High Holy Days Logistics Committee Thanks You

Seaside Jewish Community celebrated the High Holy Days in a fashion never imagined and we pray not to have to repeat.

First and foremost, thank you to Interim Religious Leader Rabbi Kevin Bernstein and Rabbi Emeritus Beth Cohen for their sense of humor, spirit of adaptability, and tireless efforts in coordinating the beautiful services through the wonder of technology. They even managed to have Rabbi Simcha Daniel Burstyn join our congregation in worship. A special shout out to Bo Gordy-Stith, Pastor of Community and Communications at Epworth United Church, for providing the technical skills we needed to produce the services.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the High Holy Days celebration possible:

-Jennifer Rubenstein and Mr. Copy for ensuring that the information for the services was sent to everyone in a timely way.

-Fran Sneider, Anita Smulyan, and the 36 volunteers who made calls to our members to check in and extend holiday greetings.

-The 26 volunteers who helped with prayer book distribution and delivery of sweet treats.

-The seven Tashlich service leaders who each created and provided a meaningful opportunity for the participants in their groups to experience this tradition.

Many decisions had to be made early on to figure out how to be

able to come together as a community, united in spirit and worship, and yet maintain the health and safety of our congregants. The creative input and energy of many people made the services and activities surrounding the High Holy Days a successful and meaningful experience.

There were so many wonderful members who gave their time and energy to make this High Holy Days season so special and who make SJC the special place it is year-round. It truly does take a village, and we greatly appreciate the SJC village.

President’s Message – Marsha Davis

I hope that the holidays were enjoyable and fulfilling for you. Thank you to all who prepared and participated in the High Holy Day recordings. A special thanks to Rabbis Kevin Bernstein and Beth Cohen for their extraordinary creative energy in creating the beautiful services.

By including special guest Rabbi Simcha Daniel Burstyn, we were reminded of past services when we were together at Epworth. Pastor Bo Gordy-Stith worked tirelessly behind the scenes managing the technology to record and splice parts of the services together. Thank you all.

Thanks to Susan and Andy Aaronson for the highly successful drive-by prayer book pickup. Susan and her committee prepared holiday bags with apple and honey and treats to hand out with the book pickups.

So many volunteers showed up to help with the project. What a great Seaside community endeavor. Please remember to return the books on Oct. 4 at Seaside (see article on page 3).

Now we enter fall and the excitement of the completion of our reconstructed building. We wish to celebrate and dance with joy, and yet we will remain safe and plan a quiet, slow, and deliberate re-entry. Mat Ash and Stanley Silverblatt deserve a big thank you for their endless efforts in overseeing the construction and keeping it on time and in budget. Their leadership included daily visits, meetings, and even grant writing.

Message from Rabbi Kevin Once yearly, and as you read

this Newsletter, we are reminded of the sukkah as a shelter, whether we have built a sukkah at our house or look forward to spending some time in a sukkah at the synagogue.

However, the idea of a sukkah as a shelter, a shelter of peace, or a sukkat shalom is one that appears not only in our minds and hearts in our annual holiday observance but is mentioned at least once every day in our daily liturgy, on Shabbat, and on holidays, as well as in many psalms that have become part of our prayer. Jews have been speaking about shelter even before the Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter (despite exaggerated claims about Mick Jagger’s age).

How fitting this is for all of us at this time. With the High Holy Days and the beginning of the school year behind us, albeit with unusual and rocky starts, we look to the next few weeks and months with a particularly strong need and desire for shelter. Shelter from disease, shelter as a place to rest, and seek comfort from a world with a little more turmoil and tumult that we would prefer, shelter as a place where we can one day return to be together in the same place to pray, socialize, sing, and touch.

But this year, especially, the holiday of Sukkot serves to remind us particularly how close we are to regrouping once again in our own, familiar, renovated, and expanded sukkat shalom. We might even feel better about having missed the opportunity to

Return Prayer Books, Celebrate Sukkot Oct. 4

On Sunday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. we invite you to come to SJC’s parking lot to return High Holy Day prayer books, provide Help from the Heart donations, and Shake the Lulav. All visitors must wear masks, and gloves are suggested.

Return High Holy Day prayer books: Drive through SJC’s parking lot to return your machzors. If you cannot come then, please contact Susan Aaronson at [email protected] to make other arrangements.

Drop off donations: Even if you did not borrow a machzor, please plan to visit us during this time to drop off donations for the Code Purple shelters. Each evening, we are grateful for our warm beds; show your gratitude by helping those who do not have the security of a warm bed every evening. We are collecting new unused items such as gloves, socks, hand warmers, personal care items, and food. See the flyer on page 10 for details and various ways to support the drive.

Shake the Lulav & Etrog: There will be a table set up where you can say a quick blessing and celebrate Sukkot. Please wear gloves if you plan to “shake the lulav and etrog.” We will have the blessings ready for you. You can learn how to shake the lulav and etrog by going to the link on YouTube:

Help from the Heart: Peace Week Initiative

As part of the Peace Week Sussex County celebration (see article on left), Seaside’s Community Service and Multi-Faith committees have organized a collection drive.

“Help from the Heart” will aid the most vulnerable in our community – the homeless and those who cannot afford to put food on their tables. Our collection drive will benefit Code Purple Shelters of Sussex County (Love, Inc.) and the Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. (See flyer on page 10 for a list of items being collected.)

For more information, contact Emily Eider at [email protected]. Thank you as always for your generosity.

Are you Zoom savvy? We need your help!

We already have a few people who really know how to juggle page turning of the Siddur while

services are going on, but we could use a few more so the burden is not on one or two

people. If you are familiar with Zoom and have these skills and

are willing, please contact Sara Rosen at

[email protected].

Helping Hands SJC offers support to members who are ill, grieving, homebound, or just need a helping hand. Available support includes sending cards, visiting people at home, preparing and delivering meals, picking up groceries and prescriptions, small repairs around the house, and running errands. New Helping Hand team members are welcome. Contact Ellie Flanzraich at 561-504-7922 for more information.

President’s Message Continued from page 2

Why do I mention names? We all have contributed to the success of Seaside, yet each name reflects the values of the work given. There are many names I have not mentioned, and I thank you as well.

Earlier this year I gave a Drash about the importance the Torah places on names. I asked, “What words will define your name?”

I am acutely aware that I associate the name of Ruth Bader Ginsberg (z”l) with the values of our faith. I will remember her name for the courage she displayed in calmly and intelligently making change for equal inclusion in our laws. May her memory continue to be a blessing.

We now begin to live our post-High Holy Day lives. Remember the commitments made on how we wish to live our lives. Reflect again on the kind of name you are going to leave behind. Be a Ruth. Message from Rabbi Kevin Continued from page 2 greet each other in a Seaside sukkah this year once we are able to meet in our newly expanded building – a larger and more permanent example of the new Seaside Sukkat Shalom.

It is still not too late to wish all of you a Shanah Tova, a 5781 with greater health and happiness and justice for the world. And it is just in time to look for our exciting re-entry into our new sukkat shalom soon!

Hawtof Gift Announced At the Rosh Hashanah service,

Seaside was excited to announce a $30,000 matching gift challenge from Drs. Jeff Hawtof and Nancy Gideon. This means that new gifts made to the building fund now will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $30,000.

“We are committed to Seaside, we’re excited about the expansion, and we want to encourage others to give,” Jeff said. “We hope that matching new gifts dollar for dollar will be the impetus that will bring the Capital Campaign to a successful conclusion.”

Jeff, Nancy, and their three children have been members of Seaside since 1998. Jeff served as president three different times, starting in 2004, taught in the Religious School, and led popular Friday night services with his guitar. Nancy was the Youth Education Committee Chair for eight years.

“Seaside has been so central to our family’s life,” Jeff said. “We have been blessed to be able to raise three children and live in this community.”

The campaign hopes to come as close to $1.25 million as possible. With generous pledges and gifts from members, and with grant funds from Delaware Emergency Management Agency and the Milton and Hattie Kutz Foundation, total funding stands at $1,022,000. While the virus has made this a difficult and frustrating time for many, most of us have been fortunate enough to escape illness and hardship. At a time when all places of worship have been closed, we have been constructing a beautiful new

building. If we can add $30,000 in new contributions, plus another $30,000 in matching funds from the Hawtof family, we will be close to $1.1 million. Costs not covered by donations and grants will become a mortgage.

Here is a unique opportunity to participate in Seaside’s transformation with double the value and impact of your gift. Double the value of your gift now. When we work together, we know we can accomplish amazing things. For more information about the Capital Campaign, please contact Marilyn Feldman at [email protected], or 301-343-2706.

UPDATE ON THE

BUILDING EXPANSION As of Sept. 24, construction is substantially complete. Final electrical, painting, security, technology, irrigation and

landscaping are happening now. Yet to be installed are the elevator and the carpeting.

Visit our home page to make a contribution toward the

Challenge Grant (have your Capital Campaign contribution

doubled by our generous Challenge Grant Donors, the

Gideon-Hawtof family).

On Thursday, Sept. 10, the Social Committee Zoomed in on Anita Smulyan while she did some holiday prepping. With the able assistance of Jimmy Bachand, she shared her step-by-step recipe for rugelach.

The audience of experienced bakers and novices had many questions. Anita, one of SJC’s premier bakers, had the answers. Participants were able to follow the recipe on the chat thanks to Deena Newman, and variations to Anita’s recipe were discussed.

Everyone was satisfied with Anita’s demo, although the limitations of Zoom did not allow us to taste the finished product. Thanks to Anita and Jimmy for their inspiring tutorial to get us baking.

would be helpful if you could be specific. Want a melody, specific piece of music,

poem, or prayer? Not sure? Rabbi Bernstein is leading this charge and wants

to hear from you. Contact him at [email protected].
