very year, millions of visitors attend a convention in Las Vegas. Two of the

city's largest conventions — the International Consumer Electronics Show

(CES) and the National Association of Broadcasters Show (NAB) —

combined with the annual PBS Technology Conference, make Las Vegas a

national hub for technology conventions. Vegas PBS has leveraged these

conventions by offering to demonstrate and experiment with promising new technology

and in the process, became a national leader in public safety and educational technology

applications.

For example, “datacasting” — the broadcasting of data to computers within a TV

signal – was developed by Vegas PBS as an emergency communications service. When

disasters hit, state emergency management officials can tap into our public television

transmitter to deliver messages to the public and first responders when cellular

networks are overwhelmed by customer calls and texts. Vegas PBS was the first

station to make bandwidth available to emergency responders during crises and to

provide them with preselected multimedia data in the form of blueprints, photos, key

personnel and emergency plans.

In the event of a public safety incident, Vegas PBS can securely transmit critical

information — hidden in our broadcast signal — directly to the Clark County School

District police, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department or the Southern Nevada

Counter-Terrorism Center. Vegas PBS systems were recently utilized by emergency

managers during a mercury contamination at a local public school and during the

Carpenter 1 Fire on Mount Charleston.

In part due to the success of this lifesaving application first created at Vegas PBS,

the national PBS network is currently included in a proposal that would make all PBS

stations part of the new FirstNet public safety communications system for first responders.

In addition to the emergency alerts you hear on Channel 10, Vegas PBS also uses

our television signal to send backup public safety messages to mobile cellular devices

during extreme weather conditions or AMBER alerts. The grant-funded PBS Warning,

Alert and Response Network (WARN) is used by public television stations across the

country to broadcast geo-targeted wireless emergency alert messages directly to cell

phone towers, making public television a potentially lifesaving resource, even for people

who might never turn on a television.

The public service impact of public television goes far beyond the high-quality enter-

taining and educational broadcast television programs your membership supports. The

less-visible public safety technology applications are a critical part of our mission as a

nonprofit public service media organization. The broadcast technology infrastructure

we use to transmit your favorite television programs also helps emergency management

agencies, first responders and law enforcement keep our community safe. April is

Disaster Preparedness Month, and through your support, Vegas PBS is prepared to

keep you and your loved ones safe.

The Four Sons and All Their Sons at 5 p.m.

The Four Sons are the focus of one of themost beloved and intriguing stories in theHaggadah, the book read and sung at thePassover Seder. This beloved short fable fol-lows four boys at the Seder table and howthey’re treated by their father. The fable hasbeen revised relentlessly over the centuries –in words, in art, in music – until it must beright up there with Shakespeare's playsamong the most re-interpreted tales evertold. Why so many versions? BecausePassover and its Seder are really about pass-ing on heritage – or any belief – to your chil-

dren. The documentary shows thevariety of those versions as it movesconstantly from an actual Seder toFour Sons stories in art, words andmusic to interviewees from ages 17to 70...and back to the Seder.

Gefilte Fish Chroniclesat 6 p.m.

In 1904, Abe and Minnie Dubroff immi-grated from Russia to Brooklyn where theyraised seven daughters and a son. For a cen-tury, the family has gathered at Passover andcelebrated the Seder together. Led by thethree surviving sisters, Sophie Patasnik,Peppy Barer and Rosie Groman, traditional

preparations were made as they shopped andchopped, tasted and seasoned. Using recipesnearly a century old, they began to puttogether the Gefilte Fish, Cholent, HorseRadish and Sponge Cake. This is a loving, liv-ing album of the Seder, filled with joy andlove, family films and photographs. Althoughthis is a tale about one family, it crosses cul-tural and religious lines, reminding us of howmany families develop rituals as they cele-brate holidays.

On December 14, 2012, a disturbed youngman committed a horrific mass shooting inNewtown, Connecticut, that took the lives of20 elementary school children and six educa-tors. Kim A. Snyder’s searing new documen-tary, filmed over the course of nearly threeyears, uses deeply personal, never-before-heard testimonies to relate the aftermath ofthe deadliest mass shooting of schoolchildrenin American history.Through raw and heart-breaking interviews with parents, siblings, teachers, doctors and first responders,Newtown documents a traumatized commu-nity still reeling from the senseless tragedy, fractured by grief but driven toward a senseof purpose.

There are no words of compassion or reas-surance that can bring back those who losttheir lives during the shooting at Sandy Hook

Elementary School. Instead,Snyder delves into the lives andhomes of those who remain, allof whom have been indeliblychanged by the events. They speak candidlyabout their grief, anger and disbelief overwhat occurred and their disappointment thatnothing has truly changed with regard to thecountry’s legal response to gun violence.

Volunteers are the Heart of Vegas PBS

ost people know Vegas PBS for the non-profit educational, informational

and cultural television programs broadcast on Channel 10, or on our com-

panion channels: Create, VEGAS PBS KIDS, Rewind and Jackpot! Vegas

PBS’ vision as a public service media organization is to be a leading infor-

mation technology resource, online education provider and preferred com-

munity partner for those engaged in addressing Southern Nevada issues. Beyond the air-

waves, however, are 300 individuals who dedicate their time and talents as volunteers for the

work of Vegas PBS.

Station volunteers are as diverse as our programming. They include people of all ages and

backgrounds. Some can spare a lot of time; others only a little. But one thing they all have in

common is their eagerness to serve the Vegas PBS community. We have had the unique pleas-

ure of individual volunteers as well as collaboration with volunteer groups that include colle-

giate associations, restaurants, senior centers, retired service organizations and fellow non-

profit corporations.

Volunteers provide a unique opportunity for public television stations to expand the reach

of our mission and to directly impact more community members. Volunteers are the heart of

all that we do as a public service media station. Each person plays an integral part in provid-

ing critical support so that Vegas PBS can meet the unique needs of the community. Our suc-

cess is their success.

Every department benefits from the loyalty

of our station volunteers. For instance, volun-

teers provide support at monthly station

events, quarterly live pledge drives, lead com-

munity tours, monitor the workforce computer

lab and sometimes get the chance to operate

television equipment in our studios. At the beginning of the school year, volunteers prepared

82,000 grant funded children’s books for distribution at family engagement workshops dur-

ing the 2016-2017 school year. Furthermore, volunteers have permitted Vegas PBS to reach

5,000 veterans and their families by helping at quarterly veteran’s job fairs.

Vegas PBS celebrates National Volunteer Week every April to inspire, recognize and

encourage people to engage in their communities. Vegas PBS would not be where it is today

if it were not for the continued dedication and support of our volunteers. Volunteers first

gathered to raise critical funds so that KLVX-TV could purchase PBS programs. This group,

formerly known as the Friends of Channel 10, encouraged public private funding partnerships,

funded replacement equipment and led the capital campaign for our current building. If these

volunteers had given up at any point, we would not have the Vegas PBS that you know and

love today. Thank you to each individual who has ever walked through our doors as a volun-

teer – you are the heart of Vegas PBS!

...one thing they allhave in common is theireagerness to serve theVegas PBS community.”

FRONTLINE:American PatriotTuesday, April 4 at 10 p.m.This special goes inside the battle between a ranching family in the West and

the federal government. It examines how a simmering fight over land in

Nevada and Oregon became deadly, invigorated a wider militia movement and

continues to challenge law enforcement. Drawing on deep access to key peo-

ple on all sides of the battle, the film investigates the standoffs that pro-

pelled the Bundy family into the national spotlight and the crosshairs of the

federal government. With “Patriot” groups that rallied to the Bundy’s cause

surging to levels not seen in decades, the special also reports on what's next

for the family and the wider movement around them. The effort traces the

Bundy family’s story as ranchers in the high deserts of Nevada, grazing cat-

tle for generations on federal land and ultimately, going to war against the

government.

Secret Life of Growing UpThursdays, April 6 and April 13 at 10 p.m.Discover the surprising story of human development. This two-part special

reveal how humans grow from children into adults, packed with stories of

human resilience and reinvention. For humans, the process of growing up is

the most dramatic in the animal kingdom. We’re the only species that needs

a ‘teen age’ to accommodate the extreme changes that occur in our bodies

and brains. Meet the people who illustrate how we mature: a 5-year-old girl

whose verbal skills saved her mother’s life on a call to the emergency serv-

ices and a 100-year-old woman whose yoga practice keeps her young. Each

story is presented with stunning cinematography

that makes the ordinary seem

Nature’s Miracle OrphansThursdays, April 13 - May 4 at 8 p.m.

Growing up in the wild is always rough, and young animals rely on their par-

ents to protect and nurture them through the dangerous early phase of life.

But how do young animals survive when they’ve lost their mothers? This

heartwarming special follows the work of animal rescue centers around the

world and introduces the extraordinary people who have devoted their lives

to helping all sorts of wild orphans get back on their feet. It follows the dif-

ferent stages of caring for these little heroes, from rescuing and tending to

young babies in the early stages of life to teaching

them how to look after themselves, and finally look-

ing to the future when they may one day be released

back into the wild.

Nazi Mega Weapons: Hitler’sIsland MegafortressTuesday, April 11 at 8 p.m.

In June 1940, the Nazis set foot on British soil. The

Channel Islands, a British territory since the 11th

century is now under German rule. Hitler becomes obsessed with holding

onto this small corner of Britain and demands the construction of a network

of extraordinary fortifications across the island. In his bid to hold on to the

territory, the islands become one of the most heavily fortified pieces of land

in Europe. Repeats Sunday, April 16 at 11 a.m.A P R I L 2 0 1 7 27

FRONTLINE: LastDays of SolitaryTuesday, April 18 at 9 p.m.In solitary confinement, inmates

are kept inside a cell that is approx-

imately 80 square feet for about 23

hours a day. Cells are furnished

with a bed, sink and toilet, but rarely much else. Food is delivered through a

slot in the door, and each day inmates are allowed just one hour of exercise,

in a cage. Supporters say the practice helps keep prisons safe, but according

to the medical literature, solitary confinement can also take a heavy mental

toll. Follow what happens to recently released prisoners when they go from

solitary to the streets. With extraordinary access to the Maine State Prison,

the film examines the long-term effects of solitary confinement and efforts

to reduce its use.

Queen & CountryMondays, April 17 – May 8 at 10 p.m. In 2012, England marked the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II,

Britain's second longest-reigning monarch. In the wake of the celebration of

her 60 years as British monarch, Trevor McDonald hosts a four-part series

that offers viewers a look at the customs surrounding the monarchy – from

the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace to the Queen's royal visits,

prepare for a glimpse of the greatest historic royal places. “It has been

remarkable to observe how the Queen has been able to update this remark-

able institution with a modern face with such dignity and grace and charm,”

said McDonald. “If anything, it has made the monarchy a much more solid

institution than we ever thought it could be.”

Secret Life of BabiesThursday, April 27 at 10 p.m.The first two years of our lives are the most

critical. We grow more, learn more, move more and even fight more than at

any other time in our life. How do babies communicate? And why do toddlers

have temper tantrums? This heart-warming and often surprising documen-

tary tells the story of what it’s like to be a baby from their perspective. From

a baby’s preference for sweet foods to the fact that they will have crawled

70 miles by their second birthday, the film offers fascinating insights into

babies’ development. They have abilities that we lose as adults and can sur-

vive tremendous physical shocks, adapt to traumatic changes and cope in

extreme situations.

Wild WeatherWednesday, April 26 at 10 p.m.The best way to truly understand weather is to get inside of it. This awe-

inspiring documentary takes you into the eye of the storm with revealing and

ambitious experiments that show weather as it’s never been seen before. A

global group of experts who risk their lives to demonstrate the power of

wind, water and temperature — take these simple “ingredients” and trans-

form them into something spectacular and powerful for everyone to under-

stand. Among the team’s meteorological miracles: recreating a desert dust

storm and a dangerous fire whirl; firing a probe into the center of a tornado;

creating visual representations of thunder’s destructive power; and trigger-

ing a fast-moving avalanche that uncovers secrets about the powder cloud’s

acceleration. This special will forever change

Jesus of RomeSunday, April 9 at noon

Examine new evidence – gathered from archaeologists, Roman historians, Jewish texts andinsights into the Gospels – that suggests Roman power politics led to the series of events thatresulted in the crucifixion of Jesus. This special is followed at 2 p.m. with Ottomans VersusChristians: Battle for the Mediterranean. While the Mediterranean Sea has become one oftoday’s top tourist destinations, in the 16th century it was at the center of a bloody power strug-gle between Christian Europe and the Muslim Ottoman Empire. Featuring interviews with tophistorians, live reenactments of pivotal events and visits to historical sites, this special exploresthis legendary clash of civilizations and its continuing repercussions in the modern world.

Nick Stellino: Storytellerin the KitchenMondays – Fridays and Sundays beginning April 24 at 6:30 p.m. For the first time, chef Nick Stellino invites view-

ers into his home to experience the recipes near-

est to his heart in this all-new series. Nick travels

down memory lane to revisit dishes inspired by his

childhood and family in Sicily. He demonstrates

step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow tech-

niques, bringing Italian classics to life. Each half-

hour episode revolves around a theme, which is

explored through candid moments, personal anec-

dotes and lively preparations captured in his Los

Angeles home. Featured dishes are steeped in

Mediterranean tradition and are reduced to their

essence and explained and demonstrated in a

manner that the home cook can easily manage

Great Rift Saturdays, April 1 and 8 at 8 p.m. This stunning series concludes this month.Visible from space, Africa's Great Rift Valleyruns four thousand miles from the Red Seato the mouth of the Zambezi – a diverselandscape of erupting volcanoes, forest-cladmountains, spectacular valleys, rich grass-lands, vast lakes and mighty rivers. Home tothe greatest concentration of animals onEarth - lions, crocodiles, elephants, hipposand flocks of flamingos – and pastoralistssuch as the Maasai – this is a land in con-stant geological turmoil. Great Rift takesyou to another world – a world of exoticextremes, where the forces of nature haveshaped the landscape and so created ahotbed of evolution. It is the very cradle ofmankind.

Turkish for Beginners Saturdays at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Lena's life seemed to be perfect the way it was: She lived with her littlebrother and her mother Doris, a psychotherapist. But Lena is horrifiedwhen Doris moves the family in with her Turkish boyfriend and his twokids – one a macho wannabe whose main goal in life is being cool, andthe stern, hyper-religious daughter, who masks her grief over her ownmother’s death by throwing herself into Islam. As they work to blend thetwo families, cultures clash in this critically-acclaimed German comedy.Repeats same days at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. In German with Englishsubtitles.

Independent Lens: The Last LaughSunday, April 30 at 10 p.m.

This special proceeds from the premise that

the Holocaust would seem to be an absolute-

ly off-limits topic for comedy. But is it?

Weaving together an intimate portrait of

Auschwitz survivor Renee Firestone along-

side interviews with influential comedians

and thinkers, the film shows that throughout

history, even the victims of the Nazi concen-

tration camps themselves used humor as a

means of survival and resistance. Also

included are rare archival footage of

cabarets inside the concentration camps.

Still, any use of comedy in connection with

this horror risks diminishing the suffering of

millions. So where is the line? If the

Holocaust is taboo for comedians, what are

the implications for other controversial sub-

jects – 9/11, AIDS, racism – in a society that

prizes freedom of speech?

Why We SupportVegas PBS...

The mission of the Las Vegas Philharmonic isto perform music that enriches and educates, helping to build a vibrant, culturally rich com-munity. Central to our mission is our annualYouth Concert Series (YCS). We support Vegas PBS because they recog-nize the importance of providing children witheducational programming that encourageslearning through unique and creative ways, including music and the arts.

Our goal is to inspire students in our commu-nity to become supporters of classical musicin order to sustain this art form for genera-tions to come.
