From the Editors...Dear Friends,

2013 has seen a lot of exciting developments for the Boat Club. Chief amongst these is the redeveloped boathouse including eight new Concept 2 ergs to make those long winter sessions all the more enjoyable... The new layout upstairs makes much better use of the internal space, and the extension shed will soon be finished. Furthermore, the crews have put in a good summer of work, and a solid term of training. There has also been some exciting news on the Campaign for the Hall Boat Club, which we will leave Richard to explain in his Chairman’s Report on page 4. In the meantime, we wish you a very merry Christmas, and best wishes for 2014!

Summer RowingOver the summer months, myself and fellow 1st eight rower Tom Hole, participated in a number of external regattas as members of composite crews formed with other Oxford colleges. Initially drafted in as substitutes to a Hertford 8, after a single practice outing we found ourselves as stern pair for the Coronation 60th Anniversary Regatta. Racing in the shadow of Windsor castle, we made easy progress to the final, beating Exeter college by several lengths in our semi-final. In the final we faced a strong crew from Oriel college, including double Olympic medallist Malcolm Howard. In tough conditions we held them stroke for stroke until halfway. However, entering the second half of the race we encountered some rough water. Showing their superior strength and experience Oriel put in a push and moved away to win by two lengths. Buoyed by the strong showing on the back of such little preparation, plans were formed to enter more regattas. In the following months we entered Reading Town Regatta, Kingston Regatta and Molesey Regatta with a “Hertford Hall” coxed four, enjoying mixed success. The undoubted highlight of the summer racing was the two day Oxford City Royal Regatta. Racing as part of a Teddy Hall-Hertford- Green Templeton super composite we put home advantage to good use by winning the IM2 eights on the Saturday. With a slight line-up change the following day we also collected wins in the sprint eights event and the IM3 eights. This success was a sweet reward for the hard work we had put in throughout the year.

In August, an intrepid group of Teddy Hall rowers joined forces with counterparts from Lincoln college in an attempt to row from Oxford to London in a day. The aim was to raise funds for the local Cheney Falcon Rowing Club, the only state school rowing

club in Oxfordshire. Setting off from Boathouse Island at 4:30am, the group were in high spirits despite the daunting task which lay ahead. Initially progress was good, reaching our checkpoints ahead of schedule. However as the day wore on and river traffic increased we found ourselves held up, queing for long periods at locks. It became apparent that we were not going to reach our target, as we had a deadline of 10pm for the trailer to pick up the boat. Reluctant to give up after so much effort, we set the new target of Maidenhead which would represent a distance of 100km. Clearing our 21st and final lock at Boulters Lock the end was in sight. Determined to finish in style, the crew completed the last five hundred metres with what felt like the most beautiful rate 35 piece. Landing at Maidenhead Rowing Club we received the warmest of welcomes from the members, who we joined in the bar for a few well-earned pints before catching the train home. Alongside the new exciting capital developments this year at the Boat Club, the men have a new coaching team, with Geordie Macleod (Blue Boat 2013) leading the seniors and later the 1st eight and Sybren Hoogland currently taking the novices before overseeing the 2nd eight in Hilary and Trinity terms. Training so far has been going well, we have 8 returning seniors bolstered by 2 experienced freshers. In our sessions Geordie has brought a more technical approach to coaching, getting the rowers to think more about what they are doing and I’m sure this will pay off when it comes time to race. We also have two rowers off trialling with the university lightweights. Joe MacKay and Marcus Henglein, who both started as freshers last year, have made the final squad

of 20 and are both well placed to make one of the lightweight boats this year. Freshers week saw a strong recruitment campaign with the boat club hosting many events, our boathouse BBQ made the top ten list of events in Oxford that day and we easily had the best stall at the college Freshers’ Fair. These efforts were not in vain and the men have a promising group of novices and we should be able to field a strong boat for Christ Church regatta. The start of term also seen the arrival of the new men’s Filippi eight and although it’s being stored safely on the top rack at the moment, the men are very much looking forward to getting it down and doing some damage with it at Eights!

Chairman’s ReportFunding the Hall rowing programme – a new initiative between the College and The Friends

The Friends of the Boat Club was founded in 1992, rapidly taking on responsibility for funding the ongoing financial needs of the Boat Club. Over these years, the Friends have fundraised to: •replace all old equipment with new •advise on and appoint coaches for the men’s and women’s squads •select locations and fund training camps •advise on and appoint sponsors

This year alone has seen expenditure by the Friends of £50,000 on two new eights, eight new ergometers, coaching expenses and training camps.

The Friends FundFundraising by the Friends started in 1992 and has grown from gifted donations, sponsorship, and interest. Following the successful 150th Anniversary Appeal the fund now stands at just under £310,000, after this year’s expenses. Our projections show that this is not enough, and within ten years, and at the annual average level of expenses, combined with very low interest, the fund will be nearly exhausted. A capital sum of £750,000 is needed within ten years for rowing support to be maintained from interest accrued. This is the same capital sum as Jesus College Cambridge, and exactly half of what is targeted by Christ Church.

The plan from the CollegeEarlier this year, the College and representatives of the Friends met to discuss fundraising needs. At that point

the Friends were considering how best to reach the new £750,000 target over the ten year period. At that meeting, the Development Office proposed a joint effort, with the College including the Friends fundraising campaign within the College plan, for the next four years. Agreement to this proposal has been reached, and hopefully we will now reach our £750,000 in less than ten years.

The benefits •Rowing at the Hall is now clearly supported by the College •The new target may be reached within the ten year period •Equipment, coaching and training camp needs remain secure •The Friends will continue to support, advise upon, and administer the rowing programme •The Friends continue regular dialogue with its membership •The Friends continue to raise sponsorship funds, and look for donations from outside the Hall constituency.

We now have a refurbished Boat House, as a result of the Hall’s support of the 150th Anniversary of the Boat Club. Finally, many of us, and particularly members of the Friends of the Boat Club, believe that the standing of the Hall is in some part enhanced by thriving and successful sport. The Boat Club, its welfare and its success plays a significant part in maintaining what we all know as ‘Hall Spirit’. In squad news, Suzanne Cole, Women’s captain 2010/2011, was the second fastest lightweight sculler in the Scullers’ Head, and 8th fastest woman overall. She started sculling this summer! This is an amazing result in which OUWLRC rowers were first, second and third. Suzanne is a key member of OUWLRC and SEHBC, and we wish her the best of luck for the Boat Race, and look forward to her return in April.
