School of Biomedical Sciences

Seminar Series 2019 Friday, 26th July 9-10am in Harry Perkins North McCusker

Auditorium, with light refreshments to follow

A/Prof Pixley is a is physician scientist in the School of Biomedical Sciences, where she leads a group whose research interests and expertise include macrophage biology, cancer biology, cell motility and invasion, breast cancer, optical and super resolution microscopy. Dr Pixley’s laboratory investigates signalling pathways that regulate macrophage adhesion and motility using a broad range of microscopic and biochemical techniques. Tumour associated macrophages encourage tumour invasion and metastasis by activating cancer cell motility and digging tunnels for cancer cells to move through tissue barriers. Examination of macrophage-specific motility and invasion proteins should help to identify potential therapeutic targets in the treatment of cancer. Dr Pixley also collaborates extensively to investigate the regulation of macrophage differentiation, adhesion and motility. For more information, contact Nina McCarthy, [email protected]

High Frequency Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging System- Vevo LAZR-XNow available at the Centre for Microscopy, Characterization and Analysis!

The Vevo LAZR-X is available for use at the CMCA, Level 3, Harry Perkins Institute, QEII

The Vevo LAZR-X Multi-modal Imaging System combines ultra-high frequency ultrasound and photoacoustics into one platform for high resolution anatomical, functional and molecular imaging.

This preclinical imaging platform helps you visualize your data at high resolution like never before:

• Vessel walls appear sharper;• Pre-palpable lesions are clearly

delineated;• Rib shadows are reduced.

With a powerful combination of high frame rates and advanced image processing, the Vevo LAZR-X imaging system reduces speckle noise and artifacts while preserving and enhancing critical information for small animal in vivo studies.

Join some of Perth’s leading researchers at this free community health event as they discuss:

Our speakers

Prof Jonathan Hodgson, Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Edith Cowan University. Jonathan is a nutritionist who has studied the effects of food components on cardiovascular health. He will talk about current dietary guidelines, risk factors for

disease and how food can help prevent chronic diseases.

How what we eat can help prevent chronic disease.

How our diet influences our gut health.

Dietary guidelines.

The chemistry of bioactive components in food. It’s time to rethink our ideas about ‘antioxidants’.

A panel discussion and Q&A session will follow.

Prof Kevin Croft, School of Biomedical Science, The University of Western Australia. Kevin is a biochemist and will discuss the chemistry of some food components and how they work in the body. We used to think some of these components were ‘antioxidants’ but we are beginning to understand their role is more complex.

Dr Cathy Bondonno, Research Fellow, Human Nutrition at Edith Cowan University and Chair of the Nutrition Society of Australia (Perth Group). Cathy will share the findings of studies carried out at the RPH Research Foundation, including how eating apples and green leafy vegetables can improve vascular health.

Did you know eating an apple a day really can keep the doctor away? Find out why at this FREE event. Complimentary blood pressure checks will also be available.

Free Community Event proudly brought to you by the RPH Research Foundation
