my time was also speNt collectiNg hot wheels, die cast cars or oN the computer lookiNg at pictures of my favorite cars. my dad’s frieNd owNed a collectioN of cars i grew up arouNd. he had a gsx, a big bad oraNge 1970 amc amx 390 4 speed, aNd a 1965 galaxie with a 427 police iNterceptor aNd 10,000 origiNal miles to Name a few. it’s clear; there were always high powered muscle cars iN my childhood.

as aN adult Now teN years later i’m happy to say i have a pret ty good collectioN myself that iNcludes my charger, a 1970 dodge coroNet super bee, a 1973 plymouth duster aNd a pair of 5.0 ford mustaNgs.

Now, the iNterestiNg thiNg about us youNg guNs our ability to acquire what we waNt for a lesser price. my dad’s frieNd had speNt thousaNds upoN thousaNds of dollars oN his collectioN however miNe was acquired for much less. see, youNg guNs have a special way of gettiNg what they waNt goal wise iN regards to buyiNg cars or workiNg oN their cars while oN a very strict budget. blataNtly put, we kNow how to get it doNe. most of us youNg guNs do whatever we caN oN our cars ourselves

to save costs. my charger aNd coroNet are still projects but i am makiNg progress with them. my charger weNt from beiNg a bare shell to a complete car. oNe of the thiNgs we do is huNt for deals. i search craigslist, ebay aNd kijji daily checkiNg out ads aNd lookiNg for deals. wheN you kNow what you’re lookiNg for aNd value, it’s possible to fiNd good stuff oN there. it takes skill. you Need to be quick aNd kNow where to look.

NetworkiNg at car shows aNd oN car forums aNd kNowiNg the right people is aNother big factor. from the age 13, i immersed myself iN Numerous car forums. my favorite was aNd still is dodgecharger.com. this forum is filled with a great group of people, who from the get-go kNew i was a youNg guy with a charger, aNd jumped

at offeriNg me parts aNd advice. i’ve always fouNd it amaZiNg how tight kNit the car commuNity is aNd how williNg car guys are to help out someoNe who’s just startiNg out. people oN the forum were very geNerous. they seNt a lot of parts. everythiNg from brackets to door paNels aNd eveN a braNd New door lock kit. the geNerosity of people iN the car commuNity aNd that website still amaZe me aNd i will be forever thaNkful to them aNd everyoNe else that has helped me out. oNce you fiNd the right forum, dive iNto it aNd immerse yourself with all the iNformatioN you caN. there always people williNg to share their stories aNd kNowledge with you No matter what braNd you are iNterested iN. from ford aNd gm to mopar aNd everythiNg iN betweeN,

there is always somebody williNg to help. maNy car shows aNd eveNts out there are startiNg to support this by offeriNg a special class just for guys uNder 25.

i’m goiNg to fiNish this up by shariNg about a project to build a 1971 super bee uNdertakeN by two youNg guys. the project Name was “project youNg guN: 1971 super bee budget build” aNd their Names were steve sigel aNd ryaN pastraNa from millersville, pa, usa. they were both 17 years old at the start of this project aNd they were workiNg with a budget of $5,000 to get this car from a rusty rolliNg project to oN the road aNd fiNished. the guys did most if Not, all of their owN work oN the car. they eveN took oN the weldiNg aNd fabricatiNg to get rid of the rust caNcer the car had themselves. steve eveN paiNted the car himself. maNy people stepped up to the plate aNd doNated parts for the car to help the guys out. they used 3 differeNt parts cars duriNg the build. after selliNg parts from those cars aNd tradiNg other various parts, they completed their super bee Not too loNg ago while stayiNg oN their budget. the coolest part was, while shariNg pictures of the project as it weNt, they kept track of every dollar speNt aNd

where it was speNt aNd shared that too. by shariNg this iNformatioN they have helped other people who are lookiNg to get their project oN the road with a tight budget. youNg guNs really are a special type of breed aNd the Next geNeratioN of the hobby. as loNg as there are cars out there, there will always be a youNg guN to coNtiNue oN with the hobby, passioN aNd lifestyle.

secoNd times the charmstory by blair degeNsteiN

my quest for the right car started about 6 moNths ago. i had just fiNished appraisiNg a 1951 chevy paNel delivery hot rod truck that was beiNg used to promote a busiNess & i thought what a great idea, a hot rod that grabs lots of at teNtioN aNd is great to eNjoy aNd take everywhere. so my jourNey begaN. i started lookiNg for early sedaN delivery’s from the 20’s up to the 50’s. my search eNded wheN i came across this fully restored 1961 chevrolet parkwood 6 passeNger statioN wagoN iN milwaukie, oregoN.

it wasN’t what i started lookiNg for but it eNded up beiNg the best choice of all. this is the kiNd of car that all geNeratioNs seem to appreciate at some level or aNother. i had always waNted a 1961 chevy but Never ever thought it would be statioN wagoN but the quality of work aNd choice of colors really hooked me but it almost Never eNded up happeNiNg at all. the car was advertised for sale by a specialty car dealer iN milwaukie, oregoN. it was listed for sale for about 3 weeks theN disappeared, i assumed it had sold. i coNtiNued to look for somethiNg uNique aNd occasioNally looked at adds iN oregoN. it was about three moNths later, the ’61 reappears for sale, i couldN’t believe my luck. i immediately called the New owNer oNly to fiNd out that he had bought the car with the iNteNtioN of addiNg some additioNal features aNd theN to resell it. i made arraNgemeNts to view the car a few days later at his busiNess iN milwaukie aNd realiZed iNstaNtly that i had to have the car aNd as they say, the rest is history.

i have maNy ideas of what i would like to do to make the car more eNjoyable. i would like to add a viNtage air coNditioNiNg system as well as expaNdiNg the stereo system. i would also like to upgrade the motor with a Nice mild fuel iNjected corvet te ls1 or ls2 aNd theN upgrade the rear eNd with a few extra forward gears. i thiNk these upgrades would briNg it full circle for performaNce & reliability as well as fuel ecoNomy makiNg it the perfect vehicle for my busiNess.
