MERCY’S MEASURE “Give Comfort to My People”

The readings for the Second Sunday of Advent have us waiting once again, but this time, instead of trying to stay alert, we are assured that the power of God will accomplish all that He has promised. In all the readings, we are met with images of the power of God. God comes to rule; God comes at the time of His choosing; God comes to baptize with the Holy Spirit. These images tell us that our “waiting” is not passive. Rather, we are “waiting” to encounter the power of God, the renewal of heaven and earth, the gift of the Spirit. Our waiting is marked by our conversion from sin, not by our ability to simply keep watch. Like God, who comes in power, we, too, are actively involved, looking at how we can change in order to more fully welcome the Christ. During the pandemic, most of our leaders tried to keep us in quarantine, to wait in “hiding” until a vaccine might be developed. They asked us to do nothing or as little as possible so as not to spread the disease. The only thing they asked us to do—wear a mask—was protested against by many as an infringement upon their “liberty”. These are the arguments that were used against seat belt laws back in the 1980’s, but no one refutes their ability to save lives. Those laws are accepted; why fight this law? On the other hand, Advent is a time of great activity for a Christian, and I do not mean decorating the house or going shopping for presents. Although most people think of Santa Claus only as someone who gives presents to children, we should draw from his example in order to make this Advent more meaningful. Of course, I am speaking of the real Saint Nicholas, whose life was spent helping the needy and providing from his own resources for those who had none. Since today is the feast of St. Nicholas, it is most appropriate to use his example to guide us on our Advent journey. The reading from Isaiah today begins, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God.” In all the Gospels, in all the books of the Bible, where is the power of God seen most clearly except when God is giving comfort to His people? The Israelites at the Red Sea, crossing the Jordan, King David as he hides from Saul, the Maccabees as they rebel against the Greeks, and Jesus healing the blind, the lepers, the deaf, answering the cries of fathers and mothers over their children all give witness that the power of God is most powerfully expressed by the comfort God brings to those in need. What more poignant words are there than: “Jesus, have pity on me!” Likewise, our Advent growth should be marked by the way we comfort those in need. Families who are hurting emotionally from the coronavirus, parents who cannot afford gifts for their children, people in Africa who long to learn their faith, the homeless, the solitary, even the people who wait anxiously about the future of their parish because of Renew My Church: all these are people in need of comfort. If our community wants to see the power of God, then we should put our faith into action by providing for those in need. If you cannot buy a gift or food for someone on your own, a small increase in your contributions would provide the money the Church will spend to help others. Whether food or gifts or prayers, we are called to comfort God’s people this Advent.

LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “Consuelen a Mi Pueblo”

Las lecturas para el Segundo Domingo de Adviento nos tienen esperando una vez más, pero esta vez, en lugar de tratar de mantenernos alertas, estamos seguros de que el poder de Dios logrará todo lo que ha prometido. En todas las lecturas, nos encontramos con imágenes del poder de Dios. Dios viene a gobernar; Dios viene en el momento de Su elección; Dios viene a bautizar con el Espíritu Santo. Estas imágenes nos dicen que nuestra “espera” no es pasiva. Más bien, estamos

“esperando” encontrar el poder de Dios, la renovación del cielo y de la tierra, el don del Espíritu. Nuestra espera está marcada por nuestra conversión del pecado, no por nuestra capacidad de simplemente permanecer vigilantes. Al igual que Dios, quien viene en poder, nosotros también estamos involucrados activamente, mirando cómo podemos cambiar para recibir más plenamente a Cristo. Durante la pandemia, la mayoría de nuestros líderes trataron de mantenernos en cuarentena, en espera “escondidos” hasta que se pudiera desarrollar una vacuna. Nos pidieron que no hiciéramos nada o lo menos posible para no propagar la enfermedad. Lo único que nos pidieron hacer —usar una máscara— fue protestado por muchos como una violación de su “libertad”. Estos son los mismos argumentos que se utilizaron contra las leyes del cinturón de seguridad en la década de 1980; sin embargo, nadie refuta su capacidad de salvar vidas. Esas leyes son aceptadas; ¿pero por qué luchar contra esta ley? Por otro lado, el Adviento es un momento de gran actividad para un cristiano, y no me refiero a decorar la casa o comprar regalos de Navidad. Aunque la mayoría de la gente piensa en Santa Claus sólo como alguien que da regalos a los niños, debemos seguir su ejemplo para hacer este Adviento más significativo. Por supuesto, estoy hablando del verdadero San Nicolás, cuya vida dedicó a ayudar a los necesitados y proporcionar de sus propios recursos a los que no tenían ninguno. Dado que hoy es la fiesta de San Nicolás, es más apropiado utilizar su ejemplo para guiarnos en nuestro viaje de Adviento. La lectura de Isaías hoy comienza: “Consuelen, dice Yavé, tu Dios, consuelen a mi pueblo”. En todos los Evangelios, en todos los libros de la Biblia, ¿dónde se ve más claramente el poder de Dios, excepto cuando Dios está dando consuelo a Su pueblo? Familias que están sufriendo emocionalmente por el coronavirus, padres que no pueden comprar regalos para sus hijos, personas en África que anhelan aprender de su fe, los indigentes, los aislados, incluso las personas que esperan ansiosamente el futuro de su parroquia debido al Proceso Renueva Mi Iglesia: todas ellas son personas necesitadas de consuelo. Si nuestra comunidad quiere ver el poder de Dios, entonces debemos poner nuestra fe en acción al proveer para los necesitados. Si no puede comprar un regalo o comida para alguien por su propia cuenta, un pequeño aumento en sus contribuciones proporcionaría el dinero que la Iglesia gastaría para ayudar a los demás. Ya sea comida, regalos u oraciones, estamos llamados a consolar al pueblo de Dios este Adviento.

We would like to encourage families to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life and to ask their children if they have an interest in learning more about a religious vocation. Each week, a family at Mass will be invited to take home the “Vocation Chalice and Paten” which comes from Jerusalem. Each day, we ask the family to say a special vocations prayer, to pray for our priests, our deacons, the religious sisters, and missionaries like Father Zacharias in Tanzania. If you are interested in bringing the Vocation Chalice and Paten to your home, please call the Rectory for more information.
