The BBC's Soutik Biswas travels to a remote region in the eastern Orissa state, where it all began, to explore the touchy issue of religious conversions
Sixty-year-old Indian farmer Kanduri Digal says he converted to Christianity a
decade ago because he found "it a very useful religion". For most of his life, Digal languished
at the bottom of India's caste pyramid as a Hindu untouchable. But he doesn't say he escapedHinduism because the caste system gave him a raw deal. Instead, he says, Christianity offered him a
road to redemption. "When I was a Hindu I was stealing, doing bad to others. I have become a better
man after I converted. Salvation is ensured in Christianity," he says. Forty-year-old government peon
Ashok Kumar Behera, who converted to Christianity 18 years ago, says he changed faith to get some
"peace of life and salvation". "The Bible says when we die we go to heaven. The holy book also lays
down the instructions about life in detail, unlike Hindu scriptures," he says. However, Digal and
Behera have now discovered that in the Kandhamal district of Orissa state where they live their leap
of faith has a darker side to it.
They are among the over 13,000 Hindu untouchables-turned-Christian converts who
continue to live in 11 camps in the district a month after a wave of anti-Christian violence
convulsed the area. Most have fled their homes which were looted and torched by mobs shouting

pro-Hindu slogans. At the root of the confrontation is an age-old rivalry between the majority local
Hindu-tribes people and the converted Christians over land, affirmative action benefits and identity
rights.
TOUCHY ISSUETOUCHY ISSUETOUCHY ISSUETOUCHY ISSUE
But last month, it took an overtly religious turn after the killing of an octogenarianHindu holy man who was a working among the tribes people, railing against conversions andarranging for reconversions of people returning to Hinduism. It is still unclear who killed
Laxmananda Saraswati. But angry tribes-people turned on their Christian neighbours triggering off a
spiral of violence that left over 20 dead. Radical Hindu groups say Christian missionaries and NGO's
are responsible for the situation. One of them, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, says in a pamphlet that the
"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BE"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BE"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BE"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BEEN TRYING TOEN TRYING TOEN TRYING TOEN TRYING TO
CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...The tribals in the region over the last few years have been despising conversion due
to the attacks on their cultural moorings by the Christian community". Christian groups denythese allegations and say nobody is being converted against his or her will. Religious conversions
have been a touchy issue here. Orissa is an overwhelmingly Hindu majority state, and at just 3.8% ofthe population, Christians make up the largest minority. Changing faith has also become a messy issue
thanks to a controversial 31-year-old state law which outlaws religious conversion by "force,
inducement and fraud". It also instructs that every case of conversion has to be reported to and
recorded by the local authorities. It is clear that the law was introduced primarily to stop the state's
Hindu untouchables and tribes people, who comprise 39% of Orissa's population, from converting to
Christianity.
The punishment for converting these groups illegally isThe punishment for converting these groups illegally isThe punishment for converting these groups illegally isThe punishment for converting these groups illegally isharsher than for converting groupharsher than for converting groupharsher than for converting groupharsher than for converting groups such as higher caste Hindus..s such as higher caste Hindus..s such as higher caste Hindus..s such as higher caste Hindus..
But both Christians and Hindus have flouted the law openly: only two cases ofconversions - both, from Hinduism to Christianity, have been officially recorded in Kandhamalin the last 31 years! But the Christian population in the district has gone up by 56% between 1991 and
2001 alone, over four times the average population growth in the district. The Hindu population has
grown by a more modest 12% during the same period. Orissa has a long and chequered history of
Christian proselytising. On the one hand, large numbers of untouchables and tribes people have
converted to escape poverty and deprivation. It is a moot point whether that has worked: nearly 80%
of the people in Kandhamal, for example, continue to live under the poverty line, according to official
records. At the same time, Christian zealots have sometimes operated with impunity: a state pastors
gathering in November 1996 openly made a call to "win Orissa for Christ by 2000". And, in 1993, the
police booked 21 pastors in Nowrangpur district for carrying out "induced" conversions, invoking the
conversion law. It is another matter, as some analysts argue, whether the state should get in the way of
personal faith and keep tabs on and demand explanation from a person who is changing faith.
'DANGEROUS PATERNALISM''DANGEROUS PATERNALISM''DANGEROUS PATERNALISM''DANGEROUS PATERNALISM'"Crude evangelism is a reality. We may also be uncomfortable at the fact that
people seem to convert for all kinds of inducements,"says political scientist Pratap Bhanu Mehta."But as a mature society we have to recognise this fact. The state cannot be in the business of savinganyone's soul. Why people convert is a matter entirely for them to decide. There is a dangerous paternalism
if we give the state the right to decide whether someone's conversion is genuine and when it is not. "Forthat matter why not also inquire into the fact whether staying in any faith is often due to inducement,
coercion and false representations as well?" he asks. Whatever the reason, the religious fault lines in
Kandhamal are now beginning to look ominous and threatening to tear asunderRemaining part of this
article has been omitted to save the readers from boredom. Those wishing to read fullarticle can get it from the above referred BBC News !!, Comments by Major Minhas)

Musharraf) and MQM with its leader stationed at London, Chaudhry Brothers (Ch. Shujjat Hussain and
Ch. Pervaiz Elahi) and PPP.
2. MQMs main adversary has been PPP. There has been no time when each ofthem did not claim to be the sole representative of people of Sindh. The basis of MQM was the bulk
immigration from India at the time of independence of Pakistan. Once established at the capital MQM
proceeded to secure the hold of, initially Hyderabad and then the entire Sindh. Larkana was the centre of
activity of Shahnawaz Bhutto, father of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Shaheed. It was Larkana (Garhi Khuda
Baksh) which became the hub of political activity and the burial place of Bhutto dynasty.

That was the moment when behind the scene diplomacy passed the feeler, that only she could save the world by joining Israel and Iraqs attack on Iran. She proved her
greatness by declining the suggestion on basis of her religion. Entire world knew that though she
was a non-practicing Shia yet she could not stoop so low. This led President Bush (II) and its

Benazir Shaheed had mentioned these points in her speeches and writings.

Centurys worst incident of blasphemy,
What is the underlying cause? Why was the Christian club formed?
Have you ever analysed how cat relishes her victory over dieing mouse?Crusade Wars started, after 9/11/2001 by the unfortunate Bush, continues even today
i.e.2008, seven years after the incident which according to some was planned and executed by Israeli
agents who saved Israelis working in Twin Towers and en-cashed the disappearance of those who
could not either get out in time or could not be informed.
Crusade Wars are being lead by1-America 2-Americas previous colonist and present stanch ally Britain
3- European Union i.e. Greatest Colonists of Human History, France, Germany,
Britain etc which constitute Christian clubwhose armies and cooperators are responsible for killing hundreds of thousands Muslims inAfrica in the name of democracy who is the greatest hurdle in the way of Turkey becoming member
of EU. It is the same dual policy under which hundreds of thousands of African were chained and
taken to America, the then colony of the then Great BritainHunger, intense violence & cruelty
The dead were thrown into the sea serving as a feed to fish
Britain even today is not prepared to utter a single word of apology,All the colonists put together can not produce a single example of barbarity reaching somewhere near this inhuman conduct.
Opposed to the above The holocaust the mass killing ofJews, the authenticity of which is challenged by its opponents & termed
concoction, yet various countries of Christian club are enacting lawsSo that any one challenging authenticity of holocaust could be arrested and put behind barswithout giving any chance to prove his/her innocence. Three Big initiators of Crusade wars have neither
taken any notice of Israels ever increasing Atomic capability nor will they in future. Each of the three biginitiators of Crusade wars along with
India, installed Governments of Iraq and Afghanistan
Has all along insisted that Pakistan should do more to crush the terrorists (freedom fighters intheir own land) and also that Pakistan is a first-line ally of America This is Americas centuriesold triedtechnique of punishing her first line allies to destroy their countries and them too when they are no moreneeded.

Since then, casualty figures had dwindled in Gaza with Egypt attempting to broker some sort of ceasefire, theBBC's Tim Franks reports. Now the chances of that appear slimmer than ever, our Middle East correspondent

Hamas, Israeli helicopters launched four missiles. Earlier, three Israeli soldiers were killed and three woundedwhen Hamas gunmen approached the security fence near the Nahal Oz crossing, Israel's army said. The deaths
were Israel's highest daily toll in the area since 2006. Pursuing two Hamas fighters who had planted a bomb,
the soldiers were ambushed by a second Hamas group lying in wait, Israel's military said. Hamas said it had
mounted a "sophisticated ambush".
'Dangerous warfare'In other violence throughout the day, a Reuters cameraman was among three

several hundred metres away, Reuters adds. It goes blank about two seconds after the shell is fired - apparently
at the moment it hit the car. An Israeli military official later expressed regret at the cameraman's death.

says BBC defence and security correspondent Rob Watson. A recent Israeli study by a research group
with close ties to Israel's defence establishment said Hamas was currently engaged in the broadest and
most significant military build-up in its history. Some generals argue a major Israeli incursion will
eventually be needed to prevent Hamas growing even stronger militarily. But they also fear the possible

The Iraqi government has replaced the commanders of the army and
police forces in the southern city of Basra. The move comes weeks after an assault that aimed to disarmShia militias in the city. The operation was criticised by US commanders as poorly planned and failed to
achieve its stated aims. (It, being based on purchasing of loyalties, had to fail!!, Comments by
Major Minhas)

That operation ground to a halt when the army faced considerable resistance from the

said they will not sign a partial deal. Mr Olmert has promised to resign after his Kadima party chooses a newleader in a primary election on 17 September. The prime minister announced his intention in July following
months of pressure resulting from the opening of a police inquiry into money he received from a US-Israelibusinessman. He denies any wrongdoing.

Mr Olmert's spokesman, Mark Regev, said his premature departure from office"would not interfere with the discussions" as the two leaders sat down for the latest of the meetings theyhave held every few weeks since the Annapolis peace conference last November.

US President George W Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice nextmonth, before he left office. Theyhoped such an agreement would show that progress had been made and indicate where the negotiations couldbe picked up by Mr Olmert's successor. However, an aide to
Mr Abbas, Yasser Abed Rabbo, insisted the Palestinian negotiating team would reject"any partial deal". After the talks, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told reporters in the West Bank

rushing the process, saying attempts to "bridge gaps prematurely" can lead to misunderstandings and

The BBC's Soutik Biswas travels to a remote region in the eastern Orissa state, where it all began, to explore the touchy issue of religious conversions
Sixty-year-old Indian farmer Kanduri Digal says he converted to Christianity a decade
ago because he found "it a very useful religion".For most of his life, Digal languished at the bottomof India's caste pyramid as a Hindu untouchable. But he doesn't say he escaped Hinduism because the castesystem gave him a raw deal. Instead, he says, Christianity offered him a road to redemption. "When I was a
Hindu I was stealing, doing bad to others. I have become a better man after I converted. Salvation is ensuredin Christianity," he says. Forty-year-old government peon Ashok Kumar Behera, who converted toChristianity 18 years ago, says he changed faith to get some "peace of life and salvation". "The Bible says
when we die we go to heaven. The holy book also lays down the instructions about life in detail, unlike Hinduscriptures," he says. However, Digal and Behera have now discovered that in the Kandhamal district of Orissa
state where they live their leap of faith has a darker side to it.
They are among the over 13,000 Hindu untouchables-turned-Christian converts who
continue to live in 11 camps in the districta month after a wave of anti-Christian violence convulsedthe area. Most have fled their homes which were looted and torched by mobs shouting pro-Hindu slogans. At
the root of the confrontation is an age-old rivalry between the majority local Hindu-tribes people and theconverted Christians over land, affirmative action benefits and identity rights.
TOUCHY ISSUETOUCHY ISSUETOUCHY ISSUETOUCHY ISSUEBut last month, it took an overtly religious turn after the killing of an octogenarian
Hindu holy manwho was a working among the tribes people, railing against conversions and arranging forreconversions of people returning to Hinduism. It is still unclear who killed Laxmananda Saraswati. But angry
tribes-people turned on their Christian neighbours triggering off a spiral of violence that left over 20 dead.Radical Hindu groups say Christian missionaries and NGO's are responsible for the situation. One of them,
Vishwa Hindu Parishad, says in a pamphlet that the
"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BEEN"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BEEN"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BEEN"CHRISTIANS IN THE AREA HAVE LONG BEEN
TRYING TO CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...TRYING TO CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...TRYING TO CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...TRYING TO CONVERT THE TRIBAL POPULATION...The tribals in the region over the last few years have been despising conversion due to
the attacks on their cultural moorings by the Christian community". Christian groups deny theseallegations and say nobody is being converted against his or her will. Religious conversions have been a
touchy issue here. Orissa is an overwhelmingly Hindu majority state, and at just 3.8% of the population,Christians make up the largest minority. Changing faith has also become a messy issue thanks to a
controversial 31-year-old state law which outlaws religious conversion by "force, inducement and fraud". It
also instructs that every case of conversion has to be reported to and recorded by the local authorities. It is

clear that the law was introduced primarily to stop the state's Hindu untouchables and tribes people, whocomprise 39% of Orissa's population, from converting to Christianity.

But both Christians and Hindus have flouted the law openly: only two cases of
conversions - both, from Hinduism to Christianity, have been officially recorded in Kandhamal inthe last 31 years! But the Christian population in the district has gone up by 56% between 1991 and 2001
alone, over four times the average population growth in the district. The Hindu population has grown by
a more modest 12% during the same period.

It is a moot point whether that has worked: nearly 80% of the people in Kandhamal,
for example, continue to live under the poverty line, according to official records. At the same time,Christian zealots have sometimes operated with impunity: a state pastors gathering in November 1996
openly made a call to "win Orissa for Christ by 2000". And, in 1993, the police booked 21 pastors in
Nowrangpur district for carrying out "induced" conversions, invoking the conversion law. It is another
matter, as some analysts argue, whether the state should get in the way of personal faith and keep tabs on
and demand explanation from a person who is changing faith.
'DANGEROUS PATERNALISM''DANGEROUS PATERNALISM''DANGEROUS PATERNALISM''DANGEROUS PATERNALISM'''''"Crude evangelism is a reality. We may also be uncomfortable at the fact that people
seem to convert for all kinds of inducements,"says political scientist Pratap Bhanu Mehta. "But as amature society we have to recognise this fact. The state cannot be in the business of saving anyone's soul. Whypeople convert is a matter entirely for them to decide. There is a dangerous paternalism if we give the state the
right to decide whether someone's conversion is genuine and when it is not. "For that matter why not alsoinquire into the fact whether staying in any faith is often due to inducement, coercion and false representations
as well?" he asks. Whatever the reason, the religious fault lines in Kandhamal are now beginning to look
ominous and threatening to tear as under two indigenous communities who have lived in mixed villages for
centuries.
Things are so bad that a spokesman of Orissa's Christian community, Dr
Swaroopananda Patra, has been given, of all things, a bullet proof jacket by the police to protecthimself. "The Christians are so angry in Kandhamal that they want gun licenses to protect themselves. Iam telling them to restrain themselves," he says. And in Kandhamal, the head of an influential Hindu
tribes people organisation sits in his house-cum-office surrounded by two bare-chested armed constables
of the local police. "I am scared that this has become a religious war now.
I don't want our tribal agenda to be hi-jacked by religious interests.," says
Lambodhar Kanhar. Kandhamal, clearly, needs a respite from proselytizers of all kinds to return tonormalcy and calm. After which, the people and authorities can begin sorting out the real issues.
