SECOND ARAB IMPACT CRATERING

AND ASTROGEOLOGY CONFERENCE (AICAC II) 13-20 November 2011, CASABLANCA, MOROCCO

The Faculty of Sciences, Casablanca Hassan II University, in partnership with the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS) and the Arab Geologist Association (AGA), organizes the 2nd ARAB IMPACT CRATERING AND ASTROGEOLOGY CONFERENCE (AICAC II). The conference will open in the evening of 13 November 2011 and involves talks on 14 and 15 November. This is followed by a 5-day excursion through Morocco. This conference comes after the first AICAC meeting that was initiated by the AUASS and took place at the University of Jordan in Amman on 9-11 November 2009. AICAC I was a highly successful meeting with participants from 22 countries, including 6 Arab countries. AICAC II aims at establishing cooperation between well-established groups in the fields of Impact Cratering and Astrogeology and researchers from the Middle East and North Africa, where many impact craters exist and numerous meteorites have been collected. The conference will be a unique opportunity for Arab researchers to meet experts of the analysis of terrestrial impact structures and meteorite collections and will promote exchanges about the most advanced techniques for the characterization of shocked material. The conference will increase awareness in Arab countries, where meteorites abound and impact craters exist or have yet to be discovered, but where the scientific importance of this research field has not been systematically pursued yet. The objectives are to stimulate careful documentation of impact craters, to promote new research in Astrogeology and Meteoritics, and to increase interest among universities and scientific institutions in the Arabic countries.

SUMMARISED CONFERENCE PROGRAM: Registration will start at 18:30 in the evening of Sunday, 13th November 2011, with a reception and the opening ceremony in the Val d’Anfa Hotel. Registration will continue through November 14 and 15, 2011. Oral sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday; posters will be on display throughout 13th to 15th November, and a dedicated poster session will be scheduled for the afternoon of 15 November, prior to the gala dinner at the Moroccan restaurant “Basmane” that is located in the Val d’Anfa Hotel which is very close to the Hotel Suisse Conference presentations will be held on Monday 14th November in the Bibliothèque Mohamed Sekkat, Hassan II University, and Val D’Anfa Hotel on Tuesday 15th November. On Monday 14th, a transportation service from hotels to Bibliothèque Mohamed Sekkat will be provided. The bus will leave the Hotel Val d’Anfa at 7h30 in the morning and be back at the end of the conference talks about 18h30. SUMMARISED FIELD TRIP PROGRAM: Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 November are reserved for a geological and cultural tour of Morocco. The route planned will connect Casablanca-Rabat-Fes-Erfoud-Rissani-Merzouga-Ouarzazate-Marrakech. Amongst the sites to be visited are the Old City of Fes (World Heritage), the High Atlas Mountains, the Sahara desert and fossiliferous sites around Erfoud and Merzouga with its enormous sand dunes, Ouarzazate Kasbah, and the Marrakech imperial city. A visit of the silver mine Imiter near Tineghir city in the South of Morocco is scheduled on Friday 18th November. A visit of the Atlas Golf Marrakech Museum, Cultural center and observatory with its 600 mm telescope (the first one in Arabic World and the second in Africa) will take place on Saturday 19th November in the evening. The geology of Morocco will be descript and discussed during the tour. The maximum number of participants is 40; allocation of field trip places will be on a first-come (confirmation of participation, payment of participation fee) basis. Participation fees for the field trip are 550 Euros for five days and nights, including the last night accommodation in Casablanca. This includes bus transport, accommodation, all meals, as well as cool drinks during travel.

DETAILED FIELD TRIP PROGRAM: Day 1-Wednesday, 16/11/2011 – Casablanca/Fès 300 Kms: Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Fès at 7:00. Arrival at 11h00 and the beginning of the visit of the most authentic of the Imperial Cities: Karaouiyine mosque, Medersa Attarin. Lunch at a former palace in the heart of the medina. After lunch continue the visit by Moulay Idriss and Bab Boujloud, then visit the new city: the Merinides Tombs and stop outside the Royal Palace. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Fès.

BAB BOUJELOUD/FES

Day 2-Tursday, 17/11/2011: Fès/Midelt/Erfoud/Merzouga 530 Kms. Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Erfoud at 7/00 through the small city Ifrane (called the small Swiss of Morocco) known by snow in winter and pleasant weather in summer time; Azrou and Midelt for lunch. After lunch continue by Errachidia. Stop at blue source of Meski, then continuation to Erfoud. Visit the cuting and polishing of the famous Devonian fossilious limestones. The group leaves the bus and embarks on 4x4 cars with drivers for Merzouga at 50 km from Erfoud. According to arrival time there is an opportunity to watch the sunset, a unique show in this beautiful region of Morocco. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in front of the beauty of the desert in Merzouga.

MERZOUGA SAND DUNES

Day 3 - Friday, 18/11/2011 - Merzouga / Erfoud / Tineghir / Ouarzazate 400 Km. Wake up very early to watch the sunrise. Breakfast at the hotel and back to Erfoud to leavethe 4x4 cars and continue by bus to visit Imiter Silver Mine. Then go to Tineghir, the city of roses, and to the Todra gorges cut into the red rock, 30m wide and 250m high. Walk across the river and lunch at a restaurant. Continuation to Ouarzazate. According to arrival time possibility to visit Ouarzazate and its Kasbah of Taourirt. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.




OUARZAZATE KASBAH

Day 4 - Saturday, 19/11/2011 - Ouarzazate / Marrakech 250 Km. Early breakfast at the hotel then departure for Marrakech across the High Atlas and its natural beauty. Arrival and lunch at a restaurant, then visit of the Menara Gardens and Koutoubia mosque. Dinner at the hotel then departure to the Atlas Golf Marrakech Cultural center, Museum and Observatory to see the Minerals, fossils and meteorites exhibition and observe the sky by the new very sensitive 600 mm telescope. This telescope is unique in the Arabic word and the second one in Africa. We will try to observe leonides.

Day 5- Sunday, 20/11/2011: Marrakech/Casablanca 240 Kms. Breakfast at the hotel. Continuation of the visit of Marrakech by Saadian Tombs, the magnificent Bahia Palace and tour of the ramparts. Lunch at a restaurant. After lunch walk through the famous Jemaa El Fna square known fory its continuous day and night entertainment. Departure for Casablanca. Arrival, dinner and overnight at the hotel.
